WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2022

Had a busy yet restful day. Went to store a bit later than usual. Had breakfast mid-morning. Went for a 5 mile walk. Temps cooler here to day so didn't heat up much until the end. Have done some odds and ends around the house. Worked on cleaning up some computer stuff. Trying to decide if I really want to keep a PayPal account-haven't used it in forever. Realized I hadn't changed password on it in forever, so I got that done. Updated an email account to start transitioning things to. Think I will set up a third tomorrow then I can shift things away from my original email account and leave it to the spam things. Takes me some thought and precise movements to get those things done.
Ranting a bitWanted to put something in back of suv and didn't have it pulled in to garage far enough to let tailgate go all the way up. Tried slipping my arm through even though it hit latch on garage door and was coming down to shut. Forearm just above where I wear Apple watch is pretty bruised, but otherwise seems ok. Of course, one doctor who didn't inspire confidence had gone on a tirade that my forearms were like swiss cheese with horrendous osteoarthritis. Guess swiss cheese is pretty strong! I had told them when I broke my back from a fall that I agree with osteopenia (which is what my spine tests say). They can't do a traditional exam for me for bone density due to my hip replacements. The doctor who was lecturing me (at the height of the pandemic) came in not wearing a mask (even though there were signs all over the place telling everyone in facility to wear one) and said "everyone just needs to get over this.) Didn't appreciate his attitude or his disrespect for many of the patients. So that is part of why I really am rooting for just a bruise and hope nothing else comes of it!
I have been reading the last few days but not feeling like commenting. Work was brutal. Nice to just decompress today.
Positive thoughts/prayers for those in need of them.
Take care all,

Oh dang, Heather, I hate it when I do that and I am the QUEEN of "catching" myself. Ankles, knees, hips, elbows, whatever. I had a frozen shoulder last year. Don't know if I was in this group at the time. OMG... WORST pain in the world. When I finally got to the PT, he actually said it was the worst case he'd ever seen. I'd never heard of it. One of those things they "don't know what causes it" but then you just get it and you don't know what to do! I was in PT for almost a year with mine. My PT actually had it himself and only had about two months of therapy. Now, whenever I get a kink in my neck, on that side? I freak out! I have residual pain memory!!! LOL
Carla, in MN
Carla and Debbie - I had a frozen shoulder several years ago, and before that I had never heard of such a thing. Endured a couple months of painful PT (I still have my "stick" used to stretch that arm when laying down and the pulley to hoist that useless arm up).The therapist was very good and I was gradually making improvement.
But I decided to bite the bullet and scheduled a medical massage. She kneaded the heck out of all the muscles and tendons and who knows what all in that shoulder, and she gave me a towel to bite on and scream into. I was bruised down to the elbow. BUT it made a huge difference and really got things loosened up. I'd say I'm 98% better but still have an occasional twinge in my upper back where things feel like they are sticking together again. So I baby it.
Getting things caught up. Started cleaning out the potting shed, ran into several mouse nests (yuk!) but plowed through it.
Ginny - sounds like a bad bruise, hope its nothing worse. Had to be scary for you.
Sue - great to hear the goat fence is going up. So many of these jobs take 2 people, and young ones at that.
Evey - happy retirement!! Why is there such a shortage of GP's in BC? My DH's cousin from Montreal came to visit us many years ago, said the Canadian medical system wasn't very good and people who lived near the border and had $$ paid for US doctors. I'm not even sure what the status of US docs is these days. Maybe the pandemic made them decide to just retire and go enjoy their life and family. Can't blame them but it does leave us patients in the lurch sometimes.
I guess that's the quick version. Have a wonderful Sunday!

