@Scott6255 That was a great pace and a great job on your race. I hope tomorrow's race goes well.
@AlphaHowls Congratulations on your AG win. That sounds scary, but you did a great job pushing through. I would have been so disappointed about the lack of waffles.4 -
@Scott6255 awesome race. You and the 'old guys' all rock!
@AlphaHowls wow, awesome race too, congrats! I would guess the jelly feeling was just because you were pushing harder than you're used to, but listen to your body for a few days and make sure. Hate it when organisers are so disorganised.4 -
Morning all
Got in 4.5M (09"23) this morning.
Total to 81 for the month (goal of 70).
Probably won't get to run now... Early starts/long drives and a lot of sight seeing.
Going:
Haridwar (picturesque 'holy city' by the River Ganges);
Amritsar (Golden Temple, India-Pakistan border and gate closing ceremony);
Jaipur;
Ranthambore national park - for Tiger safari (one we're all excited about).
(Wife a little salty about missing out Taj Mahal; whilst eldest, the teen, a bit salty about not being able to watch a Cricket game in the stadium).
Some food p0rn picsKFC India
Got the biryani bucket, and a fusion 'Tandoori Zinger' burger. Youngest loved it. Wants to eat it every day now 🙈
From last night... Speciality of Delhi... Butter chicken and Naan5 -
Great run @tarun_yadavA ! Love the food pictures. I think the KFC things are interesting. I wonder what Colonel Sanders would say about that. I would be excited about the tiger safari too. Enjoy your time with family.2

Thank you lol @quilteryoyo1

Totally impressed with our racing team yesterday. wow 🌟🌟🌟🌟
@Scott6255 - you were flying and you ARE in a rough age group but wow. 4th is nothing to sneeze at and you had a PB.. (and your HR was not even over 140's~!! which I know for you is really high but still shows how much effort you put in)
@AlphaHowls - that's a little scary about the jelly legs but you were going so much faster than usual for you. Congratulations on your finish and win! Hope all is back to normal this morning. I can see you may be incorporating some much faster paces in your runs for the future so your body gets used to is. How was your heart rate?
@tarun_yadavA sounds like you just can't please everyone but you have a great adventure planned and even if you are not running you will be busy and getting a lot of walking in I imagine. Have a great vacation and looking forward to the safari pictures!🐅🐅🐅🐅🐅🐅
@quilteryoyo I have decided you are a triathlete for ALL you do in Tennis and RUnning and HARD WORK! and how you fit it all in amazes me. Have you decided yet on the race in Dec? Edit to say that my LDL to HDL ratio is pretty good 3.1 (less than 5 is green( and my Dr doesn't push meds on me at all but I am just disappointed that my total is still high at 236 but it is down from 239 last year even if that's probably not a significant #. I mean not scary high but still. I was reading and it looks like that is also just another aging thing that happens to. My fasting blood sugar was green this time whereas the past few years it has been just a touch over the 100 mark. So improvements overall. But it just really goes to show that all the weight loss and exercise and eating right doesn't mean you will be perfect (genetics I guess )4 -
@Scott6255 and @AlphaHowls It sounds like you each had very intense races and really preformed to your best! @scott6255 You did awesome even if it was 4th and not 3rd in your age group! You were so fast! You never know who else you’ll be racing against!
@AlphaHowls If you didn’t have control of legs and upper body it sounds like your mind carried you through that finish line. That’s awesome! I hope your legs aren’t too jelly-like today. Great time too! You mentioned wanting to PR. Was it a PR for you? I am crossing my fingers for you that it was! And running out of waffles 🧇 at a waffle race. That sounds pretty sad for all the runners who didn’t get one.
I got a nice fall run in this morning. The leaves are changing and the weather was nice and mild. I got stung by a wasp yesterday right in a vein on top of my hand and my hand is sooooo swollen it bothered me the whole run. I hope the swelling goes away soon. Pictures of today’s fall colors in the spoiler.
Today 9.5km. 112.5/160km for October.

@tarun_yadavA nice run and the food looks really good! Thanks for that.
Thanks everyone for the race kudos. Today's race wasn't so great. Most (and largest, longest, steepest) hills I have ever had in a race. And after yesterday it was overwhelming. But I raced as hard as I could, and managed to get a PR for 10 miles. Just over 8 minute pace. Official results:
8:03 pace
9 out of 90 M60-64
493 of 3407 overall
Looking forward to a rest day after 7 days in a row.
But Garmin bumped my VO2 up to 60 after 2 hard days of running 😁

I am not at my 'normal' today. I have ended my half marathon +distance streak at 1182 days 10/21/2023. Not disappointed, but sort of. I love distance. I am not a racer, but wanted to do my best yesterday. My mother told me the night before as I put her to bed, "do your best!"
I got myself out of bed this morning, slow and sore, but made the 1 mile to keep my overall run streak.
10/22 1.49 miles, 2001 days on the run
My heartfelt thank you for the comments. It is soothing the little beast inside of me.
I have talked to a few people (runners) and read here and there, but still do not know what really was happening. I thought it was 'the wall' that I have read and heard about, but from what I am reading/hearing, I would not have gotten up. It could have been glycogen depletion and just never pushing that hard before.
@Laurz9191
PR/PB I decided that it is all of the above. My hard drive on my computer failed about 2 years ago and I lost all the data I had. For this particular race, it is PR/PB. I have not been under 2 hours in a long time.
So, I went digging and found some data. Looks like about 50 seconds difference from 2017 and a much younger me.

