Update on my trip friends. We went over to pick up two extra batteries we had borrowed to our friends for the bike ride. I was flabbergasted when my lady friend said that she owed me an apology. I asked her for what and she mentioned the incident where they had wanted to go to the breakfast restaurant. Evidently she knew I was not very happy. She went back and reread the text messages that she sent to me and my responses. She realized that she was the one that made the request. It was nice of her to acknowledge that. Her husband seem to have a change of behavior as well. They must have talked about the incident and our trip. Still never do that again!!

Melanie, welcome! It sounds like your approach is very similar to mine. I concentrate on protein and eat around 1600 calories a day. Loss is slow, but I don’t get hungry or have sugar cravings. I try to choose healthy carbs and limit them to two meals a day. I would not pass the low carb test, though. I also try to limit added sugars to 25 grams of less. I aim for 100 to 130 g of protein per day.4

Thank goodness that the work, work, work mentality is changing. We do want more balance! That has been one of several good things to emerge from the pandemic. People are re-evaluating what's important.
There are many articles on "Work-life balance after pandemic" if someone is interested in googling and reading.
That's one thing I really like about Australia. They've had a better work-life balance than Canada for quite some time with much longer leave available. For me, it's unlikely I'll move back to Canada if I have to work there. I'm happy to retire to Canada, but unless Canada catches up with Australia or a particular business offers me something similar to what I can get in Australia, I'll stay here to work.
I've noticed that since 2021, there's been quite a shuffle within what were very stable state government departments. I have been one of those who has shuffled! I was a little over 8 years in my position, and in 2021, I decided it was time for a change. One of the things I did was to go to a 9-day fortnight, but I've done the job shuffle too. I will tell you more about it ... it's been very complicated. Hopefully things will be sorted next week.
However, yes, unless the nap is in the lunch hour, just wandering off to sleep in the middle of the day is a no-no!
Way back when, in a previous organisation in Canada, my department hired a university student as part of a work experience program. I really don't know why he even agreed to the program. He wasn't interested in anything we were getting him to do, and we were trying to introduce him to a variety of things. He would sit with someone for a little while going over something, then would get up to go to the toilet, and would vanish for the next hour!! We finally figured out where he was going. Way up in the top of the building was a mezzanine area where very old stuff had been stored, some things dating back to the early years of the company. It was very dusty and nothing had been touched in years ... except that this uni student had discovered there was a bench of some sort up there, and he'd go up there to sleep!! He got a couple warnings, but kept doing it and was let go. But a couple weeks later he contacted us and wanted a reference for a new job!!

However, my left hand has been very sore and a bit swollen from the bite.
Nevertheless, we moved over to our next location, and this past Saturday, we held a 200 km Audax cycling event with 3 riders who all did very well.
And today, Sunday, we are back at home and all relaxing in our usual places.
We treated ourselves to some yummy food. We cycled, walked, slept and read. We saw some places we haven't seen in a while. It was lovely ... and feels like it has been a lot longer than just 12 days!!

Oh my gosh, Machka!!!
You probably already know this, but about 80% of cat bites become infected, usually with Pasteurella muliticoda, and the infection can develop quite rapidly, sometimes within 6 hours of being bitten. It requires specific antibiotics - the sooner the better - I hope you have already received medical care, dear girl, cat bites can be sneaky because the cat fang inoculates the bacteria very deep in the hand tissue. Antibiotic creams don’t begin to penetrate that deep, and are inadequate for treatment. If abscesses develop along a hand tendon, surgery is required.
I know this sounds dramatic. However, I am not an alarmist; I am offering sound medical knowledge based on fact.
You are probably already on an oral antibiotic. ???

No medical care yet. We were in rural Tasmania where medical care is not readily available and it's a long weekend when medical care is not readily available.
However, the colour of my hand is returning to normal and the swelling is coming down.
I do know cat bites can be problematic, as I mentioned 3 family members have spent time in hospital here relatively recently because of cat bites.
I was looking at it this morning and it may need a stitch or two. We are going into the city tomorrow (when everything is back in business again after the long weekend), so I'll see if I can get in somewhere to have that done.

