Happy Monday! (Maybe that's a little bit of an oxymoron.) Love all the stories and pics! As someone who is now starting to watch movies and then realize 10 (20?) minutes in, I've already seen it, I've become fascinated with neuroscience lately. I wish I could blame all my memory issues on alcohol--I know it's contributed--but so have typical American bad habits that are contributing which I've been slowly changing over the years. There is so much we can do naturally to help restore our brains get them healthy again which is super great news. Not necessarily fun stuff (minimize booze, caffeine, dope, any non-nutrient-dense food...all which affect quality REM sleep which is turning out to be more important than anyone knew.) But I'll say it's more fun than prolonged morbidity. I thought I was doing pretty good keeping my weight around 115, BP 96/66, eating mostly plant-based + fish, exercising somewhat regularly, no Rx's other than HRT. But if my mind goes, what good is any of it? So I'm accelerating my efforts because I'm scared as *kitten* of dementia.
Anyway, regarding voices in our head and changing our thinking...I've heard that it's easier to change our physical behavior, which leads to changes in thought, than to just change our thoughts. One way is through breathing. (Maybe this is why my fav slogan ever is Nike's "Just Do It." This one Youtube podcast talks about how we can use our bodies to influence our mind.8 -
We're doing retirement planning and so I've been watching youtube programs trying to educate myself better. One was interesting, they ask: What asset do you value the most? How would you rank your assets in terms of importance?
The planner said everyone replied their 401k retirement plan or their home/real estate. He said you're all wrong. What asset people value the most is themselves, their spouse, their family. All of it is more important than the money.
We are our own most precious assets. This is why we need to take the best of care.8 -
To counteract my previous heavy sciency post, I highly recommend finding a hammock and twirling. It's similar to booze in that it induces giggles, a high, and dizziness--but without a hangover!

@dawnbgethealthy that is hot for the houses that don't have A/C. I've never been to Victoria. If it's too hot, suppose one can drive over to the other end (Ucluelet and Tofino) or jump in the water. It was very cold in July on that side when I went. My car read 111, not bad for here yet, wait till July when it reads 119. Time for Canada to open up the border please3

Yes, please! I so badly wanted to take my family to Montreal for the month of December. Colleges were remote only between Thanksgiving and mid-January, so with everyone home, and with the US election shaping up to be a rough experience, it just seemed like a great time to be in Canada. Unfortunately for us, Canada did not agree.
ETA: low key weekend. Stuck to two glasses wine Fri & Sun and one margarita Saturday. Didn't even desire more than that. I definitely had a bit of the I don't care attitude heading into Sunday evening, and I was extremely hungry before dinner, but in the end it all stayed on track. And that's despite DH opening a bottle once we got home. I wish I had better insight into why sometimes I stay on track and other times I jump the rail. Work in progress.5 -
AF this evening . Counting down! 2 more days left in June.
Met my minimum goal of 12 AF days this month!5 -
Oh my, I lost my post!!
ok readers digest version
At a little after 7pm this evening the temperature outside has dropped down to 104, temperature inside of my house 98.
I have melted and hope to have visions of coming back as an iceberg
My June AF days are less than my goal, so still ok with that. Even though June was a higer drink month I have noticed that I am more aware of having a drink or several, not just me on auto pilot---oh gee 6pm must be the start of my adult beverages8 -
@dawnbgethealthy I am south of you about3 hours from Blaine. I saw 103 today in my car! Please stay hydrated
Just a quick fly by tonight AF, yeah
I am not on Vancouver Island, I am 12 hours East of there, pretty close to the Alberta border. @globalhiker had been asking if Vancouver Island was cooler. It wasn't yesterday. Cooler than here for sure, but it always is in the summer. Still, 91 doesn't seem very cool.
You are in a gorgeous spot, coastal? Everett? You must get weather very similar to Vancouver.2 -
Hi : - )
My goal is 16-20 AF days per month.
Diary Style.
Monday June 21 - Drinks. I had a quarter of the second can of Gin Smash to start, didn't like it as much as the other variety, it was a bit too sweet, couldn't taste the Gin enough. Planned drinks for Friday.
Tuesday June 22 - AF - Felt a bit fuzzy this morning after having a few drinks last night.
Wednesday June 23 - AF - I feel like having a couple of drinks, but am going to resist. An unexpected extra shift at the restaurant tonight, make hay while the sun shines and all of that. Happy to hit my 16AF : - )
Thursday June 24 - 2 drinks. Didn't make it to Friday, but all good.
Friday June 25 - Drinks. Took the 3/4 of a can of the Gin Smash over to my friend's place when we were both finished work and split it with her. So 3/4 / 2 = ??? 3/8ths? Then had 2 drinks when I got home, so 2 3/8ths drinks.
Saturday June 26 - AF - My first full day off since May 14th. I would have done Census, but didn't get a new list, hence an entire day off! I was so behind in everything. I worked my tail off in the yard and made some good progress even though we are having a heatwave.
Sunday June 27 - AF - On Saturday my friend brought me a couple of cans of the Gin Smash flavour that I liked when she was up in Kimberley getting her hair cut (the only place to get it apparently). They are in the fridge. I really felt like having one after work and then what yard work I could manage in the blazing heat. I resisted, they aren't going anywhere. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.
Monday June 28 - AF - Very hot here, 105F for the next few days. Today after work I pretty much retreated straight to the basement instead of having a cool cocktail on the porch. Invited to a friend's for after work cocktails tomorrow.
Rolling Total - 19AF days out of 28 days.3 -

