We got some rain last night, but it wasn't raining or storming this morning, so I ran 6 miles. It felt warm, at 72°F, and it was humid and kind of windy, so it wasn't the most pleasant weather. But it was a nice enough run. I may take tomorrow as a rest day even if it isn't raining. But I'll check the weather for Thursday and Friday before I decide.
I love your Halloween decorations @shanaber. I'm glad you are getting out when you can.
Great run @quilteryoyo! That sky is so pretty.
@AlphaHowls I'm glad you at least got one waffle. I hate it when races are not well organized.
Way to go @yirara! You should be proud.

I’ve his my monthly target this evening. It’s mostly down to some decent calm weather I think. I joined a Strava goal to hit 100km in October which is 62 miles so going to aim for that now.

65.45/90 mile goal
I helped do blood pressures at another local school this morning. Afterwards, I went into daycare, thinking they needed me to help cover the teachers lunches, but they had it covered. So, all of a sudden I had the afternoon off and had to decide what to do with my time.
It was so nice out - sunny, high 75F (23.9C), low humidity, I didn't want to stay inside, which is where most of my to-do list lives. So, the first thing I did was my run. I knew if I did anything else before, I would be less likely to do as much. I did a recovery run, trying to keep my HR under 130, but conceded to keep it under 140 once I got going. I was actually pretty pleased as I ran 2.50 miles in 34:37 min for a 13:51 min/mile avg pace. My avg HR was 129 with a max of 137 bpm. I also walked a mile total for warm up and cool down. It was 68F (20C) with 24% humidity.
After I rested about 30 min, I went out and sawed some trees/brush from behind my shop and hauled them to the brush pile. I was actively sawing/hauling for 1h9m51s and traversed 0.86 miles. My avg HR was 96 with a max of 110 bpm. I can feel that in my arms tonight...strength training?
I put my mileage on the Run The Year site and reached 900 miles! That is running, fast walking, tennis, mowing, and sawing wood....not all steps taken. I'm very happy to reach that number already.9 -
@chris_in_cal You are doing great, but I predict you aren't going to make your goal this month. And, that's okay. We all know that you have a lot going on. Have you been picked for a jury yet?
You are doing great @Mari33a . Congrats on meeting your monthly goal already! You can make that stretch goal, I'm sure!
You have so many miles @SummerSkier ! I'm sure that your body appreciated the rest day yesterday.
@AlphaHowls I'm glad you finally got A waffle. It is sad that they were so disorganized this year. Sounds like you are recovering well. Take it easy on that hip and your legs.
Congratulations @yirara ! That is huge and you should be proud. Hills are hard!
Thanks @kgirlhart ! Great running.
You are doing great @mnsmov15 !
3 -
Intentionally did 2.15 miles run/walk to round to
29/62 miles for October so far. Almost halfway there!
5 -
Happy you got your well deserved waffle @AlphaHowls 😋
@Mari33a awesome job running! Great that you met goal already.
Good to hear from you @chris_in_cal.
Did a 6TM recovery run after work today.
7 -
@AlphaHowls - so happy you at Last eventually got a waffle. It is disappointing that the support just wasn't there this year. I am sure the organizers will hear about it. Runners aren't generally known for keeping silent about things like that. I suspect once your legs are feeling better in a few days you will be right back to your distance again.
@Mari33a - Can you find Noxgear in Ireland? My daughter their harness lights for her pup and loved them. Great job hitting your monthly goal early with plenty of time for that stretch goal!
@quilteryoyo - Fantastic getting your run in and then doing all that additional work! I can believe you hit 900 miles already with all the things you do!
@yirara - being able to run a hill, especially a steep one is a great accomplishment worth celebrating!!
@mnsmov15 - you are doing great and being so consistent in your running. Looks like you will hit your step goal for the month too.
The beach was muddy last night but when Hobbes and I went out to walk today I was delighted to discover the beach was mostly packed sand (and some avoidable) muddy spots. We took a lovely walk as far as we could go in one direction before the water blocked us at the cliffs. Then we came back around and walked back and past the hotel. There was a group doing some kind of water rescue training (FD I believe) and they looked like they were having a great time. We stopped and watched them for a while. Hobbes met so many people who loved up on him as well as playful pups. All in all 2.7 miles and one exhausted pup!
Then we drove to find a grocery store and went to check out the butterfly grove. We will go back to the grove in the morning which we have been told is the best time to see them. We saw quite a few this afternoon but they were not where we could take any pictures of them.
I posted pictures from my walk on Strava but here are a couple and also from the butterfly grove
Is anyone considering doing run the year and setting up a team for next year? I am already thinking about what I am going to be able to do next year. I won't be able to run initially, it is going to take time to get back to it and there is no way I can hit 2024 miles but I am considering signing up again and would love to be part of a team.7 -

At 48F this morning it was almost 10 degrees warmer than Monday’s run at the same time. We’re having lovely Fall weather here. It was 74F when I left work yesterday and the forecast looks great for the next few days which prompted my hiking buddy to decide we needed to finish the portion of the AT that runs through the Smoky Mountains this weekend. That will cut down on my running time for the month but with 11 miles to goal, I should be able to reach it.
Love the pictures from Pismo Beach @shanaber and you look fabulous!

