Hi All - Haven't been feeling the greatest but have been reading and following along, living and running vicariously through you all!
@Teresa502 - gorgeous views from your hike! I don't think I have ever see chestnuts in their 'pods' like that. I thought they grew just hanging from the tree. 🤷🏻♀️
@chris_in_cal - hope you are feeling a little better before your 10k! The weather should be cool and perfect for it!
@martaindale - you might check out GypsyRunner for running skirts. They typically have some cute ones and even with fun themed prints. Although now that I look they only have skirt 'covers' now so you have to put your own running shorts under them. They have cute patterns on their running shorts too though.
Hoping some of our cooler (still in the high 70's low 80's here) make it down to Texas. We are finally cooling off into the 50's overnight too!
While it seems to be taking a lot out of me I have gotten a couple of walks in just a bit over 2mi the last couple of days. I just come home and rest pretty much the rest of the day. I am supposed to meet my SIL for a walk on Wed and if I can get a couple more walks in I will actually make my 25 mile goal for the month - the most since May.6 -
8 miles this morning. Another day, another tree...went the other way today, and as I turned the corner, and entire tree had fallen across the sidewalk. Luckily there was a street light on the corner so it was light enough to see it before I crashed into it. It is a bad year for trees here in Texas!

Morning all!
Been a busy one work-wise since finishing my morning run.
Got in 4.76 (09"19).
@shanaber I see you on Strava! Well done for getting those 2Mile walks in! 💪
@quilteryoyo thank you! Don't fly out till Wed 11th. So intend on running everyday till then. (Just the 1 off-day!)
Going for a conference /networking event. Then working out of the India office for a week (for the project I'm on).
Then it's October half term break for schools here. So last year we did South Africa. This year, my wife was all, "if you're already out there... why don't we...?".
So... conference (solo), work (solo), then 8 days family time.
Been a headache so far to find things that keep all parties happy/entertained !6 -
@Teresa502 the hike sounds and looks lovely.
@chris_in_cal I hope your remaining symptoms get lost before your race.
I'm hanging in there, managed to make some pico de gallo and a pot of chili today, very yummy. Maybe that will open the sinuses etc. I'm now in energy-saving mode, laying in the hammock with some ginger fruit tea, watching birds.5 -

So close to goal! I ran 5 miles this morning with my fast friend. Temp was a nice 55F. Thanks everyone for letting me share my hiking adventures here and all the kind comments. I really love being out in the woods and although it’s challenging, it’s also a good feeling at the end of the day to look back over the terrain you have covered and everything that you have seen along the way.
@shanaber I’m sorry you have been having some rough days. You hang in there!
@martaindle – Skirt Sports has some great running skirts with built in shorts with pockets. I have several of theirs.
Glad you were able to dodge the tree today @Scott6255.
4 -
@teresa502 You covered a lot of ground! I also have never seen chestnuts in their raw form. Interesting. I don’t know they grew in pods like that.
I will check out skirt sports. I definitely prefer a 1 piece skort over a skirt I would add to shorts. At that point, I would just wear the shorts.
@chris_in_cal I hope you continue to feel better heading into the weekend but it’s good to adjust your plan now in case you aren’t at your best.
@shanaber I would take those temps in a heartbeat!3 -

Slightly cooler at 71F but the humidity was nuts and since I was out before sunrise, it was very foggy. I like the look of an early morning fog. The streetlights make little beams through the fog and everything looks a little mysterious.
Because I was running in the true dark, I wore my noxgear vest and still almost got hit by a car. I was watching him. I wouldn’t have actually gotten hit but someone who wasn’t closely watching would have. He rolled through a stop sign while watching the cross traffic but not bothering to look 3 feet up to where pedestrians would be. Like I said, light up reflective vest. I was in the intersection already so I stopped just shy of his car and yelled HEY while throwing my arms up. Then he saw me and jumped . He was very apologetic and hopefully the scare that he could have hit someone will make him observe stop signs and actually look for pedestrians. This was a major street right by the elementary school. Foot traffic to the school would have started in another 15 mins or so. And this neighborhood has gotten a lot more active over the past year. I routinely see 5-6 people during my predawn runs where I used to maybe see 1. Seriously dude, look up!
Overall, it was a good run. I mixed in a few strides towards the end in preparation for speed work tomorrow, the first tempo run of this training program. Haven’t run fast in months so I expect it will go poorly and be a bit of a shock to my system but it should get better in a week or 2 as my legs remember how to go fast.8 -

I set the Garmin Coach for a 21 week 10K training plan with a goal time of finishing it in 1:15:00
(It is a really hilly course.) I started out bright green tending toward purple. Here is the latest:

@chris_in_cal Don’t let Garmin get you down (that’s been my motto quite often this year).
@Teresa502 You hike sounds like it was really fun! I love hearing about cool hikes as much as I love hearing about running . Your pictures were beautiful! It didn’t sound like you got much sleep though . In Germany there are tons of chestnut trees! I had to open a bunch of them on our last weekend outing (very pokey btw) because the kids like collecting them. We have a place nearby that has a bunch of deer, like a deer farm, and we’ll go at some point and feed them the chestnuts. The deer love them.
Today, it was quite hot again and I had to run in the early afternoon because of work. I ran 10.1 km. It felt good except for the heat. 172.7/160km for September.

