I forgot to post last night. I ran 6 miles yesterday. It was hot as usual, but it was a good run. Yesterday I got up and got going better. I was able to run through the sprinklers. Today I just didn't want to get up so I missed the sprinklers, but I still had time for 5 miles.
@martaindale Possums are so creepy looking. We are having trouble with a possum right now. He keeps going under our house. We've ordered a trap and are going to catch him and move him somewhere else. The good news is that possums don't carry rabies. But I still don't want one living under my house.
@Mari33a I'm glad your son is doing better.
@eleanorhawkins I hope they get the fires contained soon.

Thanks everyone, they seem to have all the closest fires under control right now, but there are new ones every couple of days. There's a lot of talk about them being due to the current heat and lack of rain this last year, there's also a lot of shouting about the authorities not doing enough work in the winter to clear undergrowth and stuff, but I still suspect there is a pyromaniac behind this current streak... it's never been this bad before and even if they manage to catch a lot of them quickly and get them put out before they spread much, it still isn't normal for my municipality alone to be having a new fire start every 2 or 3 days.
This is a cutback week, so I just ran up to the village on the mountain and back without adding extra loops and hills as I have been doing recently. I was beating myself up a bit towards the end because I didn't sleep much, it was hot and I was struggling, especially around mile 8. Then it dawned on me that a lot of my trouble was that I was focusing on it being 'just 10 miles' and that should be easy and I remembered that 4 years ago I had just signed up for my first HM and 10 miles was the terrifyingly long longest run on the training plan I had found myself, and everyone kept telling me "if you can run 10 miles, you can run a half". That made me remember that thing about what is hard today will be your warmup one day and all that stuff, and stop beating myself up. Then when I got home Strava cheered me up no end by telling me I'd got a PR on the aptly-named Hell Hill and another one on another hill segment on that route. What doesn't kill you definitely makes you stronger.
But please everyone, next year don't let me sign up for long autumn races LOL. These next 6 weeks are going to be grim. Especially the day in early or mid September when I get to do today's loop twice!
We're going away for the weekend so I probably won't get back online until Monday evening. I can't remember what my goal was for this month, but I'm at 168.5km which makes it my highest mileage month ever, and I should get another 5k in on Sunday. Roll on massage day on Tuesday!

13.2 miles this morning. Another nice run with the bro. But today felt so much hotter than what my phone said 84F. Maybe it's because I hadn't run a HM since early June. But real marathon training starts a week from tomorrow, so better get used to it. But this caps the most miles I have ever ran in one month (my last marathon training I peaked at only 140 miles). So hopefully I will be better prepared this time.

@martaindale I totally understand that feeling. The most scared I have ever been in my life was an encounter with a white pig, in the dark, when I was in HS. I had gone out to the car to get something I needed, turned around and saw something white standing there, I was so scared I couldn't move or scream. Apparently, the pig was the same way because after we stared at each other for a couple of seconds and then registering what the other was, we both let out screams at the same time and ran. LOL
Nice runs with your brother @Scott6255 .
@Teresa502 I feel the same way about Garmin and my sleep some days. It will say I had poor sleep when I felt like it was okay. Some nights it says I had no REM, but know that I had dreamed, so I'm not sure what it uses to decide all of those things. I am kind of keeping track, for comparison purposes. It usually has my actual sleep times pretty spot on. I'm glad you were able to get your run in around the rain. We got caught in a downpour when we first got to Abingdon, but then it stopped.
Nice running @marisap2010 .
Great running @kgirlhart . I agree with you...I don't want anything living under my house.
Great running @eleanorhawkins . I don't think I have reached the point that what I thought I couldn't do before is now easy. Well, one mile is. Does that count? I really do look forward to the day when 5 miles is easy for me. I think that may be far in the future. At least I don't think it is impossible. You are an inspiration. I hope you enjoy your weekend away.
We did have a fun day in Abingdon VA on Thursday. We did get rained on when we first got there, but at least we had 2 umbrellas between the three of us. We were a little bit disappointed in the venders that were there too @Teresa502 . And parking was really hard to find. We didn't have time to check out any of the other things they had going on in different parts of town because we did drop in and get tickets for the 2:00 pm showing of "9 to 5." We had BBQ at one of the local restaurants and then went to the musical. It was so good and funny. Only thing is, it was a little bit more risque than we were expecting. For the first time in a long time, it was probably good that mom doesn't hear well and missed a lot of the curse words. She was able to follow the story line though and enjoyed the show. It was after 7 before I got home and was able to get my treadmill walk done.
Yesterday, I worked until 2, had to do a bit of shopping, and then mowed mom's lawn when I got home, so got in another mile walk on the treadmill late.
I have yet to get myself going today, so not sure what I will do. Probably a short run. Not even going to be close to my goal, but.....it's still better than zero.

