Margaret- yes Tracy and Kyles house was built in the late 40s early 50s they are going with the ductless so it would be the heat and air that are not through a pump but the newer models you see in homes ,what is it called ductless? I dont know..
Anyway..Tracy has Miles down and Kyle and Carmine are off to see Santana tonight at the casino.. last concert they went to,I told them they need to wear ear plugs.i bought them some.. grandma is smart. They brought them with them this time...
I have most of my stuff packed for my overnight..finally have the windows open for overnight which is wonderful.1 -
Beth, I am so sorry about the military failure. I don't know all the circumstances, but I feel like the funeral home was at fault there. I have heard of people not getting their ideal service time due the military folks being booked already, but never of them just not coming. There are people whose job in the military is to go play taps and fold that flag! Are you aware that your father is entitled to a free military marker? You can find the form to request that online. You have to download it, fill it out, and send it in along with a copy of the death certificate and the military discharge papers and they will send it out to you. We filled my father's out ourselves, but the funeral home faxed the paperwork in and is accepting delivery of the marker when it comes in (We asked that it be shipped to them.) They will install it at the foot of Daddy's grave at the same time they install the headstone, coping, and gravel that we ordered from them.
I scored 11 on the booklover's quiz. I felt like one of the questions should be "Do you read more than one book at a time?" I usually have a real book, an electronic book, and an audio book all going simultaneously.
I went to two funerals today - one at 11:00 a.m. and another at 2:00 p.m., and it took an hour and a half to drive from one to the other. the morning funeral was one of my lay speakers who died of bladder cancer. He was a great loss to our program. The afternoon funeral was my mother's cousin's husband. That was not one I would normally have attended, but I felt it was too soon after my father's funeral for my mother to go alone. I was glad I made the effort. They played this tear-jerking song at the end called something like "I wish I'd walked that last mile with you" and Mama lost it. I took her for some retail therapy at TJ Maxx afterwards, then stayed with her awhile after we got back to her house.
I'm still struggling getting back on track with the eating and exercise. I'll get there, though.
Welcome to all the new folks.7 -

I don't recall if the housing tracks had a name to them...but I did a google search and honestly, while Daniel's Ave rings a distinct bell to me as far as streets / addresses go, looking at images of the units I do NOT remember the buildings having fenced in backyards. (I'm 100% certain of that) and we also didn't have carports etc.
gosh it's been 25 odd years ago so I'm sure the housing complexes have been renovated since we lived there...
My memory is shot these days as to the actual street we lived on.
We lived many city & states over those 20 years of active duty...
After all of these years I would hope that the theft rate has come down in that general area since we lived there, LOL! Now that I DO remember...
No joke, our first week in Vallejo, CA our household goods had not yet arrived from Guam so the neighbor let us use their washing machine to wash our clothes then I hung everything to dry overnight on the clothesline that was a few feet behind our back door. Each row of houses had their own clothesline running right down the middle between the rows.
The next morning my husband went outside to grab the clothes off the line and they were ALL gone...who ever it was was kind enough to leave us the clothes pegs😂 🤣
They had taken numerous pairs of my hubby's 501 Levi jeans, along with several other items of clothing AND even my husbands underwear...middle of the night, right off the line. Needless to say we purchased a washer and dryer that same day, on home layaway, from the Navy Exchange, lol...
We had to park our cars on the street, and I recall many of our neighbors had their cars broken into during our stay there...thankfully we did not have this happen to us.
There was a lot of theft going on around that area back then..not sure if it's still that way but we were happy to finally get into the base housing on Mare Island itself.
yep, that is the area- MIL lives on that street, has for well close to 60 yrs. I have been over here 30. That park is where Kobe and I walk.
Yes, they have redone the housing, not military any more.
Crime rate still sucks but there are other areas of town that are worse.
my neighbor that lived next to me at Hamilton had lived over there in that housing for a short time then moved by us. Her husband would rather drive from Novato over to Mare Island than live in that housing- it was terrible back then(that was almost 40 yrs ago.)