@martaindale rant on. I have learned to never trust a car even tho I try to lite up like an emerg vehicle. LOL. Just too much distracted driving. You might actually have been in a blind spot of the car where the windshield and front window come together. I have had that happen to me with pedestrians who were very close but hidden by that part of the car. However FULL STOP at friggin signs is really a better answer too.
Hit my 100 for the month and had a fairly nice run today. First time starting out and not feeling like I was about to die in a long while. (that's a whine for another time or never) Up to Strength training # 16 today if I don't wimp out. I think I am liking it. That with the foam roller seems to be helping with injury stuff.
@chris_in_cal what the heck does COACH AMY know anyway. You are going to rock your race!!!!

@tarun_yadavA Your trip sounds cool running or no! It’s nice that your family can join you part of the time. Maybe crazy laps in the hotel???1

I didn't post yesterday, but I did run. It was a 2.5 miles run at 77°F with a dew point of 72°. I saw a skunk and the cross country kids at the park, but otherwise it was uneventful. Today's run was much more pleasant at 66°F with a dew point of 58°. I ran 6.5 miles. This run was also uneventful, but the weather was much more pleasant.
@Scott6255 Sorry about your shins. We've had a lot of downed branches here too. They are hard to see in the dark.
@Teresa502 I love the hike reports. The photos are lovely. I don't think I could go up in that tower, but the view is gorgeous.

Nah. I could see him, he just wasn't looking at me. Our sidewalks are set back from the street far enough so that blind spot isn't really the issue. He was just zoned in on the cross traffic and didn't consider there might be anyone else but a car for him to worry about.
I'm not reckless. I knew he hadn't seen me. I could have waited off to the side and he would have driven off and never known how close he got. I intended to scare him. The next person he doesn't see might be a kid on a bike. My hope is that now he will stop and look.6 -

Y'all are more dedicated than I! That's a break from running for me 100%. I think I can safely say I will never do crazy laps in a hotel! 😄6 -

@scott6255 - So sorry about your shins but also sorry about the trees. It is tough on them during a drought!
@martaindale - I don't think I would ever pay for a skirt to wear over my own shorts either. The only reason would be if I wanted something for a running 'costume' for a holiday run or the like and it was a cheaper route.
I will not step into the crosswalk here if a car is approaching until they stop completely and I have made eye contact. I had too many experiences like yours and ours is also a school crossing area. So many people have been hit and at least one cyclist was killed, that they installed huge stop signs with blinking lights. I wish they had just installed a pedestrian/cyclist light that isn't activated unless you push the button, otherwise it is a normal 4-way stop.
@tarun_yadavA - where in India are you going - Bangalore, Mumbai, elsewhere? When I was working I had coworkers in both of those and the ones in Bangalore would agree there is nowhere outside to exercise but Mumbai has some beautiful areas and trails. We used to plan family vacations around conference travel and work meetings/training. Planning wasn't too much of an issue though because my husband and I often attended the same conferences and our daughter came along for the fun.
I have never run laps in a hotel but I have done many treadmill runs in terrible hotel excuses for gyms.
@chris_in_cal - what 10k are you running that is hilly? I know you aren't running half marathons yet but have you considered the San Diego Holiday Half in December? It is a fun, fast, mostly downhill race from Rancho Bernardo to Torrey Pines State Beach. I loved that race when I was racing and ran it the 1st 5 years it ran.

@chris_in_cal - what 10k are you running that is hilly?... have you considered the San Diego Holiday Half in December?
I was ambitious and already signed up for this April 14th San Diego Beach and Bay Half: https://sandiegobeachandbayhalfmarathon.com/
This one is perfectly flat, and it is the place I do most of my long runs anyway...I'll have home field advantage.
In 2024 we should both do the SD Holiday Half, I'm in.6 -
Morning all
Got in 5.15M (09"13).
@Laurz9191 @martaindale @shanaber
No, no crazy laps I'm afraid. It'll probably be hotel gyms where possible. (Hello again Elliptical !!).
Most of the 4* and above hotels (especially Western ones eg Marriott) have gated entry, with long driveways with several security checkpoints. You would have to leave the property to even try. And then you're at the risk of traffic, potholes, stray animals and quite simply breathing in some of the most polluted air on Planet Earth! Lol.
From memory/what I know... you have to specially go out and find a park or green space to run.
@shanaber experience? - have you ever been to India? Or from your offshore co-workers? But it sounds accurate. No Bangalore or Mumbai for me.
Conference is at a hill resort about a 3 hour drive from New Delhi. And then the week of working is all New Delhi/Gurgaon.
Wife+kids fly in a week later. Still deciding on what to do!
Wife wants to do Taj Mahal (but getting outvoted.... it's literally for an Instagram pic, I'm accusing her of! ); teenager wants to go watch a cricket game in far flung corners of the country (I'm open... but wife is having none of it!).
I like my 9 year old best at the minute... as long as he's not sat in the same place for too long; has access to YouTube on a phone or his Nintendo Switch; supplied with Coke chips and ice-cream.... he's happy! 😊
Be him, I'm telling the other two! Lol.