@Scott6255 and @AlphaHowls I really liked your race reports. Just amazing!
Some of the runners here....I'm just saying. Wow.5 -
@AlphaHowls Awesome racing even if the end was a little scary. I also am shocked at the lack of food given how many people were still behind you. That's really bad planning.
@Scott6255 Fantastic racing! It's really impressive that you were able to pull out any speed at all for the 10 miler after such a hard race the day before. Your age group was speedy!5 -

Never got around to posting my long run yesterday. I went to the Greenway trail. It was a beautiful morning and I was a little surprised at how few people were out. The run went very well. It occurred to me as I was starting this run that I didn't know what my target long run pace is. I remembered it was supposed to be a little faster than easy pace but not as fast as race pace. I figured if I stayed around 10-10:30, I'd be ok. My slowest mile was 10:19, most of the miles were right around 10 mins and I did purposefully pushed harder the last mile and got down to 9:39. I looked up the paces today and the book is confusing because the charts say marathon not half-marathon so I went to an online calculator and those were different than the book and the range was wide (10:30-11:49). The book was 10:15 if I'm guessing correctly. So, maybe a touch faster than it should have been but I felt strong so it'll do.
Yesterday afternoon the kid and I saw Sweeney Todd. It is now their favorite musical. I thought it was really good but I think rent still holds the top spot for me.7 -
Goofing off, too tired to do anything. Data nerding
2022 130.6 lbs vs 2023 117.67 -
That's so sweet of you to say @SummerSkier ! I do think a lot of our health is genetics, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I'm sure your doctor was happy that things are heading in the right direction.
@Laurz9191 Sorry about the wasp sting and hope it feel better soon! Great run and love the picture.
@Scott6255 Great running. Sounds like a tough race with those hills. Congrats on your 10 mile PR. That's awesome!
All of your HMs have been impressive @AlphaHowls ! I hope you recovery quickly from yesterday. You look great then and now!
You are doing great @yirara . You are right. It doesn't matter that you didn't run as far as you were hoping. At least you were out there and doing what you could. I continually struggle with wanting to got faster vs further. I think you have to work on one of those at a time, but I want both.
Great running @martaindale . That's a great pace for 10 miles!6 -

It has been a busy weekend. My sisters and Mom and I had planned to get together in September, but one sister and her husband had covid, so we rescheduled to yesterday. Then my husband and I decided to paint our house. We started last weekend and since I already had the plans with my sisters for Saturday, I took off work Friday so I could paint. Today we painted some more, but I got up early because I didn't want to miss my run.
It was a nice run. It was 68°F and overcast. I ran 11 miles. I did see a few dogs out today. There were a couple of German Shepherds near the park. I saw them from a distance though and just re-routed to avoid them. They might have been really nice dogs, but I wasn't taking any chances.
After my run I did a quick 10 minutes of yoga to stretch then went to the grocery store before painting some more. Now I am just resting and watching the Rangers. My Dad was a huge Rangers fan, so I am rooting for them, but I guess Texas will be in the World Series either way.
Congratulations on the PR @scott6255!

Hi All - I have been following along, liking and hugging as appropriate even if not commenting.
@Scott6255 - fantastic racing on both days! I can't imagine racing to a 4th place PR in the 15k then coming back the next day to race another PR in the 10k! All that hot weather running paid off clearly.
@AlphaHowls - that is so strange about your 'out of control legs' experience. I wish we had @MobyCarp to explain it for us. I am so impressed that you were able to keep going, get a fantastic finish time and an age group win! I hope they will be sending you your place medal at some point. I am disappointed that they were not more organized and had no food... the Hoptown Half has always had a good reputation. Did they change management this year?
You had a fantastic run (pun intended) with your HM distance streak! Will you be setting a new goal or just taking it day by day for now? You looked great BTW at 130 and look terrific now!
@tarun_yadavA - 1st of all your son is adorable! Not sure what to say about the KFC food. I am not a KFC fan in general but I would try the offerings just to see what they were like. What I really want is the butter chicken and the fresh naan - Oh.My.Goodness it looks delicious and I am drooling now!
Can't wait to see the pictures of your adventures and especially the tigers!
@SummerSkier - Many years ago my doctor put me on statins and it was terrible. I had all kinds of issues with muscle cramps and loss of strength (interestingly my brother had the same issues-genetics?). I stopped taking them and as I lost weight and got in shape all my numbers went down. Most medical personnel are really surprised that I take no prescription medication other than for my thyroid. I guess there aren't many 67+ yo's who don't have a least a couple of meds for BP or something. Of course now I have what looks like a pharmacy but it is only temporary.
Going way back in the thread I wanted to comment on the 'math nerd' comments. At some point a while ago we had a question one month about what type of work we all do/did and so many were technical -math, IT, engineering, etc.. It probably explains why so many of us are also data nerds.
I have had a couple of tough weeks. I knew it was going to get more intense the more treatments I had but I have been pretty optimistic since I wasn't having many side affects or issues. Well... it all finally caught up to me and I was just completely exhausted. One day I managed only 1000 steps 😳. I am finally feeling a bit better and got in a walk yesterday and today. I am officially 50% done with my treatments and to celebrate we are heading off tomorrow to go up the coast for a few days of relaxing, walking on the beach/boardwalk, maybe some yoga and just watching the ocean. Will get Hobbes the Vizsla out for a short walk in the morning before we head off. Not sure if I will hit my minimal walking goal for the month but will keep doing whatever I can when I can.
Cute Halloween pictures under the spoiler - not running related...The neighborhood skellies are having a CA halloween party (note up until today it has been in the 85-90F)
Hobbes' skellie fren, Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes anyone?), trying to escape our house to go to the party9 -
@AlphaHowls Your HM + streak was amazing and inspiring!
@tarun_yadavA I have to agree @shanaber butter chicken & naan > kfc . Have a great time touring!
@Scott6255 Enjoy your well earned rest day(s?)!

