Here's a fun video from a series going round. Others from the same series mostly change the word to make a parody but they said they found the words needed no change.1

Did the 20-40-60 treadmill workout the rode the upright bike for ½ hour. I really couldn’t use that bike for my spinning workouts but that’s OK. I do find that in NC I can do cardio for 1 hr. However, down here I sweat so very much that I can only do ½ hr. The upright bike was more of a cool down than anything else.
Debbie – safe travels to your mom’s
lisa – one way I knew that I never had COVID was that I could smell the litterbox. It was good for something….lol One time when we lived in the Poconos my hands were so dry they were bleeding. I tried everything in the book – and I do mean everything. Nothing worked. Then I remembered that my grandmother used to use pure glycerine on her hands and they never bled. I figured “can’t do any worse than the other things, might as well give that a try”. And it worked! The only thing that did. Talking about the finger cots, what Vince does sometimes is take a rubber glove and cut off the finger. It’s just that we happened to have some gloves in the house. Thanks for the smile

Thanks- I am looking forward to a long weekend with her.
As for the covid virus- Out of the five of us that had it here, my son was the only one who DID loose his sense of smell and taste. No one else noticed it at all. Everyone is different. My dad only had a cough and that was it until the last few days when he was really weak. Son was also the only one who had a fever as far as I know.(not sure about his girlfriend- she was here at our house but I was at mom's ) and his fever was just one night.

Debbie, i'm sorry, i can understand not wanting to start again. My sister, whose marriage was ok, said she felt she got lots from her friendships.1

I am going to be 59 in a few weeks. Done this twice, don't want to go for a third. IF I had the chance to be back with # 1, like I thought might happen, I would consider it but that is no longer an option so will just hang in there and start doing more for myself. More time with my mom, more time doing things that help get me healthy(walking, Zumba if they start classes again), and staying in touch better with my friends. I have only a couple casual friends over here, most of my close friends are in the town my mom lives(my hometown).

Yes, focus on you!
I have no intention of leaving my current husband (with the severe traumatic brain injury) and every intention of staying with him till the end. I love him.
But if he goes before me, which is reasonably likely, I also have no intention of locating a #3.
I envision spending my last remaining decades on my own and I am quite comfortable with that idea. I have a vague notion of finding a quiet seniors complex of some sort in a flatter more cycling-friendly area, renting or buying a cute 2-bedroom, decorating it the way I want, and spending my days walking, hiking, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors ... or curled up on my sofa reading a novel with my cat.

Pip – lovely rug. What is “offer up”? The Craigs List of CA?
M – I don’t know what the name of the underground fire is, that was one of my questions of the day, where is the most continuous underground fire? And the answer was Australia. That’s all I know.
I’ve been reading on Facebook all about how they are supposed to have this really big ice storm in NC. The gym I usually go to isn’t opening until 9 tomorrow. We looked at weather.com and they’re just going to get a small amount of ice. But you know NC – they are freaking out.

Ah no ... I had to look it up and it is on the mainland about 1000 km away. Apparently burning for 6000 years.0 -

I read recently that many people over 50, especially women, if divorced, may be looking to meet someone, but are not looking to cohabitate anew. They are happy to be part of a couple but each in their own home. The women don't want to be roped into cooking and cleaning. My dad and his 2nd wife lived apart for 15 years before getting married, when he was around 60 or 65 and she 15 years younger. In that case, in addition to many break ups coming from her over the years, she wanted her kids to be out of the nest before they lived together; Another over 50 friend got married after a few years of weekends with her guy and then they each kept their own houses for several years after the marriage, until retirement. Then he built a huge wood studio in the yard, so he could have his own place to get away to. In that case he was way more a loner and needed to get away.1 -

