@quilteryoyo Your race photos look great. Mine always look like I'm melting or mad, even when I'm having a good race. I'm really going to try for some good on-course photos during Dopey. Anything that doesn't make me look miserable.4

Logging last night's and this morning's runs. The soreness following the acupuncture disappeared around 8pm. Weird. But on the run the next night, I got some discomfort in the tendon itself so ended up walking some. I have been continuous running my short runs 6 mile or less. I was worried it would still be sore this morning, but I was able to run the entire distance without so much as a twinge. So, maybe the acupuncture helped. IDK what was going on last night though.
The weather this morning was upper 30's and so nice! These temps (upper 30's-40's) are my fave!! It's going to be a colder week for us here and we are actually going to have a cold Christmas!! I'm so happy about that.5 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »I got an e-mail with official race pictures this afternoon. My favorites are under the spoiler.
Water walk break.
Being silly for the camera. The photographer loved it.
Home stretch. You can really see how hot I was.
The only one where I am "flying." Both feet are barely off the ground.
Finish line. Another lesson learned - if pictures are being taken, look up at the finish line, not down at my watch. Plus, I think I look like I'm about to trip over my own two feet. LOL
I was always afraid I'd trip over the timing mechanism.3 -

It was definitely cold this morning. But I still had a nice 5.5 mile run. Yesterday I hit 2000 miles for Run the Year. I am including all of my steps in that, not just running. It's still challenging for me though. And I am excited that I should hit 2022 in a few days.
Thanks @mari33a! I'm glad you didn't fall.
Great race report @quilteryoyo. You did great and I love the medal. And those are some really good race photos!
Outstanding!!!!!!!2 -
That's awesome @kgirlhart that you will RTY!
I did a sleasy 3 miles on the treadmill this evening. Nothing hurt and it felt good 😊
4 -
Glad you weren't injured @tarun_yadavA . Sometimes "catching" yourself from falling makes you twist in weird ways. Also glad to here is should clear up soon.
@martaindale I hope you get a lot of great photos. The only photographer I actually saw was the one where I was acting silly and the one that took my photo with the lighthouse in the background. Didn't even think about one at the finish line or I would have been looking up and cheering the fact that I was done. LOL So glad to read that your calf wasn't sore and you were able to run 6.1 miles this morning without even a twinge! We're going to have a really cold Christmas too. Not sure I am as happy about it as you are, even though if we get some snow, that would be nice.
@Tramboman Wouldn't that be the pits!
Great recovery run @Scott6255 ! Glad nothing hurt.

Congratulations @Fit2btied2016 ! You are doing great and glad you have such a "nice" massage lady. Good luck getting your puppy today. You'll have to post pictures for us.
@Mari33a Nice run. Love the pictures. In the second one it looks like your pup is questioning your sanity. LOL2 -

Last long run before Dopey! Since I was run-walking I decided to run for 3 hrs rather than shooting for the 16 miles on the schedule. I guessed I would end up with 14-15 miles. But, it was cold and I ran through my first walk break to warm up and I was keeping up a good pace. When I got to 8 miles I was under 1.5 hours so I turned around and figured I'd see what happened on the back end. I ended up skipping a walk break that would have been at the very end and got to 16 miles in 2:55!! That's a 10:58 mm! That's only a couple minutes slower than my first 16 miler, which I ran continuously!
This was exactly what I needed this weekend. I built back up to the mileage I was supposed to be at on my plan, my Achilles didn't hurt, and my pace is downright respectable. It gives me a lot of comfort that I will not only be able to finish, but also that it won't take me all day. Now, fingers crossed for decent weather. It likely won't be cold, but I'd love to not be running a marathon in full sun in the 80's.10 -
Awesome 16 miler @martaindale! Glad your last long run went so well. Now you can breathe easy knowing you will do well at Dopey and you can have some fun 😊
I did a 5 mile run outside this afternoon. Temp was a gorgeous 46F. It felt quite a bit harder than I was expecting. Afterwards I realized I didn't take my asthma medicine. That probably made the difference.

