I ran my 16 mile long run today, but it was slow and hot. I was soaking wet by the time I finished. Looking at my pace, it just got slower and slower and slower as the temps rose. But I got it done! I purposefully ran in a flatter part of my neighborhood, doing a 2.2 mile loop, instead of the 7 mile loop I ran last week, partially because there was a lot more shade in this section, but also because it cut out all the big hills. This is the first of two 16, 18, and 20 mile runs.8
-
Great run @marisap2010 . Good choice on the route...shade and flatter are the way to go in the heat!
I did my Sunday Rest day mile walk on the treadmill after church this morning and before lunch. I know I am going to be working a lot next week, so not sure how much running I will get in, but I'm gonna try. It's hard to believe it's the last week in July already!4 -

I did not get up early this morning and it was already hot when I got out. I took it slow and tried to stay in the shade as much as possible. I only saw one water sprinkler and I stopped and just stood in it for a couple of minutes. It definitely helped. I ran 9.4 miles. I didn't have 10 in me, but I figured that 15K would do.

I slept for 12 hours last night. It was glorious. We landed at 6am yesterday and I knew if I slept then the jetlag would get the better of me. I was out the instant my head hit the pillow and felt so much better today.
Because I slept in, I did my run on the treadmill this afternoon. For this one I ran a trail in Costa Rica. I enjoy getting to visit some new locations on these guides runs.
Back to work tomorrow. 😭
Great job getting long runs done in the heat @marisap2010 and @kgirlhart. It's tough but you got it done!!2 -
Great long run in the heat @kgirlhart
@martaindale Great running and glad you got 12 hours sleep. I'm lucky to get 7.

I never made it here this weekend but have gotten caught up on liking posts and looking at some wonderful pictures. On Saturday I ran 5 miles and then met a friend at 7:00 am and walked almost 4 miles during our Fun Fest Hot Air Balloon festival. I wanted to run at least 7 miles but I just couldn't make myself get up any earlier on a Saturday morning!
Yesterday, I rode 31 miles on my bike on the Creeper Trail and this morning I got out for a 5 mile run before work. As I was driving to the trail with my bike I saw a black bear right below my house. He was crossing the road that is on my regular running route. He looks like he is fairly young.4 -
@martaindale I am jealous of your 12 hour sleep (and your Hawaii vacation). Glad you had a good time doing both 😊
Cool bear @Teresa502! And that is a lot of work both riding and running back to back! 💪
Very nice running @marisap2010 and @kgirlhart on your long runs in the heat 🥵
I am a wimp comparatively. Just did 6 treadmill miles tonight after work.
4 -
Nice workouts @Teresa502 . The bear does look fairly young. You're going to have to be extra careful on your predawn runs on that road. I think my niece's family went to Fun Fest. You probably past each other at some point.
Nice treadmill run after work @Scott6255 .
I also did a treadmill run after work tonight. My plan called for a long interval run. I decided to go for it, but did modify it a little because I felt I was a little tight on time. The plan called for 5 min Zone 1, 5 min Zone 2, 5x(3 min Zone 4/2 min Zone 1) 5 min Zone 1. I called my warm up and cool down walks as the beginning and ending Zone 1 parts of the run. Then I ran/walked 4/1/5x(1.5/1.5/2) minutes at 4.5/3.8/5x(6.0/5.5/3.8) mph. I ended the run with 39 second at 6.5 mph to make it to 2.50 miles. It turned out to be an average pace of 12:16 min/mile, so not horrible considering there were 11 minutes of walking in that time. My warm up and cool down walks totaled 0.70 mile, so that brings my total for the month up to 45.6 miles.3 -

Today was my rest day so I did an hour of yoga (cross-training) and then ran a mile for my streak.
@Teresa502 Cute bear, but I wouldn't want to run into him.
3 -
We had some strong thunderstorms and rain in the early morning hours but they had passed through by 5:00 am so I was able to get out for my run. Met a friend and we ran 5 miles which brings my monthly total to 70.96 and for the first time in a long time I met my monthly goal! I guess since I kept lowering it, I finally got there!
@kgirlhart – I wish I was as disciplined about doing yoga as you. I like doing it while I’m doing it but just getting to that point…
@quilteryoyo – great interval run!
@Scott6255 – you are far from being a wimp – six miles on a treadmill takes more perseverance than I have!
4 -
@Scott6255 I would agree that you are definitely not a wimp!
@Teresa502 Oh, wow! I have never seen a bear in the wild outside of Yellowstone/Tetons. I can’t imagine just running into one near my house.
@quilteryoyo Good job on your intervals. That’s a good pace when you consider the walking is all averaged in!!2 -

