It was cold this morning at 32°F when I got up. I decided to wait until it warmed up to get my 5K in for the Hug a Runner challenge. I ran at 12::15 and it was still 48°F. It was sunny though and really pretty out so I enjoyed the run. It should be similar weather tomorrow. I'm planning to try to sleep in a little bit so it will at least be in the 40's for my long run.

It was 33°F when I got up this morning so I waited to run until about 9:30 when it was up to 42°F. That's still a colder than I like, so I waffled about what to wear. I finally decided on shorts and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. I was chilly starting out, but I reminded myself that I need to dress for the end of the run, not the start if the run especially on long run days. I was dressed appropriately. I ran 10 miles. I have mittens that open into fingerless gloves. I opened them up about 3 miles in and at about 3.5 miles I pulled the sleeves down to my elbows. And at about 4 miles I took them all off. But then at about 7 miles when I was headed home into the wind I got chilly and put them back on. It was a pretty day and it was a nice run.

Nice run @kgirlhart . I hope the weather cooperated for your long run today. We must have posted at the exact same time. Glad you had such a nice 10 mile run today.
Another nice run @tarun_yadavA !
Great recovery run @Scott6255 .
I managed to get in a short treadmill session after church, lunch, and a much needed nap. I walked a total of 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down and did a run/walk for 3/2 minutes at 4.5-5.1/3.8 mph. Overall pace was okay @ 13:39 min/mile. I know it is slow, but still planning on this strategy for my 10 mile race in Dec.
Speaking of which, when I was making my hotel reservations yesterday, I noticed that we have to be at the gate to get onto Cape Canaveral no later than 6:30 (they open it up at 4:30) the morning of the race, which starts at 7:30am. You all know that I am NOT a morning person. Should I try to get up early most days between now and then so my body is somewhat used it or just go with my normal and know that is going to be a different sort of day? Also, I am trying to find out how many people are registered for the race, but am having no luck with that. I have a feeling this will be the biggest race I have ever run, as far as number of people go, so I'm a little nervous about the whole thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.7 -

I do my best to match conditions of my runs to race day conditions. I had the opposite last month where I am used to running at 5 AM and the race did not start till 8 AM. I made sure a few of my runs were at that time. Around here you are dealing with rapidly changing conditions this time of year. It could have been cold or blazing hot. I was not worried about cold conditions, my main concern was running too hot. Thankfully, race day was mild. I think your plan would be to match some conditions of a few of your runs to what you think race day will be like.

@quilteryoyo lovely pic of you and your aunt! 😊3

Morning all. Monday! Back to the grind.
Got in a 9k4 -
Thanks for the insight @AlphaHowls . I will try to do that.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA . You are getting back to your normal speedy self.3 -
@quilteryoyo I agree with AlphaHowls... I always try to make my training as similar as possible to race day conditions: same time of day, same clothes, same shoes, same breakfast, etc. etc. So yes, I'd say try to get used to waking up and running at that time of day for at least a few days/weeks beforehand. Bear in mind that if you usually run later in the day, you may need to find what works for you in regards to waking up and having coffee or something to eat or whatever and then running with that in your stomach, and also bathroom visits... Regarding the crowds... my only piece of advice as a back-of-the-pack runner is to get as far back in the corral as you can to avoid being trampled by faster runners at the start and be prepared to have to walk for a bit at the beginning until the crowd thins out a little, especially if a lot of runners have to get through relatively narrow gates/gaps or whatever.
I'm finally feeling recovered from my race and am gradually easing myself back into things. So far this month I've also managed to do all the strength, mobility and core workouts on my plan and they're starting not to hurt so much, yay!
One thing the plan calls for is a 20-30 minute 'test' at some point near the beginning to determine zones for effort levels, speedwork, etc. so I did that this morning instead of the 20 minutes 'tempo' in the progression run on the schedule. I didn't die, but oh boy did it remind me how long it is since I've tried to run 'fast'. I've lost some speed but not too much, and at least I know I won't pass out during a little local charity 3k I've signed up for in a couple of weeks' time!6 -
I met a friend for 5 miles before work this morning. It was 28F and of course I overdressed. It will take me a couple of runs in the colder weather to figure the wardrobe situation out.
@quilteryoyo - great advice from @alphahowls and @eleanorhawkins. I concur with them!6 -

