You should have brought those cats home @AlphaHowls though don't put them on your lap!
Feeling for those even hotter than my little patch. Decided to do my first 5k continuous running for 2.5 years today so went out at 6:30am to avoid the heat. At 6:50am I heard the thunder, at 6:52am I was running through a river that was trying to pretend it was the Cuckoo Trail. My gortex shoes are great though the big hole where my foot goes is clearly a bit of a weak spot!
Still made it in 37:59. Jumped straight in the shower and off to work. I think the dog was happy not to be with me today.
Nearly forgot to mention that my work, who started this all off, have entered me for a charity spot in the London marathon in April. Fortunately the London marathon is always oversubscribed so the chances of me having to be ready for April are very slim.
Hope your week is going well. Cheers!10 -
Nice run yesterday @Laurz9191 . Sorry you struggled though. Humidity makes such a huge difference.
Great Canary Island run @martaindale . I hope your landscapers are able to take lots of breaks and spend some time in the shade.
Great running @Scott6255 . Congrats on your VO2Max increase. I thought mine was decent and it's only 37.
@kgirlhart Glad you enjoyed your family reunion, for the most part. Family dynamics can be so hard. Great running, and, yes, that qualifies as a long run. Those temps for the run were brutal...the afternoon ones were just beyond awful!
Glad you got your watch fixed @Glow87 . Great running.
@TheMrWobbly Congrats on the continuous 5K. I didn't realize you were getting ready for the London Marathon. That's pretty cool. Even if your chances of getting in are slim, it is giving you motivation for running. That's a win.
I promise, I am keeping up my exercise and I will try to post later today. The critical word there is try.5 -
This past weekend I hiked on the Appalachian Trail on Friday (14.1 miles) and Saturday (15.67 miles). We camped at a shelter on the trail on Friday night. Most of the north bounders heading to Maine have already passed thru where we were but we met a few of the late starters who were heading north. I saw three snakes, a couple of mama deer and their new babies, and a mama bear and her three cubs. The last group had my heart racing the most. As I came up the trail and encountered them off the trail to the side, mama decided she was going to chase one of her cubs to get it away from the area. Well the cub took off running in my direction with mama in pursuit. Thankfully, they hung a right and went down the hill a little. As my hiking partner caught up with me, she was able to see them from a respectful distant.
Yesterday, I ran 5.27 miles but Garmin was not being cooperative and would not give me my run information until last night. This morning after a dumbbell workout, I got in a short 3.39 miles bringing my monthly total to 56.01 miles. Flying out of the country today for vacation. I’ve packed some running clothes but not sure if I will get any running done in between being a tourist and trying to see all the sights.

Have a great vacation! A couple of years ago when I was really running well I vacationed in Madrid, and I ran in their big central park, it was a memorable highlight.
5 -
@Teresa502 Have a nice vacation! I always pack my running clothes on vacation too . The results are mixed, but I like knowing that I have my stuff.
Today’s run was a real sweat fest in the unaircondioned gym! They had the window (yes only one) open but there was no wind. It was so hot and humid. To motivate myself I had a bottle of water and let myself have a sip every 5 minutes. When the hour was up, the bottle was empty and I was drenched but happy I made it through the slog. My heart rate kept getting into the red even though I kept a below average pace and so felt physically quite good for a change. It was just the heat. Tomorrow I am getting out for my run early! I managed 9km, but my watch and Strava think I did 10…. I forgot to calibrate my watch and Strava always overestimates my treadmill distances…
It really helps motivate me knowing that there are other heat/humidity suffering runners! I guess my misery loves company;). If you guys can get through it, I will too .
So far for June 62.4km/150km.7 -
Hi all, I finally caught up on the 70 messages that were posted while I was gone dealing with family stuff. I have done more walking than running, but I've managed to get a few miles in. The ticker isn't updating, so I'm not posting it.
I was in NC visiting my mom for a couple of days and hated the heat (ran on the treadmill at the hotel instead of outside to avoid it), so I feel much sympathy for all the Texans in this group. Dang, y'all are tough. (Salt tablets or not, your conditions are brutal.)
5 -
6 TM miles after work. Did NOT feel like dealing with the heat/humidity this morning.
I rescheduled the speed interval workout for Friday on Garmin and did just an easy run, but apparently my watch didn't get the memo. But at least the critique was polite..."Room to Grow" 😄
6 -
@Teresa502 That bear encounter sounds intense and scary! Glad they veered away. Otherwise, the hike sounds great. Enjoy your vacation.
Great running @Laurz9191 . Garmin always underestimates my distance on the treadmill.
hahaha @Scott6255 . Love the kind critique. Great treadmill run!3 -
@scott6255 😂"room to grow"! Come on Garmin! It really helps motivate me knowing that there are other heat/humidity suffering runners! I guess my misery loves company;). If you guys can get through it, I will too .
We can all struggle together! That's a tough treadmill run. I have 3, seriously 3, fans blowing on me. 1 on my legs, the one on the treadmill blows on my stomach, and a clip on fan for my face. The moving air makes it a lot more tolerable.
@Teresa502 Have fun on vacation. I don't often plan to run while traveling but I also like to pack a couple of outfits just in case.
Great job on completing your 5k @TheMrWobbly! Making really good progress!6 -

