Less Alcohol - APRIL 2021 - One Day At A Time

@MissMay good job choosing painting over mimosas and remaining AF. I also did, for a third night. Full disclosure, I am going to see my primary doc for the first time in almost 2 years next week and I am sure she will order bloodwork. My bloodwork has always been fine but I do worry about the effect of all the pandemic related eating (comfort food) and drinking. It's also been a good time to reset since my husband is away. I have been eating lots of veggies and protein and healthy fats and fewer carbs and it feels good. @Lilylady3k those crab cakes sound delicious. Yum!5

@ducky133 your 2 AF days in a row deserves applause! Well done....and if you can do 2, you can go as long as you want.....
@Womona I myself hate when hormones run the show. I hope you find other solutions to help ease some of those symptoms. I am not looking forward to this but I hear it could be a better time in life compared to perimenopause. Let positive thinking lead the way.....
Trying to not overthink drinking plans for time away. I am already online looking for restaurants that serve alcohol and trying to figure out what's on their wine list. I have to quit this. I am contemplating not drinking at all. My husband is game. But my wine devil is awake and pestering me already. Ugh.6 -
@Womona I totally get the hormonal troubles. I started having hot flashes at 47 but did not go into menopause until 55. At 62 they have decreased greatly but I am sure my eating (too many carbs) and drinking made things much worse instead of better. Hang in there. I have started to listen to podcasts by a company called Nutritional Weight and Wellness and I am finding them really interesting. They say to eat often to keep your blood sugar stable and except for a bedtime snack include veggies, protein and healthy fats in each meal. They feel avocados, grass fed butter, olive oil, etc. are all good. Anyhow, just some rambling thoughts.6

Hello again! Sorry for not posting & keeping up...This week has been so hectic in so many mays! Have broke my plan not have alcohol in the week ... 1 glass wine on with my meal on Thursday, but 2 last night! All factored in to cals and I suppose is better than it used to be....baby steps forward!
As it’s the weekend, I can feel that urge to have a drink whilst enjoying the sunshine that has finally showed up! Must resist!5 -
@globalhiker thanks, it's 3 now! I know it's really a choice to be AF. I have been listening to some of Rachel Hart's podcasts and one thing she says is that the commitment to be AF is not so much the commitment to say no, but the commitment to be uncomfortable when you do say no. That resonates with me because when I choose to not drink I tend to feel a bit anxious and need to remind myself that it will pass. Enjoy the sunshine @Janatki, ours seems to have disappeared.8

Hi : - )
I joined this thread November 2018. I was a daily drinker at that point.
I am drinking less chiefly to lose weight.
My goals now are the same as they have been since January 2020, kind of my sweet spot.
16-20 AF days per month
NO drinking 2 days in a row
Keep 2 AF days in between drinks days.
3 is my max or I throw up.
Here goes my diary style:
Wow 6 AF days in a row, a new record for me.
Friday April 16th - Drinks. I finished work at 12:30 today and have tomorrow off. Beautiful weather here, 21C (googling) 70F. I played in my yard for 3 1/2 hours then went for my wonderful pedicure. I had the bottom of a bottle of Strawberry Margarita in the fridge for about 4 years, I put a fancy glass in the freezer and when I came back from my pedicure poured it and went into the sun. About 1/2 of a drink, delicious. Scheduled cheat day, Ribs, which I only have once per month now, and a couple of more drinks in the offing. It has been a hectic week, and I felt so wonderful today going into my first full day off in 2 weeks tomorrow. I work Sunday morning at the restaurant. Good night to have drinks for me. No regrets. Feeling relaxed and happy.
Saturday April 17th - AF and I will be until Thursday since I am opening the restaurant each day until then (on top of my other jobs) and will be alone for my 4 hour shifts. I need to not feel any after effects of alcohol for that. Today was my first full day off in 2 weeks, so great. Played more in the yard, it was 72 degrees. I am going to try to find an hour each day to start turning my potato garden over one shovelful at a time so that I can get it planted.
Rolling total: 12 AF days out of 1 days5 -
The event was great, food fantastic, band wonderful ... everyone had a fun time My daughter had three of these french market setups with buckets and vases overflowing with flowers. At the end of the party I told everyone to make themselves a bouquet to take home with them

We had a minimum for food and alcohol and at the end of the evening we were still $1400 short so the manager took my husband downstairs to pick out bottles of nice wine. Let's just say what is now in my wine rack is expensive but I'm sure we'll be opening them over the next few months.
I need more AF and 1 wine evenings for the rest of the month. No more going into the red!
April accountability: 6/17 days AF
Alcohol: 11 days (24 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.