total: 54.46/80.5km (14.7km ahead)
Yay, finally a run with a pace starting with 7.
So this was an odd one. I started to run, and immediately noticed that my blood pressure dropped and blood pooled in my feet. When this happens my heartrate usually goes down and my body doesn't fix this because it's a lazy *kitten* (kind of like the opposite of POTS). So I started running, the blood remained in my feet, my HR remained fairly low, my lowest leg muscles HURT! Started to run faster to get HR up, and faster, and only at the end of the run did something happen. I basically ran my lungs out and Garmin classified this run as baserun because my HR was so low.
I might only be able to get in one, maybe two more runs this month because I have minor foot surgery on Thursday to remove limpomas around my ankle. So I guess I won't make the 80.5km goal. But it was still a good month. Annoyed I won't make the Garmin badge for 300km running in 3 months though.5 -
Thanks @eleanorhawkins ! Glad you are mostly recovered from your race. Those tests runs can be brutal. Sounds like you did great.
You did great to get out to run @Teresa502 . I'm not ready for cold weather running yet. LOL
Nice running @yirara . I hope your foot surgery goes well and you recover quickly.
I didn't work at daycare today, but did some things around the house that I've been putting off way too long. I classified those as my MUST DOs, so put off running until I was done. That was a mistake, as I was beat by then. I did make myself do a treadmill wun - only running enough to keep my HR above 100. Avg HR was 111. Max 132. I traversed a total of 2.10 miles. That makes my total for the month so far 26.6/70 mile goal.3 -

It was cold this morning and I really didn't want to go outside. But I finally got out and had a really enjoyable run. I was singing and just really having fun. I saw a deer running down the highway. He was running towards me along the shoulder of the highway and when he saw me he stopped and stared at me a few minutes before turning and running off. I tried to take a picture, but he was gone before I could get my phone out. When I got to the park saw 4 more deer on the soccer fields. There was also a loose dog at the park. I have see him before. He lives at one of the houses across the street. He's very friendly. Usually he will approach me and then get distracted by other people walking at the park. But today he followed me home. I took his picture and posted it on Facebook. I hope he went back home. My house is about 1K from the park so it's not too far, but there is highway to cross.

Good Morning all... from a very wet and miserable London!
Got in 9k again. Drenched tho...6 -
@kgirlhart Great job getting out for a cold run. And sooooo glad to hear that you had a great fun run! I love seeing deer. Glad the dog is friendly. He's really pretty. I hope he got home safely too. My guess is that he did since he seems to roam. He is probably street smart.
Wish my sleasy runs were at that pace @tarun_yadavA ! You did great for the conditions.6 -
Thank you @quilteryoyo2
-
and BOOM runs with skunks becomes runs with deer. Much better I think.
66.97 total for the month out of 120. 1340 for the year so 160 to go to make 1500 total..... feels like I am running out of room but just have to avg 3.5 per day.
Today was just not fun tho. It was cold 38 feels like 31 with a 10 mph bitter north wind and humidity dankness and cloudy. About 2 miles in I started the need to pee so I definitely sped up to get home faster. Not sure why but when it gets cold I have to pee about every 5 minutes it seems..
I am supposed to play tennis this afternoon and it should be in the 50's. If the wind stops and the sun stays out I think it will be ok.
@tarun I hate running in the rain and sometimes when I get caught out after a while I just accept it and then hope my shoes will not be ruined.6 -
29.6/70.00 miles goal
I got up early enough this morning to get my run in and a shower before the pest control guy came, and then worked at daycare for 4 hours. I'm glad I got the run done early. However, I've just felt off today. I keep taking my temperature to make sure I don't have one and it's always 97.x°F. I woke up sweating and then I poured sweat during the entire walk and run...which was on the treadmill in a coolish basement. I mean, I do sweat when I run down there, but this was not normal. I didn't really feel hot, but lost enough water.
Anyway, I walked a total of 0.7 miles for warm up and cool down, then ran/ran or walked 3/2 min at 4.5/4.2/4.6/4.2/4.7-5.1/3.8 mph. Total was 2.30 miles in 31:03 minutes for an average pace of 13:30 min/mile. Average HR was 121 and max was 139 bpm.
One thing I learned today for getting up early to run is that I need to add an extra 30 minutes because it seems like I always get a later start than expected and have to cut it shorted than originally intended.
I started feeling better about 4 pm, so not sure what was going on. I'm still really tired, but hope that whatever was "wrong" was fleeting and is gone.
@SummerSkier Those temps are really cold to me too. I just don't have the proper clothing for running in those temps. I hope the wind died down and you had another great tennis match. Great running.4 -
@kgirlhart nice running, and that dog is SOOOO cute!
@tarun_yadavA great run in the rain, but I'm with @SummerSkier I like running in the rain in the summer, but no thank you for cold winter rain running!
6.2 miles this evening. Hadn't done much speed work lately, so thought I would do a fast-ish 10K workout. It felt kinda hard, but not an all-out sprint. I negative split every mile. Cool 43F temp helped, but I over dressed.

