Hi : - )
I joined this thread November 2018. I was a daily drinker at that point.
I am drinking less chiefly to lose weight.
My goals now are the same as they have been since January 2020, kind of my sweet spot.
16-20 AF days per month
NO drinking 2 days in a row
Keep 2 AF days in between drinks days.
3 is my max or I throw up.
Here goes my diary style:
Friday April 2nd - AF - tomorrow will be too so as to get my 2AF in a row.
Saturday April 3rd - AF - just trying to stay consistent with my goals.
Sunday April 4th - Drinks. April showers bring May flowers and all of that. The trails were just...wet. I worked out indoors, got a bunch of little stuff done around the house, then had a few drinks several hours ago followed by water.
Monday April 5th - AF - easy one to do, busy early workday tomorrow.
Tuesday April 6th - AF - I got hired for 2 jobs today that I had previously interviewed for. I turned down the one, and I start training on the one that I did pick tomorrow, so AF tonight for sure. It will be a fun job at an East Indian restaurant where I will become a server once the lockdown is lifted. I will learn the ropes and take phone calls for take-out and things like that until then. Less than half of the money of the other job prospects that I had a few weeks ago, but I think that it will be great and it will supplement my other jobs well financially. Good thing that it will be an active job because I love Indian food a little too much : - )
Wednesday April 7th - AF - Really really wanted to have a few drinks, but I have a video interview in the morning, a busy day with one of my jobs, and then possibly another training shift at the restaurant in the evening. Planned drinks for tomorrow night.
Thursday April 8th - 2 drinks, didn't even attempt 3. Nice warm feeling, it was a few hours ago. I will be AF for at least 2 now to follow.
Friday April 9th - AF - I find that I always want drinks the day after having drinks. I don't want to do that though.
Saturday April 10 - AF - I have another training shift tomorrow, plus I wanted my 2AF days in a row.
Sunday April 11 - AF -
Monday April 12 - AF - Not sure where my Sunday post went. I was on day 3 of 6 in a row training shifts tonight - I am not having drinks out of my desire to be sharp and absorb what I am learning. Planned drinks for Thursday night or Friday.
Tuesday April 13 - AF - Very long day at a few different jobs. A couple of drinks would have been nice, but I am too busy right now to risk potentially not being at my best.
Wednesday April 14 - AF - Ditto to yesterday, and tomorrow will be the same work schedule.
Thursday April 15th - 2 drinks, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Another very long day working for several different companies plus the restaurant. I only have one 4-5 hour job booked for tomorrow (Foster Grant) and then...a pedicure : - ) Saturday off, where I hope to get started on my potato garden which usually takes me about 3 full 8 hour days to get turned over shovel by shovel and then planted. I think that I might break my own rule for myself and have a couple of drinks tomorrow after my pedicure. I start working alone at the restaurant starting day shift Sunday - Thursday (I will have to do my other jobs before and after), so no drinks Saturday night until Thursday of next week. Wow, 6 AF days in a row, a new record for me.
Friday April 16th - Drinks. I finished work at 12:30 today and have tomorrow off. Beautiful weather here, 21C (googling) 70F. I played in my yard for 3 1/2 hours then went for my wonderful pedicure. I had the bottom of a bottle of Strawberry Margarita in the fridge for about 4 years, I put a fancy glass in the freezer and when I came back from my pedicure poured it and went into the sun. About 1/2 of a drink, delicious. Scheduled cheat day, Ribs, which I only have once per month now, and a couple of more drinks in the offing. It has been a hectic week, and I felt so wonderful today going into my first full day off in 2 weeks tomorrow. I work Sunday morning at the restaurant. Good night to have drinks for me. No regrets. Feeling relaxed and happy.

@dawnbgethealthy You enjoy tonight!! what a wonderful afternoon and evening you are having
Still considering a drink or two tomorrow evening at the hotel.4 -
Oh man, I am way off my drinking plan this week. I’ve had a drink every day since Tuesday, and yesterday had two at lunch! Between the carb cravings (gnocchi Bolognase yesterday) and alcohol cravings, being completely bloated.... I’m PMSing so badly. However, this is the first month where my period is starting to skip around- menopause is starting to kick in! Last time I was this late with my period, I was pregnant with my children! So it feels like it’s finally on its way.... and then nothing. This change of life is difficult to navigate after all this time being completely regular. I don’t like the uncertainty of being caught off guard if my period decides to make an appearance. Meanwhile my discipline is out the window.
Sorry for the TMI!!!! Especially to the gentleman on this thread!8 -
Mother nature has given us a late April's fools yesterday and today. After setting up the yard last weekend for nice weather, screens back on windows, deck furniture out, Summer jeep out of storage.......it is cold and snow flurries outside.
It could have turned into a disaster, I was just plain bummed looking at my daffodils getting covered in snow( plus I had just returned from having my snow tires taken off and all season tires back on the car). Had to redirect my feelings.
Took myself out of my house environment where there was potential to create mimosas and sink into a bit of a depression. Instead I went to my paint room in my garage and created funky art instead. Several hours passed and so did the bad attitude about the weather. Even went out to a pizza/pub later last night and remained AF.
APRIL 16TH-

13 - AF

@Lilylady3k and @lmlmrn enjoy your special events this weekend. Will want to hear all about it when it is over.