I only got 10 points on the book lover's quiz which surprised me. I am old fashioned about it- I don't see the point of following authors, and tracking what I read is too much like work. Amazon already knows too much about me. Anyway right now I am reading "One Dharma" by Joseph Goldstein about Buddhism, and a murder mystery by Christine Dodd.
Have a great day, 😊

I keep an Excel list.
And although I don't actively follow any authors right now, I do look some up and read about them.drkatiebug wrote: »I scored 11 on the booklover's quiz. Welcome to all the new folks.
I agree.
Or even about enjoying a variety of genres.
I often have a mystery or similar going for relaxation plus something related to the brain or data or something.

Did something to my right knee last night. I was just walking up the steep stairs to the top bedroom. Felt a little catch and it hurt for a minute, then an 'uncatch' and it was a bit better, but still sore and stiff. I will definitely not be running today!
I will not do exercise this morning and limit myself to an early visit to the paper shop. A slow waddle.
Very hot most of last night and another hot day today. I was fine with my fan blowing. Had to cover myself at dawn and switch the fan off.
Things should start changing tomorrow.
Sending love and hugs to all those on this thread missing departed loved ones.I will ring my friend L today. She always feels worse in good weather, remembering their joy in sitting outside in their garden. Somehow, the world feels at odds.
So, a lazy day ahead for me.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Grandmallie...sorry Tracy is upset. HVAC problems are frustrating.
1derland 99..I Wasnt aware there were pack rats in the desert. I lived in New Mexico a couple of years and never knew.
Matchka I love a book store!
My son and his wife were suppose to come this week end but yesterday he tested positive for COVID. We still have another couple coming for lunch. I have ordered BBQ and hope it arrives on time. Husband has ALS and his speech is muffled. Good to have company while he can still talk.7 -
Kay ... I am in agreement that the funeral home may have been at fault, or at the very least, did not push hard enough. Our obituary didn't run in the paper on the day needed for visitation either, so no one other than family really knew about my Dad's death. We ended up having the obit run on the day of the service (free) but who is going to a 10:00 service if they read about it an hour earlier? I knew about the VA marker but since my dad had pre-planned decades ago (70 years earlier!!) and already had a headstone paid for, I didn't pursue it. After reading your plans, that's something I have to think about.
The hunt for a suitable facility for my mom in NY is on. Very limited options due to room availability and licensing laws. I'm touring a place today and another on Monday. Keeping my fingers crossed. I ended up contacting "A Place For Mom" to see if there were places I was missing and while there hasn't been a lot of new information, I immediately had places contacting me who had the right licensing. And since now we're very serious about moving, timing is important.
L ... never even thought about flooding in the Mojave Desert. You are certainly far removed from civilization there in the boonies! That's not a bad thing in my book.
Machka ... I didn't see points for reading the cereal box, toothpaste tube, etc! I am constantly reading, but didn't earn points for following authors or keeping track. My late son was a bibliophile and we now have boxes and boxes of his books (none of which I'm interested in). He would read 3-4 books at the same time and loved just seeing them around his room. His shelves bowed under the weight. They were like a security blanket to him and when I asked if I could declutter them at times, he always said to just leave them like they were. I had hoped to donate them, but my younger son now doesn't want to part with his brother's books... even though he, himself, is not a reader.
Allie ... while I realize I didn't know everything about my dad's health, I can tell you for certain the death certificate and it's "contributing factors" are dead wrong. One was cardiovascular disease "for years." Last summer, my dad did see a cardiologist because his heart rate dropped at a dental visit ... turned out to be nothing ... and the cardiologist told him he had the heart of a man half his age. As school starts, maybe Carmine will be able to receive counseling services/social services again through the school? Hoping this helps. I can only imagine how Kyle feels ... my husband would not handle a situation similar to his very well either. Is family counseling an option?
Rita ... summer colds ARE the worst!
Rebecca ... Athena!
It's Fair Time here in my neck of the woods and the weather is outstanding for once. When my boys were younger and involved in 4-H we were big fair-goers. Now not so much. However, this year, as a representative for Trout Unlimited, my husband is manning a booth at the fair's Conservation Building. I'm hoping he doesn't come down with Covid as it is really ramping up here in our area. He promises to stay back from the crowds, but I know him ... he'll get to kibitzing and forget to be careful.
I've put a couple pounds back on in the past week, which is most likely water/salt retention, but I need to get serious again. So back at it today.

