As a therapist, I’m really interested to listen to the podcast and read the study. I plan to listen tomorrow while I have a drive.
I have read everyone’s posts, and I’ll say that for everyone having health issues, I’m hoping for the best for all of you.
Yesterday, I ran speed repeats - 4x 4 min at 9:13, 3 min recovery, followed by 5x 30sec at 8:13, 1 min recovery. Today, I ran 2 miles in my parents’ neighborhood before brunch. We planned to have our annual family dinner, but my uncle tested positive for Covid yesterday, so that whole group isn’t coming. It will just be a quiet day with my parents instead.

Interesting topic. Not quite on topic but appropriate for our group. I do think that sometimes it can be a vicious cycle of exercise and eating spiraling up and up and up. I have seen it a few times and can also see the attraction. Part of the reason I cut back on miles and decided not to do the RTY again was it was just too much. At some point the spiral always ends in either binging or injury. Not something I care to have happen. So there has to be balance.8 -
8 miles this morning. Felt like Christmas in July! 68F with 21mph wind @ 10am. Started out trying to run 'sleasy' (slow & easy), but that felt really hard. So after a few miles I increased the pace and felt better. But then by mile 7 I was whipped, but pushed it for 1 more mile. I really wish I knew how to run.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.
December total: 61 miles
@rheddmobile Sorry you and DH are still feeling poorly. I went to the grocery store today and it was the same here. You would have thought it was going to snow or something. LOL
@marisap2010 Nice run. Sorry about your uncle coming down with CoVID. I hope he has a mild case and you enjoy your time with your parents.
Here is picture of my Christmas Eve sunset. I hope you all have a great evening and a very Merry Christmas for those who celebrate.6 -

Well, the foot injury put a stop to "Don't Rest December." Decided to take a day off instead of pushing it any further. I hope it's better by tomorrow.
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, and Happy Holidays to all!!!

I’ve really enjoyed doing some hiking the last couple of years so I’ve decided a long-term goal of section hiking the Appalachian Trail. I don’t plan to give up my running but in place of long weekend runs, there will be more weekend hiking. Since the AT runs close to where I live, I have hiked little pieces of it before in conjunction with other hikes. I’m not ready to give up my full-time job and dedicate a year to hiking it so a section hiker I shall be. Yesterday a friend and hike a 14-mile section from Sam’s Gap, NC to Spivey Gap, TN. Total elevation gain 3,964 feet. Total time including breaks 7 hours, 50 minutes.
Merry Christmas to all who believe! Peace and joy to all!8 -
@Tramboman Probably a wise decision. I hope the foot is better tomorrow. Merry Christmas to you too!
@Teresa502 That's an awesome goal. Love the pictures. The weather has been great for hiking the last couple of days. You have a great start.
We are having our Christmas family get together tomorrow. So, me, mom, and my neighbor William, had breakfast together today and had a nice visit. Then, he offered to help me wrap the rest of my gifts, so I loaded up the car and mom and I went to his house to do some wrapping, chat more, and have some laughs. After that, mom and I took the neighbor's dog that I am helping watch for a few days, for a walk along the creek. It has been a really nice Christmas Day. I hope everyone who celebrates has had a Merry Christmas and that all have had a wonderful day.6 -
I hope all who celebrated had a Merry Christmas! My kids were here and it was really nice. I didn't run today, but I don't usually run on Saturdays. I am planning on a run in the morning though.
I like your idea @quilteryoyo and if @skippygirlsmom and @shanaber are in agreement then I can set us up as "Keeping it Sleasy" on RTY 2022.3 -
@kgirlhart and @quilteryoyo - Sounds good to see too!. @kgirlhart - I sent you a follow request on the 2022 tracker. Not sure why it doesn't just maintain it across years but oh well...
The podcast/study discussion is interesting. I have no expertise in the area but I do think that you have to have a certain type of personality (a bit compulsive maybe?) to be able to run long distances, even training for a HM or Marathon and especially the longer distances. I do love that so many of us honed into the study size and makeup of the group. So many times I hear about this study or that where someone is saying it shows some result and when you look under the covers it was a handful of people and not a controlled environment.
I haven't run for the last couple of days. Spent yesterday clearing out the last of the junk in the rafters of the garage of the neighbors house we are selling. The house should close in the next week or so, YAY! After that I had baking to finish and it started pouring again. Weather people said it would be sunny and nice this morning but of course it was pouring again... so I stayed in and baked some more, because you know you can always use more cookies and pie 😊
We had a quiet Christmas with just the 2 of us but had a long call with our daughter who is enjoying a LOT of snow in the Pacific NW.
I will get out for something tomorrow even if it is raining again. It is expected to rain most of the next week so I need to get used to running in it again. I am not a sugar cube and I won't melt!6 -

Foot is still sore and swollen, so I guess this will be two consecutive days of no running. Can't remember the last time that happened -- probably when I was dealing with a bad back or achilles.

