@7lenny7 When I saw you pop in here, I wondered about Kody too. He was such a big part of your runs in years past. Sorry to hear the inevitable march of time is catching up to him, but at least he can still enjoy some activity with you when it cools down. We always had labs growing up and they were amazing dogs!
@rheddmobile I have noticed the same weird weather thing on my strava. wildly optimistic is a good description. It’s usually a few degrees cooler and several degrees off on the heat index.
@quilteryoyo I love the name of the Tweetsie Trail! My parents have a portion of a rails to trail near their house that has been started. Ultimately it will cover 129 miles. Some sections in a local town have been cleaned up and paved with asphalt. There is a perfect 10k area not far from my parents. A lot of it has only had the rails removed and a rough bush hog but it is hikeable. I think it would be cool to hike the whole thing eventually. It runs within a half a mile of my parents, so I could pop in for a place to stay one night!5 -
Good job getting your HM in for the month @katharmonic
Glad you hopped back on the wagon @RunsOnEspresso!quilteryoyo wrote: »Nice running @Scott6255 ! Only 11 miles! Now I know how mom feels when I tell her I only ran 5 miles and she looks at me like I'm a crazy person and says, "ONLY?"

Aug Total: 33.8/60 miles
8/4: 3 miles
8/7: 3.1 miles
8/8: 5.1 miles
8/11: 3.1 miles
8/12: 3.1 miles
8/14: 6.7 miles
8/17: 3.6 miles
8/18: 3.1 miles
8/21: 3 miles
In the hill country this weekend, so I explored another road near my house for my 3 mile run. Several hills but none as crazy as that first one. I was able to run a bit more but still walked some of the steepest uphills when it felt like my heart rate was getting too high. I spent some time looking at the run analysis on strava and noted a grade adjusted pace for the first time. I usually have close to a 0 grade, so I’ve never even noticed this piece of info before. Overall, my pace was almost 12 min/mile but the race adjusted pace was 11:10, so actually pretty close to what I have been targeting for my train slow to race fast goal. And, I found my neighbor on strava. I met her when she ran by the house a couple of weekends back. On my run, I now hold the 3rd fastest time overall for a segment which is laughable given how slow I am out there. There aren’t a ton of runners in the area. Anyway, she holds all the top times and the local legends. She’s running those hills in the mid to low 9 min range. Impressive and I hope to get there at some point.7 -
Curious to hear what element's will draw you out for your next run @7lenny7 😁
Very interesting speedwork strategy @penguinmama87
Way to "only" get 11 miles in @Scott6255 🤪
Congrats on keeping that HM streak going @katharmonic
Nice cycling @Teresa502
Way to get that run in and congrats on getting 89 in so far during all this heat @RunsOnEspresso
The AF HM reasoning is perfect @quilteryoyo I hope you find a course befitting it!
Sounds like the right call to me @shanaber I'm sure an upcoming outing this week will be better than expected because, well, that's just how these things go all too often!
@Tramboman You know you better than I, but to me that problem with the swing by the 12th hole sounds a lot like a classic case of not doing enough fishing.6 -
8/15 - 1 mile
8/19 - 1 mile
8/22 - 1 mile
August total: 3 miles
At this rate I might actually hit 7 miles this month! 🤯6 -
Way to conquer those hills and set the local records @martaindale
As for Strava and the grade adjusted pace, I personally never got much more out of it other than seeing a better number than what I had. It usually was still a ways off from my flat course paces. To be fair though, most of the times in the past when I was hill training and paying more attention to it, I was pushing myself pretty hard (ie overdoing it again). So it could be that my performance was the factor and not the measurement.5 -

I ran on trails this morning at a nearby state park. I ran two loops of a 5-mile loop. I felt I needed to run the second loop after clearing all the spider webs out on the first go around….@shanaber – Sorry your hamstring was acting up. Glad you listened to it although 6 miles is nothing too shabby!
@quilteryoyo – I think we can add that to our list of you know when you are a runner. You say things like I only ran _____ miles!
@katharmonic – Great job keeping that half marathon streak going!
@martaindale – glad you found a less hilly route. I’m going to have to see if Strava has that grade adjusted feature for my run this morning.
@WhatMeRunning – I like your golfing advice!
6 -
@Tramboman Sorry about your golf game going south, but glad you enjoyed it anyway. We don't have beechnuts around here...do have tent caterpillars though.
@martaindale That does sound like a great hike to plan for, esp. with a free overnight stay. Nice job on the running. It's great that you met your neighbor and found her on strava. You keep up the good work and you'll be at her times in no time.
Thanks @WhatMeRunning . I think anyplace new, and hopefully pretty, will be befitting for the HM.
@Teresa502 That looks like a pretty place to run. I love that you did the second loop since you had already cleared the spider webs. Running into webs you don't see is the worst because you don't know where the spider might be. I agree with your addition to the list.

