Had spontaneous dinner at home yesterday. About every 2 weeks or so I grab a bite with a friend and this time logistically it was more practical to grab a bite in my neck of the woods. Since it was snowy out we ended up eating in, very spontaneously. I didn't have much around: a few seeds for snack and some fortified wine I've had a good while, and some stir fried cauliflower, leeks and onions (a bit wintery and white for my taste, but that's all I had!), rice lentils and some tofu. Then yogurt w frozen berries and maple syrup. Very much my regular fare split by two. We usually eat out: seafood and not all that much veggies in dishes out, whereas here we were heavy on the veggies. Healthier and less expensive! And being inside rather than at a restaurant (tables are not very far apart in restaurant..) first sitting in easy chairs... made it a bit easier to talk about some subjects, with no random unknown ears about. nothing top secret, or taboo, but I noticed we talked more easily about some subjects.

I haven't had a friend over for spontaneous off-the-cuff meal in ages.

We'll probably alternate some between eating in and eating out now...

I'm so tired these days. I feel like doing much beyond the absolute essentiel and urgent (teaching, etc) is almost beyond me, meaning I get backed up on some things.

The spontaneous simple meal in was a nice treat.

Okay, well gonna do two or three things.
Need to pick up something, order grocery delivery, I'll pop by my café.
I have a. ton of paper work admin stuff to do...
Not attractive but getting to be quite urgent.

    Weight ups and downs ponderings
My weight has been up these past days and weeks and months, but is lower today on average for the year I'd say (so: slightly lower than past days). Could be fluctuation. We'll see. All in all I'm still up a good 9 k ( up 17%! ) from about 9 years back, pre-menopause and pre COVID. and 7 k up (up 12%) from 5 years ago! A few days ago I was just over the maximum ideal BMI. :/

I know that seems like a great goal for some, no judgement, either way. And for others that's way above your comfort zone. (it's above mine, but I deal!).

But we each have our own experience and feelings, and path and comfort zones And for me I'm mostly around the heaviest I've been in life. I was a hair heavier at around age 24 very briefly, and was very very athletic at the time... Back then I had more of a complex about it though. Now I feel less energetic, and I don't like the belly weight look, but I'm far far, less identifying my being with my weight. I have to reckon with it when shopping for clothes etc, but when I'm going through life it's mostly not an issue.
People here tend to be quite slim, so that's a thing to deal with too, The AVERAGE BMI here for women is 23.2 (including the very overweight averaged in). I guess I was around 21 or 22 BMI a few years back. I'd like to be around 22 or 23.

It's true that thighs tend to get thinner with age, so that's something ! :)
My face used to be VERY round too, till my mid/early 30s, and now it's not, which is mostly better, though can drag.
When I was around 34 I lost about 4k spontaneously and easily but at the same time my face went from VERY round to normal. Some friends or colleagues said I looked like I had lost a ton of weight from my face, and for them they thought it was more than 4K, because the change in the face was so dramatic. Long lasting baby fat/baby face I guess...

I know heather and some others you have said that there can be some plusses to having a slightly higher BMI in later years.
Anyway I think over 25 is not ideal.
It also feels heavier to walk around...more effort...So...

I'd like to lose a few, get back to where I was at 5 years ago...

But I'm not able to make HUGE efforts to get there, at present.
Feels like there is so much else on the table to deal with.

    We'll see.

    Morning, afternoon and evening, y'all,

Hope everyone's weekends are off to a lovely start.

Vicki, So sorry about Jake. As Karen said, it's such a hard but loving decision.

For all of you who bring home the dogs and cats that desperately need a chance at life, I'm so impressed with your bravery and how big your hearts are. We can't help but know that those decisions will come at the end of their lives - when there are more bad days than good. We adopt them anyway because they deserve a chance to love and be loved, however brief it may be.

I think someone asked, and yes, Egg was a rescue. A friend had two different feral mamas give birth under her porch in a couple of days, so she had at least ten kittens under there. I sent her daughter under to grab one and Egg was the one who came out, yowling like mad as we put her in a carrier so I could get her home.

I want to get a dog, as well, but Corey has put his foot down for now, and with good reason. That reason is Egg, who is truly his baby - she's in the bedroom now, lying next to him while he flips around the internet for hours on end. After his shower, she's waiting to have hers - he pets her all over with his wet hands, and she goes out in the hall after and licks herself dry.

She is always waiting for him when he comes in the door after work, and they always walk the yard after he gets his stuff all put away. She talks to him while they're walking, and he talks back. Makes my heart grow three sizes every time.

