This thread has been a game changer for me! I so appreciate every single one of you!
*August goals: 18-20 days AF with no more than 2 drinks in one night
*Stop and think before opening a drink to prevent pouring alcohol down the drain-save some money!
Good luck everyone!
8/1-8/7: 5 AF out of 7
8/8: AF
Days until vacation: 5
My mom and I have been known to imbibe a bit much on vacations but I’m just not sure my heart is in it this year. I really don’t want to deal with the hangover. We’ll see.
8/9: AF Worked 14 hours-no time to drink! A few months ago I would have stayed up late drinking, then woke up at the last minute for work and felt like garbage all day. Hopefully those days are behind me!
8/10 AF
Well, vacation has been canceled. I was supposed to go with my mom and she’s too stressed out about selling her house/buying a condo. Which is very stressful and there was a chance this could happen. I’m really disappointed and was really looking forward to getting away to the beach/up north where everything is just….slower and more quiet. However, I’m still taking the time off and telling my work I will not be able to be reached. I will make the best of it, I have access to a lovely pool and I plan to try out some new recipes!
8/11 AF Well, I’m free! I’m on call Saturday night but I don’t care, that’s completely different than the regular job I do. Otherwise I’m free until the 22nd! Might just make some mock tails!
8/12: A 1- By the pool, staycation has officially begun!4 -
@Will_Run_for_Food wonderful to have you joining us again.
Moderation or abstaining, it is all LESS and it all works.
This group of supporters are TOP NOTCH with their honesty and compassion.
Keep posting!4 -
With all the discussion of elderly parents in the past month or so it entered our home yesterday as my husbands Father died.
87 Y/O and quietly drifted away in his sleep, as we all hope to pass.
I was very worried about my husband. As you all know he has a major drinking problem.
I expected to come home from work yesterday and find him out of control intoxicated. Thank goodness he wasn't, not even a little.
Small steps.....small steps 🤞
August accountability for me-

12 AF
Have a super weekend

@MissMay so sorry to hear about your father in law! But what a peaceful way to go! Will be thinking about you, with the impending move and your hubby’s grief.
@lmlmrn will NJ and PA postcards work? I can get you both!
@joans1976 Sorry to hear your weekend away got cancelled. Enjoy your staycation by your lovely pool!
@tmbg1 you’re racking up more AF days than I am! Great job moderating!
@rockinrobyn I feel your pain! In that situation, I just eat what I normally do, even if it’s at a restaurant (bacon and eggs for breakfast, salad topped with grilled chicken for lunch, steak and veggies for dinner for example), and limit myself to one glass at lunch and one at dinner. Or better yet, just have iced tea for lunch.
There is a celebratory mood when you hang out with old friend and my “micro-sips” go out the window with certain friends if I’m not really careful! Feeling tipsy feels good but it’s a very fleeting thing, and then all of a sudden we slide into wasted. I can’t handle the hangover the next day like I could in my 20’s, so my recommendation is just not even try to keep up with friends who drink way more than you.5 -
Only had one AF day this week so far. Last night I had a beer at the pool, but then had 1.5 glasses of wine at home, which was completely pointless. I wish I didn’t have them. Oh and also, I “had” to eat crackers and hummus to “go” with my wine. Why on earth? Shocker, my weight is way up this morning.
Big insight-So I actually am a daily drinker with the occasional AF day thrown in. I would feel a lot better about that IF I could just keep it to one glass of wine. But I struggle with the temptation to grab another half glass- which usually turns into two, which messes with my sleep, and I wake up looking haggard. It all ties Into those last few pounds I’m trying to lose, having as much alcohol as I do is derailing that goal. My inner 3 year old having a tantrum does not want to be denied anything! How do you all stay disciplined in those moments of weakness, when willpower just freaking fails and you say “F it” to your plan?
PS. Clearly I need to go through those resources at the top of this thread again! But I’m the meantime, ugh!7 -
Hey Team! July was my first full month and was a great win for me.
Goal: No more than 3A days weekly (16 - 19 AF days monthly); Max 7 drinks weekly
8/8 M - Drinks (1) - Plan was AF
8/9 Tu - AF
8/10 W - Drinks (2) - Plan was AF
8/11 Th - Drinks (1) - Company here until Tuesday. So nice to have our friends here for a few days!
8/12 F - Drinks (3) - Company here. We cooked a seafood boil and had good wine with dinner. I'm not sticking to goal this week but I'm keeping it reasonable!6 -
@Womona I too get that IDGAF feeling. I too wish I knew how to overcome it. Here are my observations about when it descends on me: (1) It is more likely to happen when my willpower has been used up on other things. So theoretically, I could limit the probability of IDGAF onset if I can manage my willpower well, i.e. don't undertake anything that's too hard or too much a stretch from my normal pattern. (2) It is more likely to happen when my prefrontal cortex is impaired by a drink or two. Oh, that's when I have the off-budget snacks, too.
No helpful answers, but you are not alone in that boat.@Womona yes PA and NJ Will be great. I am on the road until Sunday but then I will get you the address thank you
Need Texas?4 -
I am Dawn. I joined this thread in November of 2018
My usual goal: 16-20 AF per month.
I had 19AF days for July.
Diary style
Company here for 8 days:
Saturday August 6th - Drinks and threw up! (We both did)
Sunday August 7th - Drinks, half-sized, plus wine (!!) with dinner.
Monday August 8th - Pre dinner cocktail after work, and (very good) wine with dinner. Not really planning any AF days. I am the cocktail maker, my friend is a chef. Since we both threw up the first day I have been making delicious cocktails with one total ounce split between us. I have been making us mocktails and NA iced coffees also.
Tuesday August 9th - Drinks. Kept them reasonable, but drinks nevertheless. I suppose that I am taking a pass on this week, but I am okay with that.
Wednesday August 10th - Drinks
Thursday August 11th - Drinks
Friday August 12th - Drinks - Sunday will be AF, and as many AF days as I can string together after that. It might be hard after drinking every day! So wonderful having my old friend here! We haven't been overdoing it after both puking the first night : - )
Rolling total: 4AF days out of 12 days5 -
AF:days 1,3,5,7,9,12
A days: 2,4,6,8,10,11
12 days done this month, of those half are AF.
I have a party tomorrow so I will try to not drink another day in a row. I feel so MEH and want to drink today just to get that energy boost (and escape life a bit). I'll go distract myself instead.
Thank goodness I have extra-strength melatonin gummies to get me to bed tonight.

