OCTOBER 2023 Monthly Running Challenge

10 miles this afternoon. Found a window where it wasn't raining. After 6 hours of cleaning up after the foundation guys left a complete muddy, dusty mess all over the house, I was pretty tired. Probably got about half of it done, but I was ready for a break. It was relatively cool so it wasn't too bad of a run.

The forecast called for rain all weekend, so I wasn't sure if I would be able to do my long run this week. I woke up this morning around 5 and it was pouring rain, so I went back to sleep and when I got up later it wasn't raining. The forecast still called for rain all day tomorrow so I decided that if I was going to get a run in this weekend I had better get out and get it done. It was 52° and a little misty at times, but not raining. I wore shorts and a t-shirt and started out with my sleeves and gloves. I took them off after awhile put them in my pockets. I ran 10 miles. It was a nice run. But when I got home I realized that I had lost one of my sleeves. I got in my car and drove the route I ran but I didn't see it. I do have another pair, but this pair was my favorite.

Morning everyone!
Got in an unplanned 4 1/2Miles (09"43).
Felt so so sluggish.
Time to get back into a routine!
This, will almost certainly be it for the month... 86.1M ( /70 goal)8 -
Hello everyone!
I got in a faster run today. It feels nice to be getting faster again after slowing down during the summer. I just hope that the trend continues. I got 8.1km in, bringing me over my goal. 165.2/160km for October.
7 -
2 miles this morning.
37.16/62 for October. Plan is to get to 40 on October 31st6 -
Oh no! @kgirlhart Im sorry your sleeve went missing. I did the same thing with one of my favorite blinkers a few weeks ago. I went back and drove the route. No luck. Dang thing was on the back of my jacket when I checked the next day!
@tarun_yadavA Well done on exceeding your goal for the month even with this long vacation in the middle. You are going to rock November I can tell.
@Scott6255 that sounds horrendous that those guys did not clean up after themselves. grrr. But super nice 10 miler between showers. I managed my run today BEFORE the weather socked in too badly.
I am up to 183 today after a slow but steady run - out of 100 mile goal. I won't make 200 but maybe I will make 190 if I can find a window in the next 2 days to do a few. Tomorrow is supposed to be the perfect ugly trifecta of Monday, cold, rainy, windy and dark (ok I can't count) so I may wait until after work if it stops raining to put in a 5K and then run at lunch on Tuesday since I will be remote in the afternoon. Depends how motivated I am. Had to check my furnace was ready to go this afternoon as they are forecasting to get into the 30's this week. Maybe it's overstated but I don't like to just hope it's going to come on...
I did see a rainbow this morning which is really REALLY rare for me in Tx. Normally I see them with afternoon storms but there it was at mile 4 so I ran toward it for a while. Of course then it started to rain on my but it wasn't anything like the other day where I was completely soaked. Just a light drizzle and some lighter rain.
7 -
I'm in for La Jolla at least for now. We'll see what they say in January for my prognosis and how we will proceed after all the treatments are done. I am hoping to be able to get back to running at least a little in February. I may not be able to run the HM but I would hope to at least do a walk/run Orr even walk most of it if necessary. If I am not up for that I will do the 5k. Gives me something to look forward too.
@kgirlhart - I am so sorry about your sleeve. I actually reran my entire route once when I lost one of my favorite gloves. I also didn't find it. Makes you wonder where they go!
@tarun_yadavA - loved your pictures! It would be so awesome to see the tigers in their natural habitat.
When I was in college I worked in a zoo and hand raised a tiger cub. Learned the hard way how strong their jaws are even when they are young.Taj the cubI know you will get right back into your routine once you get back home!
Taj the full grown adult
I missed my 25mile goal by 2.38miles. I had planned to get out this morning but we had high wind warnings and it was brutal out. Not worth trying to fight the wind and then it was not only windy but hot and dry. The winds died down a little but are back now (over 30mph sustained right now!) and it is supposed to remain hot and windy for the next few days.
I won't be able to get out the next 2 days anyway or next week at all really. Have infusion on Monday and it really knocks me out.
8 -
@SummerSkier thank you!
@shanaber oh wow! That is amazing! Where was this zoo? And how long did you spend with that Tiger? So many questions!
Hope infusion goes well and it's not too bad for you4 -
Got in 3.5 yesterday! 11.7/20 of my goal so far!! I’m trying to go back to read some of your posts…8

6.2 miles today. Too cold to run this morning (30 something), so waited until after work. It was better, but 48F and 20mph sustained wind made it feel like 42, so was still cold for me. Gloves, long sleeve tech shirt, shorts was about the right gear. Felt pretty good.

I ran after work today. The cold front blew in, so even in the afternoon it was mid 40s, cloudy with a tiny bit of drizzle. I wasn't feeling intervals so I switched runs and did my tempo run instead. Did a better job locking in on the pace today. All 4 splits were within 7 secs of target with less bouncing around. I felt strong and it's getting easier as the program goes on.7 -

@tarun_yadavA - That was at the Oakland Zoo. I was her primary caretaker from the time she was brought to the zoo as a tiny cub. In the cub picture I think she was about 3-4 months old. She had to be fed round the clock like a baby so I even had her at home in our apartment. I continued to care for her until she was around two but it was no longer one on one. when she was around 1 she tried to play with me like she would another tiger and bit down on my upper arm. I had multiple layers on and she didn't break the skin but my arm was bruised from my shoulder to my elbow. The adult picture was taken a few years later at the main zoo when we went back to visit.
For what it's worth I also hand raised a gazelle that was abandoned by its mom shortly after birth in the main zoo. The vet did not expect her to survive but she diid and was also eventually transferred to the main zoo too. When I look at that picture now she kind of reminds me of Hobbes 😊5 -
@shanaber That is so cool. What a rewarding experience! I can’t imagine what having an actual tiger in an apartment is like. Although sometimes with my 3 kids it does feel like a zoo .
Today is a holiday in my state. No, not because of Halloween, but Reformation Day. Tomorrow will be more of a holiday for me though, because the kids are finally back in school after a 2.5 week fall break.
Because of the holiday, I was able to get out for a 12.3km run. It was a bit dark with misty rain. The hills were beckoning me, but I had to get back to switch kid duty with my husband. Maybe next time. 177.6/160km for October.
I love green tunnels.