Rained all night, so not much to do outside today. I started logging my food again. I know that if I don't log, I don't get where I want to be, which is lighter.

    Later, y'all,
    Lisa in AR

Barbie: Many thanks. Where would we be without you. 😂
I am finding that I am buying very little these days, except essentials. Retail therapy no longer appeals.

THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES OR SHORTCUTS to achieving permanent change.
REMINDERS One or two thoughts which might give heart to some of you.
      • Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be as much as 2 lbs a day for no apparent reason.
      • A general downward trend is what we are looking for.
      • Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.
      • The human body does not react instantly to what we do to it. Sometimes it can take several days to see results.
      • Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
      • The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
      • When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.
      • Getting/Staying fit and healthy requires a lifestyle change for most people.
Stick with the process. It DOES work! But it does take time, effort, and most of all, patience!

Wow! Did I have issues getting here! First time I’ve had this much trouble! Missed 2 days so skimmed a bit. First I couldn’t log into the group at all, it would time out. Contacted MFP and they admitted to some issues on their end. Then I couldn’t find the new link in the March thread so searched to find you all. Phew! Glad I got it!

DS is doing good, back to his old self and I convinced him to get the prescriptions. He’s taking them and all is well with the world right now.

Except for my eating and energy level. I think my body doesn’t know how to react without major anxiety?!
    Where’s PIP’s boot when I need it! 😂

Prayers, hugs, kudos, and thoughts always for you all!

    Just one thing: bupkes.
    Workin’ on it: 142.6, H20x4, active :
1: Commit to being more active this month, starting today. Truth this. At least 30 mins walking EVERY day.
2: Spend as much time as possible outdoors today.

Off to a good start with steps, CICO even a little morning activity and legs up the wall. Play training won’t be the concentrated 5 mins at a time, but integrating throughout the day. Gino already sits like a champ, so we’re working on come, down and STAY. Ashamed to be so wimpy about our blustery winds. Pooped out on dog group Wednesday due to 35mph gusts, then today chickened out on the walk to Chetco Point when I felt the winds pushing me toward the cliff’s edge. Fortunately Azalea Park was sheltered and pleasant.

Lisa, in the past our rescues’ names have been so just awful we’ve changed them soon as we got to know their personalities. So far, Gino, is Gino and will likely continue to be. He’s a happy go lucky puppy until a deer comes up the drive or a car goes by the road. Then he’s all business schnauzer-guard. Pack is settling in despite Tumble’s continued grumbles. Thanks for the tornado map, the visual really helps! Your home sounds like it suits you both to a T.
KJ enjoy your rest. If it was me, I’d nap and read rather than do taxes and bills, just sayin’. ;)
Heather, Ginny, Vicki, s s snow? :noway:
Ninja it IS a lot to get to know all of us. Take your time, we were all new once. ((hugs)) for all the grief and dislocation. To your goals I’d add being patient and gentle with yourself. ((hugs))
Annie thanks! Sometimes it seems Gino brings Joe's and my heart dogs (Blackie, Jocko, Robby/General Lee, Scooter) back to us. Feels right as he’s may be our last new dog. Good “resist the cookies” with protein strategy. Knee exercises work, but then I feel better and “forget” to do them, then get reminded… ;)
Vicki (((hugs))) so very hardest thing to do. Kindest but damn it hurts.
Rebecca we love the Franz 24 organic grain and seed bread, especially the thin sliced, also the whole wheat. Thanks for the collagen reminder, might help my ageing ligaments. the china collage.
Betsy “…come back as a dog” sounds like heaven to me ;) ((hugs)) held extra long. Isn’t it strange how time compresses and stretches when we’re grieving? Just eating and drinking fluids and walking Ella sounds perfect to me. Like you said to Ninja, be kind and patient with yourself. ((hugs))
Michele, love the two cats’ happy ending stories. We are blessed to have a no kill shelter here. They’ve recently taken in a bunch from high kill shelters in TX. Back in Idaho, the humane society frequently received dogs from over full shelters in So. Calif. These networks of shelters and their volunteers are true angels.
Dang, Machka, you have unmasked me! Rhody.
    Katla do you do any exercises for your knee? I’m reminded that they work, only if I do them ;}

    Lighter, lovelies!

I don't know if this collagen is helping me, or another one of the things I do, just to do them. My first was a non flavored, dissolving powder, and this is a collagen creamer made with coconut milk. Either way I mix it in my coffee. Putting the recommended 2 scoops a day into my mixture didn't fair too well. I don't drink my coffee quick enough! There was a whole whitish sludge thing going on (shivers). I had turkey, havarti cheese, with butter on the Franz 24 bread, heaven! This was after I had fixed Lee his dinner and the scent of bacon had done me in. Ah well, its day one today!
The 1tsp of the Brags apple cider vinegar in my Pellegrino water (just 8 oz), is REALLY good! Like a summer shooter.😂👍. I think I might be doing that 3 times a day.