Still working and Jess is still moving. She came here last night (we thought she was going to come the next weekend) to empty out her storage unit. She and Colby had lunch here and then left to go back.
The good news is that I don’t work tomorrow so I can exercise...yea! The plan is to do a Tracey Anderson Slim and Sculpt Cardio DVD then maybe some pilates. Hope to go for a walk tonight after dinner and tomorrow at least in the a.m., hopefully both a.m. and p.m. Update: got it in tonight
Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I went to Food Lion and the minute I went to check out this one woman rushed over to the register. What’s the deal. She did the same thing the last time I was there. I asked for a raincheck and she hemmed and hawed. Never had that happen to me. Maybe I’ll just go in the evening when she usually isn’t there.
Got Vince to go with me to see “Where the Crawdads Sing”. Boy, then change quite a bit from the book. But it was still good. I would like to see the Downton Abbey movie. What is it? We used to have theaters that showed second run movies for like $3. Now they run first run movies for $7.
Sue WA – happy Birthday to your daughter.
Jess helped me finished one jigsaw puzzle last night and start on the next one.
1derland...it’s so hard losing our fur babies. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Beth – so very sorry for you
Lanette – when we were looking for a new car for me it absolutely had to have bluetooth and I really wanted it to be able to get Sirius XM. Other than that, I did not want a 2-door. Those were my requirements
Anne DE – hope it passes quickly for your sister
I don’t know why I made another Pookey Snail at ceramics. Well...Jess doesn’t want it so I’m thinking that after we fix the eyes, I’ll put him in front of the house where I have a sign that says “back door guests are best”
Debbie – Vince is a softie about cats, too.
By the time I finished work, helped Jess pack, had lunch, it was almost 3. I have to get ready for church around 4 since I’m lectoring.
Heather – so sorry about your knee. Hope it heals fast
Didn’t even take the reading quiz since I’m sure I won’t get a high score at all. I’m not a big reader.
Rosemarie – sorry about your son but happy you are having company
Cut the “grass” yesterday and there was a problem with the tractor. We had to take the mower deck to be repaired, Vince couldn’t figure it out. They expect to have it finished in a week.
Ginny – sorry about your “accident” and about the MD. Hope it works out for you. Let us know
Painted the black on the Pluto, will just do the touch up and have Michelle (at ceramics) finish the eyes and I’ll clear glaze them. Hopefully, it’ll be ready to fire.
Made salmon cakes and have them in the refrigerator right now firming up so I can fry them tomorrow then made a banana bread for Vince since I gave Colby the rest of the banana chocolate chip muffins I made. Can you tell that bananas were on sale??? lol
The song "Athena" just came on the radio and thought of Rebecca.

About being a reader. When I was teaching first grade I went to a weekend workshop out of town with several of my colleagues. The keynote speaker talked about having a desire, inclination, and disposition toward reading as being important before addressing the mechanics. She talked about going to homes of students where there were no books or magazines in evidence. She said "Most of you probably have more reading material in your suitcases this weekend than some of you students' families have in their entire house.
I would rather read than go to a party. One reason I take my phone with me wherever I go is that I have an e book downloaded on it so I can read if I have a moment.
Barbie in NW WA2 -
Hmm. I am definitely more comfortable reading than going to a party but I would push myself to the party because I can read anytime.
I went to see "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in DC with my friend Craig. It was marvelous, very funny. Lots of physical comedy, and modern updates to the script. The costuming was very helpful in keeping the characters straight. There were bits of music. The whole thing was very well done. And we had great seats. All in all, a wonderful show. I really do enjoy good theater.

After yesterday's 50 km bicycle ride, we came home and I went to bed and slept extremely deeply for over 3 hours. Back to bed a few hours later and I've just got up after nearly 12 hours of sleep.
Way too stressed and exhausted apparently.

Tonight made teriyaki chicken in my cast iron. Its always a sticky mess to scrub out. Lee likes his chicken blackened a bit, so the teriyaki sauce gets baked in good. I let it sit on the burner with hot water, and I used course salt and my chain mail scrubber. I then used the spatula and scraped a bit. Lastly when I only had a little left, I dried it and sat on the warm burner to get it all dried out and some more actually curled up and flaked off. Yay! Darn bugger!
Watched a scary movie called "The Black Phone" last night. Oooh chilling!
Summer has left our island, no more windows open anymore. Wearing long sleeved shirts again. On the good side our electric bill was only $65 this month.👍🏻
Today was some letter writing, a couple of movies, and a proper egg salad sandwich. Simply yummy! I made a new batch of cole slaw. I really enjoy that with a meal now. An easy way to get veggies in, along with my fridge cucumber slices and pickled beets daily. I also drink my Sparkling Ice grapefruit water with a hearty splash of Bragg's apple cider vinegar. Love that! Do many of you eat the same foods every day like a vitamin? I do.😁💖
Hugs Michele for thinking of me when that song came on.💖. Who sings it?

