New bar in town, just opened this past Monday. They open today at 9:00am. I am going to be there when they unlock their doors for business.
It is a Smoothie & Juice Bar

@Lilylady3k what incredible packaging for that ice cream. I would buy it just because it is fun. And the ingredients do sound scrumptious.
Try to drink lots of water today to flood out the pizza and ice cream from last night. I think our scales are getting together with the wine devils to drive us crazy.
Enjoy your Saturday.
Glad that the ice cream stayed at DD's place and did not wander home with me LOL
Today we are planning a drive to Austin which will include lunch and a hike with DS & his wife. My personal plan is no beer at lunch (Austin has great beer) and AF this evening as well. Water bottles are full and ready to go!
Enjoy your weekend!6 -
@Lilylady3k sounds like you a socially active fun time over there in Texas. Is this retirement living because it seems fun
Can't believe that decadent ice cream has less than 200 calories, so maybe not as dangerous as it looks.
@MissMay thanks for that post about the drink taking a second drink.....I need to enlarge it and post it on my fridge door.
This made me think last night when I popped open one of DH's beers to de-stress (bought no wine yesterday). I stopped at the 3/4 mark and didn't finish the can.
Hovering at 5 days AF/15....6 -
I am in shock at the sizes of the beers they are pouring @Gaertnerin n Germany. Not only that, but what about the price? What if you don't want to pay for an entire pint or even half pint? And those beers I guess are very strong in comparison to our beers here in the U.S.
I think the alcohol content here varies like it does in the U.S. A German pilsner has between 5-5.5% alcohol, whereas a "Bock" has between 6-7%. This is more than a domestic US beer, but I've seen some microbrews in the US which were quite high as well. As for price, in the store a half liter bottle will cost you about 1 Euro ($1.13), at a restaurant, it's between 3-4 Euros. A bottle of beer is often less expensive than a bottle of water! And at restaurants you can ask for a "small" one which is half - it's just not commonly done
There was a nice article in the NY Times yesterday on reducing alcohol. Seems something a lot of people are thinking about these days:

@Sweet_Pandora I, too, am prone to blackouts. As in I have played trivia with girlfriends at a bar, had 3 glasses of wine WITH fattening dinner, and didn't remember who won. While this situation in itself isn't super dangerous, there are other situations with people who don't know me so well and think I'm doing fine. Until I'm slumped somewhere. It's been described to me how I was talking and walking fine, yet I don't even remember the "pre-slur." So others may not know you're in trouble and in fact, may encourage continuing to drink.
I wanted wine last night. I was finishing work at 6, and looked over to see how many damn days are left in this month, I was like *kitten*--we're only half-way through. After an hour it passed, and of course, this morning, so glad I didn't.
Breaking a habit (like building one) starts with little increments, and everyone here is making them!12 -
Pandemic has been part of the problem. We got into the very bad habit of drinking every night.
I didn't give in last night but I did eat a dozen Hershey's kisses. 🥺. Still that's probably fewer calories than if I drank.
Managed to take the dog for a walk this morning. That's something10 -
I have been struggling lately. Not staying AF. I have been plagued with headaches and migraines for the past few months and and have found having a glass of wine or two does wonders for it. I can only take tylenol for pain as I'm severely allergic to other pain meds.
We have evening plans tonight that do not involve drinking. So I'll be AF today or at least till I get home. There has been a bottle of wine open since Thursday, I'll probably finish it late tonight. 2 glasses Thursday, 1 last night, and 2 ish left for late tonight.9 -
Hello all the lovely's here
Did indulge last night both DH and I did. But we have made a pack and if we are to drink it is measured and no more than two nights out of 7. We met that quota last night so will be AF until at least next weekend if not beyond.
@missmay I copied that wonderful quote from F Scott Fitzgerald and am going to print it and put it on my wall next to a picture I associate with 'change your path'. So again thank you
@Trish1c my drinking started way before the pandemic and I have to say it did not increase with the forced stay at home. I have mostly always been an 'at home drinker' just because I am too scared to have a drink then drive home.
@mainelylisa I too have blackouts, and even after only a few drinks there are nights I wonder when I went to bed. Or what did I watch on hulu...this is one of my main reasons to reign this in for me7 -
New month, new year.
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC
I will post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
Keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month, which is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me.
Tuesday Jan 12 - AF - Really wanted to have a couple of drinks, but it would have been for stress relief and I am trying to avoid using it for that.
Wednesday Jan 13 - AF - Big wind/rain storms here. It would have been nice to have a drink after work, but I might slip up the mountain tomorrow for a skate at the arena in between jobs, so I want to be as fresh as possible in case the roads are okay to travel, so staying AF tonight. Planning to have drinks either Thursday or Friday.
Thursday Jan 14 - 2 drinks. I didn't even pour the 3rd one (I usually have 3) because I knew that I would throw up if I did. Either I am becoming less tolerant, or it is that I don't think that I ate all day before having a drink.
Friday Jan 15 - Drinks. That was a no-no, 2 days in a row. Hoping that I got it out of my system.
Rolling total 12AF day out of 15 days6 -
I had a drink(or 2) last night. My intention was not to try to quit absolutely, but enjoy in moderation when appropriate. I've felt really good the last 2 weeks, having my hot tea before bed. After wine last night, my tummy was not so happy this morning and I had a little pain in my head. So now I'm feeling it's not going to be such a struggle to cut back. Well see how it goes when hot tea no is no longer appealing (like summer time)...6