It looks like I haven't posted my workouts since June 11 - that's 10 days! I didn't realize it was that long, so I'll try to be brief.
Monday, June 12: Worked 8 - 5 then did driveway laps after work. It was late when I got done, so decided to try something different on Tuesday.
Tues, June 13: We had assessment by the state at work and passed. The class I was in was NOT picked for the in depth assessment this time. I did a closet clothes change (my best Clara Kent impersonation) once the kids went to sleep and then did a walk/run around town during my break. I did a wun, using segments to separate the walking times from the runs. I was pleased that the run avg pace was 11:16 min/mile.
Wed, June 14: I did my Clara Kent impersonation again, but this time did a walk only during my break. Still, I averaged 4.1 mph.
Thurs, June 15: Decided on a nap during my break. I did change clothes after work and did a 2 mile walk around town. I didn't feel like I was walking real fast, but again, it was a 4.1 mph avg. pace. Afterwards, I met friends and we played doubles tennis for 2 hours.
Friday, June 16: I hadn't slept well all week, so again opted for a nap during my break. After work, I spent 51 minutes push mowing, trimming tree limbs, weed eating, and leaf blowing. Then, I did a 2 mile treadmill walk.
Saturday, June 17: I volunteered at our local Relay For Life event in the morning. When I got home I ate a bite and then went down to mow my mom's lawn. I did some of the push mowing and all of the riding mower. Our neighbor did the weed eating. I had about 1.5 hours after we finished before we needed to leave again for a picnic at another neighbor's house. So, I did a treadmill wun for the time I had available. I ran 0.45 miles at 4.3 mph and walked 0.8 miles at 3.8 mph. I hated to not get in 2 miles, but I just didn't have the time.
Sunday, June 18: I did a 2 mile driveway walk after church, lunch at a Mexican restaurant with neighbors, and a nap.
Monday, June 19: Yesterday, I didn't feel very good all day. I had a low grade fever that made me achy. I did manage to do some housework and get in a 2 mile walk on the treadmill.
Today, I felt much better. Still, I decided to take it easy, so did a 2.25 mile treadmill walk. I was surprised at the difference in my HR from yesterday and today. Yesterday, my Avg HR was 104 with a max of 115 bpm. Today it was an avg of 89 with a max of 97 bpm. I guess my body was working harder to fight off whatever the fever was all about.
I was just pleased that I managed to do as much as I did when I worked everyday last week. It wasn't easy, but I did it. This week shouldn't be even close to as busy, as I'm not scheduled to work at all, but, being a sub, you never know when you will be needed.7 -
June Goal: 105 Miles
6/1: 6.25 miles
6/3: 10.25 miles
6/6: 7.05 miles
6/7: 6.55 miles
6/8: 3.11 miles
6/11: 8.36 miles
6/13: 6.26 miles
6/14: 7.02 miles
6/15: 6.02 miles
6/19: 8.26 miles
6/20: 6.05 miles
75.18/105 miles completed for June
It was 78°F this morning at 5:30. It was hot, but easier to deal with in the morning before the sun was up, so it was a better run than yesterday. I ran 6 miles. We reached 111° this afternoon.(That was the real temperature. I don't know what the feels like temperature was). I am somewhat used to the heat since I have lived in Texas most of my life. but I don't think that anyone ever really gets used to 100+ degrees. It is 9:00 now and it is still 96° feels like 109°. The forecast for tomorrow morning at 5 is 81° so it looks like it will be another hot run.

