In my quest to slowly pick my way across South Carolina, I hit the road yesterday morning, went through a Chik-Fil-A drive-thru for breakfast about an hour into my drive and then stopped in Spartanburg, SC at Croft State Park. It was cloudy and sprinkled rain on me at one point but it was well worth the detour. I stopped again in Columbia SC to make a return and shop at the REI store and get 2 cupcakes at a nearby bakery (lunch) before arriving in Hilton Head around 4:30. Went for a glorious 6 mile walk on the beach this morning.Welcome home @Tarun_yadavA! We want to hear all about South Africa!
I parked near the stables and had to go visit the horses before I left.
View out the back deck of the condo.
Hi @Teresa502
South Africa was great, thank you!
Did a fair bit of everything. Safaris - saw lionesses and elephants in the wild. Visited a hippo sanctuary. Got to stroke and feed one!
Did a bit of urban geography sightseeing too. I loved Johannesburg. Visited museums, caught the train, saw the polished rich areas, some impoverished black 'townships' (ghettos), drank at a swanky rooftop bar, met an old friend and went drinking/experienced the nightlife, went to a boho chic neighborhood the next day to eat at food trucks, live music, cocktails. Loved it. I'm no Bourdain, but loved his approach to city sightseeing and basing it around food and drink and human geography.
Cape Town - picturesque. Ran there. Went up Table Mountain, climbed to the top of Lions Head peak, went cage shark diving. Loved it!!
Some pics ->Lioness in the wild
Up close with an elephant
This line from 'Bridges of Madison County', when Clint Eastwood talks about Africa. 'The colours between day and dusk... the interactions between man and beast; beast and beast'. Totally got it.
Me feeding Jessica The Hippo
Hoedspruit - Blyde River Canyon
Johannesburg... Rooftop bar
Johannesburg... Apartheid museum
Local brewery
Neighborhood food market area
South African cuisine - 'Bunny chow'
Cape Town - V&A Waterfront with Table Mountain in the background
Cape Town - Lions Head peak
Me at the top, inappropriately dressed, wearing Levis and a RL tee 🤦
Cage shark diving
Cape town - table mountain under clouds
Cape Town Gin distillery
My favourite, and went onto drink 3 more of them haha

those are amazing pics Tarun. I esp like the one with the clouds LOOMING over the harbor Cape Town. It looks like a scene from that new pre Hobbit series. WOW! and you and your son look so happy.2

@tarun_yadavA - love the pictures of So. Africa!! So awesome! I take it you didn't go run with the giraffes or gazelles? 😁
My daughter spent a summer in Kenya in a remote village near the border with Uganda. They hiked all over the place and saw themes amazing wildlife. She also went a couple of years later to Johannesburg for a 2 year program at the University of Kwazulu Natal but they had some issues and cancelled the international program so she really didn't get to see or do much there.
It really is amazing the different KitKat bars you can find in different countries! I always look for them when I travel too!
I love that you got to share it with your family! How did your son like the sharks - I would be terrified!!5 -

@shanaber your daughter's experience sounds amazing! I wish I did a semester abroad or two when I was younger!
As for the sharks... Amazing experience. 3M length Copper sharks! No Great whites unfortunately. They do frequent those waters. Speaking of- so so cold.4 -
@tarun_yadavA That looks like a really amazing trip! Great pictures!!3

@shanaber no worries on the run the world because I haven't put my miles in for a few months so we probably have another 500 or so I will add whenever I quit being so lazy.... LOL
11/1 5.01 Cum 5.01
11/2 4.15 Cum 9.16
11/3 2.01 Cum 11.17

todays' run was a MONDAY. I don't know why but not very motivated. MUGGY and almost 80 and really an hour later so not as dark but it was threatening to rain the entire time and dripping quite a bit. Sunday's run was really nice.