My first epiphany was when I talked to my brother on New Year's Eve 2007 and told him, if things didn't change between me and my husband by the time I was 50, I'd leave him. He asked me what I thought would change in the next three years that hadn't changed in the last 27 years, and I didn't have an answer.
New Year's Day 2008, I woke up with my husband, got out of bed, turned and looked at him as he still slept, and realized I'd rather die alone than live with him any longer. Not anger, or even any pain, honestly, just reality. Until I knew that, I wouldn't/couldn't leave. But one of the things I've figured out in the years since is that I also had to believe that a) it was OK to want to be happy, and b) that I was strong enough to be OK without him. Like Machka, I planned my departure. It took me five months to decide where I wanted to go next, what I would be trying to do when I got there, and to sock enough money away to feel like I could bolt. I was also 47 years old and had a heck of a lot more energy than I do right now.
On the other subject, there are exceptions to every rule, but regarding finances, I've noticed two things in all these years of observing people. Marriages with combined finances don't necessarily survive more or better--but married folks who do not combine their finances have some massive, overriding trust issues that can destroy the marriage. That's observation, not judgment.
In both my marriages, one successful and one neglectful, I took charge of the finances, and I like it that way. I also check balances every day or every other day, and I keep my husband up to date on where we are. It works for us. Edit to add: All our accounts are joint, and the only thing we tend to put in one person's name is vehicles, and we swap off which one has to sign all the paperwork.
Regarding budgets: When we first married, combined we had more than $100,000 in unsecured debt. We climbed out of that in less than three years with very strict budgeting and throwing every spare dime of two reasonably high incomes at the money. I led that charge and he happily participated. Since then, we have a "don't go over this" upper number, but it's reasonably generous and not set in stone.
I accomplished nothing yesterday, I was a complete slug all day. We'll see what I can accomplish today. Nearly a week now stuck inside, and the weather is still supposed to be below freezing all day. Anton Chekhov famously said, "People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy."
Yes. Yes, we do. Chekhov was wrong.
Later, y'all,
Love,

I used to do that, and it seemed better. I used quicken which really worked for me.Now quicken is not usable in Europe! Also writing everything down is another thing to do, and it's hard to get through everything in a day.
But it certainly helped to be on top of stuff. i haven't found a good budgeting software that works as well as quicken did for me, but i think it's also a time management issue too.
YES to both ! That's how I've paid off almost $25k in personal debt in 16 months! I have one last personal loan (approx $4k) to go and I will be debt free except for our house (which we are paying extra on every month!) When I get this personal loan paid off I will start to funnel everything to the mortgage! I used GoodBudget for awhile (the free version) which is the old "envelope" system. I now use YNAB (You Need A Budget).2 -
Rant regarding older son's return to his group home ....Today my older, physically disabled son, returned to his group home after residing with my husband and I all but about 3-1/2 weeks since the pandemic started. You might recall that he was at his group home for about 3 weeks in August when he had a choking episode that required a ventilator after an untrained aide mismanaged a meal; and then, when he finally went back in November, he spent only a week when another untrained aide was negligent in his routine an he ended up in the ER with bladder spasms. We brought him home again. Until today. Today we took him back to his home. He's been vaccinated and I've been having a lot of back, hip and knee problems. The timing seemed right. He was there 6 hours. Just 6 hours when we got a phone call that once again ... I can hardly believe I'm typing this .. yet another untrained aide fed him dried out fish. And he choked. Taken by ambulance he is now in the ER and I am waiting for information. My husband was allowed in with him ... covid restrictions allowing only one person ... and we are waiting for a GI to come in and scope the blockage. He is stable at the moment, but delays in the past are what resulted in the need for a ventilator. I am so angry! The very last words I spoke to the residential manager were that she make certain his meals were finely chopped/ground and served with sauces as swallow specialists have recommended. Someone sent me a picture of his dinner. Unbelievable. Dried out fish with burnt edges. No sauce or even catsup. Served with instant mashed potatoes with no butter. I don't know how we can ever have confidence in this group again. I can bring my son home permanently, but don't know when or if we will find another place that is any better. Most importantly, my son is suffering yet again because others don't communicate or understand what they're doing. He deserves so much more than this.
Beth near Buffalo
Oh Beth , I'm so sorry to hear this!! And you're right, he DOES deserve SO much better than that!! I just dont understand why people can't slow down and pay more attention! It's their JOB for heaven's sake!! I'm sure each client/patient has some sort of chart or list of things that they need or CANT HAVE, etc. Slow down and read the stinkin chart!! People today can't concentrate on any one thing for more than 20 seconds. And don't even get me started on how distracted they are by their phones! But I'm like you -- I would be so mad that I could spit -- or worse!! I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this YET AGAIN!! You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Michele ice is the worst. I will take snow or rain over ice anytime. We have had patches of icy sidewalks for a month now. Next week it will warm up enough to melt them. Our main roads are good. They clear them right away here.
Stay home if there is ice on the roads and walks. It is not worth the risk going out. The only reason I do short walks with Drew on these icy walks is I have yaktracks. Even with them I still have to be very careful walking.
Electricity can be a problem in ice storms so have enough water to drink and flush toilets for a few days and if electricity goes out shut off water and drain pipes. Some in Texas are finding the hard way about burst pipes. It creates a flood in your home. A home here where owners out of town their furnace went out the water in the back of their toilet froze and pipes burst. $50,000 dollars in damage.

