Sure sign of spring....saw a couple of robins in the yard. Grass is still snow covered but I noticed that they went to a tree in the front yard that I hang by bird feeders on. The feeders have black oil sunflower seeds in them. I think robins will eat any of the shelled ones that fall on the ground. They will probably also go after the small frozen crab apples that are still on the tree. It's an ornamental crab so the fruit is small.
Got my mammogram results and all is clear so happy and relieved about that.
Easter menu: ham, mashed potatoes, cabbage rolls, macaroni/cheese casserole and veggie tray with spinach dip.
Desert: carrot cake (made a decadent one that has 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of oil in it....will be sending the leftovers home with my daughter).

Lanette, what do you do with your jars of bone broth? Just keep them in the fridge?
Joy
Joy - You could keep the jars in the fridge for a few days.
I didn't roast the carcass in the oven beforehand like they often recommend with beef bones. I roasted the chicken a couple weeks ago, stuffed the carcass in a ziploc and stuck that in the freezer until yesterday when the bone-broth makers here got me all revved up, lol.
I will freeze at least a couple jars of this broth. I freeze in these wide mouth glass canning jars since I have room in my freezer. Each of these jars is about 1 1/2 cups.
We'll see if it thickens up by tomorrow morning. I like everything I'm freezing in jars to sit in the fridge overnight. Even if it doesn't thicken, I'm sure it has a lot more nutritional value than the bone broth I've been purchasing. Tastier and looks better too!
Maybe the big carrot I tossed in gave it the brownish color? Or cooking it for 24 hours? This was a "Ranger" chicken, not organic but a little higher end than what Safeway normally sells under their label.
If you are roasting one chicken per week, you have a lot of potential bone broth! Good luck!

Barbie - I'm kinda with you. The person who wants it most should call. As a result, my daughter calls me very nearly every day--as the children have arrived, she has called me more and more. I know she also worries about me more than our son does, so my voice means I'm OK. Not excusing him, he's just not that guy and never will be. I text him once a month or so just to make sure he's alive, and we usually text back and forth for an hour or two. I haven't heard his voice in two years.
Joy - So pleased your mammogram was clear!
I'm just barely here. The side effect of this latest medication is a fatigue that just makes me feel like I'm melting into the ground - I slept 9 hours last night, and then still crawled back into bed and slept for another two hours this morning. Feel like I could take another nap right now. Still better than when I was taking it in the morning and stayed nauseated all day.
Anyway, it's only a bit more than a week to go at the highest dose, and I'll begin the lower maintenance dose. If this fatigue doesn't lighten after that, I'll have to go back in and talk to them about changing my medication. I am afraid to drive at this point. I don't think I'd fall asleep, but I know that my reflexes are slowed down to the point where it would be dangerous.
Later, my lovelies,

We r both really disturbed. I CHOOSE not to call her for reasons I won’t get into. When she disowned me for those 10 years I tried calling off and on but she would never take my calls. Once we got into a speaking relationship and I moved back here to California, she was calling me everyday which was weird to me, she would even say I love you which was really weird to hear. She’s at the tail end of her life and she’s trying to make up for it. When I would go visit her she was always giving me $$$ even though I didn’t need it or tried to refuse it. I could go on and on but I’ll stop now before I start getting pissed again12 -
Thanks so much Lanette. Will definitely give this a try. I like to make homemade soups too so I think this would make a nice addition. Did you add any apple cider vinegar to your concoction. I read that a bit of acid helps break everything down. Not really sure it is necessary as it is slow cooking for a long time.

I know this is an odd question but was the chicken already roasted from Safeway? If you got it on the $5 Friday deal, they use a little smaller chickens for that sale(dh told me and he managed their deli for over 30 yrs and still works that department when he wants a few more hours)

Joy - since it was chicken, I added maybe a tablespoon of lemon juice for the acid. Had it been beef, I would have used ACV or even red wine or balsamic vinegar, depending on taste. I think adding an acid is important in the process.
I know when I've cooked a chicken carcass for a couple hours for broth, it seemed I had to strain it. This 24 hour cooking somehow sent all the sediment to the bottom of the cooker. I have a big "strainer" spoon I fished out the carcass and veggies with and what was left was pretty nice I thought.
I think it would make a wonderful addition to your soups