You should soak your hand in Epson salt bath. Epson salt will draw the poisons out. Even infections. When my husband cut the tip of his finger off and it was reattached, it started to become rather nasty and infection was setting in. He was in danger of having to have it amputated. His new doctor a hand specialist said to soak his hand in a really warm Epson salt bath for 20 minutes 2 to 3 times a day. It cleared it up immediately! Also, make sure that it gets plenty of air. Not bandaged all day long. After soaking his finger, he would keep the bandage off for 2 to 3 hours, then re-bandage. Then did this three times a day.3 -

When I used shower curtains in one place I lived in Canada, I'd buy a new one about once a year because they'd grow mould and rip etc. But I would get them at a dollar store for <$5.

Debbie - I hope your DH soon realizes how fast life is going and figure out his wife should be his priority.
Rita - I always thought genetics played a part in our weight. I wish I had taken after my maternal grandmother’s side instead of every other side I have. 😂
Heather - one of the hardest adjustments we had when we moved to Alberta was that the girls (6 & 8) didn’t have a sleepover for 2 years. We came from being surrounded by family and friends and they were gone at least one weekend a month sometimes more. Aunts, 2 sets of grandparents and 1 Great grandmother that all asked for them for sleepovers all the time. I am 100% positive that that time as only a couple saved our marriage. Moving out here I remember we were having a stupid argument about something. He said I’ve had enough of this. I thought he was leaving. I remember sitting with my back against the door, feet planted on the wall across from me telling me he wasn’t moving me to some miserable city where I didn’t know how to get around, didn’t know a single person and then leaving me. If I was stuck there so was he.
I think it was shortly after that we left for a weekend and left the girls with the sitter that moved here with us.
I am one of the odd people that don’t mind the time changes. Funnily enough I manage to feel more rested at both of them. Tonight I will go to bed at 10 like I normally do, that means I’ll end up falling asleep an hour earlier.
My grandkids have a PD day tomorrow, I bet that was at the teachers urging so they didn’t have to deal with out of sorts kids.
The Grands were out today with their parents and I did a bit of crafting.
Michaela was chatting away and said something about “now that I’m 7”. I said, “how did you get to be 7 already”. She said, “well, I just had my 7th birthday on Jan 3rd”.
My Grandson is driving his Father and I a little batty because he has grown his hair out. I have a feeling that he is doubling down to continue growing it the more we say anything, so I’ve decided to keep quiet.

Yes ... people say you lose an hour's sleep at one of the time changes. I don't. My sleep stays the same ... but I might get slightly less done.
At the other end, again, my sleep stays the same, but I might get slightly more done.

Tracey - I so agree! Those precious times alone with each other. I wish we could do it more often, but I find all three kids together quite a strain. Max is nearly 12 , with different demands. Finding activities that suit them all is a stretch. Without DH I couldn't do it. The trouble is, they all want his attention! Max can get outgunned by the forceful girls, especially Bea.
It's still true that a change of scenery is good for the relationship, even when you have endless time together. Even a date night. Haven't had one for a bit now. Next week might be good, as we have French Circle.
Did you read the article by Philippa Perry that I posted? It's similar to Gretchen Rubin's advice in her first book. We all need a reminder now and then to do these simple things that make all the difference. I have got so much better at it than I was in my first marriage. The Gottmans also say a similar thing. I'm careful now to reply to 'bids' that DH makes towards me and not just ignore them, and I always thank him and compliment him. (As the Gottmans say, it is contempt that kills a marriage, and I did far too much of that in my first one)
Marriage is a dance. It is so important to be always looking out for ways to respond to each other and not just live side by side. Joy is there, but we have to learn the steps, and it takes care and attention.
The other thing Philippa says is, you can't change them, only yourself. They will, most likely, change as a result of your actions, but you are only responsible for your own actions. Wishing and hoping they will change, is wasted energy.
I always like reading about Barbara 's efforts with her husband. We must pay attention to each other. If you act more loving, you feel more loving.

It’s a changeable day. I’m hopeful it will clear up.
Tracey/Heather: I so agree. Time alone as a couple is so very precious. However, we also need our me time. I’m grateful that DH and I seem to have developed a good balance. It wasn’t always the case, but after almost 57 years together, we are glad to have each other ‘to have and to hold ….’

3. Start today by appreciating your body and that you are alive. I meditate on this each morning when I wake up, and am grateful for each new opportunity to have a good day.

