I fell behind on posting here... Again!
I've been out camping with my parents, so lots of walking around the campground and elsewhere. I only logged a few of the walks, but I was definitely getting exercise! My mom has been really struggling with side effects from the meds she's on the keep cancer in remission (almost 3 years now!!) so I've been spending a lot of time with her.
@SummerSkier I keep joking that I have so many hobbies that I don't have enough time to go to work. I like to crochet, and often pair that with binge-watching a TV show while I stitch away at a project. I play a few instruments, and I get hired by a local symphony and local schools to play for musicals. School theater is always a blast, especially working with student musicians who are always so excited to get to play a live show. I also play board games/card games, but that's really more my husband's fun activity that I join in more to spend time with him than because it's my favorite.4 -
Thank you @quilteryoyo, @scott6255, @TheMrWobbly and @Teresa502! Good to "see" you all, and thanks for good thoughts.
I am feeling really well and I walked about 5 miles yesterday with Stella. It was a nice cool day and we strolled around the lakes with lots of breaks for wading in and drinking (her, not me). I did not feel (more) sore after that so I take it as a good sign.
@TheMrWobbly I was struggling with trying to get back to running and had the same kind of feeling that why was I still dreading it every time? I may try C5k to try to get back to it when I'm cleared to run again. I also may add in other activities than running on a more regular basis because "just running" right now doesn't seem appealing.
Hope you are all having a good Sunday.7 -
Grey and drizzling. It is not typical getting rain this time of year.
My new shoes, Asics GT-2000, are an upgrade over my last brand. Not perfect, but I like them so far.

Posting two days today.
Yesterday I had intended to do a long run early, before heading out for my great niece's second birthday party. But, I slept a little later than intended and mom wanted to do some shopping on our way through town, so I cut it short. I did quarter mile intervals on the treadmill...walk/ran at 3.8/6.0,5.0, (3 x 5.5) mph. Six mph felt too fast, five mph was too slow, so my Goldie Locks speed was 5.5 mph. It felt fairly easy.
I didn't sleep good last night, so, after lunch, I took a nap before heading out for 2 miles of driveway laps late this afternoon.4 -
@ScienceofTeaching Hugs to your mom. I know that is hard. Sounds like you got lots of activity in your days.
@katharmonic That sounds like a great walk and that Stella really enjoyed it. I might have been tempted to wade in with her.2 -

This weekend marked 10 years since I ran my first half-marathon. I wasnβt able to run the race yesterday due to a family graduation cookout so today I took myself to the Virginia Creeper Trail (a rails-to-trails) and ran 13.1. The longest that Iβve ran this year non-stop has been 12 miles and the last time I did that was in March. Iβve been hiking 14 and 20 mile days up and down these Appalachian mountains with 25 pounds on my back so I wasnβt really worried about being able to finish. My finish time wasnβt a PR but I did it. I then did some retail therapy and bought myself an overly priced but ultra light new backpack, followed by a visit to a coffee shop where I got a mocha and grilled cheese sandwich, and then to the produce store. I was planning to ride my bike this afternoon but itβs been rainy so I ditched that idea.
@Summerskier - For fun I hike and sometimes camp, ride my bike, hang out with friends, and I love to travel. I feel accomplished after a run, but can't really include that activity in the fun category.
Hope everyone has had a great Sunday!

I am back home from Austin and my daughter is doing well. I got out for a run this morning, but I only made it 8 miles. I was extra tired and it was extra hot and I decided that 8 was enough.
Thanks for the well wishes for my daughter @eleanorhawkins, @quilteryoyo, @tarun_yadava, @teresa502, @martaindale, @scott6255, @themrwobbly and @summerskier.
@katharmonic I 'm sorry you are back in recovery mode, but glad you were able to get the surgery done and behind you. Hope you feel better soon.