Went to an outdoor beer garden in Austin for lunch today and I drank water!!! Glad I did not drink since we went on a hilly 2 mile hike that crossed at least a dozen rocky streams ... hop & skip would not have been pretty if I had been drinking LOL
Returned home and sipping on coffee and water.
Planned & executed AF Saturday.
Have a wonderful evening.9 -

@globalhiker - Our social small circle which includes adult kids, my sister and my mom ... not ventured much beyond that but then my 3 kids spouses have families & work and they are around them as well so the circle is always bigger than you might imagine.
Enjoying retirement and outdoor restaurants since the weather here is cool bun not cold. Enjoying my kids when I get to see them. There schedules are busy so it is nice when we can meet up and it works out.
Any of the Blue Bell Ice Creams are rich and creamy. I recommend you try them if you ever get a chance. I've not found my love for the keto ice creams yet so it is good that I don't keep any of it in my home LOL Just because that is a very large container!6 -

Our temps have dropped at night now, and been warm in the afternoons which has evened out the ice surfaces so I have skated a few places.
My gear that I carry is skates, knee pads and a hockey stick to prop myself up with:
Only the areas that were shoveled out prior to the melting were smooth enough to skate on. This is one of the lakes. You can see that only the "rink" is smooth enough, but a very beautiful day nonetheless, Friday:
Today the path that had been ploughed around another lake was skatable up one side because the melt smoothed it out.
People were ice fishing
Just a beautiful day today.
This is the road back into town:
And a spot that I found on Thursday while out hiking that I hadn't known about:
Always a happy camper when I can be outdoors. For sure I feel like having drinks afterward, but try not to.

👎👎 Really bummed as that new "Smoothie / Juice Bar" that just opened and I tried yesterday is a huge disappointment.
They have the word nutrition as part of their name...I expected more because of that.
Note:
No fresh, canned or dehydrated fruit or fruit at all to make the fruit smoothies.
No yogurts.
No soy, almond, coconut, rice or oat milk. No regular milk either. (Red flag waving now)
No flax seeds or ground almonds or chia seeds or pumpkin seeds to add as garnish or toppers.
Hmmmmmm, getting an odd feeling about this place🤔
Asked how they make the protien shake creamy if there is no milk or yogurt or ICE CREAM in it?
Answer-> INSTANT NON SUGAR PUDDING MIX and water 🤤 🤢 ☠ 💩
So this place is not really a health/nutritional source for those of us that make our blueberry smoothies with REAL blueberries ( not flavored pudding mix or any other fake flavors).
**It is however healthier than popping through a Dunkin or Starbucks if that is what your used to drinking.
$13.00 down the drain. Live and learn.7 -

