We don't do a lot of social gifting now, but that wasn't always the case. There was a time when we had lots of people we wanted to give to at Christmas. We tried a lot of solutions, including trays of cookies.
The best received gift was Lindor truffles, and we gave those for a number of years. We waited for their big sale and bought them in bulk, put them in little mesh bags of 8-10 truffles, and gave to anybody we wanted to as the season progressed. I usually bought 300 truffles - but the price has gone up, currently around $80 - and the little mesh bags are under $20. So even now with the higher prices, for around $100 I could give at least 30 small gifts. It's still food, but somehow the little chocolates were a huge hit vs the trays of cookies. And less work. And didn't go stale or need to be frozen. People would ooh and aah when we handed them a little bag. I kept them in a big container near the front door so they were handy, and took some with me when I went somewhere I might run into people I wanted to give a little something to. We don't have that many people to gift to anymore, so we stopped doing it a few years ago. Now that we are moving to a senior community, though, I can see where we might want to start it back up again.4 -

That's more or less what I did with my work colleagues at my previous location.
I bought a couple of these, put 3 or 4 balls in each little baggie, and kept whatever was left over.
$20 plus a couple dollars for baggies and all my food giving was done and dusted.

Another thought on food is this ...
Elsewhere in these forums, people complain that they work in offices where co-workers bring in baked goods all the time, and they either feel pressured to eat the baked goods or they feel very tempted by the baked goods and succumb to temptation. This causes them to eat more calories than they would like.
So we (several of us in different posts over the years) try to help by offering these suggestions:
1. The baked goods aren't yours. You wouldn't go into the fridge and grab someone else's lunch, in the same way leave the baked goods alone. They belong to someone else.
2. You don't know the condition of the kitchen in which those baked goods were made. The kitchen might have been pristine clean ... hopefully it was. But maybe the person who baked the goods doesn't have the same level of hygiene as you do. Imagine if the person let their dog lick their hands and then the person made the food. Would you still want to eat it? Or is it less tempting now?
3. You don't know what's in the food. That might be OK if you're not allergic or sensitive to anything, but many people are, and people put all sorts of ingredients in things.
With those thoughts in mind, I rarely eat homemade things at events or in the office anymore unless I feel pretty confident about the person who made them. I tend to go for the catered food or commercial food.
So those Lindt chocolates are a great choice because they're individually wrapped and commercially produced.
***Note: I am definitely NOT suggesting anyone here has a kitchen that is less than pristine!!***6 -
30 Days of Gratitude
1. Smell - freshly cut grass on our lawn.
2. Technology - the amazing advancements in medical technology.
3. Colour - blue. Beautiful blue sky peaking through the clouds.
4. Food - soup. That's what I've been eating just recently because there's less chewing. We always keep a few cans of soup on hand for situations like these.
5. Sound - my music. I've recently acquired a number of nature sounds CDs with music playing along with sounds of ocean waves, birds, and so on. Lovely.
6. Nature - I love nature. It would be incredibly difficult for me to pick just one thing. I am so grateful that there is nature and that I can enjoy it.
7. Memory - Winter 2017. The last time I visited my parents and a wonderful 1-month holiday to Canada that June/July. My husband and I did two cycling events and a lot of other cycling. We climbed mountains and explored a glacier. We visited friends and family.
Memories:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka-bb/albums/72157682899188730
8. Book - Norman Doidge's The Brain's Way of Healing. I found it inspirational!
https://www.normandoidge.com/?page_id=1042
9. Place - home. I've moved and travelled a lot and home is wherever I happen to feel really comfortable. Right now, home is a certain house here in Tasmania where I can go and just be myself (mostly, for even a little while). Home is where I can lie down on the sofa and doze off when I've had a rough day, like I did yesterday.
10. Taste - salt. My favourite taste. On the one hand I need salt because of my exercise and medications, on the other hand I need to reduce my salt because of my kidneys. But given the choice, I'll usually go salty over sweet ... or maybe salty and sweet!
11. Holiday - Christmas!!!!
12. Texture - smoothness. I like smooth clothes, smooth sheets, Rhody's smooth fur ...
13. Abilities - I don't really think of myself in terms of having abilities. I've sort of thought of myself as "the jack of all trades, master of none". However, organisation is one that I've been thankful for throughout my life.
14. Sight - the beauty all around. In our yard, where we go cycling, where I work, and travelling around this island.
15. Season - I like the seasons in the following order from best to worst: Summer, Autumn ............ Spring ................... Winter.
16. What about your body are you grateful for? Healing ... that it heals. Mostly anyway, and perhaps imperfectly, but healing does take place.

