Anyone else have the "I might as well wait until...." mindset? It's hard to get out of! Any ideas to combat this??!
I might as well wait until....
- after I go on vacation because I know I won't want to/be able to track as closely during that time
- after the big cookout I've been invited to this weekend because I know people will have salads/desserts sitting out and I won't be able to resist them so why bother until after that?
- after I go out to eat for my anniversary dinner because who wants to worry about calories for that?
- after I go on a girls night with friends in a couple of days because... wine!
- after the retirement party I've been invited to because.. cake!
- after our church potluck because so many choices and since I don't know the recipes, it's impossible to really count and track!
- after..... you fill in the blank .... the list can go on forever ...
I also get the mindset like ... "you know why CAN'T I have a piece of cake, a bowl of ice cream, a glass of wine ... I see other thin people eat this stuff and drink all the time and they don't have a weight problem?!!" But obviously I can't, so I can't (unless I log it of course! I don't believe in total deprivation).
Thanks for the support! I need to check in here daily! These forums are a God send!

R in Indiana, I'd like to recommend "Better Than Before" by Gretchen Rubin as a good read for you either as a book or an audio book (I got both from my public library). It has amazing ideas about creating good habits including a section that addresses "I might as well wait". She has a different name for it. I found out about Gretchen Rubin from a woman on this thread.

Barbara - I am thinking about the bear issue that you’ve had in the past. I have cousins who live near Red Bluff, CA and hunt bears. They enjoy bear meat. I wonder whether Oregon has hunting tags for bears. I am a dunce in posting photos and would welcome help figuring it out. I know how to take the photos, but not how to upload them.

Wow...such a busy board. Lazy three day weekend....well, we got lots of work done around the house but no big gatherings. Angel voice won out yesterday...I was hangry and we found a place open when we went on a little day drive. The menu was filled with lots of crazy good sounding dishes....specialty was the big bad burger. I went with a turkey wrap and fruit as a side and it was DELICIOUS! So happy I made good choice this time! I walked twice this weekend which is a big deal for me. I have knee and hip issues that make it difficult but it was a start. Paid for it yesterday!
Welcome to new folks...I'm pretty new too and will get the hang of this eventually!

Hello all, did just OK over the holiday weekend. Didn't do too bad eating, but I didn't track very well. Went for a girls night for the first time in a couple years it feels like. We went to a fancy pants restaurant and then went to see Mama Mia at our local theatre. So much fun! Moved the oldest back into college with the sketchy roommate. She starts her summer class today. And then had friends over for the 4th, also something we haven't done in forever due to the pandemic. Had a nice walk on the 4th to make up for the cheesecake my friend brought by that evening. Yesterday was my first full week after deciding to try to lose the last 10 to get to a healthy weight vs. overweight weight. I am down 1 pound. Which I'll take! This week I'm not sure about - heading for a camping trip to my (deceased in 2019) mom's hometown where we will visit with relatives. Planning a beach volleyball tournament one day, will go out on the lake (Lake Huron) for some tubing or skiing probably. Will try to eat reasonably but it's camping food... Will try to get in some kind of physical activity every day and track food. Tonight is Kuk Sool class, and I may try to fit in a walk after lunch. Have a great week everyone!

Penny, your place looks idyllic, and I'm happy you have the scent of flowers about you! I know you miss your old place, but but its easier to look forward than backward. 💖👍
Hugs!

Michele--Sorry to hear they are treating you so bad, I don't understand why they would favor someone who does the least to get by, over someone willing to work and has good customer service. If your job is over they need to tell you that straight out and stop messing around or find something else for you to do.
Tracey--That is pretty nasty treating you that way after you put in so much work to get that system working right.
Going to be hot here today, with storms later this evening. I cleaned up fireworks out of the yard last night after work. I was not happy to have pop-bottle rockets on my front porch under the rocking chairs, I am just grateful for no fires. Been feeling really funky, not sure if just over tired, but have tomorrow off,so plan after DH goes to work is to go back to bed. Will clean house when I get up. Then I work the 3 days after 12 hours each day.