He loves that bed, 1derland99! Just bought it on a lark and he went to it and tis his FAVE! When we had the duct crew here yesterday, I moved it into the kitchen, where I had him tethered, and he was quite happy.
OMG! Y'all be careful out there. Prayers for safety of everyone.
EWE! The talk of rats just makes my skin crawl... so I'm trying to skim that.
I just can't imagine y'all living miles and miles from "civilization". I mean, sometimes I dream of living "off the grid" kinda. NOT offline, but away from some people. Sometimes people are just too peoply for me. But someone would have to teach my how to do all that you do to survive... like what you're saying. Preparing to shop for a MONTH or more. The closest we got to that was 40 years ago, when we lived in northern WI and we lived 30 miles from the nearest major town. But we still had a small town grocery store in town. We just had to go to Rhinelander to do any BIG shopping. And being from "the cities", the locals thought I was nutz that I just drove down there on a lark. I told them that that was my daily commute before we'd moved! Needless to say, we didn't last long up there. In fact, I informed Freddy we weren't staying when I noticed snowflakes on Labor Day. (that's supposed to be the end of summer, NOT the beginging of winter)
Oh dang, Heather, I hate it when I do that and I am the QUEEN of "catching" myself. Ankles, knees, hips, elbows, whatever. I had a frozen shoulder last year. Don't know if I was in this group at the time. OMG... WORST pain in the world. When I finally got to the PT, he actually said it was the worst case he'd ever seen. I'd never heard of it. One of those things they "don't know what causes it" but then you just get it and you don't know what to do! I was in PT for almost a year with mine. My PT actually had it himself and only had about two months of therapy. Now, whenever I get a kink in my neck, on that side? I freak out! I have residual pain memory!!! LOL
Good luck, Beth. I know that is one of the hardest decisions. We were fortunate that both moms were still able to move into assisted living before needing nursing care. Prayers that you find what you need very soon.
We're working on planning our own funerals here. Not the most fun subject, but we don't want the kids to have to think about any of that stuff when the time comes. Having gone thru it with our son-in-law, of course at such a young age, we know that it's a horribly confusing and emotionally stressful time. This way they can just go to the funeral home and open a file and it's all set.

L--Not sure how you do it, but what a desert. Glad you got some relief with the AC's.
Rebecca--Thanks for the Athena pictures. She is such a happy little girl. Makes my heart smile.
Machka--I hit 11 Points.
Beth--My parents also preplanned and paid for their funeral. But we got the VA marker and put at the foot of the grave. Looks nice. Reminder that they did serve.
Not a lot going on here. Trying to get my eating under control. Stress eating anything not glued down. Just feeling really unsettled. Last night just after going to bed had a panic attack. Not such why or what, but made for another night of little to no sleep. Going on a week. Good thing is last night was last of the steroids that the doctor put me on and the cough is pretty much gone. Working 12 shift today and then have the next 2 off. Church tomorrow and not much planned for Monday.

Good Morning ☺️
We got word early this morning that with high clearance or 4WD vehicle we should be able to get through the washed out areas from yesterday so we are going to take the truck in to Vegas.
I'm going to sweet talk hubby into playing a session of Bingo (or two 😝 😜) while we are in town and before we hit up Sam's Club. Gotta get my B.I.N.G.O fix 😂
Sam's Club is usually our very last stop before heading home, especially during Summer months, so that any frozen or cold foods make it home okay..We just pack everything down in coolers/ice and we are good to go.
I lost 2 lbs this past week
Doing my little happy dance...
I better get my butt in gear...I can hear hubby in the background mumbling that I'm still on here LOL!
Have an awesome weekend ladies ☺️

