WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the October 2022 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10874873/october-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until November 1, 2022 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comand create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Plan has me at 200 miles not counting optional runs. Thanksgiving week I duplicated a week to take a few days off around the holiday. I will mostly play it by ear to see how I'm feeling. I may really enjoy a few extra rest days. BTW, last month I said "holy crap 180 miles!" and here we are with a 200 mile month. This is nuts y'all.10
-
@martaindale it's definitely nuts but awesome at the same time!
My goals for the month are:
1) to be as active as possible without overdoing it (that's frustratingly vague, but I'm relearning "listening to my body")
2) to maintain the "workout spot" in my schedule, even if that's just a walk or something short
Seems like enough challenge for one month 😎9 -
@polskagirl01 Your goals seem like exactly what you need right now. It's so hard to be patient with yourself and you're doing great keeping active even if it doesn't look like it did in previous years.5
-
@martaindale - definitely nuts but also awesome like @polskagirl01 said!
I missed the 100 mile mark in October due to company and an unexpected road trip. That won't be a problem, I don't think, in November so going for the 100 mile club!
Thanks for setting us up @martaindale!!6 -
Thanks for setting up November @martaindale!
If I go by my plan, it only calls for 134 miles in November, but October said only 107 and I will hit close to 180, so I really don't know what to put down. I have two 20 milers planned, but also start tapering at the end of the month. So I'll just put 150 and see what happens.7 -
400 miles is goal. Really hoping the back spasms calm down. Activates when I sit or try to get up. Walking, standing, running, not bothering me.8
-
My new plan calls for 59 miles, so I am going to round up to 60. October was slow for me after my marathon, so I'm hoping to kick things back into gear in November.7
-
I am in for 120 miles again. Squeaked by in Oct with 127 so far and 2 days to go. Trying to stay on track for 1500 for the year and am at 1267 so it's doable but not many rest days. I have been taking it fairly easy the past week or so pace wise since a co worker generously passed her and her child's virus to me. I think after not being sick at all during the pandemic that even the minor ones are annoying.... I wouldn't really know I had it except my resting heart rate has been elevated and 2 days after she came into work coughing I had the same cough in the morning. All other symptoms are minor (I even took a covid test to be sure) but I think as runners we are much more in tune to knowing when things are somewhat off.6
-
Thanks @martaindale ... my mind boggles at the thought of that many miles!
@polskagirl01 so hard to learn how to really listen to your body and give it what it needs instead of what you think it should need. Hang in there.
I have no idea what to put down for my goal in November, so rather than a distance I'll say to follow my new plan and more importantly, do the damn strength training!
October ended up as my lowest mileage month all year, didn't even hit 100km which is killing my brain, but my legs are still not fully recovered so I'm forcing myself to sit it out.
Yesterday I volunteered at our local HM and a couple of times found myself running a couple of steps to grab more water bottles and stuff. No pain in my legs doing it, but they feel tired this morning. Actually, I found it more tiring than running the race!
Anyway, I digress. I joined an online trail training club which has monthly plans, but they're done by time rather than distance. So I'll be sticking to that for a few months and will see what the mileage looks like. I've signed up for a short mountain race in January. And they open up inscriptions for the April trail marathon I'm thinking about on Friday so I have 4 days left to talk myself out of doing something crazy (again)...8 -
I really don’t have a ‘miles goal’ in mind .. That would be my first time to be active and thinking about running goals .. I will just do one hour of jogging/ running daily and add the miles here by the end of the month.. that would be my goal for the month. Never thought of myself as a runner so this will be a BIG challenge for me ..8
-
@eleanorhawkins Your race was brutal. No wonder your legs are still feeling tired. I hope you enjoy the trail training club. Do they meet and run together once a week? Good luck with talking yourself into out of the marathon.
Welcome to the group @Dida_Basilico . How much running have you been doing?3 -
Thanks for setting us up for November @martaindale !
I am giving up on a training plan for my 10 mile race in Dec. I am going to just do what I can every day. That's basically what I did last month, since the plan was there just to remind me of what I wasn't doing. LOL So, the real goal is to keep the mile streak going. I will go ahead and set a mileage goal of 70 miles since I managed 72 in October. Hopefully I can get in at least a couple of long runs.6 -
@eleanorhawkins Your new plan sounds like a good fit for trail running. Looking forward to hearing your experience with it . And it's a good goal to do the damn strength training.
Welcome @Dida_Basilico. Tell us a little about your running story!3 -
@quilteryoyo no real meets, it's all online, cheaper than individual coaching but there is a tonne of trail and ultra info, lots of different training plans every month depending on distance and other factors, strength, core and mobility workouts and video q&a sessions every couple of weeks with a coach and a PT, plus a facebook group for members.
I have, however, found out that a couple of ladies from the running club in the city I can't quite get to for club sessions live relatively near me and maybe interested in morning runs. I'm sad not to run with the guys from the original club, but they are way too young and fast for me.
Re your 10 mile plan... you have been so consistent for so long that I think even if you don't follow the plan to the letter your fitness will get you through. It might not be fast, and you might feel it afterwards, but you can certainly do it.5 -
On the books for November with 6.2 miles this morning. First mile was rough, but felt better on the next 5. Weather was a perfect 56F and no wind.
