@globalhiker what a trip you must have had. These photos are gorgeous!!!
So glad you had a wonderful time.4 -
@dawnbgethealthy that AF rose looks refreshing. Nice label too.4
-
This week I had 4 AF and 3 with A - not too bad! I was droopy and groggy this morning so looking forward to the next few days being AF5

@globalhiker I absolutely love the pictures!!!!! Iām so glad you posted them. I canāt wait to see them for myself. It does look like weāre on another planet!
@lmlmrn I highly recommend Bellingham Washington for retirement- I lived there for three years. Doesnāt get much above 75 degrees in the summer or below 45 degrees in the winter. Since it (and other wonderful towns) are west of the Cascade Mountains, itās never too hot or too cold. Rarely snows. Absolutely beautiful scenery, tons of hiking, biking, canoeing, everything you could want for outdoor activities- including skiing at nearby Mt. Baker. Some really great restaurants too. The only downside is that itās overcast much of the year, but we took our Vitamin D supplements and went out to have fun, regardless of drizzle or overcast days. It rarely out and out pours.
AF again today, doing well on the challenge.5 -
@globalhiker - Absolutely love your photos! Beautiful.3

I'm in search of the perfect retirement spot and came to the conclusion to stay put in AZ and hopefully when I "fully" retire to have a very small and simple cabin with minimal cost and and maintenance in higher altitude. Even a 1 bed/1 bath with an outdoor area will do. I messed up once having 2 houses and it was just too much stress and work and cost. The ideal lifestyle for us is 7 months or so in AZ and the rest elsewhere. We do have great health care, lots of supermarkets, restaurants and shopping, entertainment and sports venues, a great airport, and very friendly and happy people. Bellingham may be on my radar for my retirement shack or maybe some place in Oregon because both are close to British Columbia and I love coastal pacific in the summer.4

I am continuing with my usual goals, 16-20 AF days per month.
Diary style
Saturday October 09 - 2 drinks in the afternoon and then went with AF options. Pumpkin Spice Bailey's concoctions. Very delicious and seasonal. Plan to be AF now until Wednesday or Thursday.
Sunday October 10 - AF - Split shift at work, but it was quiet, as I expect tomorrow will be since it is Thanksgiving and people will be home having Turkey.
Rolling total - 5AF day out of 10 days.3 -
Happy Thanksgiving @dawnbgethealthy.4

Hey gang....already headeding into middle of October. How us that possible?
Good time to do a goal check. Maybe tweak a few here and there to help make sure October does not spiral out of control.
I'm writing down all these retirement suggestions. Need to put them on my must see list when I finally hit the road to travel.
AF yesterday. I'm going for a minimum of 6 day streaks this month.
With allowable alcohol limits on Saturdays.
That should keep me at 10 or less drinks for October.

All this talk of where to retire has me dreaming too! We are all over the map- literally! Do we buy a lake house in PA? Go back to Bellingham? Go down to Kiawah Island? All great choices. But ultimately we will wind up wherever our kids settle. Now, if they are clear across the country from each other, then we have a big problem!!
Hope everyone has a great say!5 -
Thank you all for the retirement suggestions! Yes the west side of the cascades are truly paradise as far as activities, climate etc. (I actually live 1.5 hours south of Bellingham right now) I love the landscape here and climate, however......all my children now live in OH and AR.
@MissMay I think it is a great idea to tweak any goals or how YOUR journey of less alcohol looks. I have tweaked mine after my time at the fair.
I am tweaking it again since that one drink seems to have stalled any weight loss I had built up momentum too. So I will be changing it to 1-2 drinks on either Friday or Saturday and try really really hard to stay AF Sun- Thur, Friday.6 -
Dry Falls in Highlands NC! For perspective of just how big this fall is ... see the guy to the left on the walkway behind the falls.

OMG Lilylady3k, When I took my trip this summer NC I was so impressed. This just confirms it. What part of the state was the picture taken in? We only traveled on the west side of NC, we never made it to the coast5 -
@Lilylady3k holy moly that falls is amazing. At first I could not see the tiny guy on the left. It must have been spectacular in person.6
-
@Lilylady3k that dude is just a speck! Gorgeous falls.
Tonight will be a true test of my detox challenge- party for my dragon boat team tonight. I need to have dinner beforehand so I donāt arrive starving and scarf down crackers/ bread, and I hope there are some NA options. If not Iāll probably try for a wine spritzer again if I can get my hands on some seltzer.5 -
I ended up in a food coma yesterday afternoon. The Chinese restaurant in town has a crazy lunch special menu(no substitutes LOL).
So at the last minute, 2:55PM my car whips into their parking lot and we make the lunch special before it ends at 3:00PM.
The woman said "oh you'll be needing a take home container" when she brought out my lunch. Fried rice, pork egg foo young, teriyaki beef skewers all on this one plate.
Drank Chinese tea, no filler there. So when she passed by again she did a double take because there wasn't even a piece of rice left on the plate. Only bare skewers. LOL.
Only problem, had alot I wanted to do at home after that and 45 minutes through the door I was looking at the back side of my eye lids for an hour and a half.
I might contribute the nap as necessary because I moved and stacked patio stones on Sunday. Like 150 of them. Great weighted work out without hitting the gym.
Happy Tuesday