Machka glad you could get some deep sleep!
The other nice thing about my event today is that I left a checklist for my mom and she followed it. It just said take your pills and feed the dog, but it worked and she was able to cross off each item so it only happened once. So I am able to leave! Yay!
So I am thinking of buying a pass to a theater festival for next year. It's kind of risky, in that I might not be able to leave to see all the plays. But I could afford to lose the money, so I might as well bet on the vacation I want, then try to make it happen. It's the Contemporary American Theater Festival next July. Six thought provoking modern plays, yet to be chosen. Exciting!

Sometimes people are just too peoply for me. But someone would have to teach my how to do all that you do to survive... like what you're saying. Preparing to shop for a MONTH or more. The closest we got to that was 40 years ago, when we lived in northern WI and we lived 30 miles from the nearest major town. But we still had a small town grocery store in town. We just had to go to Rhinelander to do any BIG shopping. And being from "the cities", the locals thought I was nutz that I just drove down there on a lark. I told them that that was my daily commute before we'd moved! Needless to say, we didn't last long up there. In fact, I informed Freddy we weren't staying when I noticed snowflakes on Labor Day. (that's supposed to be the end of summer, NOT the beginging of winter)
Carla, in MN
When I moved to Australia, my husband and I lived in a "shack" about 2 km from "the grid". A few months earlier, a major bushfire had come through the area and it was one of the few buildings left standing. It was at the very back of the property my husband was working on. We powered things with a generator, and later solar power. Water came from the rain. We cooked in the fireplace or with a coleman stove. Later we got a small BBQ.
The nearest, very small, town was about 10 km away. We got our mail there and could pick up a few basic grocery items. The nearest, slight larger, town was about 28 km away. But about every 6 weeks, we'd go into Melbourne in one direction or another city in another direction to do a big grocery shop.
We lived there a year.
Living off the grid is a lot of work!

Rebecca - what a nice photo of your BIL and Tucker. I agree, Tucker will help pull her through.
I see miniature Bernese Mountain Dogs advertised - a cross between the Bernese and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Pretty cute!
Summer is still here, will have temps in the 80's this week. I found a couple hornet nests close to where I need to weed-eat so will sneak out there with the spray before the sun gets too high and give them a squirt and run, lol. It's chilly right now, around 49f which should slow them down.
Have a load of laundry going and pulled out the little carpet cleaner. I dumped a cup of coffee in the living room a few weeks ago, accidentally brushed it off the coffee table. So will go after it. I'm not too worried about it, stains happen.
Make it a super day!

Good morning ladies!
I barely slept. Too much iced tea, and a decadent chocolate fudge cake before bedtime. Plus I'm all excited about this theater festival, even though it's next July. I might even lose some weight before then!
Meanwhile I'm back to waiting for my mom to get up and take her pills.
My buddy wants me to drive out to his house the end of this month for a restaurant special five course dinner with special wine pairings. It took me a bit to realize that's five glasses of wine - I would be well beyond tipsy and into wasted territory. I have to tell him I can't do that one. I hate saying no.

