@forestdweller1 Hello! I’m Melissa! I’m one of the newbies!
So sorry about your heart attack AND Covid. Sounds like you are doing much better though! I’ll bet money it was the waiting room at the lab where you caught it. We’ve been so careful, but my husband hurt his foot last September, went to the clinic for and X-ray, and then got a call he’d been exposed by 3 positive staff. Fortunately, he didn’t get it, but this was during delta when the cases were so severe. It just seemed so ironic.
@luciebrucie Well said,4 -
Welcome back @forestdweller1 and glad that you've made it through such a challenging time and then some. You make me aware that every day is a gift and new opportunity to do good for ourselves. Life and good health can be taken away at any moment so it is a very precious and very important thing.
I do have a question for the group here since I am still falling into the same repeated trap and I want to solve this, so here is the scenario:
I do "good" several days in a row, all of it: the diet, the exercise, the right sleep, the no drinking, I power through 12 hour days of intense work...I even logged 6 miles of hill run on Monday. After a multi-day stretch, my mind tells me I deserve a reward and it's OK to drink because I deserved this. And I fully believe I have the right to reward myself. Does this "I deserve a reward" thinking come from my childhood (my parents always rewarded me with food - if I went to ballet then afterwards I got pizza....if I went to the YMCA to swim class...afterwards we got McDonalds or whatever-and each and every time I would over-indulge). ?
As a solution, in the past I went out of my way to reward myself with non-food/non-drink rewards (skincare products, clothes) but this is not working now.
Any ideas of how to solve this problem?4 -
@globalhiker
Yes, we are like Pavlov's dogs, conditioned to rewards.
We deserve rewards. Sorry that non-food/drink rewards aren't working for you right now.2 -

@missmay I’d say keep your streak going, you asked for a oo and if you don’t see the second bottle you’d of been none the wiser.
@forestdweller1 - so much to have gone through!! Sending you hugs 💪💪3 -
Hello everyone,
Still waiting for baby to arrive, or at least waiting for them to tell me baby has arrived.
@forestdweller1 nice to meet you, wow what a year you have had! I had a struggle with food for about 9 months last year because of side effects to medications. I too lost about 20+lbs but have gained some of it back once the problems where identified.
Today I am smoking a chicken in my 'lil chef' then finish in the oven in an hour or so. In a few weeks it is DH birthday and he always likes a turkey. So I buy an extra one at Thanksgiving and cook it for his birthday in Feb. Well the reason for the experiment with the chicken is to see if it can be done for one. Second I want to see the taste and if we like it repeat with a turkey.
More later3 -
yeah she is here, Let me introduce you to Big Sister Scarlet Mae to her new sister Elsie Claire

No need for translation, @MissMay , Eldest Daughter's DH was born & bred in Maine & they currently live in Louisiana. Odd how similar "Cajun" and "Down East" accents are. Ayuh ??
So lucky you discovered the beer mix up in time [a BIG hush to the barmaid]. And kudos to the beer folks for making an alcohol free product that tastes so similar to the "real" thing. After I finish my current bottle of Chianti, I plan to go back to 00 and Coors Edge. NO to nasty alcohol free wine.
Oh, @globalhiker , if I could only figure out how to keep an AF streak going, without the threat of sudden death...LOL!! I would certainly share !!
@SavageMrsMoose ...we are sent to medical centers where we are exposed to the very dangers we are trying to avoid...makes me dizzy... ...glad to hear your DH escaped infection.
🤗 back atcha @77topcat .
@lmlmrn ...such adorable little girls, so sweet. One Christmas I charcoal grilled some turkey legs. Surprisingly awesome. When Eldest Daughter was still living across the street from me she would go B-S crazy whenever I would smoke a pork shoulder on my patio. The puffs of smoke would send her running over just to make sure her Aged P hadn't set the house on fire !!
Friday starts a wineless weekend. And beyond....

8 days AF, but starting to negotiate with myself.
So I recognize what I'm doing, and will try to stay true4 -
Good day to everyone!
Thank you for the congrats on the new addition to our family. HEHE I had so much to do with it after all. I only produced the grown up mom (with a little help). The rest (all) was orchestrated by a power much higher than "mom".
Last night AF, during the week is pretty easy it is the weekends (Friday-Sunday) that I can struggle with. Since this is Superbowl weekend. I am planning what we will do on Sunday. Spoiler alert, we are not big fans of watching sports on TV. So I am trying to decide what meal I will cook (I hold no illusion on getting takeout). Then what movie DH and I will hunker down with. I am leaning towards a Disney flick.
@forestdweller1 my smoker will only do that 'smoke' added foods. It is great to get the flavor in jerky and it will dry it out eventually (15-20 hours). But when I do meats I smoke for about 1-1.5 hours then finish in the oven. But the thought of smoking a pork shoulder or even a roast then slow roasting in the oven....my mouth is watering and I may have to take a trip to the 'chef store' to get a roast or two.
@MissMay I am really getting itchy feet and as the weather here seems to be staying almost mild, the paint pool is seriously wanting to come out and play. I have now two large canvases to repurpose. One I put gesso on and some of it cracked so I will have to take sandpaper and try to do damage control. The over I need to lightly sand and coat. I have been procrastinating on the mirror image of the black and white one. I am almost done and actually can't wait to put them side by side to see if they come close to mirror each other. Most likely they don't But that is fine.