4/3 - 2 wine
4/4 - AF
4/5 - 2 wine
4/6 - 2 wine

4/10 - 1 beer
4/11 -AF
4/12 - AF
4/13 - 2 wine
4/14 - 3 wine
4/15 - 1 wine
4/16 - 3 wine Rehearsal Dinner
4/17 - 4 wine DD’s 1 year anniversary celebration

@ducky133 I agree with you comments. The discomfort for me seems to mostly have "gone away" to the point I have zero discomfort generally now, except for these random situations where out of nowhere my "wine devil" decides to wake up and pester. LOL.I am now in month 3 of my 95% sober plan. So good news is that the discomfort has lessened greatly.
Earlier this year, @MissMay posted an inspiring message about "discomfort" that resonated with me. I thought to myself: heck, in life I have been through lots of extreme discomfort and crazy stresses and I am sure so has everyone else on this thread (think pregnancy and raising babies, juggling long work hours with college and raising children, divorce and parenting solo, moving, losing a job, flight canceled and you're stuck in a foreign country, family illness and death, it goes on and on).
So in the grand scheme of things and compared to all the crazy life events we have to deal with, dealing with temporary, short term bouts of discomfort often lasting only a few minutes is something ALL of us are capable of.....
AF yesterday and same game plan for today.....:)8 -
@Lilylady3k
Wonderful photos! Thank you for posting those. What a wonderful celebration you put together.
$1400 of wine is a lot! But maybe not at the inflated prices of a restaurant, over what you would pay in a wine store.
You won't need to buy wine for a long time : - )3 -
@Womona
Oh yes, I do remember that irregular time as things began to change away from a regular cycle.
I sure didn't like it.
Big hugs.4 -

Really good ones.
What are your favourites? I became wine intolerant about 14 months ago. I used to manage Fine Dining Restuarants, provide wine tatstings to corporate groups in a Resort setting, create wine lists etc. I was never that big of a wine drinker as far as volume goes. I kind of miss it, but after experimenting 4 times - once with 3 ounces only, I was sick. My favourite of all time is the Pinot Noir from Amity in Oregon. We can't get it where I live now in BC weirdly enough, because we got it all of the way to Toronto. We have some sort of distribution system. We have a big wine region a couple of Valleys over, the Okanagan. The best that you can get from there never gets sold in stores because they don't produce much, called Burrowing Owl. I used to stock it Up in Panorama BC, the chef would bring back cases of it with him for me. I also brought in Mersault, Montrechet and all sorts of very nice wines. I favoured the reds grown in volcanic ash.
I really hope that you took some photos of that food from the weekend!4 -

@dawnbgethealthy - I put away my iPhone during the party and took no pictures ... so no food pics. Maybe the photographer got a few but not expecting any.
The wine we got seems to be mainly reds with some whites all from Europe I believe with the exception of Silver Oak out of California. No two alike
2 glasses of wine last night.6 -

Beautiful pics @Lilylady3k, So happy for you that everything was a success. UGH...that is some costly wine. I would have begged for a food voucher. LOL
This past weekend was AF
Second vaccine on this Thursday, so this whole week and next weekend will be AF as well.6 -
Lovely pictures @Lilylady3k ! Glad it went well too....:)
AF yesterday and same goes for today.....got in my workouts but still haven't gotten to the yoga. Just dragging from spring allergies I suppose.
I wonder if I too have developed wine intolerance @dawnbgethealthy. My past 2 wine drinking events did not go well. I seem to start coughing and clearing my throat shortly after drinking. The next day I have stuffy sinuses and my ears feel congested. My face and eyes get puffy.
They say there's something like 70+ additives that can legally be in wine not to mention pesticides so I no clue what it really is that is affecting me. Bourbon will do the same thing.
Happy Monday....yes it's the perfect day to plan out an amazing week and focus on doing good things for ourselves and for our happiness

@dawnbgethealthy congrats on 6 days, that must feel awesome. @globalhiker i read something about red wine and darker spirits like bourbon causing more side effects than white wine and clear spirits. Can’t remember the source.4