Sunday I was AF but Monday night I had 1.5 beers to take the "edge" off. Just feeling antsy and can't sit still! Going out for a run now and hopefully that will wear me out and I'll have an easier time today-planned AF.
Bellingham is in Washington, where there is no state income tax. No state tax on Social Security, 401ks, pensions. It could be a good spot to claim "main" residency. I could drive to Oregon for big shopping events (no sales tax) then drive across the border to British Columbia for summer trips. Then just keep the house in AZ for the winters.
Washington state always had the best variety of Indian restaurants too, which is a special treat for me.
Anyone have any input on Sequim, WA? It's always on the list of "sunnier" places in Washington and best places to retire but for some reason just looks way out there on the map.

Monday October 11 - AF - Ended up getting the afternoon off and spent 5 hours digging up potatoes - basically until dark. So badly wanted to have a few drinks after, but didn't. My weight is already way up from Thanksgiving foods which I have, since the big feast, been portioning out.

Sequim is a great small town but restate is pricey there, well all the towns around there are pricey only because it is on the strait of Juan de Fuca. Port Townsend and Port Angles are nice too but same problem. Pretty much any homes on the Olympic peninsula. LOL If you go west across the sound you have towns like Leavenworth and Gold bar which are great ski towns. Eastern WA is more dry and desert like with hills and gorges.
I grew up here and have travel all over the state including all 4 corners LOL we went to Republic a few years ago to search for fossils and while there went to a local rodeo. While watching you could see boarder patrol going back and forth.
We are just looking for a place that is a little more $$ friendly. Your tax information is correct on those items but don't think they don't get there money. Our gas tax is almost the highest in the US, there is a tax on alcohol to the tune of almost double the cost of the alcohol itself. Example say a bottle of whiskey $16.00, state tax 10% (average depending on city, county taxes) then spirit liter tax 20.5%. This happened when the people voted to move liquor sales from the government controlled stores to the retail sector i.e. grocery stores, etc. So your $16 bottle just turned into an investment. We are not taxed on food items though, and yes I have been known to drive down to Portland OR for large purchases.
Sorry did not mean to get so wordy....skip if WA is not the place for you6 -
Looking for social interaction out and about late yesterday in our town. 90% of the places are closed now or have limited days and hours for open business.
I told my husband last night after listening to his complaining, if every place YOU try to go to makes YOU angry, I think the problem lies with the person and not the place.
I remained AF yesterday but got a wicked sugar reaction from a root beer I drank. Not a soda person.5 -
I did a bad thing yesterday by shopping at 5pm -hungry and tired. Always the recipe for disaster. I guess I forgot...anyway I picked up a french fizzy rose because it was almost half-price and the bottle was unique. Suckered in by marketing once again! Needless to say, the pink fizz is all gone and no weight was lost. I am avoiding the scale today and staying out of stores!
@MissMay, why are stores mostly closed, is it temporary? Most of ours are open but the inventory is scanty, like tons of XS and XXXL sizes but nothing in between. Do you have rec centers or dance halls that are open now?
Signed up for Covid booster this weekend. Here comes shot #3. It's a bit scary since it's so new but I figured I've had lots of other shots throughout the years, boosters and all, and they worked.4 -
@lmlmrn maybe the high price of wine and liquors in WA is a good thing and would keep me out of trouble .4

Tuesday October 12 - AF - Finished up the potato garden thanks to help from my tenant. Another time when I felt like having a couple of drinks, but didn't.

@MissMay
Yes, why are so many things closed in your area?1 -
People on this side of Washington go over to Idaho to shop, less taxes.
Check out Coeur D'Alene @globalhiker
It is on a beautiful lake, with lots to do.4 -
Well I held my 'art' class today with 3 ladies, it was a hoot. I am glad I brought all my supplies. We are going to try and meet up again in a few weeks so they have time to practice.
I am still moderating with alcohol. But it could easily go south. I am struggling with my own mind set. I know once I commit I will commit, it is just not at this moment. I am frustrated with myself.
Keeping busy like today really helps.
@globalhiker Well the taxes have not slowed people down LOL it is just more convenient to shop at your local grocery store instead of finding a state run store. But we have been known to drive down to OR to shop (no sales tax, whoop whoop)7