Frozen shoulders are the worst. I put off getting mine checked too long and the worst thing I did(found out later) was to not move it, thinking I had torn something and didn't want to damage further-they said that is why it froze even more. By the time I went in, I had no movement at all.
The pain when it was totally frozen wasn't to bad but that PT to get it moving was terrible.
For me though, the worst part was the MRI I had to get before it to see what was wrong with it.
Didn't realize until I was going into that machine just how bad my claustrophobia was. She had to stop the machine, put my hands under my thighs to try and stop the shaking and a towel over my eyes.
She said we could stop and reschedule but my dh was heading for China in a couple days and if we rescheduled so I could have meds to put me out, he would have to drive me. I couldn't wait the three weeks until he got back. So, sucked it up. I remember hearing her voice and thinking great, I made it, just to hear her say,"you're doing a great job, we are HALF way through"
I was barely able to walk back to my car. Stopping a few times because I was shaking so bad- sat in my car for 20 min so I was able to at least drive the 10 min back home.
Now, if that shoulder feels a bit stiff, I am in the hottest shower and really moving it. NOT going through that again.
I too seem to be having issues with "catching"- Same as you- hip, knee, ankle, back. Knee started up again yesterday, put my brace on and went walking anyway. By the time I got back 45 min later, it wasn't as bad- ankle started to act up while walking but I ignored it and kept walking.
I am hoping if I loose the extra weight that I will have less of those pains.

Allie we installed ductless too about 10 years ago for A/C. It is good for heating to a point. It is too cold here to rely on it for heat in the dead of winter. It did help us when it took a month to get a new furnace last fall. It is important if they go ductless to get a company that is well known to do this work. If it is not installed properly it can be a real headache. It is powered by electricity so portion of their utility bill will go up accordingly. If they have a basement they will need to use space heaters down there. I have trouble at son's house with the basement with our 30 below temps. Son's house was built in the twenties. Ideally you do not want any part of your home to get below 50 in the winter to make sure pipes do not freeze. Our heating system is 3 zones. A thermostat on every level and controlled be an electonic board in basement. We had both the board and furnance installed eight years ago Yes the furnance part only lasted 7 years.1

My church had a garden tour on Thursday night. Members of the church opened up their gardens to share with fellow members. It was a treat.
The top of the gazebo is covered with wisteria. You can sit in there in the rain and not get wet. In May it has the purple blosoms that hang down.
The following picture is on a waterfall. I could not get picture to rotatate

Heather - Happy National Prosecco Day from the US. I was reading a bit about pairing it with chocolates and thought of you.
Vicki - enjoy your days off.
DD and her best friend are outside putting up goat fence. It is cloudy so a good day for it. DD had a good birthday yesterday, we went to Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream last night and are going out for dinner tonight. They are going hiking up by Levenworth tomorrow. I am both liturgist and singing in the choir at church.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA5 -
Hi all! I've been reading, but haven't had time to actually post, so here we go with my fading memory....
Rebecca, I'm so sorry to hear of your BIL's passing {{{HUGS}}} for you and your sister.
Lisa, happy to hear that Kelsey is "finding her feet" as it were. I was really surprised at a good friend of mine, she married a real outdoors guy and she has always been the lady. I was seeing Facebook posts of them camping and she seemed to be enjoying herself, talked to her a few years ago and she said she hated it, but went because it was time with her hubby, lol. It could work that way with Kelsey too...
Beth, very sorry to hear of your father's passing and quite surprised that the military couldn't be represented, very disappointing, I'm sure.
I'm sure there was more, and I may think of them as I go on, but....
Today is my last day of work, three more hours to go in fact! Our manager has usually done stuff for anybody who is leaving and she asked the other staff for input, we are going to her place for a bbq. I don't know if hubby will be joining me or not, I hope so, but he's been feeling lousy for some time now. Part of it is osteoarthritis and he thinks he may have a pinched nerve in his neck. Trying to get medical treatment here is near impossible these days (although when you do get it, it's free, but....). We were waiting for a referral from our gp to come thru, only to have them call hubby back (after he left a message with them) and they told him that he shouldn't have gotten the letter that says he could phone in four months if we didn't hear from them. Yes, you read that right, four months. Now they are saying 8 mos to a year, I don't know if we've already "served" four months of that time yet or how they do it. Anyway, I called our gp's office to make an appointment so that he can get a re-referral as his symptoms have changed (gotten worse) and we were going to have to wait until October, but he has someone else in while he's away, so he has a phone app't next week. We are lucky that we have a gp, tho, almost 1,000,000 people in our province (pop. approx 5 million) do not have a family doctor.
Okay, enough whining from me! Really should go do some work, it will make the time go faster!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!