Morning everyone! Hope you all had a nice weekend.
New shoes - felt nice but don't think they've solved anything. Booked a session with a chiropodist. Have slight flat feet and have an orthotic insole. Could be that over time that's eroded slightly, so want to get that avenue ticked off.
Anyways. Upto 4.5 M total today5 -
Hey Everyone!
I haven't been posting lately. But I have caught up reading everyting!
@kgirlhart I am glad to hear that your daughter is ok! I wish her a speedy recovery!
@tarun_yadavA I am so sorry to hear that your knee is still being a pain! That really sucks. You are doing all you can to be able to run and in the meantime you are still able to workout- so you are making the best of the situation. You can't really do any more than that.
@AlphaHowls You sound like a real summer runner . I wish I could grab onto that same energy when the weather warms up, but it usually zaps a lot of my motivation and drive. I do love being able to run in shorts and a tank top and no hastle around with all the layers of clothing though.
@SummerSkier Fun? Good question. I think first I would have to define what fun is. You can do an activity knowing that it might be fun, but I believe fun itself can't be planned for. It's like a flow state and you usually realize you had fun after it's over (which I think is super weird). So, to answer your question, what do I do to potentially get into the fun flow state , I would say mostly going on micro-adventures with the kids or by myself (even when running), and experiencing life and joy in those moments. Important is that the "fun" is not too planned or too forced, but spontaneous and usually somewhat unexpected.
So, now to running! Man, I have had a hard time these past weeks. First, with the pinced nerve (back still is bothering me- I am going to start physical therapy soon), then came wave after wave of illness (myself and children). I am still not feeling nearly like I was before hurting my back. I think it's everything together- not being acclimated to warm weather, having to stop running because of my back, then also getting sick. That all sounds quick negative, but I wanted to end on a postive note. I DID run today. I finished an 8 km run. That's the longest I have run since the 30th of May. It was NOT fun, but I did it and I am very proud and happy that I did. Let's see how tomorrow goes .
Yesterday, I tried to run, but only got in 1.6km, so the 8km today is a 500% increase of yesterday's performance. I will take it as a win.
So far for June 28.5/250km - and as of now, I am lowering my monthly goal by 100 km. It would not be good for my recovery/injury prevention to just jump back and go on so many back to back long runs and it will motivate me more at this point if I can set a goal that I can also reach. So I'm doing it .6 -
@Teresa502 Congrats on getting that HM done! You are amazing.
@kgirlhart So glad that you are back home and your daughter is doing well.
@tarun_yadavA Glad you were able to run further. A mile is a mile no matter how long it takes you to get there. Also glad to see you are going to a doc to have things checked out.
@Laurz9191 Glad you are recovering from all of the injuries and sickness. You did great and have a great plan going forward.

I love this insight! Thank you!!!! ππππ1 -

@Laurz9191 aww thanks Laura! And well done on getting a nice long run in today
@quilteryoyo thank you π1 -
What do YOU do for fun?
I need to put some time and thought into this. I will answer though.1 -
What do YOU do for fun?
: what provides amusement or enjoyment
specifically : playful often boisterous action or speech
Synonyms:
delight
distraction
diversion
divertissement
entertainment
pleasure
recreation
I am going to take 'fun' from this definition.
To me, fun is relative, personal and 'in the moment'. What I consider fun may not be fun for another. I have a great deal of joy, pleasure in running. I do not find racing fun. I am not a people/crowd person. I do enjoy racing when my running partner (A/B or both) are with me. This is my fun. My recreation, pleasure is running distance. Just how far can I go? Over the last year, I have come back to photography. This was something I really enjoyed a long time ago. I participated in a challenge that brought this love back to me. Fun defined by my lens, joy, verve, life. Fun is as simple as 'what makes me smile."
I find great joy in yard work and sunrises. I have three outdoor frogs that amuse me to no end. Yes, I know there are many more frogs than that, but in my world/enjoyment, there are three that live at my house. (Kermit, Gizmo, and Robin if you want to know). I raise elephant (ears) and herd them around the yard. The elephants tickle me with the things they do. I am amused when they dance (shake the ears) with water. Yes, I do talk to them.
Over the last 8 years since turning my life around, I have experienced different fun and joys in my life. I have lost over 100 lbs. I now run distance and find ways to keep moving. I have maintained my weight loss and learned new things along the way. I enjoy meal prep, weighing out my food, tasting/trying new things. I feel satisfaction/joy in knowing I am keeping my temple healthy.
Over the last six years, I have tuned in more to my Christian faith. I changed the music I listen to and now will sing (to myself). I find joy in learning to be a prayer warrior. I find joy in quiet space, meditation, discipline.
My fun is simple: I love to color, play with texture, solve a puzzle. I play neopets and love the little characters. I love animals, mostly dogs, but I do not have any right now. I find joy in water and playing with my food. I also have a strange affection for rocks. I like reading, but not overjoyed about it like my brother is.
What is fun for one may not be fun for all. It is personal and never let anyone squash that little child inside. My fun can change, my joy is alive and moves. HAHA like making bread, feed it, play with it, cook it, eat it, care for it, change the flavor every so often.
Some of these have literally traveled miles as I find them and bring them home.
Yes, I realize this is more than any of you wanted to know, but every so often I make a stab at being 'social'/participating.