Thank you for the gorgeous flowers photos, @Lilylady3k. Thay are really fun to look at. Your DD did well! I hope her photographer got more flower photos. I think they typically do, if only to share with their florist friends as a professional courtesy to get future referrals. Same with the food -- more as a favor to the caterer than as something the bride wants in her wedding (1st anniversary) album.
We had a fun weekend. I did not stick to my plan Friday, but mysteriously was satisfied with less than planned Sat & Sun, so I guess it averages out but sometimes I wish I could understand what is going on between my ears.6 -
Hello again everyone. I'm doing better. I had to get off the internet for a while and go into emergency self-care mode, but by Friday things were a bit more chipper and I spent this weekend throwing myself into a project. I've got lots of conversations with doctors coming up, so hopefully this won't happen again. I was definitely not meeting my AF goals, but I kept it in the 1-3 drink range, which isn't ideal but is acceptable to me, all things considered. I'm not going to try to keep any kind of tally for the rest of the month. Just going to focus on getting through each day. Thank you all for being such kind and wonderful people. I honestly didn't see most of your messages until today, but it means a lot.
Our master closet has been getting more and more out of control, so I bit the bullet and got more Elfa closet shelving. Husband and I got rid of 8 jumbo trash bags full of stuff, spent a few hours deciding if things sparked joy, and got some Home Edit systems going (I hope he likes his shirts arranged in rainbow order). I now have a floor-to-ceiling wall of shoes, with my favorite heels front and center (there's a light focused on them and everything, it's the best). I also properly organized all my clothing and discovered that less than 1/3 of my wardrobe currently fits me. This has been a 6-year process of "I'm not going to get rid of that because I'm going to lose weight, really!" And now I actually am, and I'll get to go shopping in my ultra-organized closet every time I lose 10 lbs.
You guys have had a lot of exciting things going on in the past week! I don't have time to get all caught up right now, but congrats to those with vacations and weddings and general good decision making!8 -
Glad to see you back @chocolate_owl and even happier that you are doing better. Your closet sounds amazing.

@dethstar77 great motivational list/tips. Glad to have you joining in, we need more males to add to our group.👍
Thank you @MissMay I look forward to continuing to participate. I honestly feel like the quality of my life has improved since I have cut out/reduced my alcohol intake. Relationship mending. But I do struggle still, there are days that I feel like a drink would be good, but have been able to control those urges and use my recent success as motivation. Also being able to focus on a goal (like running) has helped a lot. If anyone wants to reach out please do, one on one or in this group. I will be glad to help motivate in anyway I can. We are all in this together.8 -
Very happy hearing from you, @chocolate_owl. Good job on that closet! Sometimes I wonder if our closets are a proxy for our psyches. It feels good to shed what is no longer useful, even more with emotional baggage or old coping mechanisms than with old stuff. Less clutter allows us see more clearly more quickly.
@dethstar77 Thanks for commenting re: how goal focus can help. You have given me something to think about. How does the thought process unfold for you? E.g. say it's a day when you feel like a drink would be good, How does that come into your awareness and what do you tell yourself, exactly, re: goals that ends up being helpful? Appreciate your insights.5 -
We are back from our 'mini' vacation so to speak. The weather could not have been nicer. We had a couple of firsts (sorta). 1. We dinned in a restaurant for the first time since covid lockdown. I enjoyed a glass of wine while there although the food was not really great and to me the wine did not taste that good. I even had DH taste it and he said it was fine....just my taste buds gone kookoo. 2. We had to make a 'reservation' to use the pool at the hotel...at first I thought this is nuts, but then we had the pool and hot tub to ourselves for an hour. This was really really nice. 3. I did have drinks on Saturday and Sunday. Which is a total of drinking days this month at 3 or a total of 9 drinks--3 wine and 6 spirits. I don't plan to have any more drinks until our trip to OH the first week of May. And I may even skip that since the family we are staying with do not drink.
@chocolate_owl Thank you for checking in and taking care of yourself. You are motivating me. I have all my winter sweaters folded and ready to put away for the season.
It is going to take me a day or so to catch up on the reading here so I will be back later!5 -

@ahoy_m8
It usually happens at random times.. for example this weekend in the evening I was driving and running errands, and it just popped in my mind it would be nice to have a drink, maybe a beer. (I have had a couple of beers this past month when with friends but generally dont even finish them). But then I think do I really need it, I think back and I know I havent kept up with my running this past week so I was like I dont even deserve it as a reward... Thats one way, the other way is I think I have made so much progress why spoil it - empty calories added as well as work towards abstaining spoilt.. especially if I drink alone. I am okay nursing a beer when with a group that is drinking.. especially if its my close group of friends who still support me...7 -

1 glass of wine with dinner. Still lacking AF days but not over indulging.10

This resonates with me sooo much today!
I’m up 5 pounds, menopause is rearing it’s head, and I drank almost every day last week, and half of that was over my one drink limit. Time to reset.
So far today I’m on track. Under my calories and I didn’t drink tonight! Hubby is supporting my not drinking until this weekend. He’s the best!
@chocolate_owl glad you checked in and are doing better. Nice job in the big closet purge! Isn’t that the best feeling?7 -
Doesn't it feel great after you have organized something in your house? To me, feels like a weight off my shoulder. I have one closet in one room containing all the size 2-8 clothes, then I use only 1/8th of our main closet for my current size 10 "fat" clothes. LOL. I have very few because I refuse to buy more large clothes.
Oh and the heel collection too - ones I'll never wear again LOL. Not sure why people tend to hold onto old stuff. Time for a change, time to donate a lot of it and let it go. I am sure I will feel lighter and less cluttered in my head if it do it too. Thanks @chocolate_owl you inspire me to get better organized too!
I'm a firm believer you have to give things away to make space for good things to flow into your life.
AF yesterday, same game plan for today