My word. Yes you did. That is impressive keeping up with all those responsibilities.

As usual for me, absolutely nothing about running in this post...
I'm trying to keep my head above water with cleaning and packing for my trip to the US.
Just went out to water the Squash Army, and a number of the plants seem very happy with the arrangement so far, and have definitely grown. Of course, after making several trips with the watering can (we need an attachment for the hose, there aren't any outdoor water spouts and the hose has to go through the basement window to a sink).... I got an alert that thunderstorms may be headed our way today. Oh well. Also I saw a hedgehog in the yard a few nights ago... last night my son went out at about the same time, just after dark, and saw some sort of ferret. The hedgehog is welcome, but the ferret can move along.
I don't even know if this is butternut squash or some kind of regular pumpkin 🤣 OR maybe some alien species that will be taking over shortly.
Most of the marigolds I planted are not sprouting, and I'm running out of my saved seeds from a friend in my previous city. I just need enough to grow, to get seeds to continue the process and keep the flowers going. Last year's attempt also failed when everything died during a drought while I was away. They grew so nicely, year after year, in their spot in my previous city, I just had to throw down seed and walk away. I might need to take a chance and plant more in different locations and just see what's there when I get back.6 -
Morning all
After a week of ellipticalling and heat-ice-heat -ing it... Decided to try a jog. Ok! Bit of discomfort towards the end - But not too bad. Will try this distance and this pace for the foreseeable future. Orthotic insoles about a week away. Cancelled my gym membership too after 2M. Just run slow I guess! ... And keep doing the deep Heat-Ice-Deep heat!7 -

You've gotta get better, at least for the creampuffs and beer 😁4 -

@polskagirl01 haha! Peak Wisconsin!
I think I will have the beer and see if I can box the creampuff. Together just sounds wrong! Lol4 -
You're doing great @kgirlhart . I agree. I don't think anyone can get used to 100 + temps.
Thanks @chris_in_cal !
@polskagirl01 It's amazing how fast plants grow. I hope they survive while you are gone.
I hope the new insoles help @tarun_yadavA ! You are doing great at keeping up the rehab when I know you want to run all out. I agree, not sure that cream puffs and beer goes together, but who knows?

I went on an outdoor run today. It felt hard, but much easier than yesterday and my previous 5 or so fun- which was awesome. I finally full-heartedly let myself run at a slightly slower pace. Also, it wasn’t so hot yet, as it rained overnight. To cool off on my run I intentionally ran close to the long-still-slightly-wet grass, and bushes hoping not to pick up any ticks. I also contemplated putting my head/or shirt in the ice cold river for the first time. Maybe a future strategy? Next time I won’t forget to bring water .
I ran 10.2km bringing my June total to 72.6/150km.6 -
@quilteryoyo - called the 'Creampuff 5K'. Apparently it's a Wisco state fair staple. And all participants get one!
Will probably drink the beer and box the creampuff and eat in my hotel room at the end of the night4 -
This is my first post in the group. I ran 3 miles today, it was tough and my legs felt like bricks at the end. I've been working out steadily, now I just need to up my running game. I'm going to be doing a 31 days of running 3 miles in July.9

Welcome @ashtonleigh12 I started here about three months ago. This thread has a bunch of tough birds that run and post. It's really motivated me so far. I've started to feel accountable to posting my goals and trying to keep them. Good luck starting, I hope to see you back soon.