It was really cold this morning. I took an early lunch today and ran about 10:30 instead of 5:30. It was still really cold. I just ran 5K for Hug a Runner. But I was able to do it in just under 30 minutes. It's supposed to be 33°F tomorrow morning so it will be slightly warmer than today. I am really not a fan of cold.
6 -
@SummerSkier I'm no fan of the rain either... And yes, hate that wet shoe feeling! Still trying to hit 'Undo' on those two weeks of vacation carnage! (And going to the gym -paying per session- to use it for Max one hour during work hours... Nahhh).
@Scott6255 I guess where you guys are (looks like a lot of TX and a sprinkling of other southern states thrown in here on this group), it must get really really hot in the summers. So yeah, I can imagine, those sprinkles must feel nice.
Other than a freak African heatwave (which took temps to 40C [ that's >100F for you guys] ) it doesn't tend to get that hot here. Couple of nice summer months perhaps. Other than that, rain - bleurgh. No thanks!3 -
Morning all. Got a pacey 10k in today.
Wanted to push myself a bit without going 'Max effort'.
(Going out tonight on a rare date night, to some launch party Mrs has been invited to... So thought I'd do a bit extra!)6 -
@eleanorhawkins I have plans to get a small camper once my kid inherits my current car, which is too small to tow anything. It would certainly be more comfortable and it would extend the camping season quite a bit for me. I use a cot in my tent to at least get off the ground a little.
@kgirlhart I did a race at possum kingdom a couple of years ago. I would love to go back there and just visit. The trails were really nice. For Sträva users have you found that it shorts the distance with the 'walk' selection? I walked what I know to be right about 3 miles yesterday and it gave me 2.74 and that was after I used the distance correction on the web version. Seems way off for a GPS issue but who knows.
Did this correct itself for you? I was having some issues with the GPS recently too. I didn’t notice it specifically being worse on a walk but my issue seems to have resolved itself so I chalked it up to a satellite problem.
2 -
@tarun_yadavA I feel like my kid would have a similar trip experience right now. We have traveled a fair bit and they used to be really into going to see things, and probably would with us. But, throw them in a big group of teens and you’d be lucky if they left the hotel room!
@eleanorhawkins I was glad to see you are recovered and getting back to it. It’s good you are taking the time to do strength, mobility, etc. I find it so hard to do those things alone. In a class setting I am a lot better. I think I may try out Pilates after this race. Kill multiple birds with one stone and have the responsibility of a class to keep me in line.
@quilteryoyo I would also recommend trying out the full race day routine at the earlier time since you are a late runner typically. It can be a challenge to force yourself to eat hours earlier than you usually do, but you definitely want to be properly fueled on race day!