I know a long no-alcohol abstinence, anywhere from 1-3 months is actually easier than moderating for me (or mis-moderating as I am doing, who am I kidding). I am kinda sorta, well definitely having more than 7 drinks a week still so I am not honestly moderating I tell myself.
I know the abstinence is easier because I've done it twice. Usually days 2-5 for me I am edgy and grumpy and sleepless then I am just fine. I get over that hump and then I feel really quite good.
If anyone wants to abstain and still chat with us, please do. You might inspire some of us to just do that for awhile. I could use it and I could also use the flatter tummy to go along with that.6 -

August accountability: 4 days AF
Alcohol: 9 days (19 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.
8/1 - AF
8/2 - 2 wine
8/3 - 3 wine
8/4 - 1 beer; Passed on the open 1.5 bottles of wine available to me during dinner and drank sparkling water instead. The old me would have said you blew the day and can’t count it as AF so go ahead and have wine with dinner. But I decided to just be accountable and move on.
8/5 - 3 wine
8/6 - 1 wine
8/7 - 2 wine; Great late lunch out with friends where I remained AF followed by a dinner of just wine & cheese with DH & my sister
8/8 - AF; babysat granddaughter while DIL took her mom to the ER. Returned home at 1:30am
8/9 - AF @ 🍓🍽
8/10 - 3 wine
8/11 - 2 wine
8/12 - 2 wine
8/13 - AF; 1 Clausthaler Original Non-Alcoholic beer
Need to string more AF days together this week!5 -
Had to glasses of wine tonight but did not buy more when I ran to the market earlier. My next wine shopping will be Thursday, because it’s my night to bring wine for wine night at work.
I am going to meet with the nutrition consultant at work. She is awesome and a wealth of knowledge. Soooo close to those last 7 pounds of fat, I need to bang this out.4 -
@globalhiker (i love your screen name … i used to be a global hiker irl) I lurk your thread and pop in occasionally with NA drink finds… i have been AF for a while -pretty consistently for a couple years with stops and starts along the way in the beginning. I stopped bc i was taking a lot of medicines that didnt mix well with drinking (I had a bout with cancer and then various things chemo related ). In truth I had known in my heart of hearts that I was drinking more than I wanted to. Moderating from being a daily drinker was a failing enterprise for me - it was much easier to just break the habit entirely than set rules for myself that reminded me that i thought i had a problem every day. Please dont think that I am suggesting that is an issue for anyone other than me. I am just saying I understand what global hiker is saying and agree that for some people abstaining is easier than moderating. I dont miss it at all, i am never tempted, i am around alcohol all the time - i have 100s of bottles of wine still in my house as well as dusty bottles of liquor. And I have lost 70 lbs since I stopped drinking (not all from booze, obviously, but it helped with everything -calories, motivation, better habits, more time, willpower ).
Your sleep will get better in a while, but it is disrupted for a bit when you quit (alcohol messes with your sleep cycles and it takes a while to get back in to a normal rhythm, plus your brain in withdrawal tries all sorts of tricks to get you to drink including anxiety, stress and sleeplessness if you remedied those with drinking because those are just chemical triggers wearing off ) anyway, good luck! Its totally worth it to try for a while.5 -
AF:days: 7 days so far this month: 1,3,5,7,9,12,13
@Sinisterbarbie1 thank you, I like what you said here: "And I have lost 70 lbs since I stopped drinking (not all from booze, obviously, but it helped with everything -calories, motivation, better habits, more time, willpower )."
Got in my 2 AF back-to-back days. Total insomnia going on but I do have dewey skin. I suppose if you're gonna wake up sleepless at 1 a.m., may as well have a glow going on

8/13: AF I literally did nothing yesterday. Loaded the dishwasher, fed the cats and took two naps. Initially felt pretty guilty. When I was going to bed I realized 6 months ago if I had a day free like that then I would have started drinking at noon and been passed out by 7. Thankful.5 -
@joans1976 I love naps! Sometimes we just need two in one day! I, too, tend to collapse into a heap on my days off. Stressful and busy jobs will do that to ya! I love love love your insight that in the past you would have drank all day instead of relaxing. Wow. That’s a huge turn around!!4