Great run @daria0919 !
@Scott6255 Looks like you are recovering well. Great 6 miles on the TM.
Thanks @shanaber . You do look great and I'm glad you are enjoying your time in Pismo! I would love to join a run the year team again. I just have no idea of how to set it up.
Great running @Teresa502 . Enjoy your hike this weekend. I think this may be our last stretch of great fall weather. It's hard to believe the high temps next week are going to be in the 40s and 50s.

So basically I ran, and my legs first said: yeah you can run fast. Don't slow down. And then blood pooling started. Basically I forgot I had food poisoning and spend quite some time on the loo today. Not surprised I could not run. No problem. I'll be better again tomorrow.6 -

Another failed speed workout in the books. It was 72F, 97% humidity at sunrise today. Almost summer temps, which is ridiculous. Today’s workout was 4 miles at race pace with 1 mile WU/CD. I knew going into this run that it wasn’t possible for me to hold that pace for 4 miles in these conditions. I did this same workout pretty easily when it was in the 50’s so I know I can do it when conditions are right but 70’s and humid isn’t that. I felt like I should try to get there for a bit since part of the point of these workouts is training your muscle memory for what race pace feels like. I managed to get down to target pace in the first mile but was already slowing a bit by the end. I tried to hold on for a 2nd mile since sometimes that 2nd one is better than the first, but it was a little slower and my HR was now well into the 180’s. So, I started slowing down but my HR didn’t move so I slowed some more and finally managed to get it into the upper 170’s with a pace closer to 11-11:30/mile. I probably should have just done this on the treadmill but I HATE running faster paces on the treadmill. The same pace outside vs on the treadmill feels so much easier outside. But, once again, Garmin says I was productive! Garmin loves it when I push myself to the limit.6 -

I'm photophobic so this probably the best picture of me
The day before thanksgiving at the Pismo Beach Pier going for a swim. It's a lovely place.

Hi everyone! Brrrr. it was cold here this morning. I am going to have to find my running gloves soon! I just couldn’t motivate myself to run in the rain on my lunch break yesterday, so I didn’t get out . I am hoping to get used to the changing temps soon. I do really love all the colors. It’s hard to capture how pretty they are in pictures, but you’ll find my attempt in the spoiler. I ran 10km today bringing my monthly total to 131.8/160km.7

It felt very cold this evening & took me a little while to warm up but I still enjoyed it. I love the calmness of running in the dark. When I got back home the heat make my nose tingle & gave me a pressure headache
@chris_in_cal - Love the photo. Great colours.
@Laurz9191-Thats a lovely place to run!
@martaindale - Sorry ur runs aren’t going as u want. U know what ur doing so u will get there.6 -

@shanaber I would be interested in this kind of challenge, although I have no idea how to go about it!! It sure would help with consistency and would be great to do it together!
Perhaps we can set up to run/walk - towards the mile goal?
Thank you for all your encouragement @shanaber @quilteryoyo!4 -