16 Days AF for June.
2 big matches for me tonight Sweden (my adopted country) vs Ukraine and England vs Germany.
However, I won't be using them as an excuse to have a celebratory/consolation drink
I've realised reading a lot of your posts that quitting/cutting down on something can make you quite introspective.
This in turn has made me realise how often I've looked for an "excuse" to have a drink. Food for thought for me.
Enjoy your Tuesday!4 -
Happy Tuesday! I'm so sorry @lmlmrn and those experiencing record heat. I'm surprised you have any resolve left. Sending cool wind (not enough to fuel a fire!) and positive vibes your way.
@Stockholm_Andy my kids are mad about "football." Yesterday was an 11 hour *kitten* show of a workday. I finally got my lunchtime run in at 7pm--trying to find my Zen and they were blowing up our chat the whole way with commentary, lol. But I got this 1 mile out, so finally found it.
@globalhiker Sounds like a smart planner. I've never used a planner, but need one. Would you recommend?
@dawnbgethealthy Twirling was so fun! I'm trying to get my kid mojo back.
I just got sucked into looking at Sharon Stone in a yellow bikini during my wakeup coffee this morning. Might try some of her weight/resistance tactics while chained to a computer. In addition to moving and resistance, she credits thighmaster (lol) and cutting out alcohol for her toned legs. Don't know about you ladies in your 50's & beyond, but at about 55, my legs turned to jelly. I rarely wear shorts (I guess that's the good thing about living in Maine.) Would love to reverse them, but think it might be a lost cause without lots of $$$.

I am in search of a secret for aging hair (why is it getting a crinkly texture???)...if anyone has a tip, please share
Beat your hair into submission with product! Haha! Seriously as we age and our hair gets gray, the texture becomes more coarse. Frequent conditioning helps, as does the Argan oil products listed above. I use A little bit of Bed Head Manipulator once my hair is dry, and it smooths everything down.3 -
Had a wonderful weekend in Newport for a wedding of my husband’s best friend. So beautiful up there, I love the constant sea breeze to cool everything down. Got to tour one of the mansions, went to a spa, and the wedding was really fun.
I drank more than the two drinks/day I planned on. It was more like 3-4 drinks per day, but I did pace myself considering that before every event, the guys and the wives all got together for “pre-gaming”. I ordered as many seltzer’s as I could stomach. By the end of the weekend I was feeling run down, so I’m AF this week.6 -
@mainelylisa amazing picture. I love running by the water.