Wasn't supposed to do anything extra today... packing and cleaning [including kids' rooms, WITH kid present and helping😳] was already too much...
But then the other kid was upset becausehe lost his original Nokia 3310 somewhere between home and school, so I did some walking and searching with him. He made a missing poster and put it on a telephone pole near where he thinks it dropped out of his pocket and it's sad. The phone is gone. So now I'll have to go get a new SIM card tomorrow and cancel the other one. The message we get when we call the phone suggests it's already been removed. I even sent a text message to it saying it's a child's phone and is so old it only has sentimental value and please let us know where to come get it. Whoever found it won't even be able to charge it without the special charger from 2 decades ago...yeah, so I walked all around and am now completely wiped out and hoping I don't crash again tomorrow. I don't have enough days left for this before our trip.8 -

Did a treadmill session this afternoon. I didn't want to push it too hard, but I felt pretty good once I got going. I did the quarter mile intervals again..walk/run at 3.8/5.0-5.5 mph. Total was 3.50 miles for an avg pace of 13:55 min/mile. Avg HR was 122 with a max of 153 bpm. The running totaled 1.50 miles in 17:08 min for an 11:25 min/mile (5.25 mph) pace. I'm happy with that today.4 -
@Laurz9191 Glad your run was better and fun today. Yes, do try to remember to take water. You don't want to get dehydrated.
@tarun_yadavA I like a good creampuff. Wisconsin State Fair sounds like an awesome running venue. Have you ran that one before?
Welcome @ashtonleigh12 . Those runs where your legs are like bricks are hard, but you did it! That's awesome!
Hugs @polskagirl01 ! So sorry about the phone. Adding anything to your day when it was already full is hard. Hears to hoping you don't crash in the morning and get everything done you need to do before your trip.
2 -
Sorry for your kid's lost phone @polskagirl01 😞 Being that old I can't imagine anyone else getting any use of it. Hope y'all find it just for sentimental reasons!
@ashtonleigh12 welcome! Not sure about doing 31 days of 3 miles if you are just starting out. Take it slow and steady.
Did 6 TM miles after work.

Hey all. I've just been reading a few pages trying to catch up. I hope the heat is letting up a little for some of you. But, it's summer so here we go I guess.
I have been plugging along with walking here. I am not keeping a log but Stella is a constant reminder to me to go for a walk each day. Monday I was off for the Juneteenth holiday, so I took her for a nice walk. Then a friend of mine wanted to meet me for a walk so I took Stella again. I didn't record mileage but it was probably close to 6 miles total. She was wiped out for the day!
Last night I had the Workforce Run 5k (formerly corporate challenge), which I had intended to be my "comeback" race or at least motivation to be back to running. The moved up surgery interfered with that plan but I went anyway and walked it with two of my co-workers. Our university team won as the largest team of 173 people signed up, so that was kind of fun. We also had the 3rd place overall male with a 16:02 time. Not that it really matters, but fun to cheer for your team - it's an out and back those of us walking had a good chance to cheer the runners as they came back (and we were barely getting started It was pretty hot so running would have been tough, like last year, but they had a fire hose spray at the end which was nice. The race was held last year but was smaller post-COVID than it had been in the past, but this year seemed quite a bit closer to it's pre-COVID feel. I enjoyed it but I really felt like it was taking forever to walk it and just wanted to run to get finished but followed doctor's orders and kept it to a walk. My average speed was 3.2 mph, so I'd have to pick up the pace to keep up with @quilteryoyo. If I wasn't walking with others I would have tried walk a little faster.
I got another walk in with Stella today - about 2 miles. This weekend looks pretty rainy but I'm hoping to maybe get in a hike somewhere that's not a mountain but is a little more of an adventure.7 -

It didn't get as hot this afternoon as it did yesterday, but it was 82°F feels like 93° this morning at 5:30, so it was even hotter this morning than yesterday morning. I ran 6 miles again. It was a mostly uneventful run. I did see a lady that I know hand watering her front yard. I asked if I could run through and she said sure. That really helped. It is supposed to be 76° in the morning, so hopefully it will feel a little nicer than the last couple of days.