I've now got a pretty good idea how I'm spending Christmas. I chatted with my skin cancer specialist today about the recovery process.
Mid-December, I go for an 'Excision Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Nose and Bilobe Flap Reconstruction' plus a large chunk out of my right hip.
Because of the size of the bandaging, it will likely be difficult for me to wear my glasses which limits what I can do. My stitches should come out after 7 days, and then the bandaging shouldn't be as bulky.
Also, for the first week, I am to keep my head up a bit and relatively still. I'm not to bend forward or lift anything or do any exercise that might raise my heart rate.
In the second week, I can ease into a little bit of exercise but I'm still to limit bending forward, lifting things, or doing exercise that might raise my heart rate much.
By the third week, I might be able to go for walks and short bicycle rides.
So, the Christmas period will be spent sitting in my chair or lying in bed with my head up. I bought another neck pillow so that I've got some variety.
Without my glasses, what I can do will be limited, but I can read and colour without my glasses. So I've purchased a few more books, some more of my colouring pens and a couple Christmas colouring books.
Not looking forward to the nose reconstruction. I like my nose as it is! But the rest sounds good.

Machka - That all sounds horrific! You are approaching all this with a great deal of fortitude.
Pleased with myself this morning. I got right back into it after a good night's sleep.
Exercise machines this morning, plus mat work and weights.
Then back to the writing. Mainly I was copying out a couple of poems, with a short commentary. One was a poem about my grandmother, when she became very frail and took a great deal out of my mother. It made me realise where I got my fear of getting old and incapable from. I hated witnessing what it did to my mother. Love and hate have always been very close together in my family.
The poem was published in a magazine.
Lying low and catching up today. Sunday we have my husband's sister and her boyfriend coming for the night and it is also our 18th wedding anniversary. Time flies!!! I've been ordering different bits of painting equipment for DH'S present, which will arrive today.
I also need to send flowers to my brother's wife for her birthday next week. Want to get them there early as they are going off to Rome the day after. It's also their 25th anniversary.
Tomorrow I have a pottery lesson in the evening.

Hello, all...
Machka - you are a trooper. I'd be in the fetal position crying my eyes out with all that coming up. Can you post on the computer without your glasses? Hope they are giving you some seriously stout pain medication to get you through the healing.
Debbie - Hope your healing is quick and easy.
Heather - Your life never slows down! I was just telling Corey last night how pleased I was that there is nothing on my calendar 'til mid-January.
Cor's in the shower - we'll be leaving at 7:30 a.m. to drive north. I'm glad our path doesn't go over any of the big bridges, as it's only 26F, and everything's frosted. The big river bridges are my only worries - and in all honesty, they're really good about keeping them sanded and salted here when it's freezing.
I get so tired so quickly these days, but perhaps this time, we can stop at a Whole Foods. There isn't one available down here, and I really do love browsing a good grocery store.
Hope it's a good day for all...
Love y'all,

Grocery run completed and groceries stowed away. We also went to our local outdoor market and bought some really fresh veg. We’ve been dissatisfied with the quality in our local supermarket recently.
Heather: I always find it difficult to get back to routine after holidays. I did enjoy your travelogue.
Machka: I hope all goes well with the surgery. DH has had that done. They took the graft skin from his thigh. I like the idea of Lindor truffles as gifts.
Gifts: We give small gifts to older family members, and larger, more personal gifts to daughters. The grands get a small gift, and some money to treat themselves. I exchange small gifts with one friend. We don’t give gifts to tradesmen.

13. abilities. I find it invaluable to be able to concentrate and focus on the positive, and use my analytical acumen. I can bring it to bear in finding the positive in unhelpful events. Learn from experience, so to speak.
14. sight. Literally grateful for my sight. I only have good sight in one eye due to a birth defect in the optical nerve in my left eye. I don’t miss what I never had, but am super aware of the importance of my one good eye.

