@quilteryoyo We hardly ever get actual snow. We mostly get freezing rain with sometimes a dusting of snow. I hope it won't be icy. I don't want to skip runs right before my race, but I also don't want to slip and injure myself.1

I'm back from my girls' weekend away. Feeling very refreshed. We entered an event called 'We Run the Forest", and much like it says, we ran in the forest, except for when the hills were too steep, then we walked! As I'm a week out from my major event of the year, this was a 'fun' event for me. Coach wanted me to keep my heart rate below 151, which was almost impossible with the 300 metres of climbing, but, I managed an average of 155 by walking most of the uphills and running at a very cruisy pace for the rest of it.
Both my friends ran fairly hard - one coming second in our age group in the 12k, the other running the half distance - so I was very fresh compared to them the next day. We took ourselves off to the Blue Lake for a run the next morning. One didn't run at all as the half had aggravated her hamstring, and the other who ran with me was feeling very tired so we took it slowly. After one lap (it's 5.4km around) she was done, so I ran a little more, much faster, but really simply enjoying being in nature and beside the water.
The weather was perfect for running the whole weekend - a pleasant temperature (about 16-18 Celsius), overcast, and completely still. However, I was happy to return home to blazing sunshine and the first feeling of summer. It's been a stunner here today - about 25˚C - so we took the girls off to the beach where they had a most marvellous time playing in the freezing surf!
A few pics from my trip - Rotorua is a thermal wonderland so there's lots of steaming water and boiling mud (and a nasty stink of sulphur in the air!). The event medals were very pretty - each year they change the colour of the leaf, which makes me want to go back and do it again!9 -
Recently I've been doing this change of perspective thinking exercise for when I'm lacking motivation. I imagine that I'm watching the back of my head and controlling my actions like I'm playing a third person shooter game.
This is so funny! My husband got a kick out of it as a gamer. We were imagining what kinds of stories you would make up as the player in the game running around.

I finally got in my “long run” yesterday afternoon. Garmin coach had me do a 10 minute warmup, 30 minutes at 10:11-11:11 pace, and 10 minute cool down. Not bad at all. No runs scheduled again until Wednesday, so I guess I will try to get in a walk and maybe some yoga tonight.
Hubby has decided when he returns from deployment that he wants to complete the entire Couch to 5k. If you’ll recall, he hadn’t really run since getting out of the military 8 years ago but did a few runs with me before he left last time. There is a trail 5k I want to do in January, so I am trying to convince him to do it too, even though he won’t be finished with the program quite yet. I told him he can run/walk it. I figure it could be a big boost for him to do a race and get a medal and such. He really wants to get back in shape.11 -

5 miles this morning. Was cold, rainy, and windy this morning. So opted for the treadmill. Days like this is why I am glad I bought it.

Yesterday, I ran my virtual Marine Corps Marathon. We met at our finish line at 6:00 am, loaded into a van and were shuttled up the mountain to the starting point. It was still dark and sprinkling rain but the temp was around 57F which although humid, was good. Our first aid station was at mile marker 10.7 and I felt pretty good. Refilled my water, grabbed a couple of Pringles, and kept going. The next aid station was at 17.8 miles. Our friends had music going, a bubble machine along with water, Gatorade and snacks. I refilled my water bottle with Tailwind and ate a waffle. I had 2 gus prior to this and although my tummy was feeling ok, I just couldn’t think of eating another one. I changed from my trail shoes to my road shoes here. I had never run over 10-12 miles in the trail shoes so I wasn’t sure about wearing them for the entire 26.2.
As I left that aid station, I was really feeling tired. I got to around mile 20 and hit that proverbial wall. I’ve hit it before but this time was very different. I was light-headed and almost passed out twice. I sat down on a bench along the trail for about 7 or 8 minutes and made myself eat another gu. I mostly walked miles 21-23. I hit the finish area around mile 24.6 so I had to go out another .85 or so miles and turn back. My worst marathon time ever. It wasn’t pretty, but I finished it.
After the run, we hung out and took pictures, had some snacks and visited outside. As soon as I got home, I ran an Epsom salt bath. My quads are feeling pretty sore this morning. I have a massage scheduled for later this morning.
Our crew at the starting line. The one guy ended up finishing first at 4:38. This was his first marathon and the farthest he had run in training was 5 miles...
Coming in at the second aid station.
Cpl Foster who was at the finish line to congratulate us and put medals around our necks
Our homemade medal and the swag provided by our retired Marine.14 -
@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like a really fun weekend! Love the pictures!
@marisap2010 Great run! Hope your husband follows through with the plan. Would be great to be able to run together.
@Scott6255 Glad you were able to use the treadmill this morning. Did your houseguest leave?
@Teresa502 Couldn't decide whether I should "like" or "hug" your post. Glad you were able to finish. Sorry it was such a hard run for you. That guy is amazing to run a marathon when he hadn't run over 5 miles before. I can't even imagine. Can he walk this morning? Love the pictures. The bubble machine was a nice touch. Marines have the best dress uniforms!3 -