I ran 9 miles this morning. This is the longest run I have had all year! I want to run an unofficial half marathon this month so I’m trying to work my way up to it. I had a half cup of coffee before I headed out, half a gu at 3 miles and the other half at 6 miles.
@eleanorhawkins and @martaindale – I too have the Camino on my bucket list. One day!
@martaindale – I usually am a get in the car and go until you get there type person also. My family traveled a lot when I was young but we didn’t stop anywhere unless we needed gas. Mom would pack a cooler and we would eat whatever was in it. Of course this was way before there was a McDonalds at every exit so we really didn’t have a choice. This time however I was traveling alone and I remembered @7lenny7 and @skippygirlsmom writing about stopping for a run to break up their drives and I just decided I would enjoy the journey AND the destination! BTW, kudos to you and all the other parents out there loving their kids and just trying to do the best job they can.
@shanaber – Sorry your aren’t feeling well. I totally missed that the NY Marathon was this weekend. Yes, @SummerSkier we must get across the ocean and back to Europe!
@Fit2btied2016 – Definitely not ready for snow to be flying through the air or hitting the ground!
@Tarun_YadavA – Your trip looks and sounds fabulous – all except the cage shark diving. I could skip that part!

@tarun_yadavA That trip looks and sounds awesome! And, I agree that you and your son look so happy. Great times together with family and memories he'll never forget.
@SummerSkier It's good to know that we aren't going to sink in the ocean. Thanks for saving us. Sorry today's run was a MONDAY run. Hopefully tomorrow's will be better for you.
@Teresa502 Congrats on your longest run this year. You can get that unofficial HM distance this month!
I dropped Tippy off at the vet and then worked at the daycare from 8:45 - 4:00. I sort of floated from class to class - helping where needed. I was actually surprised that the kids weren't horrible, considering it is Monday after the time change and there's a full moon. Overall, it wasn't a hard day at work.
I ran a couple of errands and then picked Tippy up from the vet. They said she is stable, with her thyroid and arthritis, so to keep doing what I am doing. She was excited to get in the car and had to tell me all about her day! LOL She rarely "talks," so I assume she really wants me to know something when she does.
We got home at 5:20. I went out and walked two miles on the driveway. It was getting pretty dark by the time I was done. I don't like it getting dark so early! My Avg HR was 116 and max was 131. Guess that almost qualifies for a recovery run.
That makes 14.4/70 miles for the month.5 -
Yea @SummerSkier! I wasn't looking forward to sinking in the cold, cold Atlantic!!
I got for a wonderful Rain Run in today!! Well, it was just barely drizzling when Hobbes and I headed out and he was so anxious/excited to go even though it had been raining for a while and was very wet. Weather app said no rain for at least an hour so the plan was to get our little neighborhood warmup in and run to the trail and back. The app lied and we got soaked. 💦 😅💦 It started pouring just as we were getting to the trail and it was blowing right in my face. I decided since we were already wet we might as well just keep going. Not too much later the rain stopped and the sun came out for just a bit before the rain started again. I stopped at one point to respond to a text from my husband and when we started running again I heard a coyote growling. It was up in the bushes behind a bench we sometimes stop at. All the hair went up on Hobbes' back and it scared the crap out of me. There was literally no one else on the trail at the time. Actually I pretty much had the trail all to myself (and the coyote) the entire run and all the parked cars were off the neighborhood streets for the street sweeper so we could run there instead of on the sidewalks. Score!! All in all it was a good run. Some of the usual niggles but none of the awful achiness I have had for the last week+. Yea!
My HR was also better today... Well - Strava kept saying it was really high but when I looked at it with the HR App on my watch it was fine. I honestly thought Strava got it from the same place but now I am not so sure... I also tightened my watch really tight and from that point on the HR in Strava was normal for me on a run... 🤷🏻♀️

November Goal: 100 Miles
11/1: 5.26 miles
11/2: 5.26 miles
11/4: 5.55 miles
11/6: 11.15 miles
11/7: 2.11 miles
29.33/100 miles completed for November
I ran 2 miles this morning. November is a mile a day streak month for Run the Edge. I have been counting walking and thought about walking a mile today after yoga. But it was 49°F which is a little chilly for walking, but perfect for running. So I ran to the park and back. It was nice too because it wasn't dark.
What an awesome trip @tarun_yadavA!
@teresa502 My Dad grew up in SC. It's really pretty there.
When my son came home from spending a year living in Japan he brought us saki flavored Kit-Kats.

