OCTOBER 2023 Monthly Running Challenge

Have the members of this group ever tried to get together in a city for a racing event? Some cities have multiple races in one day, like an 8K, 1/2 marathon and marathon all in the same morning with staggered start times. That way we can each pick what works for us at our levelchris_in_cal wrote: »I love running in La Jolla!
You should check out the La Jolla HM or the San Diego Holiday Half. La Jolla HM is beautiful and goes up from Del Mar to the Torrey Pines Mesa and finishes at La Jolla Cove.
@shanaber Let's collaborate and host a "MFP monthly running thread" Race and Meetup at the 2024 version of the La Jolla HM. You in?
We can all wear Team MFP "quilt style" running shirts.
Here's the last push for this kind of thing.
The beautiful La Jolla Half in 2024. Who's ready to form the planning committee?4 -
chris_in_cal wrote: »I have my Garmin. Who’s using Garmin?
Probably most here use Garmin, it is the oldest 'runners' watch. Fitbit and Apple are very common too. Good smaller players are Suunto and Polar.
This is all the actual watch 'hardware' end of things. MFP, Strava, Training Peaks, and all of these companies' various apps are the software/analysis/social end of things.
Some advice I've heard, that makes a lot of sense is that "All the hardware is basically very similar, go where most of your friends are, because that will keep you going."
Yeah, I also have a Garmin. I'm not quite convinced by it's ability to measure distance correctly though. I just need a few trees, even without leaves or some houses lining a street and the measured distance is shorter. Found a solution in the end: I'm using a footpod, without calibration factor and method set to correct distance. Oddly then I get the correct distance (on measured race routes).4 -

You did great @martaindale . Hahaha I guess Garmin just likes pain.
Nice running @Laurz9191 . Lovely pictures!
Nice running @Mari33a .
You are doing great @mnsmov15 !
I'm so glad to see that you had the energy for a run too @shanaber. Love your beach pictures. Too bad about the monarchs.
Love your travels @tarun_yadavA . I am curious if the vegetarian Whopper at Burger King is made to taste like beef or something else.
As a vegetarian I have no idea what beef tastes like, but I know Burger King here claims their veggie whopper tastes just like what they call a real whopper.
Somehow, I doubt it. They're edible, but generally, the stuff they call meat substitutes that they say taste like the real thing taste like cardboard.2 -
@quilteryoyo @eleanorhawkins hello ladies!
I don't mind the meat substitute stuff like Beyond and Impossible... But don't think they're using that out here in this part of Asia... Looks like some battered chickpea/potato/kidney bean concoction3 -

@tarun_yadavA good looking family! Looks like y'all are having fun on your trip. Glad you are enjoying the local sites and food.
More rain this morning. Got in 5 TM miles. Taking tomorrow off work to babysit some workers at the house. So hopefully I can get out for a run before they get here.

I took yesterday as a rest day, and I ran 7 miles today. There were lots of puddles and the humidity was 100%. But it was only 68°, so it wasn't too unpleasant. It is supposed to rain all weekend. I hope I will be able to get my long run in, but today's run puts me at 132 miles for October so I did hit my goal this month.

8 miles this morning. Pretty miserable at 75F and 90% humidity, but glad to be able to run outside again. Can't believe November is around the corner and I am running shirtless outside. Then next week we aren't supposed to get out of the 50's all week. Summer -> Winter. We have two seasons here in Texas 😏

@chris_in_cal I would love to do that race, but not sure I would be ready for 2024. Maybe 2025?
@tarun_yadavA That does NOT sound appetizing at all! @eleanorhawkins I tend to think most meat substitutes taste like cardboard too. I've just always found it interesting that people who have an aversion to eating meat eat things that are "supposed" to taste like meat.
Nice @Mari33a .
Nice running @kgirlhart and congratulations on hitting your goal for the month already.
@Scott6255 Glad you got in your run before the workers showed up. We are having summer to winter weather too. We're supposed to have near record high tomorrow and near record low next Wed morning. Those 50 degree changes are brutal.

After I posted that I was thinking, as marathon training is a planning project as much as a running project it would be smart to project out.
How about this as an MFP monthly running thread racing meetup calendar:
2024 La Jolla Half Marathon
2025 'somewhere in' Texas Half Marathon
2026 'somewhere in' London Half Marathon
2027 'somewhere along' US Eastern Seaboard Half Marathon

