Well regardless of where you stand on this issue, I think we'd all probably agree that greed and commercialism in the medical field and pharmaceutical industries hurt everyone. I don't just automatically trust peer reviewed research without looking up the researchers and funding, etc. & it's sad.. isn't there such important research that scientists need to do, but can't simply because it's not profitable enough to be funded?

They go to the hospital, are admitted, test positive for covid with no symptoms of the disease, and die a week later. It always make me laugh when people assume they won't be one of the (*supposed) .4% of those who die from Covid, but they won't get the vaccine because they fear being the one in a million person who reacts to it.

When claims are submitted to insurance companies for adjudication and payment, they are run through extensive data analysis for possible insurance fraud. Both by private insurance companies and by Medicare. Claims with Covid diagnosis on them are not being scrutinized as closely, and are being paid regardless of any issues that may arise in the claims by government mandate.
I cannot speak intelligently about what may be going on in other parts of the world, I only know what I know about what is happening in my country. All I will say, in closing, is if you blindly believe what the talking heads in the government and the media are spoon feeding you, you are going to end up getting what you deserve, whatever that might be.

I am honestly trying to respectfully engage with you to understand the theory you are presenting.
You are providing "proof" that numbers are inflated for Covid deaths, that is only applicable to the US. But the same Covid deaths are occurring world wide and that proof doesn't apply there.
So I should question what the "talking heads in the government" are saying - OK I am questioning it. I am trying to imagine a reason that my country (and others besides the US) are inflating Covid deaths. Anyone who would like to help with that I am all ears.6 -

People here are making some good comments, but I think it's impossible to shift people out of conspiratorial mindsets with facts or logic. These opinions weren't formed using facts and logic and they're incredibly resilient to them.

This is not true. The reason people are tested before admission is to separate Covid infected patients from those not infected. A person with a hip fracture does not get a “primary diagnosis” of Covid infection. That’s laughable. It has nothing to do with billing for the most part.
Now if someone dies of pneumonia and also has Covid, you can bet a Covid diagnosis will be billed for because Covid likely killed the patient! I say this as a medical provider. But, I see you are one of those conspiracy theorists who has no grip on what the facts actually are.16 -

Among other things, the financial compensation differences are not structured in a way that they would generally give incentive for fraud to the people who actual determine the diagnoses and codes.

Yes this is not a simple moral dilemma. There are 25000 ppl in the world dying daily from hunger (10000 children). There are also simply treatable diseases many ppl in third world unnecessarily are dying from. In this context it doesn't sounds as dilemma but cynicism.

If anything, hospitals gave a lot of free care to patients because they were not allowed to bill for Covid testing. Back in November, December, and January when Southern California had our surge, we saw thousands of patients who did not pay a dime for their Covid tests.
Covid caused many problems which allowed it to be a billable diagnosis. The problems were not just respiratory in nature. A lot of elderly people ended up dehydrated with electrolyte abnormalities due to gastrointestinal symptoms from Covid, for example. Providers were not just tacking on a meaningless Covid diagnosis to bill extra. Chances are if the patient had Covid, it was why they were in the hospital to begin with.
Instead of accusing medical providers of fraud, how about appreciating that we were on the front lines saving lives? Conspiracy theorists are so ignorant.14 -

Because that patient would need to be nursed in isolation to prevent spread - extra staff hours, provision of separate facilities, additional precautionary measures, which all have a financial cost.

Yes exactly. Also, chances are the Covid infection made them weak which contributed to their fall, for example. It amazes me how many people show such contempt for medical providers but those same people wouldn’t hesitate to seek care if they were sick or injured.6 -

Not true. Regular old influenza still exists, but the measures in place to prevent Covid transmission also reduced spread of other illnesses like flu and colds.10 -

This was a conspiracy theory I heard early on, based on a video of some official (Chicago?) acknowledging that hospice patients who tested positive for Covid were being counted as a Covid death. In other words, people who were already dying of something else were inflating the death count.
By this reasoning, if a crazed shooter goes into a hospice facility and opens fire on the patients, they will not be charged with homicide because the victims were already dying of something else anyway. Logic, see?
