I loved reading all of your latest posts!
Just finished my New Year’s Eve 10k and it was pretty awesome. I got 150.7 km in for the month so I’m really stoked about meeting that goal. I might give a 10k breakdown later if I find time, but here is the short version. I got in under 53 minutes with a time of 52:55 which was way better than I thought I could do and I got my sausage. You will find a picture below as well as of the lake we ran around. I didn’t see much of the lake as I was busy chasing legs .

@quilteryoyo @SummerSkier @martaindale - thank you for the kind words! 😊
@martaindale - Sarah, you're totally killing it with your December miles. Great prep!!!
@Laurz9191 - well done on a quick 10K! And you got sausage!! Niiiiice. 😊
Ok, if I don't post here again... Hope you lovely ladies (+Scott !) have a great New Year's Eve! Happy New Year, and see you in the Jan 2023 thread!! 😊4 -
OK - I went back and it turns out Apple has a pretty cool way to sort your workouts and give you summaries for each month. I have been lazy logging in our run the world since about July so I went back and added my specific walks . It's interesting to see that I was averaging almost 50 miles a month of outdoor walks until Oct when I started playing tennis again and then it dropped way down. The summary is nice as it provides distance total time pace etc.... I walk slow..... 🥹😁😁 But pace doesn't count and we made it to the finish!!!!!6

@tarun_yadavA - Happy Anniversary! Your wife is beautiful and you make a lovely couple! Congratulations on 16 years!
Like @SummerSkier I have bathrooms mostly available where I run. One pretty much gets inhabited by homeless people (they can look the door) but the one at the other end of the trail is typically available and it has stalls and can't be locked. I also just need to not think about it but when I get home I have to 'run' to pee. My bigger issue is having stomach issues and with IBS it goes good for a while and then it is a thing again.
I have used @juliet3455s race technique in the past as well. It does work as long as you don't try to keep up with someone who really speeds up and makes you start or try to go too fast. Been there done that and in a HM it just doesn't work well unless you really have more potential than you realize.
@Laurz9191 - love that you got to run around that beautiful lake, even if you didn't notice it much! Great finish time too! You look very happy with your results and the sausage. In my mind I was thinking grilled bratwurst but that looks more like a cured salami?
It is pouring rain here today and since @SummerSkier got us to @eleanorhawkins I may just head over and have a nice glass of sangria and something tasty to eat! Tomorrow the storm should be gone and I can start the new year out with a run! On the other hand it would be nice to finish the year with a short run if it clears up a bit.4 -
Stopping by to say HI and give a quick year-end summary.
Here are the stats:On one hand things seem bleak, but on the other hand I've held on to consistency in doing "something", whether the something was an ultra marathon in May or now just a short walk. I've got a lot I'm thankful for right now, especially family & friends who have really shown that they care.
While it might look like I've kept on going all year, if I'd post the months separately, you'd see the decline as those circles get smaller and smaller as the year went on, due to my increasing struggles with long-haul covid.
RUN THE YEAR folks - Congratulations! I did go out for a forest walk with the girls from running club today, so I was with you all to the end even though I was just walking. I was happy to see that I managed to hold on to 6th place for elevation gain, despite dropping almost to the very bottom of the list for distance etc.
Recent pic from my cold water adventures.
Cold water immersion is one thing that has been helping with my symptoms.
I come by and skim your posts every now and then, and am inspired by all of your running! Keep going!!!10 -
Congrats RTY team, we made it!! 🥳🎉👏
That's a nice way to end the year!
Great year for you @tarun_yadavA! Yeah you can do a full marathon without a doubt.
Congrats @Laurz9191 on your 10K! German sausage Mmmm 😋
Getting excited for your races @martaindale!
8.52 miles @ 8:52 pace this afternoon. I've always wanted to do that....match pace to distance 😄 I may have done that once or twice before, but I think that's cool. I'm just a geek I guess.
Well that makes 365 days of activities (running or walking). It was a good year.