Quite possibly a week of crazy laps in my future as Siberia descends on us. Just seeing the temperature makes my skin and bones hurt.11 -
@martaindale You had an awesome run today! That is an excellent pace for 16 miles. You are going to kill the Dopey! I'm so excited for you.
Nice run @Scott6255 . I'm sure not having your medication was what made it harder than it should have been.
You're doing great @AlphaHowls ! We're getting the artic blast next week too, so I'm very thankful for my treadmill. Hey, did you see the first mile sign I posted in my race report? It made me think of you.
I just walked one mile on the treadmill again today. I was so far behind on Christmas that I took today to mostly get caught up. I fixed 40 cards, wrapped presents until I ran out of tape, and put up my little LED Christmas tree. All the decorations I can handle this year.

Today I ran the Pioneer 5-Miler held at Davy Crockett Birthplace. This is part of the Tennessee Parks Running Tour and our track club is the organizer. It was a cold one. Although the race didn't start until 11:00 am, I volunteered to help with registration/packet pick up so I got there about 9:00 am. The temp was around 34F and there was a cold wind blowing. I dressed in layers so even though I couldn't wear my gloves during the registration (which was outside under a picnic shelter) I didn't get too cold. At start time it had warmed up to 39F. The course is really beautiful as it goes out into the countryside but it does have some hills in it. I didn't notice the wind so much going out but the last couple of miles back to the finish line I encountered some strong headwinds. Last time I ran this race was in 2020 and my finish time was 53:36 earning me a third place finish. This year, my time was 53:44 and I won third place again!
Race swag
@martaindale - definitely a respectable pace today on your 16-miler! Glad you felt no pain and hopefully it will stay that way.
@quilteryoyo - great detailed race report and I loved all your pictures!
@mari33a - Great photo of you and pup!
@alphahowls - I'm really dreading our single digit forecast for next week. I may be joining you for crazy laps.5 -
Congratulations @Teresa502 ! I didn't realize the Pioneer 5-Miler was today. I guess I need to keep up to date better. But, I probably wouldn't have run it anyway. It was a cold one today with the wind. You did fantastic!!!!2

Yes, I did! I loved it! In my head, I thought...'if she thinks I am going to the moon..she better guess again!'
Also, I do have SAD, depression, PTSD. It's a fight some days...

Great job on your race @Teresa502! Congrats on the 3rd place finish. You haven't lost a step in 2 years 😁4

We are going to visit our son tomorrow so I ran my long run today. It was really cold for me at 30°F feels like 26°. I debated about what to wear and ended up wearing capri length leggings, a t-shirt with 2 pairs of sleeves and gloves. I was a little chilly starting out, but overall as long as I kept going I was good. I eventually took the sleeves off and I had the gloves off but ended up putting them back on. It was a pretty day with lots of sunshine and no wind. I ran 10 miles and that got me to 2022 for Run the Year. I did count all of my miles, not just running. But most of my miles are running miles.
I am glad I hit my goal before the arctic blast we are supposed to get next week. I am really not looking forward to that.
Congratulations on your AG win @Teresa502!
Your dog is so cute @Mari33a

Good morning everyone! 😊
Happy Sunday! 😊
Got in a 6 this morning
@martaindale - awesome, Sarah! Saw the 16Miler on Strava 🙌. Glad no pains or niggles.
@AlphaHowls - you're just, wow! Well done on being well ahead of schedule3 -
Congratulations @kgirlhart for reaching 2022 miles! Your consistency always inspires me!2

So we are supposed to get the arctic blast next Thursday with temps dropping into the teens. I spent yesterday giving the outdoor plants a final water and covering outdoor faucets and then setting up the garage with a grow light and bringing everything in. It was only supposed to get to 35 last night but it is 29 right now so I am glad I got everything done. I covered up the purple clematis as the base and gave them the llama and unicorn lighted critturs to keep them warm. I did not expect it to really freeze hard tho so I did not cover the flowers or double wrap it.
I am glad I am finished with my miles for the year also as I too am experiencing all the S.A.D things - the oddest part for me is that my back is fine for running but it is absolutely a beast and does not want me to walk. I don't have 100 for the month yet - 85.9 but I won't be too upset if I don't make those. If I just get out and do a mile each day the rest of the day it will be done.