Down to the wire, but I made my goal for the month. Congratulations to all whether you met or exceed your goal or fell just a little bit short. The important thing about setting goals is it makes me try on days that I would rather be a slug!
Thanks for setting up November @alphahowls!
Love the safari pictures @tarun_yadavA , the animals that @shanaber cared for, and all the lovely scenery! @Laurz9191 – what kind of crops were those growing along your route yesterday?

2.1 today so I think I’m at 13.8/20 …I’ll go join the November challenge now so I’m doing the whole month and not just a week and a half or whatever…9
-
nothing like a challenge to make you pick it up! I decided yesterday afternoon while running that I could hit 200 for the month. My watch died about 9.5 yesterday LOL but today I did 2 short runs to finish it up. I must say it was a lot but glad I did it.
I probably will still set a lower goal for Nov.

It was 32°F this morning when I ran, so officially freezing. I wore long pants and my other pair of sleeves and gloves and a headband for my ears. I was actually pretty comfortable. My thumbs were cold, but other than that I was good. It is so hard for me to know how to dress when it is cold. It is easy to over dress, but I think I did good today. Plus, I had new shoes and that's always nice. The hardest part of the run was getting out the door, but once I did I really enjoyed it. It was cold, but it was a pretty morning. I didn't really see any critters, but I did see a shooting start. I thought of you @Mari33a. I also saw 4 socks and the insole from a shoe, but not my missing sleeve. I only overlapped part of my run from Sunday though.
@shanaber That tiger and gazelle are both so cute! I hope everything goes well with the infusion.
That's a lot of mileage @SummerSkier!
There was a lot of great running this month. Congrats to all who made their goal and to all who worked hard at it. Thanks for setting us up for next month @AlphaHowls!
Here is some shoe porn for you:

OOOOOO @kgirlhart I really was overdressed badly for 10 miles yesterday and did not even know I was dehydrated until I started feeling sick later. Layers are usually my friend but it was the first really cold day. sigh. And TEAL SHOES 💖💖💖💖💖 Gotta love the motivation of new shoes to get you out the door!3
-
@kgirlhart I love that color! My current pair are black Sauconys - for lack of a better alternative.1

GREAT JOB this month @kgirlhart !! 😀1
-
Great finish to October @kgirlhart! You are much tougher than I...no way could I run in 32F. Shoes are really nice. Which Sauconys are those? Like @Laurz9191 the last pair of shoes I bought were the black Saucony Endorphin Speed 2s, just because they were about $50 cheaper than the other colors 😉
@SummerSkier you really killed it this month! Very impressive!!
@shanaber you had a cool job at the zoo. Not many people have had that experience. That's awesome. Hope you treatments go well!
8 miles this afternoon. Weather was awesome, but the run felt weird. Felt like I was forcing it for the first 4 miles. Then I just gave in and tried to relax. The last 4 felt a little better, but still off. For some reason I think it is the Kinvara shoes. Just feels like running in sand or something; no energy return. Just have to use them for purely easy runs I guess.
5 -
@kgirlhart An albino skunk? That's interesting. Sorry you lost one of your favorite sleeves. Love that shoe porn!
Love the pictures from your safari @tarun_yadavA !
@martaindale I love that your dad made you such a great breakfast after your run on the 28th!
@shanaber It is so cool that you got to help hand-raise Taj..and the gazelle. What a great experience! I'm sure that bite from Taj was scary, even if you knew he was just playing. I wonder if he recognized your scent when you went to visit later? Hey, if I do La Jolla, I would have to walk/run. Maybe we could do it together. I hope you transfusion went well and you recover quickly from it.
I was so far behind in reading the posts, but I did and liked or hugged where appropriate. You all did great with your running this month.
I'm not even sure the last time I posted and don't want to go into details. I'll just say that due to 4 days of sawing/splitting/hauling wood and 2 days of playing (Bryson City with my aunt and Hot Springs with my mom) last week didn't leave much time for running. So, I didn't make my goal of 90 miles, but did manage 80, which I am happy with since I spent 20h09m51s doing other activities - tennis, wood, leaves, and mowing.
Thanks for setting up Nov @AlphaHowls ! It's hard to believe that Oct is gone already!
5 -
@scott6255 I have had shoes like that (I try different styles quite a lot) which seem to just be flat with no return of energy. Even some of the nikes I have tried. I usually send them back because I am so spoiled by the ones which have bounce. Unfortunately I sometimes think the better the shoe (lighter more bounce etc) the less they last as the materials wear out sooner. Just an impression I get. Maybe just because my most favorites I notice when they have to leave the building because they give me shin splints.
@quilteryoyo you had a pretty durn successful month and as always you found lots of time to support us here. Thank you!
See everyone in Nov thread.4 -
