mainelylisa wrote: »@Lilylady3k I can't begin to tell you how my father's finances unfolded after he died. It took like 4 years to get his will executed. You'd think he was a millionaire, but faaarrrrr from it. Though his alma mater thought he was. Years of unpaid taxes amongst other things. Good thing my stepmother died before that was discovered. Great you're taking care of this while she's here!
It is amazing what you uncover! Her husband paid no bills and had no money and no will. It is her home ... inherited from her father. I cannot believe what had to be done to close his accts and other stuff. I mean the ambulance service wanted his signature ... I called to explain that he died ... how do you want to handle this without his signature???? I cannot believe the number of checking accts and credit cards and how unorganized my mom is. I mean just grabbing a book of checks to write a check ... not knowing which acct or following check number order (3 checkbooks for the same acct + 2 others for 2 other accts). The biggest thing was budget ... trying to figure out if she had enough money to actually pay all her bills and still buy groceries each month. There is no savings account. Opened her a savings account for the first time in 30 years to help save for emergencies. She has not paid taxes in years! But then there is no money. I took on some of the bills. My sister others. My brother still asks her for money ARGHHH. I cannot believe that 1/3 of her social security check goes to medical insurance. And then the rest to car and home insurance. She is living off the extra money I've been giving her each month since 2017. So things are really tight for her. BUT I did figure out how to get her poker game into to the budget. She was happy. And she really enjoyed me cooking dinner every night.10 -
I am trying to cut back on my excessive wine drinking for health reasons. Seems I have too much iron in my blood which could lead to liver/pancreas disease along with other things. I have made a box of wine that I could usually consume in 4 or 5 days last 2 weeks. So, that is a beginning. I think the worst thing for me is the urge to drink as the afternoon grows later and the problem of being able to get to sleep. I have used my wine drinking as a sleeping pill for many years.
Wonderful progress on the box wine!! Congrats. I too use to use wine as my sleeping aid but then realized while I fell asleep I was not nearly restful ... waking up many times during the night. This week my focus was fewer drinks per evening. Looking forward to less stress next week ... and more AF days.6 -
Didn't make it last night. Remembered there was a leftover bottle of red from Thanksgiving that I knew husband wouldn't miss. Drank the whole thing before dinner was even done. Ended up with a migraine a few hours later. Karma I guess.8

So glad that those who are missing their mark a bit are still here and not giving up!
Day 8 AF. Got to the cabin today and really did want a drink. There is wine and beer galore. But shoved it aside and asked myself why. No good answer. DH asked, as I was applying my estrogen therapy stuff to my wrist, "Is that the stuff that makes your pants fall off?" I said, "No, that would be alcohol." I do get a lot more frisky with alcohol, so guess I have to figure out why that is.8 -
LMAO at @mainelylisa's post. A bit of humor and lightheartedness goes a long way.
Still working on my challenge...it's to enjoy life with less alcohol. Most days it's easier to nail the no alcohol than it is to enjoy life and be happy, with no job. I am working on being kind to myself and trying to get my "life balance" right.
I have "holes" in my life I need to fill with happy things that don't contain toxins or calories, if you get my drift .
New puppy still sounding like good solution.......
Hugs for everyone. Major tough year but we're doing it. Today I will limit my screen time, search for the next best BBQ chicken recipe for tonight, and LMAO some more on the next best Netflix show I can find .