@Teresa502 amazing accomplishment!!!👏🎉👏👏
@scott6255 you don't run for a few days and you forget your med? (jewish mom voice!) 😱🧐😉
@kgirlhart CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! It was cold here yesterday but still in the 40's and shorts actually was a decent choice for me with hat gloves and 2 upper layers.. LOL.
@martaindale so glad that injury is in the rear view mirror and you got a confidence building run in! ✅👏✅
@eleanorhawkins I really enjoyed reading your report and at first I was so with you on the other runner keeping with you for the last few minutes but then after a bit I thought that if that happened and the other runner did not say anything to me I might have grabbed my pepper spray and been a little freaked.
@tarun_yadavA so happy for you that the ice is going to WASH away later today. I just can't run on it (snow is not too bad) and having it patchy or black ice is even worse. In my neighborhood the trees overhang the roads so sometimes it will all be dry except for 10 feet under a tree which is impossible to get around.
@AlphaHowls I don't know how you do those crazy laps in your house. If I was to try to even run a mile in mine I would for sure stub a toe or fall over the furniture or be incredibly bored. I am hating these cold dark days as well but the thought of spring and the new blooms for me to take photos of is keeping me going because without winter we would not have our lovely beautiful spring!
@Mari33a What a gorgeous pup! I agree with V that he is questioning your sanity to go out in that ice! 😱🤣6 -
@SummerSkier I live in a pretty safe area, and that particular road runs round the outside of a busy industrial estate, if I screamed like 100 people would hear me, plus the pavements are quiet but there are always cars going by, so that sort of thought never entered my mind. Maybe if it had been out on the trails in the middle of nowhere it would have done, but not there.
To be honest, although I have taken some self-defense classes mainly because I'm a woman who runs alone, often in the dark very early in the morning, and I've been flashed a couple of times and changed route once due to a guy who gave me bad jujuj, I don't really see other humans as a likely threat to my safety. Dogs, wild boar, bucks, snakes and technical trails all rank higher on the list of things that will probably hurt me while running. Oh, and myself. Especially as I try to learn to use poles. Zero arm-leg coordination here!5 -

I have tripped a few times, particularly since I run on carpet and sometimes it 'catches' my shoe. I have nearly crashed into a glass table on more than one occasion. Over time, I have learned to shorten my stride and just keep it slow. Boredom is something I do not have. I learned to never be bored...ever. If your mother ever hears you say you are bored, she will find things for you to do. I am easily entertained and have a tendency to zone out when I run.
I do not like the cold, never been a fan of snow and ice. Snow and ice looks fantastic on postcards, calendars and movies. Since losing weight, anything below 60 F makes me ache. As I age, I am becoming more and more intolerant to the drop in temperatures.

@AlphaHowls Seems I remember that some of us suggested you make a trip to the moon and back once you made it around the world, but we decided it wasn't possible...... I'm sorry you get SADD and PTSD. That's so hard to deal with. Hugs, even though I know that doesn't really help.
Congratulations on running the year @kgirlhart ! That's awesome. Enjoy your visit with your son.
Nice running @tarun_yadavA . Glad the ice is only in patches now. Maybe it'll be gone soon.
@Fit2btied2016 That sounds like a harrowing road trip. I'm so glad that you and the pups made it back home safely. Looking forward to seeing a picture of their cuteness.
@AlphaHowls We must have had the same mom. She always said, if you're bored, I'll find you something to do. LOL But, she loved to read, so if I told her I was reading, I could get out of doing about anything...not that I ever did that. I can't imagine doing a HM of crazy laps either. Do you have a path worn out in your carpet?
My church had a beautiful Christmas Cantata this morning - accompanying the choir was a flute, violin, cello, and trumpet. It was beautiful. Afterwards, mom and I had Mexican for lunch. Needless to say, I was too full to run when I first got home, so tried to nap. I may have just a little. Got up and forced myself to go down for a treadmill session. I walked a total of one mile for warm up and cool down and ran one mile - no walking. Ran at 4.5/4.2/4.6/4.2/4.7 mph for 3/2/3/2/3:24 minutes. Felt easy. I just didn't have a whole lot of energy or the mental fortitude to do more.
That brings my monthly total up to 39.71/70.0 mile goal. It's gonna be hard to make it, I'm so far behind. I need to get my brain in gear and my time organized.

My mom swears I have worn out the carpet, but I have not, but you can tell where I am mostly.

