@katharmonic Good luck on your recovery. I'm glad you were able to move things around and get the next phase done early. The fat grafting surgery is intense!SummerSkier wrote: »What do YOU do for fun?
I ❤️❤️❤️ travelling! I have really missed it the last few years. This past year I and my family have slowly started getting out more and it's awesome! I also like to read and am getting more into plants/gardening.
@tarun_yadavA I saw in your Strava where you mentioned ignoring pace altogether while you recover. YES! Do that. In the long run taking it easier on your daily runs will help you recover and keep you healthy.7 -
@eleanorhawkins You look like you're having a blast!2

I did an hour on the treadmill at the hotel our first day here. I had planned an outdoor run but after scouting a little, I wasn't sure this area was super conducive to running in the afternoon. Lots of traffic, people, and too many homeless with mental health challenges confronting people. If I weren't alone, it would have fine, but not alone.
Idk if I will get out for another run this trip but I brought 1 more set of clothes just in case.
We are in southern CA. So far we went universal studios (the theme park), toured the El Capitan and Chinese theaters, went to Jim Henson studios, ate at Tam O'Shanter, went bowling, and more. We don't sit still very well on vacation.
Today we are touring Disney Imagineering and the Disney movie studios before heading to Disneyland for a few days. We brought my kid to Disneyland when they were 5. They don't remember much of that trip so it will be fun for them. When we were here last they were in full mega princess mode. Not so much now.7 -

Funny, we're going to Paris in August and mini-me, who has never really had a princess mode and is into anime and weird video games and stuff and who also never wants to go anywhere or do anything outside her bedroom, is mega excited to go to Euro Disney and see Mickey Mouse, and says she's going to buy and wear a headband thing with Minnie ears on :-o

Beach beach beach!!!!
Rent a boogieboard and get into that frigid 63° (17C) water. It hurts, but nobody ever regrets getting wet. It feels so good to get out. (Kinda sounds like running;)

martaindale wrote: »Hey @martaindale which salt tabs do you take?
I use the salt stick fast chews. You can buy a multipack with different flavors on Amazon. The first pack I had had lime and orange, both of which were good. This time I bought a bigger one with a wider variety of flavors so I have some new stuff to try out. I think you'll really like them. I can absolutely tell the difference they make.

Hi everyone.
Update from me...
Think we have solved the case!
Staying at my mother's. Next door neighbour is a physio. Saw me this evening (pro bono) as a neighbourly favour.
So- looks like a 'perfect storm' double whammy of what was a muscle tweak combined with an orthotic insole just wearing out (I have flat feet) has caused MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) inflammation.
So when I tweaked my gastrocnemius back in April, the weight bearing changed. And as the insoles had lost their shape (lift) somewhat over time, the weight bearing caused the MCL to get inflamed.
The first physio didn't spot this. He just assumed it was gastrocnemius specific and just gave some generic advice... Ice, raise, don't run, a few exercises yaddi yadda yadda.
So- will probably refrain from running for another week-10 days or so, just to play it safe! New insoles won't come till July probably...
(Cue to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel 🎵 <<Hello Elliptical My Old Friend...>> )
Physio2 has recommended a couple of exercises, Heat-Ice pack-Heat (!!) - at least twice a day, and lay off running for a bit and get the insoles sorted as a priority.
Anyways..
Will tune back in towards the end of the month!8 -
June Goal: 105 Miles
6/1: 6.25 miles
6/3: 10.25 miles
6/6: 7.05 miles
6/7: 6.55 miles
6/8: 3.11 miles
6/11: 8.36 miles
6/13: 6.26 miles
47.83/105 miles completed for June
I ran 6.25 miles today. It was cloudy and humid and warm. There was a light breeze which helped it not be miserable. I did see a skunk, but other than that it was an uneventful run.
Thanks for the well wishes for my daughter @Laurz9191 and @quilteryoyo. She's doing well, but unfortunately she won't be able to attend the family reunion this weekend. 😔
@summerskier Re: what do I do for fun. I actually consider running and yoga to be things that I do for fun. But I also have "girl's night" with my mom and sisters. We try to get together weekly. I live in the same town as my mom and two of my sisters, so it is usually just the four of us, but occasionally my other two sisters will make it.
@eleanorhawkins Those race photos are fantastic! You look like you are having a blast!
@tarun_yadava I am glad you figured out the issue.