5 -
Thanks @eleanorhawkins . I don't know if you saw my end of Oct post or not, but I did manage to complete 10.05 miles in 2h26m28s yesterday - I ran/walked 8 of those and totally walked the other two. So, I know that I can do it and beat the 3 hour cut off. I was hoping for a fast run, but for this year, it is what it is. I hope to run it next year, so there will be plenty of room for improvement. The online training sounds like a good fit right now. I hope you and the ladies can get together every once in a while for a group run. I would think it would be hard to find someone with the same pace so no one is struggling to keep up or having to slow down as to not be way ahead.4
-
@eleanorhawkins I hope you and the ladies can figure out some time to run together. You have voiced wanting some running buddies for a while now, so I hope it works out for you. I would love to have someone I could run with occasionally, but alas, my run schedule seems totally out of whack with most of my neighborhood. The closest I have is 1 lady that lives near me at our other place. She is faster than me for sure, but we’re close enough that we can make it work for shorter distances, even if that’s only a few times a year.
@quilteryoyo Your consistency is paying off. It’s got to be good to know you can get out there and do 10 miles even if you haven’t been training the way you would like. And, room for improvement next year is a great way to think of it!3 -
November total: 5/200 miles
11/1: 5 miles
Recovery miles this morning. It was about 60 and lightly raining. Rain running is the best. It’s so quiet and the run becomes peaceful and meditative. And my legs felt good after a tough workout yesterday.
Do you guys get a lot of trick-or-treaters? We get some, but not that many. We are at the very end of a winding cul-de-sac and people just don’t make it all the way to the end of the street. We had really nice weather for it last night so had one of the better turn-outs we’ve had in several years.5 -
11/1 16.58 miles, Running Partner A
7 -
My goal for November is 100 miles. I'm taking vacation next week but that should give me more time for running. I joined Coach Jenny Hadfield's Holiday Challenge which started yesterday. Hoping that will keep me motivated to workout consistently through the rest of the year. This morning I ran 5.20 miles and walked 1.07 mile at lunch and went to the onsite gym to do a pyramid workout.
@martaindale - I live in a very rural area and don't get any trick-or-treaters so I buy candy and go to my mom's where we sit on the porch and hand it out to all the ghosts and goblins. Although it rained off and on all day yesterday, it stopped late yesterday afternoon and it was a decent evening for it. We had 98 trick or treaters visit us.
Beautiful sunrise @AlphaHowls!5 -
11/1 5.01 Cum 5.01 out of 120 goal
@AlphaHowls our morning was just like that. A lot of hanging humidity in the air but cooler than normal. Great photo!
Today's run was not very exciting except there seemed to be a lot more "traffic" in the hood than normal altho it was my normal pre work run. Great weather and I wasn't pushing for anything other than just a few miles with no pace or HR goals in mind. GOing to try to keep posting up here more frequently but sometimes it's nice just to read everyone's adventures too.5 -
Checking in with a fast (for me) 4km run
02.11 Tue 12°C 4.0km 33min
total: 4.00/80.5km (1.3km ahead)
Annoyance: My Garmin watch didn't record this run. I sync'ed the data over to Garmin but it's still not part of the VO2max etc data. Hmpf.3 -
Thanks @martaindale . Great run. As for trick or treaters, we got a lot when I was little, but once they started doing trunk or treat and things in town, no one comes around the rural neighborhoods anymore, not even the neighborhood kids.
Beautiful picture of this morning's run @AlphaHowls ! Hope your back is feeling better.
That's a lot of trick or treaters @Teresa502 ! Bet your mom enjoys spending that time with you. Great workout today...run, walk, and gym! Amazing since you also worked!
Nice run @SummerSkier . Sometimes it's great to not have any sort of goal in mind and just get out there and run!
Nice run @yirara . Sometimes it takes a bit for my Garmin to sync with Garmin Connect. I assume it's my slow internet, but who knows.

2.0/70.0 miles
Run - 0.00 Walk - 2.00 miles - driveway laps
Decided to walk a couple of miles instead of run since I had the long run yesterday. I'm not sore at all, knock on wood. Just being cautious. I also cleaned house and hauled some wood at mom's this afternoon.
My Garmin is being weird. It is saying that I have no "training status," that I need to run outdoors twice with my HR to get a status. Why running outdoors. I would think a treadmill run and all the running I have been doing outside would count. It seems to have in the past. Fortunately, I really don't care. Just thought it was odd.3 -

Hi all. Good morning from Cape Town, 🇿🇦
Got in a v.scenic 10Miler to kick start November.
Target for Nov is 135.7 -
7 miles this morning. Not a bad run, but not great either. Tried to go slow and easy, but just managed the slow part. It felt effortless for about a minute after about 4 miles, then it was gone.
4 -
As part of the Holiday Challenge, I needed to run the Great Pumpkin 5K this week so I headed out around 7:00 am and got that done. My time was slower than I would have liked it to have been, but grateful I was able to get outside and run it.
What a beautiful place to run @tarun_yadavA!3 -
01.11 Tue 12°C 4.0km 33min 8:09/km
02.11 Wed 10°C 6.4km 51min 8:00/km
total: 10.36/80.5km (5.0km ahead)
Hey, fastest run in ages. Which, I know is not fast for most but doesn't matter. Did a fartlek session with 6x3min fast and slow. Slow running is still super difficult for me but faster running is getting easier. Odd.5