You are the Half-Marathon a day person? Awesome.
My current goal is to lose 100 lbs. I fantasize about having a running t-shirt made with "I lost one hundred pounds. Ask me how" printed on the back.
I don't know why, but that amuses me.8 -
@chris_in_cal not wise, have just learnt the hard way too many times π€£1
-
WOW! I love your "fun" @AlphaHowls πππ I too enjoy photography esp of animals and nature. I love being able to capture the beauty into a photo. Not sure that it is totally fun. I am still trying to figure that out but I think it is laughing uncontrollably and in the moment whatever it is is fun.2

Hi All, just checking in, not because I have done any runs since my last check in, but just to keep me on the momentum of at least 2 runs a week. I've made a plan of how to increase my kms to get to my 14km goal by August in time for the City2Surf. This week will be 7km and 8km. The weather forecast this week is looking great, so I can't see any reason not to get out this week! The plan at the moment is Wednesday and Friday, but I like to listen to my body, particularly if it is sore from a strength workout the day before. Have a great week everyone! πββοΈπ8

@spl8 hope things get easier for you!
Nice encouraging words @chris_in_cal.
@AlphaHowls loved your descriptions of fun!
I am hard-pressed to think of things I do for fun. Running is what I do 90% of the time I get to myself. Other than that, as I've gotten older, I am appreciating family time more and more Especially since the kids moved 3 and 4 hours away. I enjoy golf, but only play 1-2 times per year. Used to scuba dive, but haven't done so in over 7 years or so.
Much of the time work is kinda fun, but inevitably a customer has outrageous expectations or requests that make it frustrating and maddening.
All that said, I did 6 TM miles after work.

Yesterday's run was a 1/2 mile longer than I planned because I came back home and dropped Dakota off and went out again. This warmer weather doesn't suit him but he still wants to go.
02/06 3.63 miles
03/06 3.71 miles
06/06 3.61 miles
10/06 3.72 miles
11/06 3.02 miles
12/06 4.13 miles
Total 21.81/50 miles
On the "What I do for fun" question I realised most of my activities like running, spin bike, swimming are more to relax and de-stress as I spend most of my time feeling anxious or rushed. I'm self -employed so I always feel the pressure of someone always waiting for something. I do like to meeting up with my sisters when they're home for lunch, drinks, spa day.6 -
Morning everyone!
Got in a 4Miler... Phasing in back-to-back runs... Elliptical tomorrow!
Oh... For those not on Strava... My mother's fridge freezer... π«£
From protein shakes ... To Caramel-Chocolate Magnum Ice-cream bars! π€¦
Haha
The fun thing...
Daily: My runs (can't wait to get back to my 'ushe' - the pacy 9K loops), 'take-my-mind off it' movie or series (usually comedy or sci-fi/horror... Don't do Drama! Life is serious/depressing enough! Haha!)
Monthly: guys night. Beers, wings... Big Mac and Nugget box! Haha.
Quarterly... Not sure if this works as 'fun' (more passion, I think?). Travel. Travel as much and as far as I can. Solo, with a buddy, with family... Whatever. See something new. Meet new people. Eat/drink something new.

Got up early to look at radar...mostly clear. So got ready for my run. As I am heading out the door I get a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Oh well, already committed. So I do my workout (1mi WU/CD, 7x1:00 @8:09-8:24 pace with 1:00 easy rest). Garmin gave me an execution score of 16% (epic fail) due to not staying on target (averaged 7:50 pace). Sorry Garmin. I'll try harder next time π
As I was about 3 miles from home, it started thundering/lightening/raining. It felt awesome. Then a couple lightning strikes were VERY loud and getting close, so glad I got home when I did.

Hi everyone, life is crazy busy as usual but I'm reading, liking and hugging.
I escaped for a 5 mile race on Saturday evening with a group of friends... it was HOT and humid and the pack went out way too fast resulting in me running it a lot harder and faster than intended, but we had a blast as you can see from my face in the photosETA: my expression probably also does a pretty good job of answering the What do you do for fun? question!10 -
Hey @martaindale which salt tabs do you take?
I use the salt stick fast chews. You can buy a multipack with different flavors on Amazon. The first pack I had had lime and orange, both of which were good. This time I bought a bigger one with a wider variety of flavors so I have some new stuff to try out. I think you'll really like them. I can absolutely tell the difference they make.