We made it home (for me hehehehe)
Well done everyone, what a rollercoaster of a year it's been!
I'm racing around like a lunatic trying to cook and stuff after work so can't stop and comment on everything, but you all rock. Hugs and sangria all round 😅6 -

Thank goodness you went back and entered your walking miles @SummerSkier! I volunteered at a race this morning. In between my race duties and the awards ceremony I was able to get a 1.65 mile walk in. Immediately afterwards, one of the runners was hosting brunch at his house. The rain held off for the race but then it's been raining ever since and I've been trying to psych myself up to get out in it. Congratulations RTW team and thanks for the sangria @eleanorhawkins!
Congratulations on your race @Laurz9191! Great pace. The sausage looks very different from what I envisioned also!
@tarun_yadavA - Happy Anniversary. Your wife is lovely!

Thank you!
So, I keep a spread sheet of my activity. I was getting 2023 ready, and you made me put moon distance on it...@Teresa502 wrote: »

@Laurz9191 Congratulations on your 10K and meeting your month's goal! That's a beautiful lake. I couldn't help but wonder what the temperature was with you in a tank and shorts and the guy behind you in a heavy coat and boots. You look great!
Thanks for adding in your miles @SummerSkier . So glad we made it to @eleanorhawkins since she had such great food/drink prepared for us!
@polskagirl01 I am impressed by how consistently you are getting out there and doing what you can. It may not be running, but you are not just sitting on the couch either. I hope your symptoms subside in 2023!
@Scott6255 Cool that you matched pace with distance. Great job on your year of streaking too.
You never cease to amaze me @AlphaHowls !
I wun 4.00 miles on the treadmill today in 1:00:27 min. I ran enough to keep my HR above 110 and walked to keep it below 140. I just didn't have the energy for a full out run or timed intervals today.
That brings my monthly total to 72.50/ 70.0 mile goal, so beat that. I didn't realize it, but turns out that is the most miles I've traversed in a month this year, by half a mile. My yearly total is 759.69 miles. That's less than my total for last year by 38.55 miles, but still pretty good considering that my longest run this year was 10.11 miles. Anyway, I'm happy with that.
I looked back at Jan 2022 to see what my goals for the year were. Apparently I didn't set any. The only one I know that I wanted to do for sure was keep up my mile streak, which I did. I'm still contemplating next year. Hopefully I'll figure it out and post tomorrow on the new thread.
Hope everyone has a fun and safe New Year's Eve. See you in 2023!5 -
@quilteryoyo
Thanks for your words of support. Yes, the weather was a bit strange today. It warmed up all the way to 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit). Today was the first day it hasn’t been so “wintery” so some people ran the race in long pants and with jackets. It was quite windy, but I’m sure a lot of them must have been pretty hot. I did some online research this morning to figure out what I should wear and read that I should add 10 degrees. Well, 25 degrees Celsius is nice summer weather, so shorts and a tank top it was, especially when running at max speed. On the starting line I was cold, but as soon as the race started it was perfect.
@shanaber @Teresa502 Maybe cured salami is a better term for my prize . I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The race took place in a small village and the salami was from one of the farmers in the village, so that was kind of cool.
@tarun_yadavA Happy anniversary and good job getting a New Year’s Eve Half in!
I am really looking forward to 2023 and sharing/hearing about some good runs with you all! Happy New Year’s!