The training plan has me do a mile "time trial" this weekend. I've been shuffling along for a couple of months. It is going to be interesting (fun?) to attempt to run for a mile 'fast.'
June Running Goal: 17 runs, 45 miles- June 2 - 3.0 miles
- June 4 - 4.0 miles
- June 6 - 2.5 miles
- June 7 - 4.0 miles
- June 9 - 2.5 miles
- June 11-3.5 miles
- June 13-3.0 miles

Well I may have jinxed myself talking about injuries, but I'm hoping I've paused early enough that it won't hang around. My dodgey hip likes to keep me guessing 😖 stopped at 3km today. Will wait until it feels settled before trying again. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼8

I haven't been able to resist some longer runs this week, even though I was planning on an easier week. I've been feeling good while running, so it was too hard to stop at the shorter distances. I'm very proud of the 5 mile runs, I love seeing the progress I've been making.
I really need to ease up on the running for the rest of the week to get ready for my hike on Saturday. I think I'll do 3 miles today and then rest Thursday and Friday. This will take me just over half way to my month goal of 75 miles.10 -

This is fantastic. Runner's High?
Push it when you should, don't push it when you shouldn't. In being here one month now you are really doing some good running!4 -
well it's obvious to me who the "real" runners are in this group based on the SMILES on their faces when they are running. 😉🌟😂🤣🙃 Love the fun discussion.
Next up - VO2 max thoughts. So mine has been dropping a little bit since I injured my lower back/ hip/ whatever in late April. My May mileage was down and then I got a cold in June so my running has been limited. At first I thought the VO2 max was dropping because I was injured or ill but as I recover from both setbacks it seems like it was dropping because I was losing conditioning. 😏 And I am totally NOT impressed by how fast that has happened - in less than 2 months I went from 40.5 to 38.5 on my watch. It's JUST not fair how quickly you do that when you can gain 5 pounds in one sitting. jeez.
I will admit I am still on the struggle bus a little bit but this new insight gives me motivation to turn the stats around!
Todays run was pretty awful. NOT FUN! Dew point was 72. AQC was 72 (moderate due to smoke I think) and temp was almost 80. But I presevered for a 5K somehow. My cold is better. yes! My other injury is healing - I don't think about it or feel like I have to have ice on it all the time and I stopped taking pain killers daily so altho it's not 100 percent small clues tell me it IS getting better.

I love your post about what you do for fun @AlphaHowls .
@tarun_yadavA Sometimes it's hard to be around those tasty treats. Enjoy, but in moderation. Glad you got a second opinion. Sounds like they know what they are talking about. I hope the new insoles do the trick for you. Sorry your going to have to lay off running longer though.
@Scott6255 Great running. I think Garmin is silly. If I had an epic fail it would certainly be in the other direction...slow as a turtle. Glad you got home before the storm was too bad.
Nice job on yur race @eleanorhawkins . Love the pictures.
@martaindale Sounds like you are having a great trip. Enjoy the rest of your vacation.
@felicityb2026 I hope your hip feels better soon.
You're doing great @Zaxa2021 . I hope you enjoy your hike and share some pictures with us.
@SummerSkier I'm sorry you're run was a struggle. It is disheartening when you're conditioning diminishes so quickly, but I think it will come back quickly too. Hang in there. You are such an inspiration.
I love the discussions on what you do for fun. I'll try to participate myself soon.
This week has been really busy so far. I've caught up with everyone now, I think. I didn't comment on everyone, but I'm on my phone and don't text well. Trying to catch up while at work and the kids are sleeping.
I'll try to post my workouts later today.7 -
@SummerSkier If it makes you feel any better, my VO2 max just went down as well . It had been at the same number for quite some time and just went down a point. It is of course not what one hopes for in training, but to be honest it does reflect my current abilities. In the past month, I was injured, then sick, then was just sick again so between heat adjustment, illness and injury, I haven’t been training the same amount or at the same level.
Overall though, I think the main thing is to get back at it slowly and with grace and eventually the pieces will fall back into place.
That said, after taking a 2 unplanned rest days no thanks to the norovirus , I am really looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow! I also will start physical therapy for my back injury tomorrow as well!
@AlphaHowls Definitely inspired by your “fun” post!
@chris_in_cal Good luck on your time trial!6 -

Yesterday it was warm and cloudy and humid. Today was the same, plus it was foggy. It was 75°F, 100% humidity and dew point 75. It was pretty tough. But I woke up a little early this morning and even though the weather wasn't pleasant, I still ran 7 miles and it wasn't a bad run. I saw a skunk and the usual cats and squirrels. I also ran face first into a spider web. That wasn't great, but overall it was an OK run.

Got in a quick 6 TM miles after work.

I ran an old route I haven't been on in several years. I'm still shuffling and struggling, but it felt good to be laced up and actually back in one of my old spot.
There is a 5 miles complete circle running track on a reservoir around here, that was my hands down goto back in the day. I'm looking forward to launching on that five mile run sometime soon.