hmmmm I probably will never be ready for a half sadly. But I might do a 10K.
Loving the photos and your adventure @tarun_yadavA What a wonderful family trip you are having.
Oh my the BEACH photos Shana... AMAZING. 💖💖💖 Looks like you and Hobbes had a great time.
@quilteryoyo your activity continues to be incredible. How on earth you get it all done slays me. I would be toast. every. single. day.
Update about 170 miles to date for Oct out of 100 goal. (I might be overachieving this month?)
Yesterday it was slightly drizzly and I looked at the radar before heading out. I could see one little shower but then it looked like it would back off. So I put on an older pair of shoes and it was warm enough and set off. About 1/4 mile in it started to rain. About 3/4 mile in it started to DOWNPOUR🌊🌊🌊 but no thunder or lightning so I figured I was already drenched. Now I had just updated my watch and where the HECk was the water button? lol. Anyway, I kept going and it never stopped the whole way. The streets were literally rivers and I was glad my flashing lights were somewhat waterproof and very bright.
Today it was not raining but it might as well have been. It had to be 100% humidity and mid to upper 70's out. Summertime weather for sure. I had to replace my fitbt charge 5 with a charge 6 yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was matched to my watch for distance even if strava continues to cheat me by a few 10ths... 🤥🤥 Anyway, we are expecting winter on Monday so not sure where I will end up. I am sure I won't hit 200 miles but am pretty happy with how things have gone this month. Not sure why I have upped my mileage so much as when I start out I certainly don't intend any distance but it seems to just happen. I think being injury and illness free (knock on wood) certainly helps a TON. Or maybe it is the little 10 min every other day strength sessions?🤷♀️🤷♀️ Either way. Loving the endorphins of the longer runs.

Hello Everyone!
Yesterday morning I finally succeeded in getting a longer run in at 14.2km. It was drizzling. Today it was raining basically the whole run, 11.1km but I didn’t mind. It wasnt too cold and it was quite fun to dodge the puddles. Also, although the paths were dirt, they weren’t too muddy yet. I even stopped to take some pictures.
@tarun_yadavA Those are some awesome pictures! It looks like you all are really enjoying your adventures!
@chris_in_cal I think your racing idea is a great idea! Everything is too far away from me though .
@Scott6255 Roller coaster weather is such a challenge for your body. We have that A LOT here. I am not a fan. But I do really really appreciate those perfect elusive fall days where the skies are bright and it is nice and cool and colourful out.
@SummerSkier Wow! That’s cool you got so many unexpected miles this month!
I just have 3km more to reach my goal . 157.1/160km for October.5 -

I have been running a shorter run on Fridays, but it is supposed to be rainy/stormy all weekend and I just don't know if I will be able to get a long run in or not, so I ran 6.25 miles because I wanted to at least get 10K this weekend. It was 75°F with 95% humidity at 5:45 this morning. I thought it was going to be miserable, but once I got going it wasn't too bad. It was pretty wet outside. I saw lots of snails on the street/sidewalks. I also saw 4 skunks today. The first two that I saw were together and one of them was an albino.

My body may be too worn out by 2027, but east coast options could be Raleigh NC in November offering 5K, 8K, half and whole marathon races all on the same day.
Richmond, VA also offers November races of 8K, half and whole marathons all same day.
Those of us with knees that are getting older can run the shorter races while also cheering on those running the longer ones.
Weather for both cities is usually reasonably cool great running weather.7 -

Dublin not a million miles from me either!
Never been... Belfast - yes (loved it!!!), Dublin - no!6 -
Hi everyone!
We did Ranthambore National Park... 3 safaris. Got a Tiger sighting on the third and final attempt!
Compared to our October trip to South Africa last year... Tigers are a lot *LOT* harder to spot than Lions! Firstly the vegetation is different and secondly, (unless mummy with cubs) Tigers are solitary cats.
Oh and spotted a bear! To the avid wildlife lovers and safari going folk here... Rarer spot than Tigers. Been Yosemite, Yellowstone... No joy. But managed one here - where they aren't even the Apex predator!
Pics!Bear
Tiger - not an insta hashtag-able post I grant you
The old palatial fort
Crocs (bigger than Caiman, but smaller than a FL gator!)
Fly back Wednesday! Will get a couple more Elliptical+weights workouts in a gym in Delhi before then.7 -

I'm in too.
I will look at my work schedule when I get home and see if may 18, 2024 is doable for me for la Jolla. I know it sounds nuts, but our schedule is so competitive for time off that we plan a year out most of the time.5 -

I have been negligent in adding my runs this week.
Thursday I did an easy 6 miles. It was crazy hot but I managed to catch some rain for the first 3 miles, which felt awesome.
The next morning was a quick 3 miles before work. It was like running in a sauna and I really thought about not doing it, but I'm glad I did. I also needed to test run a dress that I'm using for my upcoming race. It will be comfortable enough for a 10k fun run.
Today I did 10 miles on the roads in Huntsville state park. I am camping with my dad and my kid. It rained quite a bit the last few days and I wasn't sure what state the trails are in. I ran every road and camping loop in the park at least once. It's a pretty park and the road traffic wasn't too crazy. It was hot and very humid so I struggled a bit but my dad made me french toast and bacon afterwards, which was delicious.

Oh no, I just realized that October is nearly over! I love running over my local, rather big (for Europe) and tree-covered graveyard. It will close at 17:00 from November to end of February, and there's no way I can run this early Back to road running in town then.7