Do you mean fishing for trout with my fly rod or fishing for balls with my ball retriever? I got to do the latter yesterday and the former last Wednesday.3 -

I can't remember who suggested it, but I asked about incorporating speedwork in either last month's thread or the month before and it was one of the suggestions I got. I didn't need to find a separate plan or buy a HRM, so it seems as good a place to start as any! (I subscribe very much to a "KISS" philosophy ).
And yes, @quilteryoyo, I did enjoy it very much!6 -
Back from a family break away and ran 20 miles today along a coastal path. Good ultra marathon training with 1,826 feet of elevation. At this rate, I may make my monthly running goal.
August cumulative:
72/100 miles
6,056/10,000 feet of elevation7 -
Set out for 16 miles today but at 4 miles I turned around and walked home for a total of 5.6 miles. I had some pain on the outside of my left hip (IT band?) that kept getting worse as I ran and started to affect my gait. I stretched before I turned for home and it helped a bit. I iced it a bit when I got home. I am trying to move around as if I sit too long it acts up. I'll do some more stretches and ice tonight and see how it feels tomorrow morning.
95/192 (I think my new adjusted goal will be 140?)7 -
@penguinmama87 Glad you enjoyed the speed work. I usually do too. It breaks up the monotony of just running at a "constant" pace.
Nice running @sweetdaisy13 .
@RunsOnEspresso I hope your leg feels better in the morning!3 -

71/75 miles completed for August
Today Hal's plan was a long run of 5 miles in 52 minutes at a 10:24 pace. It was hot when I got up this morning. I didn't get out as early as I wanted, but honestly I don't really think it would have made a lot of difference. It started out at 79°F feels like 81° and ended up 83° feels like 89° with a dew point of 71° - 73°. I was really not feeling it today. The heat was just too much and I couldn't keep up the pace. It was one of those runs that makes me feel like I won't be able to finish my Half in November much less get a good time. I know that even if the weather isn't great it is most likely going to be a lot better than August. But it was still a discouraging run. Plus my hip feels kind of tweaky and that makes me anxious. I ended up running 6.22 miles in 1 hour 14 minutes and a 12:14 average pace. I figured my score would be lower for not hitting the pace and increasing the distance, but Hal said "right on target".
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon

Oh no @RunsOnEspresso, hope your hip gets better soon. IT Band injuries can be painful and take a while to heal. Hopefully it's just a niggle and not an ITB issue.0

Welp back to being under a heat warning! Depending on which local station you pay attention to it was anywhere between 98 and 112 heat index, felt more like 112 honestly! No cloud cover, felt like being baked alive. Also my knee with the weird meniscus has decided to start doing a thing again. My husband was feeling the heat more than I was so we walked a lot but honestly I wasn’t sorry to walk more because my knee was making my whole leg have problems, ankle, knee and hip too.
Supposed to be 10k plus walking to bring it up to 10 miles. Honestly maybe 5 miles running? And 9 something total.
Saw one other runner and he looked like he was riding the struggle bus all the way to struggle town. Lots of cyclists and a couple walking with the most adorable St Bernard puppy which they took out of the car, set down on the asphalt trail, and she immediately demanded to be picked up because her paws were too hot. Last I saw the woman was carrying the puppy, which didn’t look very sustainable for a long walk.
Since @Tramboman mentioned beech nuts, I realized I had no idea what a beech nut even looked like so I looked them up, and I don’t think they are common around here. What we get is loads and loads of hickory nuts, including pecans and walnuts which are both varieties of hickory. Who knew? Reading about it I learned there are a lot of varieties of hickory nuts, some delicious and others not. So today I picked up a hickory nut from the trail and brought it home to figure out what kind it was. Turns out the trees along the Greenline are Mockernuts, so called because they mock you by appearing to be good nuts, but when you open the shells, the shell is really thick and the meat is really tiny. I know there are pignut hickories at WC Johnson park, which aren’t good either, but it turns out that two of the other types at WC Johnson, steelhusk and shagbark, are reportedly delicious. So thanks @Tramboman for inspiring me to learn something new!5 -

Aug 20: 5.75
Aug 21: 2.29
Aug 23: 5.91
Total: 46.79/60 miles
@RunsOnEspresso I hope your hip feels better soon!
@kgirlhart That stinks about the heat. I really don't do well with it myself and never have. Give me cold anytime.
@rheddmobile That's really cool about the different nuts! My kids are going to school next week and our time as homeschoolers will be officially ended, which is bittersweet. One of my favorite things to do with them was have nature study days and we'd walk in the woods and explore all sorts of things. We'll still get to do a little of that, but it won't be as often as we used to and I will miss it!