Hi, everyone. I'm not new to MFP, but I am back again trying to lose weight. I'm 52 and a stay-at-home mom. One kid is in college, the other is a senior this year. I need to lose about 50 lbs (60 is my dream goal, but I'm trying to be realistic -- and honestly, any weight that puts me into a healthy weight category is acceptable). I lost about 30 lbs and was close to crossing over to the healthy weight range. Once the pandemic hit, the Y closed and I rarely left the house and basically went back to my old ways and regained it. So, here I am again.
Things have been pretty tough for me this last year. I lost my mom and it really makes me think about my mortality and the kind of life I want to have. I don't want to just exist anymore. I want to be around to see my future grandkids and be in good enough shape to do things with them. So, I'm trying once again to get my act together. I have some issues with food binges in response to emotion, but my actual biggest hurdle is how out of shape I have become by being so sedentary. I think that will be the key to losing weight and getting healthier. But I have such a resistance to doing exercise that I'm really struggling with that part.
It's been a long time since I've been at a healthy weight (about 20 years) and I'm menopausal, so I worry that I might be doomed to be fat forever. But, I'm trying not to let my natural pessimism stop me from at least trying to do this.
Well, I guess that's enough of my life story for now

I have my "STICK" too Lanette!!! HAHAHAHA! Thanks for that laugh! And I have my rubber bands! I can honestly say that I am danged near 100%. Aside from that "feeling" once in awhile of thinking that maybe I messed something up, I can move my arm almost every which way it's supposed to go. The only thing my right arm can't do that the left can is go behind my back and UP as high. Does that make sense? You know, like when you'd try to unfasten your bra while the straps were still on your shoulders? I couldn't do that with my right hand.
OH EVEY, I am SO HAPPY for you! (and a tad jealous) Hope you had a wonderful three hours and a glorious BBQ!
Michele, I love my KIA Sportage, but right now it's a little spooky. Apparently they're one of the easiest to steal bc they're one on the easiest to hotwire. REALLY?!? Come'on people!
WOW, Machka.......... just WOW!
So Saturday was rather glorious here. Windows-open kinda day. A little humid, but not too much that we couldn't leave the windows open. We had a darling, young buck wander through the backyard late Friday night and again Saturday. He munched on our grass and plants and calmly looked up to the house as if to say, "what'cha starin' at?" I just love our backyard. I worked on my online designer's businesses and card-making busy-work before reclining to the living room to movie-watching and game-playing for the evening.

Hello all! Still stopping in daily and reading.
Katla- So happy you and your DH are together and he is recovering with your help.
Heather- Slovenia! What a great experience for the family! lol Good luck to Edie with the ice cream!
Allie- I think I missed it; why are you staying at Tom and Elena's? Also, I hope Tracey and Kyle can get the furnace situation sorted. When money was tight for us; we would use Home Depot for our maintenance and repairs, because we could charge it to our HD account. (They contract everything out to local tradesmen)
L- You and I are at about the same weight. It is a hard road, but we can do this. I have about 100 lb I want to lose. Your desert life is very interesting to me. Do you read a lot or have a hobby that keeps you busy?
Beth- So sorry to hear about the lack of military honors at your dad's service. I, too, am wondering if finding color/honor guard is getting harder, due to the age of the guard volunteers and due to covid concerns. Still something that you should have known about beforehand, so that you could maybe plan to honor him another way. Hugs to you!
Lisa- Levi has gotten so big! I am happy to hear Kelsey is "moving on"; and at the same time hoping she takes some time to be comfortable with herself before looking for someone to "fill a gap".
Machka- Glad to hear your ride went well! Rest. Rest. Rest. You need and deserve it!
Pip- You and Kirby are campers par excellence! You should think about doing a "camping over 50" vlog.
Tracey- Love the denim ceramic vase/pot! You are truly skilled!
My field trip went off well. The kids and I had a great time and, as always, we entertain the locals as we make our way around the downtown area in our tie-dye shirts. lol Each field trip we visit a "new" business for lunch and snack. This trip we visited a food truck called Crepes by the Lakes. I got the kids basic ham and cheese crepes and I got a lovely vegetarian crepe. The two young ladies working the food truck were very patient and one of them came out and helped me pick up the kids so that they each had a turn watching how their crepes were being made. The kids were very impressed with the size of the crepes.
lol It brought up a memory, that I still laugh about. When my daughter graduated from high school, I prepared all of the food for her grad party. She wanted an international theme; so we had (Spain/Mexico) a taco bar, (Switzerland) a fondue bar with chocolate and cheese and appropriate dippers, and (France) a crepe bar with crepes and a choice of savory and sweet toppings. Oh, how I remember the crepe marathon. I made 500 crepes for that party. The things I did for that child! My son, god bless him, wanted a sandwich buffet, salads, and rootbeer floats. Boys are SOOOO much easier!
Well, I need to get busy. Today is my food prep day. On my cooking list is: banana bread, granola, black bean burger mix, and stir fry sauce for tomorrow's stir fry. Yesterday, I got my old wooden swing cut up and ready to be burned, and I moved some rolls of hog wire fencing so that they are now back behind my shed in the back yard. Found a snake while doing so. It was a hoggie; so he was startled and automatically assumed the "dead" position. He stayed that way long enough for DH to get outside and see him. He is not a "nature guy" so it kind of freaked him out when I picked it up and it stayed "dead". AND NO...I did not chase him around the yard with it. lol Talk to you all later. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Awww thx. I told Kirby he said Our way of camping is not for everyone. People want major comfort TV on the outside, slide outs and all the extras. We’ve had almost every one passing our campsite looking and commenting on how cute it was. On our 1st day alone we had about 5 couples asking to see inside and take pictures.3 -