Kim, I am thinking about you and wishing/praying for the very best for you. My husband was an excellent patient and the caregiving still got to me. I know how hard you are working to help your Mom!
Carla: Glad you enjoyed your time in Stillwater MN!
Lisa: You will miss seeing the grands! But at least there are video calls and zoom now!
Machka9: Wow! You have great hair! Nice haircut!
Betsy: I am sorry the pressure is increased in your eyes. I am hoping/praying that the pressure comes down.
Kylia: Great being able to go to the theater with your daughter!
Sarah: Welcome
Flea: Yes, working on an estate can be time consuming. We had hoped we had things set up so we would not need to probate. But guess what? Yup, We need to probate!
Heather: Love the blossoms you posted!
Debbie: Sorry Destiny is in pain. I do go once a year to the dermatologist to have the PA look at my skin. My father died of melanoma.
Annie: I should buy some yogurt. I am not good about taking the calcium pills that I need to take in order to take Prolia for osteoporosis. Eating yogurt helps make up for this.
Grandmalle: I love your hair and your glasses! Carmine has a date! Well congrats to Carmine! That's great!
Pipcd34: Such a great job you do burning calories! If I don't exercise in the morning, I seldom exercise later.
Katla: Glad you have the library card!
My neighbor had a new baby on Wed and the family has a big blue bow on their mailbox! This has lifted my spirits. A soul leaves the world. A soul comes into the world! I have a baby gift for the family to give this week end. I have been invited to my son's in laws for Easter. I am a little nervous about this. They are a very, very nice family, but I am always concerned I will say or do the wrong thing! But I figured I would go and maybe stay 2 hours and keep it short. It is over 2 hours to get there and over 2 hours back, so a short visit will be okay. I did some weeding today and tried to get my nails done but the salon was too crowded. I had lunch with a friend which is good. I do get tired. I have lost 3 pounds this month so if that could continue, I might have more energy! Of course I ate french fries today!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia!

Debbie - this was a 4 pound fresh chicken I roasted myself, it barely fit in my dutch oven! Since it was a big boy I had to cook it for quite a while.
The rotisserie chickens probably have real good flavor too, but yes they are small. Someone here in this group - Margaret or Mary? has used the rotisserie chickens from Safeway or Costco.
I have boiled those rotisserie carcasses to make broth in the past.

Lanette thanks for the info….very helpful.

Debbie: I wanted to say about my father and the melanoma. He loved, loved, loved the beach and had very light, fair skin that burned. No amount of sun tan lotion was going to protect his skin. He was a snow bird. Cape Cod as a child and then Cape Cod and Florida once he was retired. He didn't just have a little spot of melanoma that could be removed like yourself and Machka9. His from the start was much more intensive. He was in his 80's. Best Rosemarie from Georgia5

Do you have Asian grocery stores up there?
I am sure you will find the chicken feet and most likely a decent price on the beef bones.(not sure as I haven't ever bought them. I do see the chicken feet at every one of them. They are big sellers there.
Debbie - the closest Asian store is about 30 miles from me and I never get in that direction. But there is at least one Hispanic grocery not far away. Last time I was in there, a couple years ago, they had nice veggies as I recall and everything was reasonably priced.
Here's a photo of my chicken bone - bone broth made in the crockpot. It cooked for 24 hours, and the bones were really soft - I could crush them with my fingers. It's cooling in the fridge right now, I'll be curious to see if it "sets up" at all. I didn't strain it, most of the sediment settled to the bottom. I was surprised at the rich brown color!

That looks great! Carrot🥕 yummy. The color is about the same as mine but I use the blackened skin and everything but the meat from the Costco bird. I add the ACV 2-4oz it draws the collagen and glycine from the bones.I am intrigued about bone broth. I usually roast a chicken once a week. Could I use the carcass for bone broth? Would like to make it in the slow cooker. Lanette, yours looks amazing! Would I have to roast the carcass in the oven for a bit on high heat then transfer to slow cooker with water. What about veggies....carrots, onions, celery is what I was thinking?
I get the chicken from Costco debone it. No need to roast it. I simmered mine for 72 hours and it did gel. The link I posted on here says only 24 hours. I think I read good for 3 weeks in refrigerator and 5 months in freezer.