TOTALLY blanked out that it was April 1st yesterday and posted on the old thread... smh.

Here's what I said...Rebecca, you and Athena are two peas!
"Like a fish in a shark tank!" That's hilarious. I just can't get over that map. It's amazing. My FIL was a Chief too. God Bless him. Daddy served in the Navy as well. Cousin retired as an Army officer. Bro is a Marine vet and my uncle was one of the Chosin Few. Still gives me chills just typing that one. Anne thought about the Navy, but went to visit ALL of the recruiters, completely on her own and let them sell her. She made her own decision with our blessing.

Have a wonderful weekend, y'all! Hopefully we're looking at warming up a bit here.

So... now that I've caught up, WHEW! That was a lot of skimming... I'm sure I missed a BUNCH! Sorry. Love and hugs and kisses.

Welcome to all the NEWBIES and "oldies" coming back. LOL

Isn't that interesting, Betsy, that you feel better having Jack "home" again with you. Lacy said that too. We did not understand that, make no mistake. You have to go through it, I'm sure. But she held onto the box for a long while. Now, it just sits in her home. Her current husband is very understanding and Shawn's family adores Nick. Thankfully everyone gets along.

Machka!!! That is so cool! Thank you for sharing. I've always wondered about your name, but simply assumed that it was an ethnic or screen name. Do you mind me asking what your "other life" name was? I'm not coming up with an anagram for Machka.

I'm late to the page today. I went running this morning. It was frosty overnight, but a gorgeous morning, so I took advantage of it. Saturday is Parkrun, on the seafront promenade, so I have to be sure to make the return loop at the toilet block by 8.55, or I will be mown down. :p
Came home via the deli, where I made some purchases, and bought a newspaper next door.
Then it was 25 mins rowing.
Just got my ablutions finished before my promised phone call to L, who lost her husband before Christmas. Her text the night before had sounded desperate, so I scheduled the call.
She answered in tears and was in physical and emotional pain, but I think I did some good work with her for over an hour. She said I had a special place laid for me up in heaven! :D Then she jokingly asked how much I charged! :p I made her laugh a few times and I think she is approaching the point when she will be able to truly look at the truth of their relationship. She does have a very good proper therapist and a nice doctor, when she can actually get to see him.
So I came downstairs feeling I had done my best.
Strangely, during my run, I was listening to a podcast about communication and connection and about the near-misses we often make when we try to "cheer people up". It was enormously helpful and one of those extraordinary coincidences. Just what I needed at the time.

Otherwise a quiet day with a delicious cauliflower and Feta frittata.I cooked it in my new huge frying pan, so there is some left for lunch tomorrow. Did some more rowing and stationary cycling after lunch while watching my German series. Sadly, it's finished.

Watched a Michael Moseley programme on sleep while I cooked.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Did a Denise Austin DVD since I realized that I’d just done the Firm DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 DVD

How many people knew that M’s currency is waterproof????

Barbara – our Humane Society does the same thing – takes in cats/dogs from all over. Makes me feel good

I’m thinking that I may need new glasses when I go to see the eye MD probably in Sept or Oct. Does anyone know of a website where you can look to see how glasses would look, what looks good and what doesn’t???

Allie – so sorry about your friend’s husband

Sold some more jewelry that I haven’t worn in at least 15 years, got another $840. So another $800 in my landscape fund

Am making a pork loin in the IP. I’m not sure I like it for thick roasts. Also made some rice in the IP for tonight and later in the week.

Barbie ... thank you for leading us into another month!

Barbara ... congrats on the new fur baby!

Rebecca ... Athena is most definitely your "mini-me!" So glad your oldest son keeps you in the loop and with photos yet!

Katla ... First, I am so very, very glad that your daughter has been such a big help these last couple of weeks. Indeed, you are blessed. I also understand how difficult it is to make changes and to allow others besides family to come into our spaces ... even when the intent is to help and we know it's the best thing to do. The changes you are making now will ensure that you and your husband can be together in a safe environment having your needs met. Be patient with yourself and with others. It will take time to establish a new routine.