@lmlmrn Congratulations! Lucky you and for sure you'll have many wonderful moments ahead with the little one.
@dawnbgethealthy I hope you can find ways to stay connected with your best friend. I have a childhood best friend in Europe and we just Skype. And we do try to pick a place to travel to and meet up somewhere in the world at least every other year. Hope to see you in June and fingers crossed Covid soon becomes a thing of the past.
No planned drinks for today for me. But I am out of sparkling water and need to stock up.2 -
Hello all!
@globalhiker I am the same way about feeling like I deserve a reward. I think it’s because the food and alcohol is such a quick, immediate reward. I’ll let you know if I figure out how to solve this! Not there yet!
I’m now AF for 12 days. Goal is at least 30, ideally staying AF until after the Boston Marathon.
I’m running on behalf of a charity- Stepping Strong. Founded by the family of Gillian Remey, who lost her leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Just learned last night that the charity has helped fund research for bionic prosthetics, with 34 successful surgeries to date. Prosthetics that the person can control- with their mind. Let that sink in. Blows my my mind. So incredible to be part of the team.
Just wanted to share.

Yes, looking forward to your visit!!!
Hopefully the Covid restrictions make it a little easier by then to travel.2 -
Phew another temptation dodged today. DH came home early and we both were hungry. That is usually the local pub for a beer(s) and food. Well DH was not feeling very good, he has been feeling 'off' for the past three days but no covid symptoms. Anyway he did not want to go inside anywhere and we ended up picking up teriyaki.
so just checking in3 -

Hey everyone! I'm still here but super annoyed my phone and Nook are giving me troubles since an update came through on both of them, both Samsung brand.
Beautiful pics @lmlmrn. Big congrats you way.
@globalhiker it seems we all have or had the wicked urge to reward ourselves for "being good" as our brains perceive it. That was always the downside to my AF streaks. Because in the earlier days of trying to drink less I got sucked into I drink a drink, the one drink takes a drink and it snowballs from there. I like your idea of rewarding yourself with a run. (I envy your ability to run, I could not run 60' because of an old knee injury.) So GO GET YOUR REWARD!
Gong away tommorrow through Tuesday night. Superbowl event, then Valentines Day dinner while we are out of state. I've done this 49 days AF, I do plan to have a drink or two the two days I am away. Nothing crazy, no entire bottles of prosecco for this gal any more. That is equal to 7 standard drinks. YIKES I can remember doing that without blinking an eye.
AF
49th day and have been most pleased with the flat tummy as a bonus benefit of no drinks.5 -
Feb 1-2 - AF
Feb 3-5 - stuck with 2 drink limit
Feb 6-9 - AF
Feb 10 - 12 - 2 drink limit
Feb 13- AF - now that I've gotten good with 4 days AF then 3 days with A, I'm going to try for 5 days AF this week, meaning gonna try for no wine on Thursday!5 -

Hello Everyone! I would like to try joining you.
I have to be honest, I think I am too old or something for this part of the app. It seems awkward to navigate and I can’t ever find anything. LOL
I used to be on WW. It really helped me with my weight and I liked their community but…life!
Anyway, I have been here a while but haven’t found a place I belong and stumbled on this discussion. I am starting feel like I need a break from alcohol and I know it helps keep weight off.
Maybe checking in with people who have similar goals will help keep me on track.
Have a great Sunday!8 -
We're making smoked pulled pork, coleslaw, and macaroni salad for the Superbowl. So delicious. Pork cooks over 12 hours outside using a mix of apple and pecan woods. It makes the neighborhood smell divine outside. We do have to pick up family at the airport at half-time. I'm not stocking up on wine for guests.
Valentines? We're skipping going out because it is REALLY EXPENSIVE around here. The decent restaurants have cut their menus and prices are 25-100% higher. Many just offer a Valentines' only menu starting at a crazy price. Not my thing plus we cook amazing food, usually predictably better than eating out. My love is taking me out for a day hike next weekend and that is my perfect gift.3 -