Hey, I've only been here 12Months.... but has anyone from here ever met up in person for a Run.... ??? That'd be so cool.
@chris_in_cal @shanaber my brother lives in Pleasanton.
Always moaning that no one comes to see him; nobody loves him... whiny Middle child that he is lol
Could wangle a trip to go check in on him and go down to S.Cal for a Run!

@Teresa502 - Ur hiking photos are beautiful.
@chris_in_cal - The Garmin lady is being very cruel! I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry at that prediction
@tarun_yadavA - Members have met up, but a number of years ago a few members met up in Hawaii, @Shanaber would remember the details better.

First tempo run of this training cycle. It wasn’t a raging success but also not a total bomb. I am using a plan out of Hanson’s HM book. There isn’t a perfect fit in terms of pacing using the charts in the book. My current PR is 2:05 and some change. The chart has 2:10 and 2:02. I know, I know, I can do some math and figure out pace targets for 2:03/2:04 but I’m kinda lazy and just want a plug and play plan. So, I am using the 2:02 paces, or at least I’m going to try to. Taking 3-4 minutes off my HM is a lot at this point and idk how much more I can realistically shave off but I would love to get under 2 hours. I dropped a little over 2 minutes last year just riding the coattails of marathon training, so maybe 3 mins is doable with targeted training. I figure I will know within the first month or so if I need to adjust the pace. The workouts should be hard, but doable.
Anywho, this morning was a 3 mi tempo run (for Hanson that is race pace - 9:18). I did the mile warmup then got going. I could tell I was going too slow early in the first mile. I upped the speed a little but the first mile still clocked in 32 secs slow. Turned it up a bit more and the 2nd mile was closer, 13 secs slow. By the end of the 2nd mile, I was pretty sure I was where I needed to be, so I tried to hold it steady and the last one came in spot on. That pace feels fast after 7 months of easy running and the warm humid conditions probably didn’t help. It was hard but I got there. Right now it’s hard to imaging holding that pace for 13 miles, but that’s how it always is at the beginning of a training plan. I’ll ride it out for a few weeks and see how it goes before considering any adjustments.5 -

Made it to goal! Ran with my fast friend again this morning and although I was feeling slow and tired the pace was actually a little faster than yesterday’s run. There were less hills on this route so maybe that explains it. Temp was 59F.
@martaindale – I bet the driver of that car will be more vigilant in the future. I think I’m more observant since I began running. Especially when turning right on red. The tendency is to look left to make sure nothing is coming and not to the right where a pedestrian could be crossing the street.
Congratulations on making your monthly goal @SummerSkier and @Kgirlhart!
@chris_in_cal – You go run that race the best you can and show Coach Amy what you’re made of!
@Tarun_yadavA - @quilteryoyo and I met up for a race a couple of years ago and when she was running her first half marathon (virtual), I joined her for the last few miles. In 2018, I ran with another MFP runner when he was visiting my area but he’s no longer on the forum. Does anyone remember workaholic_nurse?

@Teresa502 that's cool about you and @quilteryoyo !!
@eleanorhawkins ... you're back in England next year right???5 -
You are doing great @shanaber !
@Scott6255 Glad you saw the tree before you ran into it! That would not have been good.
@tarun_yadavA Great running and good luck finding things for everyone to do in India. I look forward to having about your trip.
Hope you are feeling better soon @polskagirl01 .
Great running @martaindale and glad you missed the car and scared the guy. Hopefully he'll pay closer attention from now on.
Ooops @chris_in_cal . 🤣. I think you are doing great.
You are doing great @SummerSkier !
@tarun_yadavA @Teresa502 and I have met for a race. She lives relatively close and when I ran my virtual half marathon she put up signs of encouragement along my route and ran the last few miles with me. I don't know if I would have made it without her. 😊. I see that @Teresa502 already told you that.
Sounds like you did great @martaindale !
@Teresa502 I do remember him. Wonder what happened to him?

After giving up during my summer vacation (too hilly, and I wanted to enjoy the trip and not sleep poorly after running in the evening) I started again on Sunday. Obviously, stamina is gone again. Today seemed nice, but I was running too fast for what's possible at the moment. Oh, I might not reach my goal for this month7