Long run Saturday! I woke up early to make sure I got started close to sunrise and I’m glad I did. It was even a bit warmer than normal. Managed a decent average pace (11:34/mile) without it being too painful though my HR did drift up as the run went along. My only miles that crept up over 12 mins were when I stopped at the water fountains to put water over my head. That really is a lifesaver when there are no sprinklers going. Idk why but no one seems to water on Saturday mornings. Saw 3 rabbits on the trail and passed the same old man out for a walk 4 times.
Going to try a new restaurant tonight with a friend of mine. Seafood place. I love seafood but my husband is a vegetarian and seafood places are worse than steakhouses for vegetarian options, so I rarely go. I’m excited to see my friend and for the delicious food.
Also my neighbor from the hill country went to that running group this morning and I saw her run on strava. They did a 5k at a pace barely over 9 min/mile. That pace is way faster than I would be able to hold in this heat, even for just 3 miles. And I do my long run on Saturday so I would still need to do another several miles afterwards so I don’t want to go too fast and burn out. IDK. These guys might be too fast for me. Story of my life with running clubs. I’ll give it a chance though. I just don’t want to get left behind to chase the group. I guess we’ll see in a few weeks. I have a weekend in Aug that I will probably head out there.

Maybe your neighbor is one of the leaders of the pack and there are other slower paced runners in the group who aren't on Strava. Good work on your long run and hope the new restaurant is fabulous!

@martaindale Nice running. My HR always drifts up towards the end of a run too, even if the pace is the same, or slower. Enjoy your visit with your friend and the seafood. I agree with @Teresa502 about the group. I'm glad that didn't scare you off and you are going to give it a try. Thanks for setting up the August Challenge.
I did a treadmill Foundation Run today. I knew this morning that I wasn't going to feel like a long run, unless things changed. They didn't. My legs just didn't want to work today. I did run 2.30 miles at an average 13:59 pace - slower than a snail, but hey, that's the way I roll. My average HR was 125 with a max of 137, so not bad. I also walked 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down. That makes my monthly total to date 54.70/70 mile goal.

This morning I went to the gym for my RIPPED class and then came home to run both last night's run and today's run. Yesterday should have been hill repeats, and today was a recovery run, so total I ran 4.6 miles.
I bought my marathon shoes today. Dick's Sporting Goods was having a sale, and I had a coupon, so I got Brooks Ghost 14 for $40 off. I won't wear them until a few weeks before the race. I also got a new Sprints hat in the mail today, and new Goodr glasses in the mail yesterday. I probably should stop shopping for a bit. Shoe and hat porn below.

Hello everyone... I kind of dropped off the face of the earth here but I have been running some and have read through with appropriate likes and hugs. It has been hot here like everywhere it seems. We aren't used to the humidity and typically have @eleanorhawkins 'hot hairdryer your face' winds with low humidity and this year we are getting monsoon moisture (but no real rain to speak of) instead. I don't know how you all in the south deal with the humidity but I guess it is just something else you have to get used too. It does make me wish I had access to a treadmill though. I suspect in late August or September I will be complaining of the hot, dry winds and wishing for (a little) more humidity.
@polskagirl01 - glad you got to meet another Vizsla. Even though they tend to be pretty slim they can get heavy like any dog if they don't get enough regular exercise. They are also susceptible to thyroid issues. Hobbes has a friend at doggy daycare appropriately named Chubbs 😁 She is definitely the heaviest Vizsla I have met but she doesn't get exercised much at all because of the owners schedules.
@Mau_Hutch - that island getaway sounds awesome! I had to look up where it was and wow! gorgeous area!
@martaindale - we have lots of possums here and they are protected - you can trap them but not kill or otherwise harm them. They are actually very good for the environment and eat a lot of pests like slugs and snails (along with fruit off the trees). When I worked at the baby zoo in college we had a pair of orphaned babies and they were actually a lot of fun.
@Scott6255 - so happy you got to run with your brother! Are you two doing any races together this year?
@eleanorhawkins - I hope the fires are not being set intentionally. Some of our big ones have been and they seem to be able to track down the arsonists. Almost worse though are the ones that are set from the power companies not maintaining the cables properly and then they arc in the wind and start a fire... Be super careful running when it is so smokey. I have been reading here about the particulate from the ash that remains in the air and can be carried quite a distance. Makes me shudder that I used to go out a run even when you could see the ash falling like snow... We aren't that close to where many of the fires are/were but the ash would get picked up and carried all the way to the ocean.
@martaindale - I hope the run group works out. I have often thought I would like to find one here but most are way faster than I can do and way younger than me so we don't even have much in common. Thanks for setting up August!
Yesterday I headed out for a walk with Hobbes the Vizsla and planned to go back out after I dropped him at home. It was just too hot so I didn't go... Today I planned to go out early but got up late even after going to bed early and sleeping forever... Guess I was tired. So that meant I got out later than planned and of course it was already hot and very humid for us. I even got sprinkled on at one point. Did my 60/30 intervals and tried to keep an even slow pace. Still had to stop a few times and eventually my legs just said enough and I walked home. That's it for me for July. Hit my goal but not my stretch goal. If I had run in San Francisco it would have been closer to 100miles... Maybe August!
The Run the World group is still slogging through the warm Pacific waters but getting closer to California every day. We're making great progress!

