first ride in 2 weeks - I've been feeling off for the last week (either work stress or sick, not sure), but I finally got to the gym today and set a PR on a 90 min ride!
I'm 300 KM short for my 400 KM badge for the month, but if I can get an outdoor century done over the weekend it's not impossible to make up the rest over the next two weeks.

Just finished murdering my legs in Zwift. Wasn't so much the distance as it was the over 8000 ft of elevation gain on a smart trainer with its difficulty turned up to maximum.

So no outdoor centuries this month - there are wet leaves covering the ground everywhere and it rains every single *kitten* day, so I just know I am going to slide off the path and into a canal. Could try it on the Peloton, but as there's only 2 of them in the gym I'd only feel comfortable hogging one during the weekend (university gym, pretty empty on weekends) - either way will attempt to hit my 400 KM this month.
Oh and I've started to wonder about cycling the NC500 next year. I'm decent at endurance, I've done 200 KM in a day before and I wouldn't be doing it before April at the earliest. It'd have to be a solo trip - can't think of anyone else who would go for it - my partner starts whining at 40 KM.

I feel you about those long solo adventures. That's how most've my riding is - my SO has a day job, and doesn't have the endurance for more than about 10 miles. The kid? She lasts for about 7 before the whine-o-meter is dialed to full.
Hence why I do so much Zwifting these days.

The right Peloton in the gym broke and they went ahead and put an out of order sign on the left one, leaving both unusable, so I tried out a Wattbike instead. Turns out my pedal strokes are super uneven. I'm considering buying clip in shoes. I've never tried them before. Any suggestions?

@15822
I have a Peloton at home and clip in with the shoes that came with the bike.. really helpful
No suggestions as I didn't pick them, but just a vote for them for sure!2 -

Clip shoes - get them exactly your size. Slop isn't good for power performance. If you can find zip-closures in your size, go for it. Mine are velcro, and while I don't mind much, they can sometimes be a pain in the butt in the middle of a long endurance ride when you just want to slack them a smidge mid-pedal stroke because your feet are swelling at mile 80 and you have 20 more to go.
Make sure you buy the right system, too! I think they use SPD's on Wattbike (don't quote me), which is a pretty common Shimano clip system. DON'T accidentally buy SPD-SL!! This is an entirely different system! SPD is a mountain/gravel/cyclocross clip that's metal, insanely durable and meant for quick clip in/clip out in muck. This is the system I have on all of my bikes, gravel and road, because I love it. It does make a tiny hot spot on your foot during very long, very hard efforts due to the small contact area, though, so that's a pretty major drawback.
SPD-SL is very similar to the Look KEO cleats. These are typically made of plastic and are meant for road bikes. They have a large contact area, therefore don't create those little hot spots, but they're also plastic and wear out rather quickly, plus they're hard to walk in. SPDs are usually recessed into your shoe (so you can run in them in cyclocross races) so you don't have to walk like a gimp with your cycling shoes on lol - those plastic cleats elevate your toes and make it hard to walk. Plus walking on hard surfaces warps the clip edge, and you get to replace cleats quite often (I've had my little metal SPD clips for years now and have never replaced them).
There's also speedplay clips, which I've never experienced but I've heard are pretty bomb. The people that have them love them. I've just never worn them, so I can't give any insight.
Anyway, ride today. Been down with the flu so scrapped my planned 150 miler last week. Started a Zwift 'tour of' event instead to get back into the swing of things now that I can sit upright without vertigo.

@wendsg thanks for the detailed post! They do look like SPD pedals, I guess I can ask the gym staff - anyway looks like the cleats are not the expensive part and they're replaceable. The shoes are so expensive though! I currently cycle in £10 running shoes because my good running shoes are too wide for pedals.
In other news, that's the 2022 KM challenge done! Onto the miles...

Man, @ashleycarole86 is rippin' it up!
And congratulations, @15822 for finishing the km challenge!!! Cleat shoes can be quite pricy, but the velcro closure ones work well enough. I bought mine for $60 USD, which according to le Google is 51 pounds (sorry, dun know the key comman to make the spiffy symbol). Just browse around - you'll likely find specials, especially with the holidays coming up. I know there's many cycling gear sites that are ramping up to have major after-Thanksgiving sales, and they'll either be located in Europe or ship internationally.
Ride today! Doing Tour of Makurai Islands in Zwift is fun.

Thanks, @ashleycarole86 !! Do wish it'd been a bit higher, but I did this test correctly (no getting out of the saddle) so I think this is a little more accurate than my last FTP Zwift recorded (it records every time you ride, so all those 'out of the saddle and dying' attempts up the Alpe du Huez (called Alpe du Zwift in-app) really mucked the numbers.
And now on to today's ride, and not typoing a 7 as a 4 this time lol