I went out for lunch and instead of my usual burger and fries I had a grilled chicken salad. It was really good!
I'm going out tomorrow as well, so we shall see what that brings. I'm feeling popular!

Regarding our Drip Water System-- I was not successful at showing a photo. :grumble:
Barbara-- The best photo I could find won't upload for me. A water timer turns off and on the water flow according to how we set it. Currently it runs twice a day. A durable plastic box holds the fish fertilizer. Water from the hose system dilutes the fish fertilizer and from there it flows through small plastic tubes to all of the plants we want to water. I’m sorry that I don’t have a photo of the box that holds the fish fertilizer. The box fills with water from an outdoor faucet and the fertilizer in the plastic box mixes with house water. We have a system of small water tubes & drippers to water individual potted plants. We also have an ooze hose for broader areas. It watered the beans that the deer ate last summer. (No beans this year and so far, no deer.)

DH went to the cricket, but came home early afternoon because of rain. Once he got home they started playing, so he watched it online. His team slaughtered the opposition! He will go in tomorrow to watch them finish it off, but it shouldn't take long.
Tomorrow night is England/Denmark in the semi finals of the Euros.
I have had a good day attending to inspiring videos and reading. I bought one book second hand and have another arriving next week. Kind of makes a virtuous circle with me giving my books to the Amnesty bookstore. I still managed my exercises, 950 calories burned, and did an hour's editing of my memoir, so a very good day.
Tomorrow I will need to go out to replenish vegetables and milk, but the weather kept me indoors today.
DH watching Italy v Spain tonight. I have things to watch and can read as well. A quiet life, but enormously satisfying. I'm pleased with my improved reaction to DH being away . Once upon a time I would have binged, but not now.
Last night my DSIL rang to arrange her visit. She has mobility problems while waiting for an operation, so I will put them in the room next to us, rather than on the top floor. She has a 'knee scooter' for short expeditions and we can take it on the bus for a meal out, or get a taxi. I feel so sad for her, she is such an active person and has to have an ankle replacement.
My friend in the hospital has rallied a bit with the help of steroids. Both his children are down there with his wife. He is still on lots of oxygen.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
PS - DH's brother lives in Australia and is currently visiting an old friend, Terry Martin, who is a famous wood turner. I have just Googled him. WOW! Amazing stuff!
Tracey -your husband might be interested......4 -
I am meeting a dear friend for lunch—my treat. She has let me ride her horse, Arrow, for several years. I will enjoy her company today. ❤️4

Trying to catch up on all the posts(AGAIN).
Very glad the 4th is over- the idiots letting off fireworks and I mean HUGE ones right over the trees that hang over out back and side fences from the neighbors until sometime after 1AM. We have juniper and eucalyptus and all the fireworks that crackled sounded just like the trees burning(high oil content in both). All the cats were scared of the loud noises that shook the house. It was different this year. We didn't have the dog who was totally terrified of them to worry about(died in January)or our deaf kitty who loved to watch the fireworks(died in Feb)
I have been doing good on tracking my food- keeping it around 1100 a day(try not to go over just in case I am off on my calculations a bit-hard to track some things, like the biscuits and gravy husband brought home for me- nice that he actually ordered something for me, usually I just get his left overs and it is my favorite breakfast food along with hash browns which he brought and I had them yesterday- I had 1/4th the order and gave him the rest this morning).
worked in the garden a bit- finished drying another batch of catnip- will be making cat toys this afternoon. More catnip to pick in a day or so. My cats are going CRAZY with the smell of it in the house.
Starting Zumba again tomorrow after well over a year of not going- will be interesting
Reading the posts I have been reminded that IF I want things to change with dh, I need to start putting in some effort too. After so many years of trying with no results, I have just pretty much given up but it won't get better if I allow it to stay the way it is. I also need to finally start putting myself a little higher up on my priority list and not last, like I have done for so many years.
Thanks for the reminder ladies!!!
Welcome to all the new ladies- it moves really fast but so much support and great to hear from ladies all around the world.
Prayers for those who need it- They do work.
Now to read the rest of the posts then get some sewing done- Keeping busy is the best thing to keep me from snacking(and keeping my nails polished- constant touch ups make me not able to touch food)
Have a wonderful day.