Love the shoe and hat porn @marisap2010 . Great running and sticking to the plan.
You did great this month @shanaber !2 -
@marisap2010 - that hat is so fun! I am always on the hunt for cute running hats. Love the Brooks too - wish I could wear Brooks, they have such cute styles but they are just too narrow for me.
1 -
@marisap2010 I just ordered that same pair of shoes!2
-
I got out for a 6 mile run this morning to finish the month at 84 miles (my goal was 70 so I guess I met my stretch goal!). It started raining on my 1.60 mile cool down walk but felt wonderful! About an hour later we just had a thunderstorm roll through so my timing was good for getting it done today. Some friends and I are going to a backpacking class this afternoon to learn some tips for filtering water, hanging a food bag so that the bears don't get it, etc.Tired out my new Asics this morning. I've had them in reserve since March when Asics sent me a birthday coupon. I really like the feel of them and will definitely keep them in my rotation.@marisap2010 - I love, love, love the hat and the shoes!!

Today's long run was a cutback of 10 miles. It was overcast and foggy when I started, low 70s temps, and by the time I finished, it was sunny with a slight breeze. I felt really good for the entire run. I ended up running it 12 minutes faster than when I ran 10 miles on the same route five weeks ago, all while staying in Z2!
My friend, who was supposed to run Wineglass with me in October, told me last night she probably is going to drop out of the race. Her family took a month long road trip, and she ended up not running at all while they were gone. She doesn't see building up to where she needs to be over the next 8 weeks to be successful. She said to give her a couple of weeks to feel out her runs, but I'm pretty certain she won't make it, which is disappointing.
I ended July with 119.83 miles. Part of me wants to jog up the street a few houses and back to make it an even 120, haha.6 -
Great running in July everyone, despite the heat and other challenges.
@Scott6255 sounds like you are in a great position heading into marathon training with that many miles a month already.
Great job on your total @marisap2010. I'd be tempted to get the 120 too, but probably not enough to go back out there. I love the shoes and the hat. I'm not much of a hat wearer but my running group of women affectionally, and ironically for most of us, call ourselves the Cheetahs, so I love a cheetah themed print. I feel like I just bought new Ghosts, but it might be time again so I should look.
And @marisap2010 I'm sorry your friend may be backing out of Wineglass. I was just talking Wineglass with friends during our long run yesterday. One is doing the full and hoping for a PR and maybe BQ. I ran the half a few years ago and it was quite memorable - that was the race where I fell before crossing the start line and had bloody knees and bruised ribs. But also an incredible adrenaline rush from that craziness that carried me through to a PR (at the time). It's a beautiful course from the little I can remember!
@teresa502 nice shoes as well. Congrats on exceeding your goal for the month. Hope you enjoy your backpacking class! That sounds really valuable.
Good to see you check in @shanaber. Nice job making your goal.
You are doing great @quilteryoyo. Not your goal maybe but you kept going and you're right it's way better than nothing. You've kept up such a great streak with your walking and running.

