@tarun_yadavA Great rainy run this morning. You're pace is impressive.
@eleanorhawkins You are not a terrible runner in my book. I'm sorry that you were that scared and unable to finish your planned route. I think you are making progress though. Wasn't it just a few months ago, after your fall, that you could barely go on a steep trail at all? The dog story is very cute. Glad the donkeys cheered you on. Happy Birthday to your dad tomorrow. I didn't realize it had been 2 years since his surgery. My, time has flown!2 -

@quilteryoyo thanks. Yes, it was. I thought I was over it, but apparently not. Time has flown! He's grumpy because I sent him a card and chocolates and his wife confiscated the chocolates 😂3

@kgirlhart Great job running the year!!!2
-
5 treadmill miles this evening. I realized after my marathon that I was only 37 miles away from 1600 running miles for the year. So I changed my monthly goal to hit 1600 by December 31.

@eleanorhawkins I think you should give yourself a bit of a break, if you can. That sounded like a really steep trail, so I can understand why the fear would raise it's head again. You'll get there. Maybe go with someone else next time. Do you think that would help? I feel bad for your dad not getting the chocolates. Bless him.
You are doing great @Scott6255 . You can get those 37 miles. Awesome amount of running.
Mom and I delivered a Christmas gift to my cousin in assisted living today and then did a little more shopping. After I got home, ate, and let the food settle, I went down for a treadmill session. I wasn't sure what I would be able to do, so just went with how I felt. My breathing wasn't the best today. I think I've been having more PVC's and PAC's lately (premature heart beats). It's not dangerous, just aggravating and makes it hard to breath. I did better than I expected and ran 2.25 miles in 30:17 minutes (4.46 mph) and walked a total of 1.25 miles for warm up and cool down. Brings my monthly total to 43.21/70 mile goal.5 -
Well it looks like I’m a little late to the party for December so I’m going to set my goal at 40 miles till the end of the month

Good morning everyone 🙂
Got in another 9K!
How's everyone doing? Not long for Christmas!
Gonna keep on top of running over next 11 days, but eating is starting to get a little naughty now...6 -
I met a friend for 5 miles this morning. I was on the struggle bus but we got it done. Trying to get outside for as many runs as possible before the weather turns really ugly at the end of the week.
@martaindale - I'm with you on dressing warmer than @kgirlhart - I don't know how she does it!
@eleanorhawkins - Was it fear or common sense kicking in? You were alone on the side of a mountain with a steep and sharp drop off. You made a decision that kept you from serious injury. You re-routed and completed your half marathon mileage. Pat yourself on the back woman! You are a bada$$ and don't let that tiny inner voice tell you any different!6 -
I don't really know how should one calculate the total number of kms or miles, as in extremely new to the whole walking/running to lose weight. Should i start small or be ambition? Should I keep it somewhere in the middle? A bit of help from the community would be extremely great!!
I was thinking 20 miles for the last 12 days of December!!1 -
@Teresa502 thank you. Yes, with hindsight, and especially this morning after hearing they just found the body of a hiker who disappeared on the next mountain along from ours on Saturday, I'll accept the common sense kicking in part. I sometimes forget I can't actually be superwoman (if I could fly, those tricky trails wouldn't be a problem!)
Welcome @klosrobert it's never too late!
Welcome @sahibachahalxoxo if you're very new to it all then it's best to start off very very small to avoid overdoing it and hurting yourself or just getting overwhelmed. Much better to start gradually and build up strength.