I didn't post on Sunday with the forums down, but I did my longest run of the last couple of months. Starting in the cold rain but ending in fairly decent running weather. I'm just glad to get a little bit of mileage in finally.
Yesterday was another big hike. I'll post more later when I'm more recovered but I did my short trail run during the hike again - this time about 14 hours in and just as it was getting dark, wearing hiking boots and spikes. It was not very fun.5 -
@Teresa502 Sounds like a tough race, but you did it! I'm so impressed by the coordination of this virtual run. It's so awesome that your friends rallied and made this a such a neat experience for all of you.
@katharmonic Running during those long hikes, especially in boots and spikes, sounds crazy!!2 -

Monday speed work, with a couple tweaks to get it within my available time window this morning. It was in the upper 60's and the humidity was not too bad. Really pretty nice weather. My training app made another fitness adjustment after my race this weekend, so the pace targets for my speed work are getting faster, but so far I've been able to keep up.
I am currently looking at a couple of potential replacement HMs for early 2021 since the Houston HM went virtual. I really like to train my distance up once a year even though I have no plans to maintain that mileage year-round. Without a race, I just don't have the motivation to put in the mileage I need to get there.
So far I have found a small one not too far from my house on New Years Day (Texas Marathon). It was started to help a friend complete a marathon a week for a year goal when he couldn't find one that week and it has kept going since then. It looks like a fun race. Some people run in costumes and you are handed a themed stuffed animal along with your medal at the end, which is just so quirky and fun. It's interesting because it's a BQ marathon and a HM but it's capped at only 700 people.
The other is the Galveston HM/Marathon in late February. It would make a nice weekend getaway, just a couple of hours from home. The weather in Galveston can be a little dicey in February. It's guaranteed to be a bit windy as you run along the seawall, but if it is cold, it will feel REALLY cold with the wind. I had a friend who did a half IM in April a couple of years ago and got pulled from the course with hypothermia. Might be worth a shot, but I would definitely have to plan for some serious weather contingencies.
Maybe I'll do both...2 -
@skippygirlsmom awesome job on your virtual HM - cools swag, and nice feet!!!
@ContraryMaryMary glad you had a fun outing with the girls. Forest looks amazing.
@Teresa502 running a marathon without the big crowd and support is a tough ask. Glad you had some good friends to support you. Finishing, no matter what time, is a huge accomplishment. Very cool that a retired Marine was able to be there at the finish.
@quilteryoyo Yes, we moved Aunt Betty into the Memory Care facility about 3 weeks ago. Both she and my wife are adjusting, but honestly, Betty has no idea where she is. Everyday she asks if she can go home to her mom and dad (she thinks she is a little kid and is being punished for doing something bad). Really sad.7 -
@Teresa502 Congratulations on your marathon! I'm glad you all were able to make the best of the cancelation. It sounds like it was tough, but you were tougher! I also echo the question of how the guy is feeling who only trained up to 5 miles!
@Scott6255 that's so sad about Aunt Betty. I want to give her a hug.
Today I had hills on the plan, and wanted to get a total of at least 5k. So I went to the woods and did a few hills that are shorter (& I think steeper) than my regular hill. I had to do a lot of repeats to get in the distance, so one hill got repeated enough times that I lost count. My legs started feeling like rubber towards the end, so I was glad it was time to head home. I guess that means it's doing something5 -

Thank you and everyone else for your encouraging words.
I haven't heard from him today but a couple of hours after he finished he was definitely walking funny!

@katharmonic Running after hiking for 14 hours...and in boots and spikes! You are amazing. Hope you got some rest today.
@Scott6255 I'm with @polskagirl01 and want to give Aunt Betty, and your wife, a hug. Dementia is so hard on everyone involved.
Sounds like a tough hill repeat session today @polskagirl01 !2 -