I'm not sure that I set a goal this month. I don't think I did, but 100 has been my default in my spreadsheet for a couple of years. So I didn't make that, but I did better than the past 5 months! And the highest walk + run miles this year. My girl Stella and I have been putting in some extra walks as our coping mechanism.
Saturday was my longest long run since March also. Incrementally so, but still. With everything going on I'll take all of this as a win for July. See you all in August!

Something I read and thought I would post. Native Tennessean, but the quote was what I liked.
https://fox17.com/news/local/columbia-native-tn-guardsmen-to-compete-against-national-guards-best-soldiers-officers
“It reminds me that I must pay rent on my fitness everyday and that my attitude and effort are the two main things I can control,” said Kleinfelder.8 -
@Teresa502 Nice shoes!
@katharmonic I don't wear hats on all runs, but I usually will on a longer run because I find it will wick most of the sweat away instead of it pouring down my face.
And ouch! at falling before the start of Wineglass half. That is awesome that you were able to PR despite that. Tell you friend I said good luck on the full. I'm hoping for a PR, but I am nowhere near fast enough for a BQ.
@AlphaHowls Amazing job once again on your miles! I really like that quote.2 -
@AlphaHowls - thanks for sharing that quote. Competing in 30 stress induced exercises sounds stressful in itself!2

@marisap2010 Sorry to hear your friend may be backing out of wineglass. You're doing great getting yourself prepped.0
-
Awesome run this morning @Teresa502 . Love the new shoes. Congrats on meeting your stretch goal! I hope you enjoy the backpacking class.
@marisap2010 Great improvement in your 10 mile time! I love it. Sorry your friend probably won't join you in your race. I know that is disappointing. I hear you on the short jog. LOL When I think I am going to be close, I check my mileage before I go out for the last session of the month to see what I "need" to do. LOL
Thanks a lot @katharmonic ! You did great this month also!
Crazy amount of miles once again @AlphaHowls . Love that quote.
Sounds like a lovely run @martaindale . You had a great total for the month, even if you didn't meet your goal.
I did a 1.1 mile walk on the treadmill after church and before heading out for my great niece's birthday party. That brought my total for July to 59.0 miles (Don't look back to my previous post and add. Apparently, I posted the wrong number last night.) I was actually closer than I thought I would be. Eleven miles short of goal isn't horrible. Had I not had extra things thrown into a few of my days, preventing a run, I would have made it. I'm okay with 59. See you in August. I'll try to figure up my goal tomorrow morning.

I didn't post yesterday, but I did run a mile for the streak. Today I didn't get up as early as I needed to so I just ran 8 miles. It's just been so hot. But I did finish out the month with 116 miles so I did reach my goal.
Yesterday I went to see my mom. Her insurance wouldn't approve the rehab hospital so she had to go to a skilled nursing facility with rehab. Luckily my sister found one on the list that allows 24/7 visitors and she has been able to stay with her. Hopefully after a week they will move her to a rehab hospital or even to my sister's house with home health coming for rehab. She does seem to be doing well. It has just been really stressful and she is just really disappointed that she broke her hip.
Today's run was ok. It was just hot and since I knew I would hit my goal I cut it short. I guess 8 miles is long enough to be a "long run". 😊 Hopefully next month won't be as stressful as this month was. Thanks for setting us up @Martindale. See you all over in the August thread.
5 -
@kgirlhart Sorry to hear your mom had to settle for a skilled nursing facility. It is good your sister is available to be with her regularly. BTW, 8 miles definitely counts as a long run. I think a long run is largely decided by how it stacks up relative to what you do during the week.2
-
@kgirlhart I'm glad your mom seems to be doing okay and I hate it when I hear that insurance is making decisions that doctor's should be making. Glad you found a facility that allows someone to stay with her all the time. That has to make it a little bit better on her and you, even though I know it is hard on your sister. You know you are a long distance running when you use the work "just" to describe an 8 mile run! You are doing great.

@AlphaHowls - great running once again! How are you coming on the run around the earth miles? I will be adding that quote to my 'quote collection'. I think it is awesome!
@marisap2010 - I hope your friend decides to go to Wineglass even if just to cheer you on!I didn't post yesterday, but I did run a mile for the streak. Today I didn't get up as early as I needed to so I just ran 8 miles. It's just been so hot. But I did finish out the month with 116 miles so I did reach my goal.
I hate our medical system that would deny your mom proper rehab for her hip. They wonder why people often don't thrive after injuries like that when they are otherwise healthy and should. Thankfully she has you all to be there for her and help her navigate and get taken care of properly.
On to August!