@Tramboman is this an injury or maybe a gout flare up? Im sorry you are having to rest up.
@Teresa502 those photos are gorgeous. I have a friend who did the thru hike several times over the years. I think doing bits and pieces sounds much more fun and doable.
I did only a short run yesterday as I needed to run over to my brother's for a Christmas meetup. They were having a really large family extended lunch but I chose to skip it because every single place I turn everyone is getting covid now. I really don't want to be a crowd follower. But I did manage to visit a little with my niece. Her kids get bigger everytime I see them (about 6 months).

@shanaber Glad you will be closing on the house next week. I hope you are able to get out and enjoy a rainy run today. You are pretty sweet though, so you might melt.
@Tramboman I'm so sorry that your foot is worse today. I hope it starts feeling better. Have you tried soaking it in Epsom Salts?

It rained overnight so it was very foggy and damp out this morning but the temp was only 48F so no complaints! The temp is supposed to warm up to 60 so I’m planning to ride my bike this afternoon.
I know you hated to loose your running streak @tramboman but I’m glad you are listening to your body and taking care of that foot. We’re in this for the long haul!

Those pictures are beautiful of your hike @Teresa502. That is a very cool goal to work on. Will you be able to do short trips to several sections from where you live? It will be a big undertaking but so interesting to see the different sections across all the states. I've done a piece of it in the White Mountains in New Hampshire and that was amazing - we ran into a guy that was working on the whole thing.
@Tramboman hope the foot feels better soon.

Met some friends for running this morning. It's so confusing as to what day it is or even what time of year with the changing weather. Yesterday I didn't run because it was cold rain all day. It was very dreary but made for a nice cozy time to be inside. Today was a little colder so we had some snow flurries in the morning, turning to rain later as I finished my run. Not terrible but the damp cold is the worst so I would rather it just get colder and snow.
I'm hopeful that I'll make my goal for this month, which would be the highest mileage month of the year for me. I should have run a longer run today but I should be able to pull off an average of 3.5 miles per day for the next 5 days being off from work. I hope!

@Tramboman sorry you are fighting a sore / swollen foot. Don't be too upset about your streak. The most important thing is to let it heel so you can run again.
Got 10 miles in this morning. Really needed a long run after eating all the food yesterday. But had to cut it short since I woke up late and had to meet mom for breakfast. But felt good after the first mile.
December total: 71 miles.4 -
Re: da foot.
The pain is on the outside edge, roughly halfway between the heel and the toe. It's worst when I first get up in the morning; it feels better as I walk on it. I think it's a tendon issue. I'm confident that running rest will eventually heal it, and I promise to stop my complaining.7 -
@Tramboman you MUST keep us informed. We never will think of it as complaining.... Perhaps this means you need new shoes?
7 humid dank warm miles this morning in Tx. 127.42 to date for the month. My lightest running month this year was August so I am pretty sure that I will beat that month. It felt good to run longer today even with the strange late Dec weather.
Well done on the 10 miles @Scott6255 it's been quite a while since I did that but since I took the half out of my goals I haven't really felt the need to do a lot of distance.4 -

I ran 10 miles this morning and made my goal for December. I should have gotten up earlier because it was pretty warm, 62°F at the start, 76°F at the end. It was windy too, but it actually helped it not to feel so hot, so it wasn't too bad. I definitely kept it "sleasy" today. I was only thinking I would run 8 miles, but I felt good and I just kept running. I saw Sunny the donkey in her house and finally got a picture of her looking out the window.
@teresa502 Those pictures are gorgeous. I can't wait to hear about your hikes.
@Tramboman I am glad you are resting the foot and hope it is better soon.
@shanaber I accepted your request on RTY. And I created the team "Keeping it Sleasy". I didn't send invites to join because I don't think I have your email addresses, but I think you and @skippygirlsmom and @quilteryoyo can request to join now.

@Teresa502 My husband and I have talked about hiking the whole AT at some point. We used to do a lot of hiking and backpacking. My husband actually ran into Jennifer Pharr Davis, who used to hold the AT record, while on a hike and recognized her from reading her book.
@Tramboman I hope your foot issue isn't too serious and that it feels better after the rest.
I skipped my run yesterday because my sinus issues had me feeling pretty bad. I left my visit with my parents early so that I could go home and sleep. I feel a little better today, so I did a six mile run. It was supposed to be a little longer, but it was already 70 degrees when I got out to run, so the combo of not feeling 100% plus temps had me stop a little earlier than planned.
Total for December: 57.47 miles6 -
So sorry I started a discussion, then disappeared 😆. Christmas, of course. I am enjoying reading all of the thoughts and insight that's being shared! Thank you!
One thought I have is an example I see of a healthy choice... ending a streak because of a foot injury. There is an in-between of not being sure, is this an injury, maybe I'll try and see. But there are also people who fully know they are hurt and running will harm them, but they go run anyway. I appreciate that this group encourages the healthy choices.
I did my HM-distance run on the 24th and have been enjoying the holiday.