New home for the thread, but the same goals for me, 16-20 AF days per month.
Tuesday December 01 - AF - Super long and stressful work day, I really wanted a drink when I finally got home, but over the past months I have been trying to "save up" my drinking days for happy occasions, not to relieve stress. Planning AF for tomorrow also.
Wednesday December 02 - AF - I think that this might be my 4th AF day in a row.
Thursday December 03 - Drinks. Work Stress drinks. I had just finished saying that I was trying not to do that. Instead of my usual 3, I had 2. It took the edge off. The 2 drinks prevented me from quitting this one particular job outright (I am a Merchandiser and work for several companies). I will sleep on it.
Friday December 04 - AF - Had to use resistance and a few 6 minute waits to not have a drink. I walked across the ice today of that bird sanctuary that I have posted a few times. Skating there tomorrow for sure! Photos from my lake walk to come later because I can't help it : - )
Saturday December 05 - Drinks. Skated on a lake today!!! Wondrous!! A friend joined me and then we had cocoa with peppermint schnapps after.
Rolling total: 3AF days out of 5 days5 -
@Lilylady3k
Wow, you are going through so much with your Mom.
I am so glad that you are there for her.3 -
@globalhiker
Puppies are so cute.
None of us can travel anywhere for awhile, but once we can again, what to do with a puppy?
What kind of puppy were you thinking? Golden Retriever?
Maybe you should get a Saint Bernard that you can take up to the mountains with you. You could put a keg of brandy under his/her neck should you get stranded in the snow somewhere.
As for that hole, yeah. A bunch of soul searching to do about that for many of us, the hole that we have filled with snacks and booze : - )
You will figure it out, and then you can teach the rest of us : - )
Meantime, lets all just get outside for at least 10 minutes per day.4 -
Out on the ice. A bit bumpy in spots, but still skate-able
Lots of inlets to skate in and around
Me in my Detroit Red Wings toque very happy and getting ready to go out to skate
No photos of me on the ice, but this is my friend who is not really a skater but loves the out of doors. I gave her a stick to help her to balance. We had a really good time.

Well I'm back home. Helped mom finish all the tasks at the house that included a ladder/step stool (tall Christmas tree outside decorated while it rained, high shelves inside, and putting together things that she couldn't figure out this week. I'm hoping I got all the tasks on her list done! Long drive home and then our dog had a "date" for mating in the evening as well. So no time for exercise or focusing on me. I completely just gave in on carbs, fast food, and "whatever" for dinner. DH & my sister conspired ... she brought over wine and cooked dinner of crawfish étouffée and he ran out and bought wine. So wine we definitely had in the house. 2 glasses.
Need to get some AF days under my belt this month.
Dec accountability: 0/5 days AF
Goal: AF days 3 per week / 12 per month; limit 1-2 glasses per day
No Alcohol: 0 days
Alcohol 5 days (11 drinks)

12/1 Tues 1
12/2 Wed 2
12/3 Thurs 3 drinks
12/4 Fri 3 (2 wine, 1 drink)

@dawnbgethealthy Some of that ice looks rough! Beautiful area though.
Did I mention to ya'll that one morning I gave my mom a cup of coffee and she was like this is too strong ... went and poured Amaretto into it. It was a tough week for her too. Hugging her and hoping this works out ... she has really slowed down and not able to move as smoothly as she use to ... but then she is constantly jumping from one thing to another and doing something.
@globalhiker Standard Poodles make great pets. They are very athletic and can run with you, but also great cuddles when hanging out inside. Oh and they don't dig up the garden!

Good Sunday morning everyone.
@lilylady3 I have NEVER seen a standard poodle that is patched and has a saddle before. How beautiful, I love the colors. Is it male or female?
@dawnbgethealthy your photos as always are gorgeous. I had to look closer, I thought that was open water because it was so clear blue. Excellent way to take in healthy oxygen.
@mainelylisa I saw Greenville did not get that much snow, how about Rockwood? We had a TON of rain right up to the end and then it snowed less than an inch. Thankful for that. And no I wont be traveling anywhere near someplace that gets more snow than where I live. (P.s. tequila makes your clothes fall off)
@CryingBlue don't take it too too hard. A tiny step to the side. Get back to focussing on what you want to do daily. We are here for you. Hugs.
@brittgreenlikethecolor88 your car is giving me anxiety for YOU. What? So they can't fiquire out the problem with it? I had a check engine light that kept coming on, I took it to a repair shop and it cost over $1,100.00 to "fix". A week later it came back on. Took it some place else and they said do not pay attention to it, they give out false readings all the time. UGH UGH UGH I just dished out a ton of $$ to be told that.
There........... I took your stress away.
@Peach1948 sorry to hear about the health related issues with the wine consumption. Using it as a sleeping aid back fires as our bodies find the alcohol wakes us up in the middle of the night. A quick knock out but not worth waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning. Solid sleep is healthier.