No run for me today. I did get out for a nice long walk. I took my two old dogs for a shealk and then took my son's corgi for a longer walk. He is younger and more energetic than my two.
I did finish December with 111.5 miles. My total running miles for 2022 were 1401.2 miles. My total for 2023 including runs, walks and steps was 2095.83 miles.
Congrats to all who accomplished their goals and those who worked on them you are all an inspiration to me.
We stayed in tonight. I am ready for bed, but we have been waiting for the fireworks to settle down so the dogs will calm down. See you all next year (or I guess this year) in the January thread.4 -
Happy New Year everyone!
Random comments I haven't had time to make before....
@quilteryoyo my race on Jan 15th is just 13km with 644m of elevation according to my Garmin from the other day. It's the shorter version of the tough 23km one I did mid January last year then had to spend the afternoon walking round town trying to find covid tests for my husband (who did indeed have covid). That long one goes over the mountain that burned this summer, and they're donating money to a fund to reforest up there. I had sworn I would never run it again, but my new running buddy wanted to try her first trail race so we decided to go for the short and not too ugly.
While the sausage wouldn't be my thing, I do like races that do that kind of thing. Trail races here are often in little mountain villages and we typically get something in goody bags from local sponsors. Southern Spain so think olives, olive oil, bread rolls... Winners often get a whole cheese or a leg of ham!
I'm half asleep, can't remember what else I wanted to say.
Also can't remember whether I set a goal for the year. According to Garmin I got in 1847.4km for the year just beating 2021's 1845!
See you all in January.5 -

I am on call this week so got stuck at home yesterday waiting on an ultrasound. That put me starting my run quite a bit later than planned and it was about 70 when I headed out and sunny. I decided this was good marathon day practice as that’s about what the heat of the day should be and I will have several miles of fully exposed sun. Since I usually run in the morning, I haven’t encountered full sun in quite a while. I practiced my race day plan with the 1 mile run- 0.5 mile walk intervals. Well, sort of. I ran the first 2.5 miles basically out of habit. My legs are feeling healed so I have been much looser with the walking intervals.
I mapped out a plan around the water stations and my fueling plan for the HM and the marathon. Those looser intervals will definitely come into play for the full. There are 19(!!!) water stations, with more in the back half of the course than the front. So if I plan to walk those so I don’t have to carry water, I almost don’t need walk intervals. Started packing last night too. I’m leaving in a couple of days and getting so excited/nervous! See you guys in January!7 -
@Laurz9191 Great job on your 10k! That lake is beautiful.
@Scott6255 Congrats to you for the year streak and running so many miles this year!
@polskagirl01 I know it’s disappointing to feel like you’re not doing as much as you were. But, your persistence and consistency is what’s so important right now. So many people in your position would certainly have found themselves doing nothing. Working with what your body is capable of right now and getting healthy is all you can do. I’m proud of you for sticking with it!2 -
@Laurz9191 Sounds like you made a great decision on your running outfit for the day. It's still odd that the guy has on that big coat if it was that warm....at least unzip it.
@Fit2btied2016 Congrats on making your month's goal. Hope you enjoyed the Tiramisu. And, yes, running and racing can be addictive.
Excellent mileage @kgirlhart ! I'm lucky that fireworks do not bother my Tippy. If it's loud, she may perk her ears up, but then lays right back down.
@eleanorhawkins I hope you and your friend enjoy the race. You know you are a runner when you say, "It's JUST 13K."
@martaindale Congrats on that mileage for the year. Awesome! Glad you were able to have race-day conditions for your run. People will probably need those 19 water stations, especially the one's toward the end. Sounds like you have a great plan. Can't wait to hear all about them. I know you are getting excitified! You're going to do great!

@polskagirl01 - you have such a great variety of activities! I have complete confidence that you will get back to being able to do more over time. Interesting that the polar bear swim helps relieve your symptoms. I wonder why? I know some athletes do ice baths to help alleviate inflammation so maybe that?
@AlphaHowls - it is always good to have 'stretch' goals 😳
Thanks @eleanorhawkins for welcoming us home and making sangria! It really was a great year of running.
@Scott6255 - That is pretty cool matching your pace and distance! I would have to run too far these days to match my pace. Maybe someday if I can get that pace to come down a bit!
I did get a little neighborhood outing with Hobbes during a break in the rain yesterday. It is funny that the weather apps all showed no rain expected yesterday and I dressed accordingly and got drenched. Today it was supposed to rain all day so I dressed accordingly and only had one time where it just spit at us a bit, not really rain. My rain jacket was not even damp.
So I finished the month with 71.71miles - my 2nd lowest this year. For the year I hit 1046.39miles
Note - I wrote this yesterday and forgot to actually post it 🤷🏻♀️6