I agree with @Teresa502. From your description, I wouldn't run that trail either. Hiking it alone even seems a bit dicey. I have never been afraid of heights but as I get older I am more aware of potential injury and death. There are things I did when younger that I would probably not do now.
@sahibachahalxoxo Welcome! Feel free to set a non mileage goal if you are unsure of how many miles you might accumulate. It can be tricky when you first start out to know what is reasonable for you personally. Are you following any specific plan?
@klosrobert Welcome to you too! Love to see some new faces. Are you training for anything specific?2 -
Welcome @klosrobert . Tell us a little bit about yourself and your running goals.
Welcome @sahibachahalxoxo also. Your goal depends on where you are now. You don't want to be too ambitious and push yourself to do too much too fast and get injured. If you are doing a combination of running and walking, 20 miles seems reasonable. Just go out slow and easy and you'll build up the time and speed, if that is what your goal is. Also, don't forget to take a rest day. They are important, especially in the beginning. Hope that helped. If you don't mind, tell us a bit about yourself and your long term goals.
Nice run @tarun_yadavA . Sorry it was a bit harder, but we all have those days. Yes, eating like we should this time of year sort of gets thrown out the window. My plans are all going to depend on what the weather system headed this way really does. Christmas may be spent by the fire with Tippy.
@eleanorhawkins What @Teresa502 said. That's what I was trying to say, just didn't have the right words.
Nice run @Teresa502 . Sorry it was a struggle. Must be going around today. I'm not looking forward to the weather this weekend either.

@eleanorhawkins @martaindale @quilteryoyo to be honest I have a very tumultuous relationship with weight and working out...i work hard and lose the weight then I don't know why but I give in those bad habits again and put it all back...its not like I lose 10kgs in 2 months situation, I would lose it in say 4 months. So even the weight gain is gradually. But the problem lies in the fact that I can see it happening but I'm not doing anything consciously to control it. And then the process of losing weight starts all over again...and its tiring. 😔 so this time I want to focus on creating one habit at a time & be part of a larger community that help each other out and guide one another! This is what I want to do differently.4
-
And hope & pray that this time it'll be permanent!2

Greetings everyone!
My last week consisted of having a fever, watching the Paw Patrol movie and sleeping- in no particular order of preference , while Germany went through a deep freeze of it’s own. Yesterday school was cancelled due to black ice, and today we have all thawed out, so today I decided enough was enough and that I should go on my first post illness run.
I should have waited longer.
I thought if I kept my heart rate in zone 2 under 130 the whole run, what was the harm in that. So I went on a slow flat 8.3 km jog by the river nearby and felt just partially awful. After my run though I have just been feeling progressively worse. Usually running does the opposite for me. So I think I am just going to have to sit out a few more days and maybe go on some walks or hikes instead.
I signed up for a 10k on the 31st at a nearby lake and am hoping I will at least be back to normal by then. But I don’t think I can reach my mileage goal this time and I’m a little bummed about that because it’s the first month I have ever consistently been keeping track .
It is great fun to hear about all your adventures.
@eleanorhawkins I enjoyed reading about your run. I think sometimes going on an unplanned route, or even changing your mind in the go can be part of the adventure. And it’s better to change your plans than to hurt yourself. I have had to change my route a few times in the past and make a rather large detour due to my fear of big and aggressive looking swans. They really make me feel like a wimp, but they can look sooooo mean! I am not proud of this fear and have been working on my intimidation techniques with a mixed success rate so far.

@Fit2btied2016 I hope we will get to see some puppy pictures soon. I am curious .
@AlphaHowls It’s really remarkable that you do your running inside your house. I agree with the boredom assessment. There is always something one can do to not “be bored”. My kids would often beg to differ, at least verbally, but I think that is a standard response. It’s an important skill to learn how to entertain oneself .4 -
@sahibachahalxoxo
Welcome! Thanks for sharing your weight loss goals. In my opinion the keys to long term weight loss are developing routines that are sustainable in the long-term, being able to switch them up to keep things fun and interesting, and being kind to yourself when you deviate from any pre-set plans . Good luck on your journey ! You got this!3 -

That's a question only you can answer.
I always tried to calculate my goal based on how far I planned to run, understanding that life, accidents, and injuries tend to happen.
If you find yourself consistently exceeding your goal, you may want to bump your goal up a bit. If you find yourself consistently falling short of your goal, you may want to cut your goal back a bit.
The true strength of this challenge are the people who participate. Expect their unstinting support -- whether you exceed your goal or fall a little short.
There are participants who are faster and run farther, and there are participants who are slower and don't run as far. You run you, and have fun doing it.