@Stockholm_Andy - That was exactly the point I thought of this morning! "Looked for an excuse to have a drink". I almost but did not indulge in alcohol last night but stopped. Why ... my normal excuses 1) there is an open bottle of wine in the fridge. 2) DH was at an Astros game and no one was watching so I could sneak a drink of liquor without him knowing 3) Normally if left on my own at night like that in the past I would drink ... but I've not faced that challenge in well over a year because of the pandemic ... I've not been left alone.
BUT I passed my first evening alone in over a year and did not sneak a drink or drink till I blacked out. It was a WINNER of an evening.
Woke up this morning and could still keep the AF on my record.8 -
@mainelylisa - Beautiful pic and looks like a great place for a run. Thanks for the comment about the Sharon Stone article I'll check it out. Just read last night one on Jennifer Aniston and she mentioned that she intermittently fasts skipping breakfast drinking coffee only, pilates now that she hurt her back, and her love of running.
My legs are not in shape at age 60 but then again I can't run yet at this weight ... too hard on my knees. I have a goal to begin running when I get my weight back under 200lbs.
@dawnbgethealthy - I tried the Crude bitters last night with club soda and lime ... NOT the same as it would taste with a little rum and pineapple juice. Oh well. Thinking I need to find some of those non alcoholic beers but I've not found them at the grocery.
Those that like hard Cider ... my sister fell in love with one when we were in Arkansas. Black Apple Cherry Limeade Cider. I stuck to a single regular beer at that lunch last week.
@Womona - Newport! Fun to get with old friends and celebrate ... creating many new memories. Thanks for the Bead Head tip. I have a good friend that uses it. I'm using Moroccanoil Treatment Oil regularly after washing my hair and sometimes a little when it is dry. My kids are amazed. I had really frizzy hair when I use to dye my hair. Now that I'm retired I gave up dying my hair and let it go silver ... sort of platinum blond and it is straighter and smoother than it ever was in my lifetime. The dying of my hair was making the gray drier and kinkier.3 -
Note to self: Introspection is necessary. If something is not working, STOP, THINK, and CHANGE it asap. No complaining, just do it. End of story.
Heat? Makes me want to drink. Best thing is to distract and go watch a movie or plan travels. I can talk about travel day and night.
Hair? I ditched shampoo and tried regular all-natural olive and argan oil body soap (yes) and then just used coconut oil. WAY better. Appreciated your tips!!!
What else are we talking about? Legs? Yikes I hate mine but hey, they work and my goal is to make them last and not need knee or hip replacements. Cycling hard and hiking give me much better results than running. Add in Endermologie (I get awesome results but it's time and money) and some days at the ocean (tanning) and the ocean water does tighten my skin nicely. I swear Bromelain if taken at night on empty stomach (contraindicated with blood thinners) gives me really improved skin.
BMI? Ugh, Thanks to intermittent fasting mine went UP to 27 this month. Just read it can do the opposite to women in my age bracket because it LOWERS estrogen and mine feels it's at zero. Low estrogen is supposed to be fat storing? News to me. Well, I tried it and got those results! So I am going to go enjoy a nice breakfast of eggs now. No more fasting, swear it made my hair and skin age ten years in 4 weeks.
AF yesterday and same deal for today. I'll obsess about anti-aging (and travel) instead.

@mainelylisa yes, that was an incredible sunset last night. I pulled over the car at a boat launch and just kept shaking my head in disbelief that my eyes were a witness to such an amazing sky. I hate seeing it on social media the next day knowing I missed out on it. Hahaha not this time!
Too fricken hot in our home yesterday so "I"....repeat "I" installed the air conditioner. It took many hours to go from over 85° down to 65°.
Now I am at work sweating my &%$#off and the dog is at home with a sweater on. Lol
AF lastnight, going for that golden 23 for this month.7 -