We don't get really bad snow and ice here and when we do, it lasts only a few days maybe as much as two weeks. I like the change of the seasons and the gradual changes in light and dark. Right now, I'm enjoying the luxury of staying indoors except for dog walking. Eventually I'll be delighted that I can go outside and work in the yard every day.
Some days I realize that I don't mind that it's cold, I just find it challenging to have to put on so much outerwear just to walk the dogs for 15 minutes.

Okay, I am officially over this weather!
For the abc challenge (which I totally have sucked at, I promise I would have done better if this were summer):
H: Hobby Lobby I wondered around several craft stores yesterday for about 2.5 hours of walking there
I: all things ICE...took forever cleaning the ice off my car, like serious work to chip it out. After letting me struggle for ages, DH finally came out and finished the worst parts. Since he is 6'4" he can reach up way better than I can. Then, I took Bumble on an icy walk. As I was walking, I realized my legs were getting all prickly from the cold and realized I forgot to put my leggings on under my jeans after I went shopping. It was freezing out! And it is snowing again this morning, maybe another 1-3 inches. Plus a wintry mix over the weekend. Done, I am just done.
So, I have had some craft stuff in my basement I bought a few years ago, but I have never used because I was nervous to mess up, but after watching some tutorials, I have completed my first wire mesh wreath, and I think it turned out super cute! It was way easier than I thought it would be. I have a feeling I will be making some more for other holidays. Now that this is up, I am just going to go ahead and decorate for Easter, it is early this year and I need to brighten things up with some Spring color and greenery to help me hang on through this terrible winter stuff.
Hope everyone is having a great week!

Yes and no. I use YNAB (You Need a Budget) software. It is web based and tied to our checking account and both credit cards (Kroger and Amazon). Our other accounts are tracked but not tied to the budget so I enter those transactions manually. We categorize every single penny and track all spending. I started doing this when my husband retired and his income was cut more than half. It was life changing for us and helped us to get consumer debt free in two years and completely debt free last year. We never missed his paycheck. What I love about it is that when we use the credit card, the money is automatically categorized and subtracted from the budget category. Then when I pay it off, which I usually do about every two weeks, the only thing it affects is the actual bank balance, not the "available to budget" balance. This way I don't feel like we're living on next month's income. The reason I say no the the "stick to a tight budget" question is that we have some pretty lax categories, so that if we overspend in food or clothing (the two usual culprits), I just move money from another category to cover it. I did stick to the budget quite religiously when we were paying off debt. We budget a month in advance. For example, our March budget was funded and categorized on February 1 using the income we got on the last Wednesday in January (social security) and Feb 1 (pension). We are very strict about that and never, ever move money from one month to the other.
I could talk about this all day. It is the one area of discipline that I feel like we finally got right. If I could be this disciplined with my eating, I would be at goal. We are incredibly blessed to have stumbled upon this system for our finances and that it resonated with us so that we would make it work.3 -
Dee know how you feel. There is a deicing product you can buy at an auto store you can spray on your windows that helps with ice. Unfortunately it is like ice melt up here. It sells out quickly.1

I stayed out of the cookies! Yay! But I did have some popcorn that my mother made. There's always something.

“Do you note down all expenditures ?
Do you stick to a very tight budget?”
My hubs has always handled our finances. He has an excel spreadsheet with every single penny accounted for. When we met in grad school I had $10 in my checking account and student loans. He absorbed everything. He (and I) are extremely economical. We have no debt beyond mortgage. It works for us. Currently he is planning for retirement. The only thing holding him back is medical coverage. We've always had a tight budget. In past years he would give me the budgeted amount for groceries for the week. Any leftover I saved for our trips to Disney! I trust his judgement.
Texas update:
We've been on rolling blackouts since 2am Monday morning thru last evening. Typically 30 min on and off. Seems this morning we may be thru with that. The concern know is water conservation as pressure is severely low do to so many burst pipes across the city and the university (Texas A&M). It truly has been an experience. Having lived in the northeast and being familiar with this weather we didn't panic too much. We've been well stocked with non perishables since COVID so good to go with food. We will survive and put this Texas experience in the rear view mirror!!
Hope all who need it are staying safe and warm!