@Teresa502 well done on getting the 9 in!1

@kgirlhart - how was the Sake KitKats?
I've tried Green Tea KitKats - not a fan! Lol1 -
Morning all. Same again!5

Wow @shanaber coming that close to a coyote sounds scary. We have a lot of them around here too, but I have never been growled at. I know that would scare the crap out of me! Glad you and Hobbes made it out of there!
@Fit2btied2016 just want to give you BIG virtual hugs! That's all I'll say.
@kgirlhart Nope to the Sake KitKats.
6.2 miles this morning. 70F / 94% humidity felt like running in tomato soup! It was a struggle. But by the end of the week it is going to be in the 30s. Gotta love Texas.
Someone asked about going for a BQ for my marathon, and I just shrugged it off thinking that wasn't even in the realm of possiblilty. But then I got curious and looked it up. Turns out it isn't totally out of the question since I am such an old fart. I would just have to run :20/mi faster than I did on Saturday. In a race atmosphere and with fresh tapered legs, it isn't impossible.

He used to run, a couple of years ago. He was outside with his buddies one day, all were dressed to run. As I came by, I said, "let's move it, we have 13.1 miles to go!"
Neighbor: "Nah, we're good! We are just getting our life together here!"
They did end up running, maybe a mile in the neighborhood behind me.
Two weeks ago, I told him to get out here and run, that his new GSD, Bear, would love it.

08.11 Tue 12°C 6.0km 48min 8:07/km
total: 33.05/80.5km (11.5km ahead)
Phew, what a day! Cycled 45km today. Ok, lets be honest: 11km with a super heavy, uncomfortable granny bike at heavy wind, the rest (majority) with a sporty e-bike because it just didn't work. And then ran in the evening, still with strong wind. Am on vacation. This was my first 'resting' day. Yesterday I drove here, with lots of stops along the way for a bit of sightseeing. Will have another quiet day on this island tomorrow, then leave the day after to another location. I somehow hope to get a long run in this weekend, but not sure if this will work.6 -
November total: 45.5/200 miles
11/1: 5 miles
11/3: 10 miles
11/5: 16 miles
11/6: 5 miles
11/7: 9.5 miles
This was supposed to be speed work. 1.5 mile repeats at HM pace. It was my first post-work run since daylight savings and it was dark so early I kept thinking it was even later. Mentally, that was making me want to quit and my legs felt like total lead so made an executive decision during my warm up to convert the workout and just run the mileage. I was barely faster than my recovery pace and I know I made the right call. My legs would not have been capable of finding HM race pace. Oh well, time on feet is more important than speed work for me. The goal is finishing upright with a smile.6 -
@Scott6255 It would be super cool to BQ. I hope conditions and race day magic converge and make that happen for you. You've certainly put the work in!6
-
Re: flavored kit-kats. My husband used to get this snack box delivered to the house that had different snacks from around the world. We've had a few different kit-kats. Most were fine but nothing special. Matcha was gross. These chocolate covered strawberry flavores ones were delicious!5