Took a rest day yesterday as it was raining and cold all day. Today, I was having a hard time getting out the door. It was still chilly, windy, and cloudy and my house is warm and comfy. I decided a few weeks ago that I was going to convert my speed workouts to easy runs to avoid overworking my Achilles. Today’s workout would have been about 8.5-9 miles and I just wasn’t in the mood. I settled on a loop a little under 7 miles and allowed myself to walk the steep uphills. Of course, once I got going I was glad to be running. It was a nice easy run, enjoyable.5 -
@sahibachahalxoxo The only way I have found that I can lose and keep it off is with running and counting calories. When I cut down on either one, I tend to inch up in pounds. Sounds like you have a great plan and the people on this thread are very supportive. Good luck with your goals and creating a habit of movement is a great start!
@Laurz9191 I'm glad you felt well enough to try for a run, but it does sounds like a few more days of taking it easy is a good idea. I hope you get back to feeling normal soon.
@martaindale Glad to see that your run was enjoyable and that you chose to walk up the steep hills. You are doing great and sounds like your Achilles agrees.
I just walked one mile on the treadmill this morning. I had visions of walking another when I got home from work, but I just don't have it in me tonight.6 -

Thanks @teresa502, @summerskier,@quilteryoyo, @martaindale, @Tramboman
@teresa502 and @martaindale I really hate being cold. But I also hate being hot and sweaty when I am cold. I also find that it makes a difference if it is dark or sunny when I run. 35° and sunny is warmer to run in than 35° and dark outside.
I had a great run this morning. It was cold at 40°F feels like 35°F. I wore capri length tights with a t-shirt, gloves and 2 pairs of sleeves. I ended taking off one pair of sleeves but kept the other pair and the gloves on. It is going to be colder tomorrow and they are calling for extremely cold temperatures on Thursday and Friday. I ran 6 miles this morning even though I didn't really have time. I am planning to run tomorrow and I don't know about Thursday. It will just depend on how cold it is.
@sahibachahalxoxo Your goal doesn't have to be a mileage goal. You could set a time goal or a number of days per week goal. If you are just starting out running you might consider a Couch to 5K app. I used the one from zen labs and I loved it.
6 -
@kgirlhart thanks for the suggestion! I've downloaded the Couch to 5k app and will be using that. And as you said a number of days per week goals would best suit me at this point rather than miles or hours.
I think I'll start with 3 days a week goal!7 -
Good morning ladies (+Scott !)
How's everyone?
Got a nice 6Miler in! ... And with that, brings up 1600 for the year!
Hope everyone has a great day! (I'm off work now till the New year - hence the lie-in and slightly later run!)5 -
Great running @kgirlhart !
I like your new goal @sahibachahalxoxo ! You are going to do great. Don't forget, if the couch to 5K is too hard one week, there's no shame in repeating the prior week's workouts.
Another excellent run @tarun_yadavA ! Congrats on reaching 1600 miles for the year and enjoy your time off from work!4 -
@quilteryoyo - thank you!!☺️2
-
@quilteryoyo thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind...also I'm proud to say I've completed 2 days of it...one day of walking for 2.5kms..and today I did day 1 of the Couch to 5K...6
-
@sahibachahalxoxo I agree with @Tramboman. He gives sound advice.
@tarun_yadavA awesome yearly mileage milestone! I am actually going for the same 1600 miles this year too 😃
Got in 5 treadmill miles this evening. Just 20 to go.

Thanks @teresa502, @summerskier,@quilteryoyo, @martaindale, @Tramboman
@teresa502 and @martaindale
I ran 5 miles today. It was colder than yesterday, but it was a nice run. I saw 5 deer running across the road by the park. I wore long tights, 2 pair of sleeves, gloves and an earband. I took off one pair of sleeves and by the end I was thinking I would have been ok in capris, but for the most part I was good. I'm still not sure if I will run tomorrow or not. I am planning to. The forecast says 43°F feels like 36° and getting colder. So unless the cold front gets here earlier than expected I will plan to run. But if it is colder than 20° I won't. It is supposed to be 13°F feels like 2° on Friday. Luckily that is my scheduled rest day.
@sahibachahalxoxo That sounds like a great plan.
@Laurz9191 Sounds like you weren't quite ready. I hope you feel better soon. Don't try to rush it, just take care of yourself.

Good morning all.
@Scott6255 - thank you Sir! And you got this! Got plenty of time to nail those last 30-something miles!
Got in a 12K today6