Pip - it’s nice to her be getting these things completed before you move in, but I bet you’re getting antsy to get in.
Great deal on a beautiful rug.
Debbie - that will be good for you and your Mom to have a weekend together.
Beth - I am so sorry to read your post, how irresponsible of them. Is there an advocacy group or local news station that would help at all? Your son and family are in my prayers.
My Grandparents were married in 1941, he passed in 1997 and she did in 2009. They always had separate bank accounts no joint and they would each pay a portion of the bills. There are numerous entries in Grammie’s diaries of anytime he borrowed money from her and then would be noted as he paid her back. As kids we would get Christmas presents from him and her and then usually a couple from the both of them. That was also noted in her diaries, “Harley bought Tracey a deep wine coloured velour housecoat for Christmas”. “We bought”, “I bought” all very detailed.
I always thought that they were forward thinking for their time.
Lisa - thank you for the smoothie tips.
Several of our staff lost their sense of taste and smell. All of our staff that has it had it between Nov 15 and Dec 20 and some of them still can’t taste properly.
I use the Working Feet and love it.
😂😂 John Travolta.
Barbara - Yes it is my sacroiliac joints that I just got the 1-2 degree mobility in. When I started I had no mobility in my right hip or sacroiliac joints. She told me the first day that it would be 6 weeks and I’m only half way through. I feel a difference in my mobility but the pain is terrible as all of my joints and muscles wake up and start being used properly again. I’ll be glad when I’m pain free, I just need some patience.
Terri - “Spending our kids inheritance”, my parents and grandparents were very fond of telling me that it wasn’t their job to leave an inheritance. My Grandparents did though. My parents really had nothing, they lived paycheque to paycheque all their married lives.
Machka - I hope you do get some good nights sleeps, I think you really need it more than you know.
Barbie - I wish I had been taught about money growing up, but I think when you have no money and are always robbing Peter to pay Paul and not spending properly yourselves it’s hard to teach your children another way.
Annie - did your affirmation here work? Did you eat anymore?
Rebecca - I have the last two This is Us recorded that I need to get caught up on.
I have not been able to get comfortable since last evening, slept fitfully, and have squirmed more than a toddler in church all day trying to get comfortable. I still did my exercises in hopes that would be a health and not a hindrance but I’ve really not noticed a difference. I think I will take a pain reliever tonight.
Rodger has blood work in the morning and then is going to purchase the plumbing parts he needs to replace our sink and faucet.
I hope tomorrow is a better day.
On the plus side the temperature was only -8 on my way home from work.
I took this picture at 1826 this evening, this is facing Southeast.

Yea, looking forward to be able to put furniture in. Not doing that til the floors are done and cleaned. My head is spinning with the thought of where to place the furniture we have. I don’t like plastering the loveseat and chair against the wall. Pictures are hard too. I don’t put them up til the furniture is in.0 -
Pip – lovely rug.
Michele in FL who stomach is growling. Not sure whyPip – lovely rug. What is “offer up”? The Craigs List of CA?
There is a free app called OfferUp. This is how I sold most of my stuff in Washington. Kinda like Craigslist. You can post stuff and elect to ship what you sold and list your fee to ship or tell the potential buyer to meet someplace or they can come pick up. You can search for something and save it to your “like” list and watch to see if the price goes down or see what else that seller has to offer0 -
Our boiler went out at lunchtime today. I'm waiting for a call back from the guy we used for the new thermostat . He said he couldn't do it, but would contact a colleague.
Luckily, the below freezing temperatures are finished, but we still need heating and hot water!
Not looking forward to a cold night if the guy can't get to us!

I have no intention of leaving my husband and plan on being there until the end for one of us. However, I don't know how well I would do living on my own. I don't like being alone and I swear that my Mom's Alzheimer's progressed so quickly because of loneliness. I think that loneliness is one of my biggest fears of growing older.
So depending on my age, I may date again.
Dee - That's a beautiful wreath.
Not much to say, I was in pain most of the evening and no matter what I tried I couldn't get comfortable. At around 8pm I asked Rodger to put my Dr. Ho on my back and it helped. I will do the same this evening, only earlier. If I could I would use it at work.
I am off work tomorrow so that will be nice.