I have an idea you might try. Switch to this mindset: "I might as well get started right away because there will always be vacations and cookouts and anniversaries and nights out with friends and retirement parties and church potlucks. If I do the best I can whenever I can, and realize that giving in to the occasional temptation isn't the end of the world, eventually I'll get where I want to be."
Best of luck to you, R in Indiana
Machka — Most of Norway's roads offer spectacular scenery but they're darned narrow - squeezed in between a mountainside and a fjord. They also tend to be hilly and full of curves, which makes for enjoyable driving, and perhaps enjoyable cycling too. Some of the county roads in the far north have little motorized traffic and would be great. Watch out for the tunnels, though. Norwegian roads often escape their mountainside/fjord straitjacket by going through the mountain or diving under the fjord. Dark, dank, cold, and NOT fun for cyclists.

Barbara thanks for the thread so many wonderful posts.
R in Indiana try it the other way. I need to start eating healthy so I can be in a good place to make better choice on vacation, birthday, holiday what ever. I know for me it has gotten easier now that my gallbladder is acting up. While it has always been a matter of health now that I'm being reminded regular of the stakes.
Flea - I hope your doctor's are right and I'm glad the bat didn't take you out.
Rebecca - yum
Penny what beautiful scenery
Machka - I have bees too and love them
To the gardeners. I usually plant quite a bit but only have two cherry tomato's, a cucumber, pepper in right now. I want to find the energy to clean up a bed and get a zucchini in. The grapefruit tree still has some though and can't wait til the end of summer as the persimmons will be ripe then. I think I might try papaya. Anyone grow those and have to deal with sexing? What happen after the first year?
Pip how do you get so much exercise in? I take it you don't have any weight left to lose?
Michele there are so many employers out there desperate for good help. I'd look around you can find something better and not have to put up with their passive aggressive crap.
Carol I once cut my cornea with an azalea bush which bothered me for years. and am now very twitchy about anything with eyes. So your experience is making me feel for you and have flash backs. Hope it all settles down soon.
Rv Rita the UFO convention looked fun!
I've been having gallbladder issues and insulin sensitivity which has zapped all my energy for a month or 2. They want to remove it but I'm not ready for that yet. I've just started a focused diet, supplement, exercise approach in the last week or so and am happy to report I have more energy which has allowed me to exercise almost everyday. Mild walking but way better than before.
I just got my misfits box and need to figure out where in the fridge all this produce will fit and get dinner started.
So far I woke up in ketosis, stayed on IF. Now if I can finish dinner before my eating window finishes it will be a good day.
I'm on a short break from work so I'm trying to get everything set before I have to go back. Make sure to build healthy habits. Have some recipes fall backs, prep meals and such.

Lmao!!!! We r retired for one. Due to the heat, we start walking yogi early, anywhere from 5-6:30am. I honestly don’t need to be on MFP anymore, have been on the maintaining mode for awhile. As everyone knows it doesn’t take much to gain weight again. I have a 60 mile hilly ride coming up in September in Washington and a 1/2 marathon coming up in September. I have to start getting my legs used to running long distances again, SO THAT in itself will burn cal, along with all the other stuff we do. I still feel like the fat me even though I know to other people I’m skinny.7 -
I met a good friend for lunch today and had a wonderful visit. We had great Thai food and a lots to talk about. 😎3

Hi! I'm not sure if this is the right way to start this since it is in the middle of the day but I figured I'd jump in and introduce myself. My name is Erin and I live in Northern California. I have always been fairly active but over the last year and half I fell off a bit so I am getting back to it now. I have about 10 Covid pounds to lose and from there I'd like to keep going with another 10-15. This puts me smack in the middle of my healthy range. I started logging and exercising again in earnest on 7/1. My plan is no candy (not too hard but I had developed an afternoon snack habit), no alcohol for the first 30 days (kickstart! - but let me tell you July Fourth weekend was a challenge), log all food and only eat back exercise calories over 500. I am signed up for a marathon in December so I will be ramping up my running each week and hopefully the pounds will come off to make it easier! I look forward to getting to know everyone.7