Happy you got your well deserved waffle @AlphaHowls 😋
@Mari33a awesome job running! Great that you met goal already.
Good to hear from you @chris_in_cal.
Did a 6TM recovery run after work today.
Cool ticker! I've got to try something like this to "SEE" my progress0 -
Trying to understand what “run the year” means. Explanation for us newbies to this group is welcomed.
Have the members of this group ever tried to get together in a city for a racing event? Some cities have multiple races in one day, like an 8K, 1/2 marathon and marathon all in the same morning with staggered start times. That way we can each pick what works for us at our level. Maybe an east coast city/date and a west coast city/date? Maybe a set up in other countries depending on where everyone’s from.
Thought it might be fun for some of us to meet each other and do an event together.
Thoughts……3 -
@daria0919 "Run the Year" is just a challenge to run the number of miles in the current year (i.e. 2023).
Some do it as a team, others try to do it individually. Some include walking or other types of steps.
There is a website that you can sign up on that syncs with Garmin or Strava or whatever and keeps track of your progress. There is a fee for that website RunTheYear I am currently doing it individually, just running miles. But didn't sign up on the website, just tracking on my own. I don't need a t-shirt or a medal.
@martaindale I hear you about this stupid weather! It is either hellish hot, or humid, or raining. It didn't rain for 3 months here, but this week it has been raining almost non-stop since I got back from Atlanta Monday afternoon. Hence another 6 TM miles today.
6 -
This is the Run the Year Challenge.
You sign up for the challenge and add in your running, walking, whatever exercise miles over the year to try to hit the year in miles, so 2024 miles or whatever you set your goal to be for the year. In the past we have done teams where your miles accumulate together to hit the yearly total.
We have also done a Run the World challenge that we organized more or less by where we all live. I don't recall when that one kicks off though.
@daria0919 - a few of the members have gotten together IRL but it has proven difficult to plan/schedule. There was a meetup in Hawaii for a relay race up a volcano on the Big Island and I know @Teresa502 met @quilteryoyo at a race @quilteryoyo was running.
@chris_in_cal - love that sunset picture! I tried to take one last night when we were at dinner but it did not turn out nearly as brilliant as yours because the marine layer was coming in.
It was in the low 50's this morning cloudy and drizzling so we held off going for a walk or to go to the butterfly grove. When we did get to the grove there were even less butterflies than yesterday because it was too cold and overcast and they tend to huddle up in the trees. When we got back I took Hobbes for another beach walk, not planning to go far. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves and the tide was way out. Ended up going nearly 4 miles and even tried running a little, hitting a 12 min pace. I couldn't maintain it for long but it felt good to have the energy to try.
Not sure if anyone wants to see more beach/ocean pictures but they are under the split because... why not 😊
I have never seen so many sand dollars on a CA beach. This one looked like it was scooting along to get back to the water!7 -
@shanaber thanks for sharing the beautiful beach photos! Love it he dramatic skies, the pup and the sand dollar.
Thanks for sharing the Run the Year info and site. Looks like something I’m going to give a try.
@Scott6255 thanks for the Run the Year info and site as well.2 -
Other questions : what is Strava? An app, I think? Is it free?
I have my Garmin. Who’s using Garmin? And who’s using Strava? I’m not in the loop on all the running technology- I have basically just used the Garmin connect app in the past.2 -
@daria0919 - Strava is an app/website (strava.com) that is also social kind of like MFP. There is a free version or you can pay for the additional features. I use the free version and it works fine for me and I don't really know any longer what the paid version offers.
You can have your runs/walks/workouts synched from whatever running app or device you are using like Garmin or FitBit or you can use Strava directly to record what you are doing. I don't have a Garmin and I am not real fond of the Apple workout app so I use Strava on my Apple Watch to record my runs/walks/workouts.3 -
@shanaber great pics! I'm encouraged to see you maybe being able to ease back into running next year. Cheering you on (in all of it, not just the running part)!6
-
Hello everyone. Just checking in.
Been a week of carnage for me. Did get a welcome workout at the gym in yesterday, but as expected - running a no go.
Catching up on posts...
@shanaber - lovely pics
@AlphaHowls - great running streak, still, even if HM streak broken 🙌.
@daria0919 - 1. Strava is free. And most of us are on it. 2. Meetups... Lol... I asked this question last month maybe. Out of us active users, just @Teresa502 and @quilteryoyo have met up in TN.
I'll see if I can make something work when @eleanorhawkins visits England next year. Stateside... @chris_in_cal and @shanaber might be easiest for me, as my brother lives in California!
Anyways... Trip is going great (lack of exercise and eating badly notwithstanding!).
Done Haridwar and Amritsar.
Former- checked out a temple on a hill, and Hindu pilgrims doing prayer by the River Ganges at night;
Latter, in Amritsar- saw: an outdoor festival where they celebrate a festival called Dussehra (where Lord Ram killed an evil demon) by burning these huge effigies with rockets, then the Golden Temple at night (spectacular), visited a museum all about 1947 Partition, and saw the India-Pakistan border where they do a gate closing ceremony. Which was fun.
Tigers next!
Oh and food... Burger King done too. American fast food chains in India is really interesting from a Geographic perspective. Adaptability of Western chains to local tastes. So India has a lot of vegetarians so about half the menu is vegetarian! Then here's where it gets quirky... Hindus that do eat meat won't touch beef. The cow is considered sacred, so no Beef products here. In addition - around 20% of the population here is Muslim. And Muslims don't eat Pork (opposite- pig is considered dirty or unclean). So out of deference to both faiths... There is no beef or pork on the menus here. So while it's easy enough for a KFC... Burger king is... Weird!
Everything is either vegetarian or chicken. If you're a regular American who lands up in India, and you're a big fan of the XL Big King with Bacon... Ummm don't get too excited when you see the BK sign lol.
(I think other than the Chicken Royale - everything else was either 'Fiery' or 'Tandoori ' or 'Peri Peri'... lots of chilli / chilli Mayos in everything!)McDonalds to do... (The International airport in Delhi has one, so will eat that on the way out next week!)6 -
Oh no @yirara ! I do hope you are feeling better today!
You did great @martaindale . Hahaha I guess Garmin just likes pain.
Nice running @Laurz9191 . Lovely pictures!
Nice running @Mari33a .
You are doing great @mnsmov15 !
I'm so glad to see that you had the energy for a run too @shanaber. Love your beach pictures. Too bad about the monarchs.
Love your travels @tarun_yadavA . I am curious if the vegetarian Whopper at Burger King is made to taste like beef or something else.

I have my Garmin. Who’s using Garmin?
Probably most here use Garmin, it is the oldest 'runners' watch. Fitbit and Apple are very common too. Good smaller players are Suunto and Polar.
This is all the actual watch 'hardware' end of things. MFP, Strava, Training Peaks, and all of these companies' various apps are the software/analysis/social end of things.
Some advice I've heard, that makes a lot of sense is that "All the hardware is basically very similar, go where most of your friends are, because that will keep you going."4