Yesterday I battled the grocery store early in the morning to get fresh produce. That was a mistake, how nutty was I to go on a Saturday morning? Anyhow that put a wrench into my early morning workout, then it started blowing REALLY hard and raining and the temps went down quick AND I NEVER GOT IN MY WORKOUT😬😬😬
This is a new day and I am walking up in the cold on the slippery driveway to my sanctuary to work out and be happy. My friend and I joked that with all the ab workouts we are doing this Fall no one will be able to see our progress because there is no where to go and nothing to do.
Another AF day/night under my belt (oh but I did buy hot cocoa and had that in my snowman mug with a scoop of cool whip in it) YUMMY

@dawnbgethealthy & @mainelylisa yes my Sister and I have both confronted our Mom about not wanting her to be around grandchildren because of her drinking. Her response was, "Well look, you two didn't die from me drinking did you?"
Not the response you would expect from a woman that is highly admired by her work colleagues at the Universality she works at. She is what they call a functioning drunk. Can drink all night, blackout and then wake up and pull off a what seems like normal day to everyone around her. Weird thing, she would never say she passed out or blacked out. She would comment she went to sleep or must have had the 24 hour flu.
I had nips the other night with my beers. So I suppose those count for drink to? They were around and I got drawn into the up coming holiday anticipation.

Failed again last night. More wine, weekends are hard. Husband is working alot and I miss him. Him working night has always been difficult for me. He still has several more nights before his week is over and is already talking about working extras because they are short.
@CMB44512 I'm sorry about the difficult situation with your mom. Stories like that are terrifying to me as a mom. I don't want that for my kids. My dad was a drinker, it caused a lot of friction with my parents growing up.
More reasons for me to find my wagon again. So much easier to say in the morning.
3 af days out of 5.

@Lilylady3k that is a very good looking poodle indeed!
@dawnbgethealthy I'd like a hound mix for a dog, midsize. My previous dog looked something like this and I'd like the same.

@Lilylady3k Sometimes I just need to cut myself some slack. I call it my "recovery day/days". Those are the days when my diet goes out the window, take a weekend off from exercise, and I just want to eat really good food, drink, and well, recover from any major stress. It seems like a normal human thing to do. And it's short-lived.
The bright side is that crawfish etouffee...sounds marvelous.....I need to make that!
@CMB44512 what you describe sounds like a normal "denial" response, a defense mechanism. Tough to get someone to change, they have to feel ready or there needs to be a life-event that suddenly makes them want to change. Frustrating, but the good thing is she heard you loud and clear and deep inside she may be thinking about it, just not ready to express it or take action -yet.3 -
@dawnbgethealthy your pix as always, are great! If you put me on that ice, I would require a walker for stability
@MissMay when Covid is over and you're at the beach on some tropical island somewhere, all that ab-work will pay off. Everyone will think you are 15 years younger!
And when the weather is bad, I revert to what I call my "commercial" workout...every time a commercial comes on TV during the news hour, I do an exercise for the commercial duration....jumping jacks, pushups, crunches, just keep mixing it up!
Day 10 AF is here. I need to Just Do It.3 -
@globalhiker It was mostly a week off instead of a day but I'm feeling back on my own path as of today. Though DD called and invited us to dinner ... so no telling what we are eating this evening.
@MissMay He is a brown & white 3yr old "party poodle" or "tuxedo poodle" ... standard size about 65 lbs. Before this one we had a solid cream about 45 lbs. DH is allergic to cats & dogs. He grew up with a toy poodle but I think they are too yappy usually. I wanted a larger dog since I grew up with a Lab. We settled on standard poodle ... and it turns out they are great!4