Catch up post. I went camping with my parents this past weekend, at the beginning of this major cold front all my TX crew have been experiencing. I now have a new lowest camping temp, 29 F. I was fine in the tent. I have a good sleeping setup and know how to layer. But, I was glad for my parents RV so I had somewhere to eat and sit inside from time to time. It was pouring rain on my drive to the park but luckily it stopped right before I got there. I figured the trails would be pretty wet and muddy the next morning, so I stuck to the road. Like others above said, cold or wet is fine, but cold and wet is miserable and I really didn’t want wet feet at those temps. I went out for a proper trail run the next day. It was hard. Probably a combo of being tired and the trail being taxing. I forgot how much more work running on a real trail is. Lots of root dodging, watching your feet, and this trail had loads of elevation change. I saved a short run for the treadmill after I got home because the rain was coming back in and I wanted to break down camp before that started.
All in all, a successful camping trip. And it was nice to see my parents. It had been almost a year. They are plotting out a course into New Mexico then north to the Dakotas to begin around January so we will likely see them one more time as they head through south TX at the start of their trip.
Camping pics6 -
@martaindale cool pics and great that you got to see them! Our motorhome has heating but we have yet to try it. Autumn weather seems to finally be arriving so maybe soon we'll need to. Pilates sounds like a great idea, ALL the core work 😂
Our club is currently making plans for next year, some of which sound kinda brutal, so I think keeping up my strength work is going to be vital!
Talking of weather... I woke up this morning to see that the weather forecast had been right for once and we had had some rain overnight. My plan for today was 2-3 hours run-walk in the mountains, but I couldn't even see the mountain so decided going up there alone would be a bad idea. Looking at schedules I realised getting this month's HM distance in was going to be complicated, so I decided today was the day to get that done. I had to be a bit creative with the route and include some roads, but it was mostly easy trails and it even drizzled for a while, which to me is heaven! Trouble was, I've stuffed my face with so much food recently (apparently my mouth didn't get the memo about the 34km race only happening once and has been fueling for one of those a day or something) I've developed an unwanted belly and that combined with the fact that what with taper, race and recovery I haven't been running much made it oh.so.slow and tough. Still, I got it done, think my legs will be angry though.4 -
I got out for 4 miles at 7:00 am this morning. Temp was 34F. I thought about waiting until lunch to run but it's only supposed to be about 5 degrees warmer then and I do so much better just getting out and getting it done than procrastinating later in the day.
Beautiful pictures @martaindale! Sleeping in 29F in a tent sounds a bit chilly. Even if you are off the ground on a cot! Glad you were able to enjoy some time with your parents.3 -
@eleanorhawkins Your experience with post-race weight change is something I am a bit worried about. I have entered the bottomless pit portion of marathon training and I know it will be a big adjustment back to normal after the race week. I'm trying not to stress too much as it's still a couple months away and it's possible this won't be a big deal. My weight loss is recent enough that I remember what it was like losing weight and I am so much happier at this weight. I don't want to gain it back. All the HM training cycles were no big deal. This is the first time I have dealt with such a big shift in my weekly routine, and my routine is comfortable.
@Teresa502 I won't lie and say it wasn't cold, but my tent has a good rain fly that blocked the wind and my body heat would take the edge off the cold. I put clothes, socks, whatever I thought I would need down in my sleeping back the night before and put my cold pajamas under my blanket with me while I watched tv in the evening to warm them up. Putting on clothes that weren't freezing cold helped a lot. And lots of hot hands. Lots and lots of hot hands.3 -
November total: 101.5/200 miles
11/1: 5 miles
11/3: 10 miles
11/5: 16 miles
11/6: 5 miles
11/7: 9.5 miles
11/9: 5 miles
11/10: 11 miles
11/11: 8 miles
11/12: 10 miles
11/13: 7 miles
11/14: 4 miles
11:16: 11 miles
Another marathon tempo workout today. It was about 40 F this morning. That is about my perfect temps for hard level efforts. It's a little cold as you get started but it's cold enough that I never get hot and hot temps affect my runs so much. Paces that require work to maintain at 60 F are a breeze at 40 F. Overall, it was a good run. Still a bit faster than intended, but more consistent today and closer to target. Best part is I felt good through the entire run.3