Quick check in-had good visit with family yesterday.Picture of me with birthday boy.
As a bonus yesterday I also got to chat with other kids-so checked in with all three the same day. Got walk in after I return from visit and a jump start on some work this week. We were teased with a few springlike days but now back to winter.
Stopping to get some blood work this morning on way to work-scheduled it thinking I would have to fast-then realized just thyroid testing so fasting not necessary. I think I have a dental appointment tomorrow for cleaning and podiatrist in late afternoon. Not sure what else is on schedule for work-will check it out after shower.

Heather - I used Phillipa Perry's advice yesterday. Corey did a jam-up job on both caulking and trimming out the new tub, so it was easy to find three places to insert a compliment. One of the few times I've consciously shaped communication with him in quite a few years. Thank you for the read - now to make that into a good habit! On the subject of keeping the kids for a night, a huge part of me has always been glad we don't live close enough for that to be an easy option. Selfish, I know.
Ginny - That's a nice-looking grandson! I thought he had a weird earring in his right ear for a second until I figured out it was a soap bottle on the sink behind you! He has your eyes.
Tracey - I love pictures of Michaela, she looks very calm and quietly happy. Corey and I would have the same reaction to the long hair on your grandson, good idea not to respond at all. I do know that kids affect marriages in some interesting ways. I think part of the reason my first marriage never really matured into a deep and loving relationship (besides the fact that we both came into it damaged by abuse) was because I was barren. We didn't adopt, as there were just so many barriers that we gave up quickly. Different religions (he was Catholic and I was a heathen), so the churches wouldn't talk to us, state agencies wouldn't talk to us because we were military and could move at any moment (this was the early 1980s), and we both worked because otherwise we would have been poor as churchmice. Still didn't have the money the private agencies demanded. Because of not having kids, we never had to keep another person alive by our actions. I think it made it easier for us to be selfish and not too bright financially.

Need to get my meds sorted out for the week and update the Big Book of Death to take it to my lawyer's appointment tomorrow afternoon. That's the ambition for the day. Would like to get outside this afternoon once it gets warm and do some cleanup on the flower beds. The tulip tree is already blooming, but it appears the upper branches got a little blasted in last year's drought. The bulb-type flowers are already beginning to show color, but there are often only one or two flowers on a plant rather than a dozen or more.

I guess Rich,the kids dad ended up in the hospital last night..he went for routine bloodwork last week and had a new phlebotomist who messed up and he ended up with a blood clot in his arm and and has been in alot of pain. Poor guy.. guess Dan is going to pick him up over at the hospital and take him home..1 -

I love Tracey 's grandson's hair! It's quite the fashion in Brighton and Hove to have luscious locks. Max was tempted, but never went for it. His friends all had long hair. My elder son had fabulous long, blonde hair when he was 15. I was quite sad when he cut it off.
I agree with not offering an opinion. It all depends on his peers and how they see it. Nice to experiment with our image at that age. 😀
Going out to deliver my Advance Decision to the doctor. Plus getting a LFT from the pharmacy. I've got DH'S driving licence and a signed note so I can get it for free.
I'll also call in at the art shop to buy some paper for cut out art for Wednesday. And a new pair of sharp scissors! Then some grocery shopping for a couple of bits.
I have a phone call scheduled for 4 pm with L. I'm curious to know how her weekend went with an old man friend. Colour me nosey.

Ginny and Tracey ~ Thanks for the photos of the grands! Ginny, you look great! Michaela is a small beauty. And, grandson looks fine! My 47 yr old son constantly reminds us that we never let him grown out his hair so he is very lenient about his own son's.
I have been going through a period of crying at every instant and drinking more wine than usual. I think a lot of it is worry over my husband's health and us having to see that his brother-in-law is cared for as his dementia is getting worse. I have an appointment with my internest tomorrow and hope she can increase my anxiety/depression meds.

Again, lots of posts to catch up on!
@drkatiebug I am at around 1750 calories with only the ability to walk around like Lurch from the Adams family and not gaining. This amount of food would have been absolutely out of the question for the majority of my adult life. What I have learned is that all calories are not created equal and my body definitely responds differently to differing percentages of macronutrients. Tracking food can be a pain in the backside but I have goals I want to meet without starving myself- my usual go to.
As the majority of my career was spent as a livestock veterinarian, mostly with beef cows, I can tell you all that the short stints I spent doing mixed animal practice taught me that mean cats are the scariest species on the planet and cat bites should be monitored closely. I will take an irate mama cow over an angry cat any day. They are 10 pounds of ferociousness 😾
I have my pre surgical appointment today and should get a concrete date for my knee replacement. My husband has to come with me to qualify as my post surgical helper… I hope he passes.