I haven't checked in the past few days... I'm actually pleasantly surprised I'm not feeling worse than I am right now, with all I've been up to, with the crazy weekend, lots of yard work (and lots of breaks, but I did enough work to get DOMS in my legs!), and a kid's birthday party yesterday. The party really did me in though. I'm resting today and going back to no sugar or flour for at least a few days. Trust me, I've had plenty to last me quite a while. The ONLY exception I'm making is my daily protein/probiotic/BCAA shake that has some sugar in it. After I use up my premixed powders (they're already in shakers for the next couple days), I may leave out the sugary element and see how it tastes without it. I've found it's hard to have "just a little" when it comes to sugar. It really does makes you want more. Much easier for me to not have any at all.
My "yard mountain" now has most of the brush cleared off of it and burnt, and the vines have been ripped up (I was careful as I'm only 7 weeks post-hernia surgery) and are piled on a tarp hopefully drying out a bit before we burn them. Don't want to smoke out the entire neighborhood. Turns out that in addition to some potentially great ground, there are also piles of dumped ashes in there. So we're trying to get those out of there. Fortunately the city collects ashes, so it's just a matter of filling the can. The squash army is growing and really needs planted, but I'm not there yet. I hope they don't get angry and die on me.
Before and "in progress":
Oh, and a smore from the other day:
Happy Running (or Ellipticalling or Recovering) Everyone!

Dang @polskagirl01 that smore looks incredible!!
Got 7 miles in this morning. Felt like running in Florida...75F, 100% humidity, 73F dew point. That being said, I took a salt tablet after about 2 miles, then another after about 4 miles, and although I looked like I came out of a swimming pool, I didn't feel as miserable as usual. Actually felt better at the end than the beginning. I really think those helped (or it was a placebo effect). But I'll keep trying them and see if it continues to help. Thank you for the suggestion @martaindale!!!
Oh, and Garmin gave me a beautiful 1% Execution Score for my workout!!
8 -
I bought some of those salt tabs recommended but I am not running far enough to need them. Maybe playing tennis will require. But they taste REALLY salty to me. 😳😂✅1
-
I get you on the VO2 max @SummerSkier as mine hasn't moved in 5 weeks. After I added in swimming and cycling to the programme it hasn't budged and my garmin is saying my training is "Unproductive".
Well I say I am cream crackered afterwards so it better darn well be productive.
Have run 5 days with visitors, support a a charity bike ride and the heat meaning I was focused on indoor cycling. Back to the grind later. I hope to find the joy soon!
I know it is only Thursday but have a great weekend everyone!6 -

It's a stereotype that easterners don't smile much.

@kgirlhart You did great in those conditions. Running your face into a spider web is the worst!
You're doing great @chris_in_cal !
You're doing great @polskagirl01 . So glad you seem to be having a bit more energy lately. That s'mores looks really good.
Great running @Scott6255 . Glad the salt tabs are working for you.

This morning I ran 10.3 km. It wasn't easy after so many off days and all the illness. There was a nice cool breeze on the way out which definitely maybe the out much nicer than te back.
I struggled a bit after 6km and realized eventually that my heart rate was a lot higher than I wanted it to be (which explained my struggle), so I slowed down my last 2 km to recovery pace. Tomorrow I plan on going on a shorter run, at lunch time. Fingers crossed it won't be scorching .
Garmin is telling me I am "strained" at the moment. I happen to currently believe my watch . I'll get through it.
@scott6255 Congrats on the 1% .
@polskagirl01 Agree, the smore looks very nice. That is one massive yard pile too! That looks like a ton of work!
KMs for June 38.8/150.

Hi @kgirlhart and @martaindale. Thanks for your good thoughts! Good to see you again. @martaindale enjoy your vacation!
I had my post-surgery follow-up today and I feel a mix of encouraged and disappointed. All is healing well, but I need to be more patient. I think because this surgery was so much easier physically on me I was hopeful to get back to activity sooner, but that's not going to be the case. In order not to jeopardize the results, I need to be more careful for longer. So 5 more weeks until my next follow-up and I am not allowed to run, or lift more than 10 pounds, and should be careful about raising my arms above my shoulders until at least then. And there is the possibility that there may need to be future revisions anyway.
So, ok, I can do this. Lots of walking. In a week or two I can get in the water, so I'm thinking I will try to add some aqua running and some light swimming or at least kickboarding. Probably some not too intense biking is ok. And of course hiking! Add in hopefully a vacation in there and I should be good!
I was pretty down and tired of the whole thing last night. But I'm feeling better and overall it's gone as well as I could probably hope for, so one foot in front of the other and forward is a pace!9