Just waved everyone goodbye after an impromptu scavenger hunt for my daughter's billfold. We turned the living room furniture upside down looking for it, and found a baby snake that Egg must have brought in a while back. Unlike yours, KJ, it wasn't playing dead, it was quite stiff. That cat the death of me someday.
I like the guy my daughter brought home. He is a quiet and serene soul, something she needs in her life, but I just don't know if she's matured enough to understand that kind of love is the one that lasts. I hope so, Corey and I both liked him, and I think the kids need someone like that in their lives, too, but it's too soon to tell.
Exhausted, sweaty after the eventually successful hunt, and ready to be quiet for a while. Love to see them come, love to see them go.
Love y'all,

Ok I am down to business!
I have put the scale in the guest bathroom, along with a weekly chart, and will weigh myself every Sunday. I don't quite like what the scale says now, but I have hope that I won't see that number next Sunday.👍🏻 Should I confess? Bless me My fitness pals, I now weigh 247. Its not the 230's I have been happily wallowing in and fasting. So the reality is my portions have gotten to big, and I need to rein it in a bit.
This weeks goals:
-I will fast for 48 hours to get a good base feeling. So my next meal will be Monday at 6pm. I plan on Cole slaw, pickled beets, some chicken broth with a couple of my leftover lasagna noodles cut up, and some chicken in there too.
-drink a big pint of water every two hours during the day.(we have a collection of Oregon beer pints, and that's what we use as glasses)😁.
-NO COFFEE. I tend to want sweetener and half & half in mine anyways. I will stick to only drinking it when I am having a meal.
-morning stretches, or dancing for an hour.
-yard work in the afternoon for an hour.
-walk in the late afternoon before I fix Lee dinner for an hour. Just pick a route and walk for 30 min, then take the same route home.
Those are my plans anyways! I need to get a handle on myself. Its really easy to forget, become so darn complacent, and settle for not really caring for myself. Today I will have my hair cut short, that will make me feel better.
If I do all the things I say I will do, I will be tired enough to sleep and not lie there doing mindless activities like picking my nails and biting my cuticles, its a terrible habit!
So as you can probably guess, I get these bees in my bonnet, and its all or nothing. One thing I have never done is be consistent. The simple task of doing tasks on a daily basis, that always has kicked my butt. Hints ladies? You gals that make a healthy lifestyle a conscious decision every single day. I want to have energy to play with Athena. I want to see my youngest sailor get married and have kids. Sure I am reasonably healthy, but that will only get me maybe 15 more years on this earth. At 60 I would like to rock those, not just endure them you know?

Rebecca--I understand where you are at. It is easy for eating to get away from us. Even though I haven't tracked 100% everything since quitting smoking (and picked up some extra!), daily weighing food when I can and logging is the only thing that has helped me. Just keep the end in mind and do what moves you more towards that. No need to beat yourself up. No one can stay on a plan 100%-what's important is to get back with the plan-not throw it out because of misstep.