Rosemarie I am feeding DrewB a raw diet now. It is a balanced and species appropriate diet. Vets are like doctors who have little nutritional training unless they pursue it. They rely on the big food companies who come into their office and promote their wares. I found it interesting that when many of DrewB's numbers showed improvement and I said I changed her diet he did not ask what diet I am using. Her weight is perfect for her size 12.2 pounds. Being the right weight helps with her autoimmune and her leg issues. I also believe the leg and autoimmune are related. Both are caused by inflammation in the body. He also said she continues to have a slight heart murmur. He took the reading right after they took blood. I could tell very stressful for her especially since they took it from her foot. She was very brave. I did comment on this but he said nothing. I have been looking into finding another vet. It is like looking for a doctor. The medical system is swamped. The vet I wanted to see is not taking any new patients. Hence that is why I am looking outside the box.
As I wrote inflammation is the root cause for DrewB issues. I realize this is the root cause for some of my issues. I carry too much weight around my middle and I have 10-20 pounds of excess weight. Learning what helps DrewB makes me stop and think what can I do to reduce unhealthy inflammation in me. Inflammation is healthy if you have a physical wound that needs healing.
What I can do to reduce unhealthy inflammation:
1. See through my denial when I make a poor choice
2. Give myself space when confronted by an unhealthy situation. I am not just talking about the recent situation with my husband.
3. Create space in my life and home so I can be open to a more healthy life style.
4. Find win win solutions to a problem.
5. Add foods that support my body like home made bone broth, green veggies, good quality meats.
6. Add movement and stretches I enjoy when I can
7. Add interesting conversation with friends and family i.e. political free zone
8. Listen to my body and give it rest when needed. As part of this call for rest I will continue to find ways to calm myself so that my rest is truly restorative.
9. Question products I use on me and our home to make sure they are not adding toxins to my environment.
Terri I give out Thank you Target cards to Tradesman. I appreciate that they do the work I am not able to do.2 -
Good morning!
Hubby forgot the chai when he first went out, but nailed it later in the afternoon, and it was a real treat. He heated up a gf shepherd's pie for dinner, and that was delicious. And bought me two large bottles of Smart water, so he gets high marks for yesterday.
16 yr old is missing me, so we watched a movie together last night, both in masks, me on the couch, while he stood up in the corner of the room. Hubby scolded us, but I guess a boy needs his mama, and it was a fantastic movie which we both enjoyed a lot. "The Outfit" streaming on prime. Rated R for violence and language, but for psychological thriller, it reminded me of movies 50 years ago. The pacing was delightful and the suspense was not overwhelming.
I had a dream about you, Lisa. I think it's the first time I've ever dreamed about any of you. It was quite strange and illogical, and we still weren't in person. Too bizarre really to wrap my head around. Maybe it's the Covid.
Getting ready to take my 4th dose of paxlovid. Two of five days complete. I still feel sick and have symptoms, but I am breathing much better, literally. Still a little nasal congestion.
My kitty has been with me during all of this, except when she leaves to eat, potty, or drink. She's been such a comfort. She's usually curled up tight next to me, or on the top of the couch by the open window, enjoying the fresh air and view of the neighborhood.
Take care.

However I also feel sad that no one really read my post and understood I was celebrating getting the cookie giving controlled a bit so it would be more fun, more appropriate. Instead there was a lot of negative talk about giving baked goods, and even making any homemade food to share.
This is not the first time lately I have felt sad about my interactions here. We have talked about less sharing for reasons of privacy but I am going to do much less sharing as I am feeling that we are losing our attitude of support of one another, and are feeling too comfortable in negative judging.

Christmas gifts I just ran across a nice Christmas card I received from a favorite engineers I once worked with. Shirley was a true minimalist. She never gave any "obligatory" gifts but smiled and always had a hearty "thank you" if someone gave her a gift. She probably re-gifted it immediately, lol. She made Marie Kondo look like a hoarder.
I give gift cards to the mail carrier and my cleaner. Mail carrier is great about getting out of her vehicle, no matter what the weather, and depositing packages on my porch. Plus she has a great smile and is a fun person. Much like my cleaner
Vicki - hope your back is feeling better. I think Chiropractors can be helpful.
Margaret - I really like your list of strategies to reduce inflammation. So glad to hear Drew is improving in some areas. You are a great mom to her.
Rosemarie - according to my Kill A Watt experiment, I doubt your LED light costs even a dollar per month. Back when I was working, my health plan paid for an eye exam and new lenses each year, and new frames every 2 years. I took advantage of it. I found a couple more pairs of glasses in my car - the storage compartments for glasses on the ceiling above the dashboard! I hadn't worm THEM for years, lol. I'm going to cancel the order for new frames and they can put new lenses in these. I think I'll be fine and if any allergy stuff - I'll try the clear nail polish.
Flea - so happy to hear your DH has been stepping up in the care department. Your companion kitty is such a joy. We look forward to your updates and are happy you are doing well.
I managed to get the wood all put away yesterday. Everyplace stuffed to the gills. Greenhouse, woodshed, potting shed, office near heater where kitty hangs out.
Planning a walk with my neighbor this morning. She had skin cancer surgery on Monday, a little spot beneath her left eye - she said he removed a lot more skin than she expected and she's a mess. We'll see.
Make it a good day!