Hi everyone, I’m a little late to the party, but this is obviously where the cool girls are. I’m 55 and live in Maryland outside Washington DC. It’s July, hot and humid, like every other July. Except, everything this summer is better than anything last summer. I started the day by sleeping in and taking two Peloton spin classes. I am a Speech Language Pathologist and work for the school system, so I thankfully have the summer off. I spent the afternoon at the pool with my 23 year old daughter who just finished her first year teaching, so she has the summer off too! My mom joined us and we started planning my parents 60th wedding anniversary party scheduled for September 3rd. Pretty great day. While I do not have a lot of weight to lose, I now find myself with high blood pressure, (genetics + stress + menopause) so I am using MFP to keep track of sodium, especially since the Doc isn’t impressed with my response to the meds. Wouldn’t be so bad if I lost those 3 stubborn pounds either.

Did a body pump DVD today and then took a walk. The plan for tomorrow is to do Leslie Sansone’s 5 Day Fit Walk DVD
I was saying to Vince last night about how I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulder now that I decided to quit Food Lion and he just said “that goes to show you how unhappy you were”
kizanne – welcome! I’m glad you found something that works for your weight loss. Keep it up and come back often to let us know how it’s going
barbie – I was truly hoping that Food Lion would see what a good employee I was and have me go somewhere else in the store (stocking shelves for example). But that was not to be. I would have thought that the store would want as much product on the shelves before the weekend and then maybe right before the week’s sale started. There is another guy who they have as a Customer Lead who basically puts the groceries in a customer’s cart. I remember one time he put them in the motorized cart someone was using and I asked the customer if he’d like help out to his car. He told me “you’re the first person who ever asked me that” Yet, they keep him. I guess it’s not so much what you know as who you know. Plus, it appears he’s willing to work 8 hours/day. Every time I’ve asked him “what’s the matter” the answer was always “I’m just tired”. Maybe there’s something else going on because no one is tired all the time.
Penny – when we moved from NJ to PA, it took me a long time to stop missing NJ. I don’t remember how many times I took the kids to “Land of Make Believe”, mainly because it was in NJ. Now I really have no desire to go back. It just took a long time. You’ll get there, too. Maybe not as long
Carol GA – this morning I went to Burger King. They say they are open from 7 to like 9 for indoor seating, yet the door was locked. One of the things is that I really only can (want) to work from 7 to 11 or so. So I think I’ll need to look at someplace like McDonalds. Thank goodness that fast food turns me off! Update: Maybe this was a blessing in disguise. The door to our condo is rotting out and we need to replace the door and screen door. We just got the quote for the door (no screen door) and having it installed is going to be $1750. If we paint it ourselves, we can save $400 so we will. We figure that with the screen door installed, we're probably looking at about $2500. Now I'll have time to go down there and take as long as it's needed to paint
Vicki – why would they prefer the person who does the least to get by? For one thing, I think it’s not what you know but who you know and the other thing is that they’d prefer people who want to work 8 hours and not two who want to work 4 hours each. Makes scheduling easier. Plus...if someone is scheduled for 8 hours and they are asked to leave after 6, it isn’t as hurtful (right word?) as someone who only wants to work 4 and is sent home an hour early.
Debbie – doing a craft helps me not to eat because I know that if the craft gets dirty I know who’ll have to clean it
kiz FL – when I was young (probably around 9 or 10) I had an operation on my eye to resolve a lazy eye. To this day I have a scar on my eye and I’m very concerned about anything having to do with the eye. I just hope I never need cataract surgery, because I will be an absolute mess. I totally understand where you are coming from
To be honest, I probably really don’t need to be on MFP either. However, I will continue because I like this thread so very much and the ladies here are so helpful. I really don’t care to deal with all the juvenile c**p
Took my evening walk. Pretty warm so now I know that I really need to bring a full bottle of water with me. I took maybe a half bottle today and really could have had more.
Erin – congrats, and best of luck to you on your marathon. Let us know more about it.
Snacker – welcome. You’re so right, this IS the place where the cool gals are.
Going to go out by the pool now and play mahjongg online. My new routine, at least for now