@kgirlhart Congrats! Thats quite an accomplishment. And, wow, capris in 30 degree weather. You are made of sturdier stock than I! I would be thick leggings, warm long sleeve, gloves, ear cover. The whole shebang.
Congrats to you for your 3rd place finish @Teresa502!
It is getting cold here too but you guys up north are really getting hit hard. Stay warm everyone!2 -

Unlike @kgirlhart I decided to take advantage of an open schedule and waited until the afternoon to run. It was 50F, feels like 47F. And I wore long leggings, long sleeve tech shirt, and baseball hat.
@SummerSkier I am out in the hill country right now and it is getting way colder here than Houston. We have 2 nights with lows in the teens predicted. It's a good thing I came up and covered outdoor faucets and got the well house heat lamp set up. We hadn't done the winter prepping yet as it really hadn't gotten cold yet then boom! Super mega cold!4 -
Morning all.
Got a 9K in6 -
Very demoralising run this morning. Long, pathetic self-pity party report in spoiler.I had planned a nice long run adventure involving going up to the village on the mountain, along a trail above it and then back down another route from the end of the trail. All of the mountain behind us is very rocky and technical, but there are marked hiking routes and the one I intended on taking is one I've hiked in the past, in fact I'm pretty sure we even took my daughter (though I do remember constantly worrying she was going to fall off the edge). In summary, even though it took HOURS I made myself at least complete the HM distance in case I don't find time to do another half this month. That makes 27 consecutive monthly HM distances for my dad. It's his 69th birthday tomorrow, over 2 years since they removed his brain tumour and he still doesn't know I do this crazy thing in his honour.
So, I take my usual country road up to the village, only to find they're digging it up and my way was blocked by a digger, a huge hole and a dumper truck they were putting all the earth into. They stopped when they saw me, and directed me to squeeze round the outside of the dumper, pretty much through a tree. I was doing ok until the guy sitting up inside looked down and said "do you want me to get down and help you?" *kitten* that! I thought, grabbing the front wheel with my left hand and pulling myself up onto a rock to get by, scraping my inner thigh on a spiky branch as I did so.
Ok, back to business. Had a gel, power-hiked the last couple of steep hills to the village. I had plotted my route on Garmin so my watch was supposedly telling me where to go (will I ever learn?) but it told me to walk through the side of a house so I had to improvise a bit. This village is interesting, the upper part is alleyways with staircases that kind of go under houses and squeeze between them. Anyway, I eventually emerged on the road and crossed to the start of the trails.
After a couple of minutes I noticed movement ahead of me and soon caught up with a little dog that was wandering about. I thought it was lost first, then the way it kept walking but looking back at me made me wonder if it belonged to someone who was in trouble and it wanted me to follow it. Then I reached it and saw it had a big label tied to its harness explaining that it is old but not lost and takes a gentle morning stroll on the trail while it's mum runs up and down the mountain then collects it on the way home. Very cute!
So far so good. Then the rocky, technical singletrack started. I felt off-balance a couple of times going uphill, and was thinking (and getting depressed about) the fact that my balance is getting worse, despite working on it. That mindset may have had something to do with what was coming next. I passed an old, disused quarry, carried on along the trail and as it passed over a ridge and the world fell away in front of me I realised it was a very steep, very rocky almost vertical drop. Right next to me. Told myself to look ahead, not over the edge, and kept going until suddenly there was a sharp turn and I just froze. Loose stones, steep descent ahead and I couldn't work out whether that really was the right trail or not. Even though my watch said it was, and I couldn't see anywhere I might have gone wrong. Basically my quads and my brain both failed on me.
Apparently vertigo is something we do now. So I turned round. I can't believe I did that, but I did, I gave up and turned round. Even though that meant I would now have to find a way to get back down the trail that minutes earlier I had been thinking I was glad I was going up and not trying to come down. That's how scared I was. I actually had to come down the hardest part on my *kitten*.
Once I reached the quarry I took an access track back down to the road and followed that along to where the trail ended, then picked up my planned route back down to the coast. That part was ok, a couple on donkeys cheered me up a bit by calling out to me as I passed.
But dammit, I'm a terrible runner and now I find I'm scared of heights too. Depressing.