@Womona I feel for you with dealing with the change of life. It can be rocky and the unpredictable as to: am I finished, how long does this last? Because everyone is different. No rules, as my gyno told me. I even had my blood tested to see how far along I was in getting through the menopause stage. I am a need to know person. And no solid answered drove me nuts.
Lots of hugs your way today.4 -
WAY TO GO @dawnbgethealthy on tomorrow being your first day at your new job. Gotta tell you I was wicked jealous to hear you in Canada had 70° yesterday and were playing in your gardens. I can't even edge mine yet because the ground is still too soggy.
Enjoy!5 -
Dinner with our two immediate families parents & siblings ... total 14... at Brennan’s in Houston. Lovey dinner and the wine was flowing. Calling it 3 glasses. Server was pouring but stopped him continuing to fill my glass. Water at my side also got refilled.
My crab cakes were delicious. Never had them cooked this way. No coating or frying. Basically served hot lump crabmeat with wonderful seasonings in cylinder stacks with a lemon sauce.

@dethstar77 great motivational list/tips. Glad to have you joining in, we need more males to add to our group.👍5

@MissMay good job choosing painting over mimosas and remaining AF. I also did, for a third night. Full disclosure, I am going to see my primary doc for the first time in almost 2 years next week and I am sure she will order bloodwork. My bloodwork has always been fine but I do worry about the effect of all the pandemic related eating (comfort food) and drinking. It's also been a good time to reset since my husband is away. I have been eating lots of veggies and protein and healthy fats and fewer carbs and it feels good. @Lilylady3k those crab cakes sound delicious. Yum!5
-
@ducky133 your 2 AF days in a row deserves applause! Well done....and if you can do 2, you can go as long as you want.....
@Womona I myself hate when hormones run the show. I hope you find other solutions to help ease some of those symptoms. I am not looking forward to this but I hear it could be a better time in life compared to perimenopause. Let positive thinking lead the way.....
Trying to not overthink drinking plans for time away. I am already online looking for restaurants that serve alcohol and trying to figure out what's on their wine list. I have to quit this. I am contemplating not drinking at all. My husband is game. But my wine devil is awake and pestering me already. Ugh.6 -
@Womona I totally get the hormonal troubles. I started having hot flashes at 47 but did not go into menopause until 55. At 62 they have decreased greatly but I am sure my eating (too many carbs) and drinking made things much worse instead of better. Hang in there. I have started to listen to podcasts by a company called Nutritional Weight and Wellness and I am finding them really interesting. They say to eat often to keep your blood sugar stable and except for a bedtime snack include veggies, protein and healthy fats in each meal. They feel avocados, grass fed butter, olive oil, etc. are all good. Anyhow, just some rambling thoughts.6

Hello again! Sorry for not posting & keeping up...This week has been so hectic in so many mays! Have broke my plan not have alcohol in the week ... 1 glass wine on with my meal on Thursday, but 2 last night! All factored in to cals and I suppose is better than it used to be....baby steps forward!
As it’s the weekend, I can feel that urge to have a drink whilst enjoying the sunshine that has finally showed up! Must resist!5 -
@globalhiker thanks, it's 3 now! I know it's really a choice to be AF. I have been listening to some of Rachel Hart's podcasts and one thing she says is that the commitment to be AF is not so much the commitment to say no, but the commitment to be uncomfortable when you do say no. That resonates with me because when I choose to not drink I tend to feel a bit anxious and need to remind myself that it will pass. Enjoy the sunshine @Janatki, ours seems to have disappeared.8

Saturday April 17th - AF and I will be until Thursday since I am opening the restaurant each day until then (on top of my other jobs) and will be alone for my 4 hour shifts. I need to not feel any after effects of alcohol for that. Today was my first full day off in 2 weeks, so great. Played more in the yard, it was 72 degrees. I am going to try to find an hour each day to start turning my potato garden over one shovelful at a time so that I can get it planted.

The event was great, food fantastic, band wonderful ... everyone had a fun time My daughter had three of these french market setups with buckets and vases overflowing with flowers. At the end of the party I told everyone to make themselves a bouquet to take home with them

We had a minimum for food and alcohol and at the end of the evening we were still $1400 short so the manager took my husband downstairs to pick out bottles of nice wine. Let's just say what is now in my wine rack is expensive but I'm sure we'll be opening them over the next few months.
I need more AF and 1 wine evenings for the rest of the month. No more going into the red!
April accountability: 6/17 days AF
Alcohol: 11 days (24 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.

@ducky133 I agree with you comments. The discomfort for me seems to mostly have "gone away" to the point I have zero discomfort generally now, except for these random situations where out of nowhere my "wine devil" decides to wake up and pester. LOL.I am now in month 3 of my 95% sober plan. So good news is that the discomfort has lessened greatly.
Earlier this year, @MissMay posted an inspiring message about "discomfort" that resonated with me. I thought to myself: heck, in life I have been through lots of extreme discomfort and crazy stresses and I am sure so has everyone else on this thread (think pregnancy and raising babies, juggling long work hours with college and raising children, divorce and parenting solo, moving, losing a job, flight canceled and you're stuck in a foreign country, family illness and death, it goes on and on).
So in the grand scheme of things and compared to all the crazy life events we have to deal with, dealing with temporary, short term bouts of discomfort often lasting only a few minutes is something ALL of us are capable of.....
AF yesterday and same game plan for today.....:)8 -
@Lilylady3k
Wonderful photos! Thank you for posting those. What a wonderful celebration you put together.
$1400 of wine is a lot! But maybe not at the inflated prices of a restaurant, over what you would pay in a wine store.
You won't need to buy wine for a long time : - )3