Logging 2 runs. Yesterday I did my run on the treadmill after work (@scott6255 - see, you’re not a wimp because I’m not a wimp!). This one took me to the Azores, an archipelago I had never heard of before yesterday, located off the coast of Portugal. The run was more of a workout than I was expecting as there were quite a few hills. I know myself and I would have a hard time making myself do hills on a treadmill if I were doing a manual run. These guided workouts are rarely super flat, so the variation in incline keeps me honest and gives some much needed variety since I only get out to the hill country once every month or 2. I have decided to keep the ifit subscription through the summer then cancel it for the 8 months or so where I am unlikely to use the treadmill.
This morning I got up early and did my first run outside in Houston in almost 2 weeks. OMG, heat and humidity! It hit me like a ton of bricks this morning. Took it slow, found some sprinklers and shade but it was still hard to keep my HR from creeping up into the 160’s. I will hydrate like crazy today and make sure to foam roll in preparation for a few more outside runs this week.
5 -
Nobody here is a wimp! C'mon, you talk about bears and snakes and treadmills nonchalantly, wimps don't do that! Lol!
@martaindale the Azores have some pretty impressive trail races... I saw a documentary on the Spanish Salomon team running the Golden Trail Series finals there last year and it was hardcore!
Really glad I wasn't due to run today, we have this nasty hot wind phenomenon here atm, it never went under 30C (86f I think) at all last night. Praying it goes down in time for tomorrow's 11km. Even more so as there are new fires breaking out every day. At this rate there'll be nowhere left to run :-(5 -
Hi All,
Hurray I met my goal:
I did not eat well this month, so next month, I will need to set a goal to lose weight, anything!
I will be on a small island and at a cottage for part of next month, so I may set a goal for a certain number of sets of body weight exercises (squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, vee-sits etc), rather than kms.5 -
7.6 treadmill miles this evening.

It was hot as usual this morning, but I had a nice run. I got up and got going so I had time for 6.25 miles. I figured I might as well run 10K.
4 -
Nice cross training day @kgirlhart .
Great running @Teresa502 . Congratulations on meeting your monthly goal. Your comment about keeping lowering it made me laugh. I think I need to follow that method in order to meet mine too.
@martaindale Your treadmill running make me really wish I had used my free subscription when I first go my treadmill. I really do like the automatic changing of the incline feature. You are doing fantastic. And running outside today. I bet it was hard in those conditions.eleanorhawkins wrote: »Nobody here is a wimp! I hope the winds die down and the fires are gotten under control quickly.
Congratulations at meeting your goal @Mau_Hutch ! Setting a workout goal is a great idea if you know that you won't be running. A cottage on a small island sounds lovely.
Great run @kgirlhart !
I did a 35 min Foundation Run on the treadmill after work today. The goal was to keep my HR under 143. I did a 4/1 min run/walk. The walks were 3.8 mph. The runs were 4.2, 4.5, 4.6, 3 x 4.7, 4.2 mph. After the "warm up," I kept increasing the pace until I found one that increased my HR to close my goal. I wound up running 2.60 miles in 35:39 m:s for a 13:43 min/mile pace. A little slow, but not horrible for a Foundation Run. My average HR was 126 bpm. The max was 142 bpm. I also walked 0.7 miles total for warm up and cool down. That brought my total for the month to 48.9/70 mile goal. But I did reach my 400th mile for the year today!

Whoever is in charge of our weather decided to turn the 'hairdryer in your face' setting off today, and cranked up the humidity instead. It was at 81% humidity when I set out at 7.30 this morning for my run. Spotify made me laugh by giving me 'Sucker for Pain' as the first song it played at random.
Because we didn't sleep much last night (ceiling fan just moved the hot air around all night) I wasn't really awake and didn't think to check the wildfire situation, so I spent most of my run wondering if I was going to round a corner and find a wall of flames or something. It was cloudy/misty/smoky so I could hear the helicopters, but couldn't see them, and I could smell smoke faintly so I was concentrating on seeing if the smell was getting stronger or if it looked like thicker smoke ahead (again, it was hard to tell if what I could see was cloud or mist or smoke).
That worry clearly affected my pace, although I was doing run/walk intervals up the hills I registered my second fastest time on the mile-long uphill slog. When I rounded the bend at the top of that I could see a black edge a hundred or so metres down the other side of the hill where they obviously managed to stop the fire, phew!
All in all, today's 11km run felt like I was trying to climb out of a vat of thick, lukewarm soup, but I got it done. Roll on autumn.

That weather sounds awful @eleanorhawkins ! I'm glad you didn't run into a wall of fire! Great job on the pace.0

Found a few sprinklers this morning, which were much needed and appreciated. My running neighbor in the hill country told me about a running group that meets at 7am on Saturdays. I'm definitely going to check it out the next weekend I am out there. So many of the groups around here just don't fit with my schedule but 7am on a Saturday is basically when I like to get out and it will be a great way to meet some other folks out there.5 -
94.4 month to date so will most likely hit 100. Altho I don't want to go back to page one and see what I started with . I think speed work. But like most of you mother nature has just been grueling here in Austin this month. It's not so much that it's almost 80 and humid and high dew point even before sun up but just that EVERY day is so hot and it seems to drain it right out of me with no end in sight.
I was really excited to get some pretty new shoes today. Trying out a new style because of course the ones I liked last year were discontinued. Anyway, I knew they were heavier and I didn't like the laces when I put them on last night. But they sure were pretty - deep pink! However I know as soon as I took my first steps today they were going back. Just not comfortable for my feet or my knees or hips. Probably not a good drop or shape. But you never know until you try right? So a little down about that.
I have seen armadillos and skunks and deer on my runs along with egrets and herons overhead but I sure do miss riding in the evenings in the hay fields and seeing all the cool hawks and other wildlife there.
Excuse the bad mood - all minor stuff of course!7 -
Thanks for the comments on my son, he's doing Ok.
@kirlhart - sorry to hear about your Mum and daughter.
@eleanorhawkins - the fires are awful and it takes a long time for the ground to recover.