Hello ladies!
Carol, hope you feel better. It is a huge strain worrying about the declining years of our loved ones. Is there family you can talk to about your worries?
Melanie you are right about calories. I track everything even though it is largely the same day after day. And it took a lot of experimenting to find a low calorie meal plan I could live on, and I know that without my protein and fiber, I just get hungry again.
Another tidbit that helped me was learning that it takes me twenty minutes to feel full. So if I eat a yogurt, right after the yogurt I still feel a little hungry, but if I wait awhile it goes away. So I try to wait at least half an hour before eating a second thing.
That and drink water!
Well, enough unsolicited advice for one day. (Sorry, I got on my soapbox.) I'm off to the dermatologist. Then I have to figure out how to make lamb stew for my parents. I will be having my mango smoothie and tilapia. Probably half
the calories. And the yoga and aerobic walking tonight.

Machka, I will be interested to hear what the doctor says if you do end up going in with your cat bite. When my DH was bitten by a dog, urgent care told us that they don't stitch up dog bites because it stitches the infection inside. I know, however, of plenty of instances where dog bites were stitched up because it was medically necessary to do so, particularly on the face. (DH's was a finger.) It didn't really matter in our case, since his finger did heal on its own with topical application of antibiotic cream, but I'd be curious what they say.
Which reminds me of the time I tried to save $4.00 and it ended up costing us more like $50 or $60. We were young and poor and our cat had fleas. This was back in the day before Frontline and Revolution and all that stuff. Dave told me to get a flea collar at the grocery store, but it was $4.00 and I didn't think we could afford it. My grandmother told me they just sprinkled Sevin dust on their dogs and it worked just fine. Since we had a bag of Sevin dust in the shed, I liberally covered our cat. (Note: In case you haven't figured it out yet, I was young and STUPID in addition to being young and poor.) The cat licked it off and poisoned himself. We had to take him to the emergency vet to have his stomach pumped on a Sunday. On the way there, he scratched and bit Dave who was holding him. So we had to pay for the vet visit plus a doctor's visit to get Dave a tetanus shot. Fun times, but the cat survived until the ripe old age of 18, so I guess it was worth it.8 -

Michaela was chatting away and said something about “now that I’m 7”. I said, “how did you get to be 7 already”. She said, “well, I just had my 7th birthday on Jan 3rd”.
My Grandson is driving his Father and I a little batty because he has grown his hair out. I have a feeling that he is doubling down to continue growing it the more we say anything, so I’ve decided to keep quiet.
Thank you- I would like to feel like a priority to him but with him being so self centered, I don't see that truly happening unless something really drastic changes.
I understand what you mean about your grandson's hair. My son has let his hair grow a few times over the years. Before, when he was about your grandson's age not only did he let it grow long but HAD to flat iron it down in front of his eyes before he would leave the house. I hated it. He decided to get it cut and kept it cut short for many years then started growing it out again. It is now really long but never in his face and always well kept. His girlfriend likes it long and it does save him money on getting it cut every few weeks- his hair grows pretty fast. Hasn't cut it in a few years now. Seems to be growing a little slower now I think. As long as it is clean and taken care of, I don't say anything(I do go in and braid it once in a while, he has really thick healthy hair). Plus he is almost 25yrs old.

2. Notice three things you find beautiful in the outside world. The blue water of Lea Lake, Snow on the mountains at a distance, walking a nature trail. All at Bottomless Lakes State Park.
3. Start today by appreciating your body and that you are alive. I am healthy and above ground. I can walk,talk,hear, see, taste, and smell (mostly). I appreciate that I alive and have a healthy body.

5. Bring to mind people you care about and send love to them. I sent texts to my long distance friends to send them love.
6. Have a ‘no plans’ day and notice how that feels. Most days are like that for me. So much less stress!
7. Take three calm breaths at regular intervals during your day. Sounds like a plan.
8. Eat mindfully. Appreciate the taste, texture and smell of your food. Started at breakfast.
9. Take a full breath in and out before you reply to others. I will need to keep this in the front of my mind all day.
10. Get outside and notice how the weather feels on your face. Every day!

27. Cultivate a feeling of loving-kindness towards others today.
28. Notice when you are tired and take a break as soon as possible.
29. Choose a different route today and see what you notice.