Aging in Place ... well, as many of you know, my parents were living in a house with multiple sets of stairs and that all came quickly to an end in December when we hurriedly moved them into an assisted living facility with enhanced care. They were not open to changes over the years and because they waited until the last minute, were unable to really take part in the decisions regarding their home and possessions. My husband and I own a "ranch-style" home (one level) that we adapted to meet the needs of my son with disabilities (ramp from the garage so no steps, wheel-in shower, widened doorways, ceiling mounted lift equipment, etc). Besides the laundry currently in the basement (that was originally on the first level and moved to accommodate a jetted tub for my son) which we will eventually return to the first level, we can stay in this house as long as we're not addled. We'll need to hire people to take over jobs like the lawn and snow removal as we age, but that's a small price compared to the fees at an assisted living facility.

Unexpected Home Repairs ...Homes and other black holes. Home ownership is expensive. Period. Something always needs done. Right now we have a septic system that is failing and this really upsets me as it was completely replaced 12 years ago and should have lasted a lot longer than this. The company that installed the new system is no longer in business. No surprise there. We've had a supposedly reputable company give us an estimate. Still waiting on that. My husband and I sat down this morning listing everything that needs addressed to maintain this house if we plan to age in place. The list is daunting and will be pricey. After fixing the septic, we will need new drainage along the side yard (water came in on that side for the first time ever a few weeks ago), a new roof, new driveway, painting (if not new siding) and miscellaneous repairs. Even if we were to consider moving, these things would need to be done before selling.

March/April Goals ... My goal in March was to lose 1 pound a week. I will have to verify this tomorrow and get on a scale, but I'm fairly certain I did not meet this goal. Way to much apple strudel bread has passed my lips! But I am upping my movement/exercise. The knee is getting stronger (yes, therapy helps osteoarthritis) and I am doing more. I have set a goal of working outside when weather permits for one hour each day on whatever project we are involved in. Today it was beginning the yard clean-up from fallen branches and tree limbs. Little bites will get it all done. I am also committed to removing/decluttering/giving away 20-30% of my stuff out of the basement. I'm hoping my husband will take notice and join in with me, but it's wishful thinking I suspect. He hangs on to everything. April goal will be to continue with the exercise, basement and being lighter at the end of April than I am today.

    Carla-

Well today is a bright blue crisp day on the island!😁💖
You come from quite a military family! My dad was in Navy but got out on a disability. Actually he was home on leave during WWII, and found out his parents were divorcing. He put his hand thru a back kitchen door in frustration. So he got out and was paid like $5 every month for his injuries. My FIL was in the Army but he passed when my husband was 13 yrs old, so I never met him.

Michele: You’re doing well on the jewellery. Specsavers in the UK have a facility on their website where you can try on glasses. You take a screenshot of your face and then you pick the frames and it shows you what they look like. I’m not sure if you have the same firm in the states though
Katla: It’s Good that your daughter is taking so much care in organising things for you. It certainly takes a load off your mind when that happens.
Beth: It sounds like you’re thinking ahead on the edging in place. We could live on our ground floor if necessary. However I think the garden might get to be too much for us eventually, so we may have to pay someone to do that.

    🥳🎉 Cheers to those celebrating.

Beth near Buffalo-, thanks, I think so too! Hopefully she'll be more outdoorsy than me, I was kind of paranoid about outside, bugs etc. Of course it didn't help that no one really explained to me the way the world worked. When it rained, worms would appear all over the ground. No one explained that they came from the ground, so my perception was they fell from the sky. Silly me! I would check each corner of my room ceiling for spiders, every single night! Still do for the most part. The other morning a quite large spider had made it to the ceiling of our dining room. So I stared at it, and yelled for Lee to come down! So I instructed him to get the broom and shoo it to the middle of the ceiling, not scare it toward the bookshelves, where it would just hide. He came with the broom, but no wad of paper towel to kill it! I was like, are you crazy? You need to get your stuff together! He just sighes when I show my paranoid tendencies. If it wasn't for me he'd be shooing it, then trying to figure out where it went while he went to get a wad of tissue! 🙃😂😂

    Hi ladies!

I did my dumbbells, which is good because I skipped last time when I had a guest. Instead of taking Sunday off, I should do something tomorrow.

My mother is being difficult; taking her pills without me. She will get a cheap thrill of independence for a bit, then give it up.

If they are big or in the bedroom, I catch the spiders here, and put them outside. :)

If they are small or not in the bedroom, I usually just let them be.

However, if a mom lays eggs, I might get rid of those and if they've hatched and I've got a wall of teensy tiny spiders, I've given them a spray. I don't mind spiders but prefer to keep the numbers down.

There are a lot of spiders here.

Scorpions, on the other hand, disturb me.