SophieRosieMom wrote: »Kylia - glad to hear your ticker is healthy. I used to have a lot of tachycardia that gradually diminished on its own after menopause. Had several echocardiograms and wore Holter monitors in my 40's and 50's, the cardiologist couldn't track anything down needing medication, just keep an eye on it. Last year my doc put me on something, can't recall what - I think it was a BP med that was also anti-anxiety because of dealing with my DH's problems. ( My BP was off the charts when I went to see him to have my monthly cry). Anyhow, it slowed my heart rate too much, under 50! He said go off it and for about half a day, it really raced. He switched me to amlodipine for BP and all has been fine ever since. Crossing fingers everything settles down for you. Now those computers.... my sympathy! Nothing more frustrating, especially when having a business to run. Are you able to go "on paper" - write paper receipts with data entry later to update the sales and inventory accounting part?
Barbara - I forgot to mention this the other day regarding your morning tummy problem. Sometimes I take DGL tablets for a few days. Take/chew a tablet about 20 minutes before eating, three times a day prior to meals - even drinking morning tea/coffee in my case. DGL creates protective mucous in the stomach. I'm not a fan of Nexium - it works, but it can have a downside impacting our gut microbiome. You can get DGL on Amazon and in health food stores. DGL stands for Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice. I don't like licorice but this tastes fine. I'm not a doctor and don't play one on TV, lol.
Machka - You live in such a beautiful place. I am so envious of your hair, haircut looks great. Think of you often as you deal with your DH's memory challenges.
Kim - thank you for mentioning about CA inheritance laws and how this can get so complicated, hence caring for your mom at your home and keeping her out of that stream is so important at this time. Makes sense to me now. Does your sis live close enough that she could care for mom if she needed help in the future? Continued hugs for you - sounds like your therapist is top notch; setting boundaries will help a lot. We adult "kids" caring for our parents takes a lot of energy - jumping from being their child to making the adult decisions that have to be made for them, and add in the role of care giver. You are doing a great job.
Flea - thank you too for your update on your mom's estate. Sounds like she was pretty well covered with her Medicare supplemental and long term care insurance, what a relief. The situation with supporting your MIL had to be stressful! Perhaps WA State has similar laws - not having kids or parents here, it's not something I've had to think about. Crossing fingers your mom's property sale and remaining loose ends get wrapped up quickly.
Karen - how is your brother doing? Hopefully getting along well in his new digs.
Make it a fantastic Thursday, ladies!

I am so proud of him.
He went alone to DMV to update the address on his Real ID. He fills his own pill boxes and is very reliable about taking his meds. He is ordering his own food from Daily Harvest and goes to Aldi to supplement. He made his own dental appt and got there on his own. He walks to the museums, church, library, etc.; he has daily destinations. Does his own laundry, keeps his apartment relatively clean, gets to doctor’s appts on his own, and has lunch with his friend Darryl from time to time.
I got him an Amazon Prime membership, so he gets free shipping and orders his own art supplies and clothes. He lets me know when he is spending a substantial (for him) amount of money so I can be sure to transfer money from his payee account to his checking account.
He is expecting his viola-maker friend Marilyn for a 5 day visit this month, and is busy getting ready for her to stay with him in his apartment.
Thank you for asking about him!

There are certain animal parts (skin, bones, tendons, ligaments of animals and fish/shellfish) that are so rich in collagen that they make a lovely gelatin-y broth - and chicken feet are a prime example. I have never used them, but I would if they were available when I wanted to make bone broth.

Karen I forgot to mention that we are spending the night here in New Orleans! We did not have enough time to go to the places that you recommended. But we did eat at the restaurant close to the hotel called New Orleans, hamburger and seafood! it was excellent! My husband had frog legs and shrimp, and a cup of gumbo. I tried their hamburger with grilled onion, bacon, and shredded pepper. Jack cheese piled high! It was excellent! The sides were deep, fried onion rings with their sauce, which was very good, and butter, garlic, potato wedges, which were to die for! Not authentic New Orleans food but we will save her that when we are on our way back home, and take the walking food tour!

If we didn't mention religion then no one would be talking about Easter or Christmas or going to church or what people are giving up for Lent. We just don't debate religious topics or have conversations that say that my religion or spiritual path has the answers everyone needs.

Machka Thank you for the information on Auditory Processing Disorders. My oldest granddaughter was diagnosed with that and dyslexia. Made school really hard. Will try to remember some of the tips.
Lanette- So the computer saga continued today as the main was updating from 8:30 this morning until 3 this afternoon! We reverted to paper, but were slowed down by having to go to each manufacturer to look up parts pricing. But I did it!!!! Got everything put into the computer after we closed. That was not fun, but I did it. I have so much to still do as I couldn't work on invoicing today, but at least most of today's promises were delivered. Just got home at 8:30 tonight trying to set up tomorrow for success. Of course everyone (even if they just brought mowers in 3 days ago) wants their mowers for Easter weekend.
Moms.....I haven't actually spoken to my mother in 3 years.....and that time was because she couldn't get hold of my sister! My parents were both alcoholics and mother is narcissistic and just plain mean. I haven't seen her since the Christmas that I bought her a plane ticket, arranged her to have an escort, and brought her here for Christmas. That was probably 7 or 8 years ago I am thinking. Her "thanks" was the next time I want to do something like that, just send her the money so she can drive and spend the night at a hotel on the way. No thank you! The last time she drove here she was here for 7 weeks! It about ended my young marriage. Anyway, my sister is currently on her way to see mom's situation first hand. Alzheimer's runs in the family. Our aunt is currently in a full time care facility near our brother. My sister is a wonderful negotiator and will do what she feels is best for mom.
Speaking of my sister.....she told me that I am an amazing person! She said my caring for family and hard working attitude are amazing. That was my feel good moment for the evening. DH still mad that I stayed at work late.......
Posting this since kind of long before I move on to page 20.