@quilteryoyo thx for the mention. Yes looking forward to that island with one cottage on it. My dog is so funny there. If I say 'let's go for a walk' he bounce up and down and then happily follow me around its perimeter (of about 300m!) , thrilled that he doesn't have to be leashed. It is in the Kawartha highlands in Ontario. And congrats on that TM run. When I used to run on TM a lot training for 10ks and halfs, my happy place was HR143 @ 10kph. After I had done a bunch of interval training and race pace training, it felt like I could continue at that HR forever (never tried it for a whole marathon tho)
Is there a simple way to mention ppl that I am missing. (Copy their name, add and @ in front?)
I gained weight this month, and that is the last thing I needed. Looking to buckle down and contain my eating better this month, despite being on vaca. (If I don't pack it, we won't eat it!)
4 -
Nice running and the sprinklers sound fun and refreshing @martaindale . The new group sounds like a great fit. I hope you make some new running friends.
@SummerSkier So sorry the new shoes didn't work out for you. You are doing great to get in 100 miles for this hot July Texas month! Hopefully you'll get back out to the hayfields soon.
@Mari33a Glad your son is doing okay. You are doing great with your running...almost to goal.
That island sounds like so much fun @Mau_Hutch . I'm sure your dog does enjoy that. And, if there is nothing on the island but one cabin then, yes, not packing it means you won't eat it. Yes, the best way to mention people is to use the @ sign before their user name.
I did get in my mile on the treadmill last night, but it was after 9pm before I had the chance to get it in, so I didn't even open up the laptop afterwards. Today my mom, neighbor William, and I are going to Abingdon VA to the Highlands Festival and maybe see a show at Barter Theater to celebrate all of our birthdays...William's was last week, mine is next week, and mom's in on the 15th. So, while we will be walking a lot, it will be slow. I'll still need to get something in after we get home. It depends on the timeframe as to whether I walk or run, as I have to be at work at 7:30 tomorrow morning.6 -

Uneventful easy miles in the dark this morning. Well, mostly uneventful. An opossum and I scared the crap out of each other. It was dark and it was sitting beside the sidewalk so I didn't see it and I guess it didn't hear me coming. As I passed, it freaked out and ran. The sudden movement made me jump and we were both much more awake after that.7 -
@martaindale omg too funny. I've never seen an opossum0
-
Ha, that's a great way to get your heart rate going @martaindale 😁 (did it show up in your HR monitor)?
@quilteryoyo your trip sounds fun. Hope you all have a good birthday celebration!
My brother came in town for the weekend, so we ran together this morning. He lives in Georgia, and he said it was so much hotter here than there (and it was one of our cool mornings at 82F). But we did 10 miles, and it wasn't so bad.

I slept so soundly last night. Didn't wake up until 3:03 am when a heavy downpour of rain was hitting the roof. I rolled over and went back to sleep until the alarm went off at 4:00 am., looked at the weather map and it said rain would be stopping in 25 minutes so I headed to the town where I work and ran 7 miles. It only rained on me for a few seconds on mile 5 and it felt wonderful. Before I started my run my Garmin watch told me that my recovery time would be delayed because of my night of poor sleep....huh? I thought it was a great night of sleep!
@quilteryoyo - hope you had a great time today. I stopped at the arts and crafts on Barter Green on Sunday after my bike ride. I was disappointed in the number of vendors - not what it used to be. Did you already have tickets to the Barter Theatre or where you able to get them at the window? They are usually sold out this time of year.
@Scott6255 - hope you enjoy your brother's visit!
@Mau_Hutch - I also think your island getaway sounds heavenly! Send us some pictures!
@martaindale - that silly opossum!
Great running everyone!3 -
-
@eleanorhawkins I hate to hear that the fires are still going. I hope they are able to contain them soon. I know that must be scary having to worry if they will be close to you.
@quilteryoyo Great job with your runs! I hope you enjoyed your day at the festival.
@Mau_Hutch Enjoy your island getaway!
@martaindale I think an opossum would have scared me too!
Monday was a rest day following my long run Sunday.
Tuesday's run was a Fast Finish - 5 min Z1, 35 min Z2, 12 min Z3. It was 90 degrees and sooo humid, so I was slower than I wanted and only got 3.88 miles.
Yesterday was a Foundation Run - 5 min Z1, 35 min Z2, 5 min Z2. Again, I waited until after work so it was hot, and I got in 3.31 miles.
I worked late today and decided I really want to have the energy to get up in the morning to do my hill repeats before work, so I decided to just walk tonight. 1.6 miles to wind down after a long day.
I did pass 100 miles for the month! I'm at 105.19. I should get about 15 more before the end of the month.3