Up early and balanced our checkbook to the penny.👍🏻😁. That always makes me feel accomplished. Probably going grocery shopping, as we are low on a couple things.
Our heater seems to have a mind of its own but she turns on. Except at night though for some reason, but the wall thermostat doesn't have any specifics logged in, just to keep the house at 66' which its not doing. By the time we get up, the downstairs is 60', and our poor propane fireplace on the first floor has been "trying" to pick up the slack. We just got propane delivered this month running $188, and the tank shows it down to 75%. So this hiccup is costing us money. The owner of the management company answered his email finally so a tech is coming on Thursday.
This Friday is my youngest sailors 24th birthday. Last time I saw the kid he was 20, so its strange. I can't post a note on Facebook because he doesn't go on Facebook and I am not his friend anymore. I did send a birthday card with his Christmas box, so there's acknowledgment.💖👍🏻 I suppose I could post something, even if he doesn't see it.

When is he due for leave, Rebecca? I certainly hope he visits you and apologizes for his lack of communication. Your oldest son though. . . He is so precious and attentive, and your middle son keeps you updated on that darling granddaughter, so you raised them right.
I hope the heat situation gets straightened out.2 -
Kim-I did read your post. I applaud you for having that tough conversation with your mom. I don't think anyone intended to make you feel badly. We are just all here for various health reasons and sweets are hard to resist, so our brains go right to "how can I avoid this very thing over the holidays." I am sure your mom feels that by giving them, people will always remember her fondly over the holidays, so cutting down must be difficult.
I cook a lot for my family and I don't think they really enjoy it, but are afraid to say so. So, after my recent trip with them to Phoenix, I decided I am not making food for them anymore. They are all just too picky (in my opinion) and stuck in their ways--for better or worse. Less work (it's exhausting) for me and they can eat however they want and not feel obligated to compliment my "talent." It's disappointing because cooking is my hobby and others I share with love it.

All the best on the biopsies. Having just gone through that part, I don't envy you!
M in Oz
After what you talked about/what you went through with yours, I didn't sleep well last night.
Got there and he decided to just do two spots instead of four so he could stitch them. Not enough room to do four and stitch them the way he would like. The numbing shot was all I felt and it wasn't very bad at all. I am sure when that wears off that it will start hurting but, at least for now, it is not bad. Will take it easy for the evening. Go back Monday to get the stitches out.
I'm glad it went well.
I got two very painful numbing shots in my nose with mine. The first went in quite high up and WOW did that hurt. The second wasn't quite as bad. Once they took it was OK.
I got my stitches out after a week.
I think one of the worst parts was that my whole nose swelled up, and I wear glasses so I had headaches every day for the first week or 10 days.
Also the spot has taken ages to heal but that isn't surprising given that it is cancer and that is one of the symptoms. Same with my hip biopsy.
But my third biopsy which was the biggest one was not cancer and it is just about healed.
M in Oz
I am sorry and hope they get it all removed soon so you can totally heal.
I had the two numbing shots- first one I felt but barely anything with the second.
No swelling at all (I wear glasses too).
He did the whole thing with my mask on, just moved it under my nose and some gauze around so they didn't get blood on my mask. Thirty minutes instead of forty-five beings they just did the two spots and not the four.
This morning it hurts a little when I am up but not too bad.
I haven't taken the bandage off yet so haven't seen it. I will this evening when I change it.
I can take a shower tonight(couldn't last night)- just have to gently let the water run on it and pat dry. No rubbing

My mom went on a very strict anti-inflammitory diet- I don't remember all of it but there was so much she wasn't supposed to eat-
No grains, no night shade vegetables(tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant,...) no caffeine
There was more but I can't remember right now.
She did loose quite a bit of weight. Actually lost too much, getting 20lbs under what her doctor said was an ideal weight for her.
She is still careful about what she is eating but not so super strict like she was.
She isn't sure if the weight loss helped with the pain in her knees or the food choices or the fact that it was summer time and she has more pain in the winter. She isn't going to that specialest anymore(her new insurance doesn't cover it plus it is an hour away and was going twice a week)
She wanted to try everything before going in for surgery- she still hasn't agreed to surgery but knows she will be better after it.

So sorry you feel that way. I read your post and was great how you managed to negotiate the change in baking cookies. I always enjoyed getting cookie trays ;still do)but never baked to give away. I’m not the best cookie maker and always seem to get too busy to bake. Now, I am gluten and egg free so eating the cookies I do get from campers can cause major stomach issues for me (though I will eat them anyway!😉)
As far as tipping/ gifting service providers, I never did much of that, usually just gave lottery scratch tickets. Now, I’m not in a financial place where I could do any extra giving. Also, living in a campground, only the employees here and they never have exchanged gifts.
So holidays here, I get depressed thinking about the “old” days when my kids were young and we had big family gatherings. I never felt like I belonged but enjoyed watching the interactions between relatives and enjoying the kids.