@dawnbgethealthy Wow! Such amazing photos! May I ask where there are? Living in Texas it is always a treat for me to see snow and mountains. It looks very beautiful where you live!
@MissMay What a disappointment, I wonder who their target customers are - people who are looking for healthy smoothies are not going to be impressed by the sound of it, and those who are not looking for healthy alternatives are not usually heading to smoothie bars.
4/14 AF
Goal = get 14 AF free days by the end of month5 -
@Amanda_Brit_Expat nice job with your 4 AF days so farl!
The people that are stopping there either have no clue what a true healthy shake is OR they are pretending to be doing something healthy for themselves.
I heard one girl remark, oh well it is closer than driving to Dunkin or Starbucks. Meaning it is only a convenience for them to have someone else make them a beverage.
Sadly I see it as a new business everyone wants to try and support our local folks, but in the long run I do not see it being a hot spot and being around a long time.6 -
@dawnbgethealthy I love you have a gear bag you take with you. Photos as always are beautiful and delightful to see your neck of the woods. Your rocking those AF days.6

This is what I think is such an important point in the post you wrote:

Your body will let you know what it wants. In Summer you can try some cold tea with a little gingerale added for fizz. I really enjoy this on a hot day on the deck.

@mainelylisa glass half full, glass half empty in reference to the mid way thru January. YOU HAVE MADE IT HALF WAY GIRL. Do a back flip!
Good news is we are all here for the next two weeks (fourteen days) to help you get to February 1st.8 -
Good Sunday morning, Peeps,
@MissMay Any chance the juice bar could be a front for drugs, or just really bad business people"? Sounds more like a bizarre bar. Maybe you could investigate--go in there and ask if they use "white powder"
for their pineapple smoothie. Sorry about the disappointment.
@dawnbgethealthy Beautiful photos! I was highly encouraged to use a hockey stick. I'm going to order one and some knee pads for my next skate!
@Lilylady3k I'm very familiar with BB Homemade Vanilla. It was one of my "fat" foods as a kid. Rounded out the Cap'n Crunch and Mac & Cheese (and ME) nicely. Still my very favorite, even though I've switched primarily to plant-based milks.

And Hersey Kisses don't give you a hangover. Win win for you AF and you exercised the dog and yourself.6 -

@CryingBlue there is a chance those headaches are just your body adjusting to not consuming. Only a suggestion, but you may want to try and cut back slowly instead of going for straight AF days. It would not be a fail to only cut back, you have to do what feels best for your over all health. And migrations sound pretty serious.

Lucky YOU to have someone in your home that will join you in your quest to drink less. YAY.4 -
I listened to a Ted Talk on positive psychology last night. I found it entertaining and insightful. After watching this, I viewed my progress in a much more positive light.
I have consumed 3 glasses of wine in the past 52 days. That's approx 51 days * 3 = 153 fewer glasses than I typically was drinking over the same time period one year ago.
That's some DAMN FINE "less" progress. And even if I had caved (there's still time!) and "failed" Dry January with a bottle binge, I would still be approx 49 * 3 = 147 fewer glasses. That's not a Fail.
On a tangential note, reduced drinking is for sure responsible for a 10-pound weight loss--significant for this 5'1" gal who has essentially been trying to fight the fat gene all her life.
Be sure and focus on what you have and are accomplishing overall. It's a happy feeling.9 -
hello to everyone today
Well AF went out the window last night for DH and I, however any leftover this morning went right down the drain and the bottle is gone. So yeah us. Even though I have not been as AF as I hoped I am more AF than I was last month, or the month before that and so on. So despite not being perfect I am proud to say I am better. Onward to another day7 -
@mainelylisa I love seeing the BIG over all numbers with your progress. AND that is "sum" great $$$ savings as well. Something like 30 bottles in savings.
FANTASTIC NEWS. I am glad you are looking at positive verses negative.
And @lmlmrn you as well. Comparing how much better you are as each month passes.
This is for you guys
6 -
@mainelylisa - I forgot you were a Texas gal at one time so of course you are familiar with Blue Bell !
@dawnbgethealthy - Love the photos. I enjoy viewing them and seeing that area of the world. Thanks for sharing.
@MissMay - I like the one ... try new tactics! I need to put that on my fridge.5 -
Hello all, daily drinker here. The weight gain is getting out of hand! At least 5 very full glasses of wine a night will do that to me.😔
I want to START reducing my consumption by having 2 AF days a week. Sounds simple but seems really daunting. I will also try micro sipping; saw that idea in this thread.
Thanks so much for this thread, the posts are very helpful.
Ps. Box wine is deadly for me. I can't see how much is disappearing from the box, so I just keep going!10