Did anyone watch the lunar eclipse this morning? I got up at 4:00 am to watch. It was pretty neat. After coffee and a little work, I did a body weight workout video and headed out for an easy 2 mile run. With my cooldown walk and a walk on the beach I ended up walking 3.80 miles today. I signed up for a kayak excursion for this morning. It's started to get windy here in HHI from the hurricane coming up the coast. There were 8 people who showed up for the kayaking but 6 chickened out when they heard how rough the water would be with the 20mph winds and the full moon tide. That left 2 of us and the guide. We had a great time but it was tough going out. If you stopped paddling you immediately started floating backwards. Great 2-hour upper body workout! After laying on the beach for a little while, I drug the bike out and rode it until dark (9 miles).
@quilteryoyo - Glad Tippy got a good report and I love that she was telling you all about her day!
@martaindale - This getting dark so early plays with my head also. I'm ready for bed by 7:00 thinking it has to be at least 9:00!
Glad you are feeling better @shanaber but that growling coyote sounds pretty scary to me too! Glad you and Hobbes made it out safely!2 -
Sounds like a great run @shanaber , except for the coyote experience. That would have scared the crap out of me too and I would have kept looking back over my shoulder to make sure it wasn't following me. Glad you got the HR issue figured out.
I think you are doing great @tarun_yadavA ! Hopefully they will feel easier for you soon.
@Scott6255 Wow. Sounds like BQ is possible, if that is something you want to aim for. I knew you were speedy!
Great running @AlphaHowls and nice job on encouraging your neighbor to run too. Sorry your back is still bothering you. Hope that calms down soon.
@yirara Enjoy you trip and do what you can. Don't stress about it and ruin your vacation.
@martaindale Some days, you just do what you can do. Time on your feet is important and I love your race goals.
@Teresa502 That kayaking experience sounds like really hard work, but fun. You are getting so much exercise in while you are there! I hope the hurricane doesn't hit before you leave.
I got up early this morning and got a 2 mile run in on the driveway (and 0.95 mile walk total for warm up and cool down) before heading out for work. It was chilly, at 47°F, but sunny and I still wound up sweating plenty. I physically could have gone further, but, as it was, I barely made it to work on time.5 -

It was hot and humid this morning. 70°F with 97% humidity and the dew point was 68°. It was not pleasant running weather, but it was still a pretty good run. I ran 5 miles and it was starting to get light when I got home.
I guess I am a bit of an airhead. I didn't realize that there was a lunar eclipse. I was hoping the moon would be pretty since it was a full moon. But it was pretty cloudy. I could see the moon through the clouds and kept thinking that it looked like an eclipse. Then I saw @summerskier talking about seeing it and realized that it looked like an eclipse because it was an eclipse. 😳
@tarun_yadavA I didn't really care for the sake Kit-Kats.
6 -
Morning all.
Upto 9K again on daily runs. Speed starting to push in right direction. No aches or pains to report 🤞6 -
@tarun_yadavA I would kill for your slow to even be my race pace lol.
I ventured up 'my' mountain this morning, the first time I'd dared to get up off the roads since the fire. I stuck to the wide trails as the small ones looked pretty treacherous, there have been a lot of landslides and stuff up there since the fire and I was on my own so playing very safe. It was heartbreaking to see the devastation up close, especially as they seem to be chopping down a lot of the burnt trees (I guess hope they know wth they're doing!).
However, there are signs of life... a few little green plants sprouting up, tonnes of wasps (grrrr), a few butterflies, and most excitingly 6 deer crossed the trail about 10 feet away. I stopped and stood watching them for a while, they kept an eye on me but didn't seem bothered at all by my presence. Lucky, as there were 3 youngsters and a male with decent-sized antlers! It's mating season atm and there've been reports of bucks attacking dogs, so I was a little wary and watched him carefully for signs of aggression but got the impression that as long as I didn't move towards them they were far more interested in grazing.
Think my quads will have a lot to say tomorrow!5 -
hahaha @kgirlhart. If it looks like an eclipse...... Nice job getting that run in.
Glad your speed is picking up @tarun_yadavA . I had no doubt.
@eleanorhawkins Yeah for getting up on "your" mountain again. Glad you were super extra cautious too. Also very glad the deer ignored you for the most part. Nature is amazing in her ability to make a quick comeback after a devastating fire.3 -
@tarun_yadavA nice running. I think your restful vacation gave you the rest your body was needing.
@eleanorhawkins I'm sure it is hard to see all that devestation on your mountain. But like @quilteryoyo said, Mother Nature is amazing what she can do to bring life back.
7 miles this morning. Same weather as yesterday, but humidity felt worse. Everything was wet, yet it hadn't rained since Monday. Did a threshold run after a 1 mile warm up. It didn't feel like I was gonna die, despite the terrible weather conditions.