Nice running everyone.
@katharmonic I'm with you in not knowing what day or time of year it is. Last year on Christmas day we had 4" of snow and it never got above freezing. This year it was in the 60's. It's crazy.
@Tramboman You don't have to stop complaining. That's partly why we are here - to commiserate when we can't run for whatever reason. Our non running friends just don't understand. I do hope rest is all it needs and it heals quickly.
@kgirlhart Where do I find the link to request to join? I'm so technologically challenged. Love the pictures of Sunny. That's too cute.
I hope you feel better @marisap2010 .
@polskagirl01 Cool that you caught the deer in the picture. Nice snowy run.

After being off work for a few days it seemed like it was the middle of the night when the alarm clock went off at 4:00 am. The weather was a nice 45F though. We are supposed to get rain later today and much of the week. (@shanaber are you sending your rain our way from California?) We changed up our route this morning after seeing some sketchy people and hearing what sounded like a couple of gun shots. As we neared the end of our run and was almost back to our cars there were three police cars that passed us speeding in that direction.
@katharmonic – I’m hoping to do a few 2-day and 3-day overnight sections each year. The two friends that I hiked the Grand Canyon with earlier this year are also interested in doing sections as are a few others. It will take me several years to complete the entire trail, but hopefully I will get there one day!

Still have a cold. I spent the day in bed, then woke up and wanted to at least walk. I was at that state of being sick where you don’t know until you get out there how you are going to feel. Ended up running most of three miles, total about six. My husband is still sicker than I am, but improving, he ran about two miles with me before crapping out.
Santa brought me some new summer running clothes and I got to wear them this past night - our low last night was in the high sixties. That’s the low! I am running the AC during the days.5 -

VICTORY (sort of)
Foot felt better today, so I thought I'd do some easy treadmill to test it. Tried to do full range of motion so as to flush out any issues -- felt the same at the end as it did at the start. Resisted the urge to go any farther or any faster. We'll see how it is tomorrow, Fingers crossed.

@Tramboman HURRAY!!! Well done and hopefully it will be good tomorrow am also!
I twisted my knee a little yesterday afternoon somehow (no idea) so I started out my run slowly to test it out and of course that broke my streak of under 10 min miles. But I did manage 4 without it complaining too much and overall the pace was under 10 so quite happy with that. I was a little stressed that this was a reinjury to my meniscus which kept me out of running any distance over 2 for over 20 years but apparently not. WHEW!
Today was 4.03 and Dec total 131.45 out of 100 or less planned.7 -

I got new shoes for Christmas! New Balance Rebelv2, so far I absolutely love them
@Teresa502
Beautiful pictures! I have the AT going about 2 hours from where I live. The past two years I’ve tried to get out a few times to do a day hike. It’s so humbling to know I’m on a trail that spans such a great distance. I’ve completed most of Massachusetts and Connecticut but it’s going to get harder to do more of it because of the distance from home. I hope to upgrade to some overnight and weekend hikes as my kids get older.

Been MIA for a few days as I wasn't running over Christmas. Getting caught up today and back to the plan. It was kind of nice to have 3 whole days with no running and plenty of sleep. I now feel super rested. In fact, I woke up naturally at 5 am because I'm so well rested and forced myself to go back to sleep. It was a light sleep but I just didn't want to get up that early if I didn't have to.katharmonic wrote: »I found the questionnaire results that assessed whether participants were at risk for mental health and eating disorders more compelling than the reported prior diagnoses (though those rates are interesting and significant as well). The questionnaires they used look pretty comprehensive and not just asking if the person ever feels depressed, anxious, etc and they are well validated measures. The rates of risk were more than doubled in the group that trained >20 hours week compared to 10-20 hrs/week in almost all categories including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bulimia, binge eating, suicide and self harm. It's not answering the cause and effect but it's a very interesting effect that we probably intuitively predict that there is a point where more exercise and training is detrimental.
Absolutely! Seeing such a discrepancy in the >20 hour group really makes you think.
@Teresa502 That's an awesome goal! I can't remember if we talked about this before but, have you seen any videos from homemade wanderlust aka Dixie? I love her hiking videos, and while she won't talk me into a big through-hike, it has really piqued my interest in some longer hikes and maybe a bigger section hike.
@Scott6255 I would like to learn how to run too! Let me know when you figure it out!
@Tramboman Glad your foot is feeling better after a bit of rest. I hope it stays that way!
@kgirlhart Thanks for the Sunny update! I love those!
@rheddmobile Man that cold sounds rough. Hope you guys feel better soon.5