It was a brisk 38F for this morning’s run. Time to pull out the long pants, gloves and ear warmers. At least I had 2 out of 3 this morning.
@tarun_yadavA – No family vacation is complete without a little saltiness! What a cutie pie your son is! The butter chicken looks amazing.
Ouch Laurz9191 – bee stings are so painful. What a lovely running route.
@Scott6255 – Another excellent race for you! You worked hard and it shows! Congratulations!
@AlphaHowls – I know ending your HM streak was a difficult decision but I’m so glad you listened to your body. We’re in this thing for the long haul! I’m looking forward to following along on your next streaking adventure! You definitely look leaner in the 2023 picture vs. 2022. I think you look great in both photos.
Great long run pace @martaindale! Glad you and the kid enjoyed some theatre time together.
@kgirlhart – Sounds like you had a big cross training weekend! I’m not a big baseball fan but I’m pulling for the Rangers after hearing about Evan Carter and his Christian testimony.
Good to see you @shanaber and yay for being over half done with the treatments!! The skeletons are awesome!
@quilteryoyo – Is tennis season almost over?
@chris_in_cal – You have been very quiet lately. Still on jury duty?

I was pretty tired this morning, but we are supposed to get rain all week, so I figured I'd better run today since it wasn't stormy. It was warm, at 75°F and kind of humid. So I kept the pace easy and ran 6 miles. I'm hoping that I will be able to reach my goal this month, but if we have storms I may not. I am hoping for rain, but not lightning or hail.
6 -
Great running @kgirlhart ! I hope you enjoyed your visit with your family. Painting is a great workout in and of itself. My arms would be sore for sure.
@shanaber You are doing great with getting out and doing what you can when you can. I am so glad that you are at the half way point with your treatments. Enjoy your time on the coast!!! Calvin and Hobbes.....
Great running @Teresa502 ! As for tennis, we don't have anymore league matches, so I guess you can say that tennis season is over. We will continue to try to get together and play some indoors or out when the weather is nice.
Great running @kgirlhart ! I hope you get the rain you need, but no hail.

My plan called for 5 x 1k repeats. I had to run after work so it was hot (mid 80"s) and I forgot my salt tablets, which I missed quite a bit. I wanted to try to complete the workout but I wasn't sure how it would go. I managed to get down to the target pace but it was hard to hold. The first 2 were about 10 secs off, the third was 15 secs off. On the fourth, I couldn't get down below a 9 min pace (target 8:30) so I bailed part way through. No point in pushing hard as my legs were clearly giving out. I just ran easy for the rest of the workout and finished the mileage. Anyway, the route was an out and back so I had to get back to my car.
I really prefer doing speed work in the morning. I think I would have been able to pull that workout off in the morning. I'm going to chalk this bomb up to conditions and time of day.

I spent the morning at mom's while the electricians finished up the work she had done. Afterwards, I went to work at daycare for about 4.5 hours.
When I got home, I went out for a run on the driveway. It was too pretty of a day not to...66F (18.9C) and beautiful blue skies.
I saw this interesting cloud as I was finishing up my run.
I decided to try for a 30 min easy run and then see how I felt. I wound up running 3.25 miles in 45:15 min. I did run a little bit more of the uphill part of the driveway than I normally do - slowly - but overall it felt pretty good. My avg pace was 13:55 min/mile. Avg HR was 143, with a max of 152 bpm.5 -

I ran again in the almost dark and it was great. I need to get a light for Dakota cos the time changes at the weekend and its going to be getting dark from 5pm.
@Scott6255 - Congratulation on great racing!
@AlphaHowls - Congratulations to you too, you have unbelievable willpower to be able to push so hard!

first rest day this morning yesterday (I hate seeing the avg miles plummet but that's just my issue I guess) It was pouring rain in the morning and I could tell from my gadgets that I needed a break from a lot of cardio after a 10 miler Sunday so I did a 30 minute walk at lunch and called it over. Was supposed to possibly play tennis and it would have dried up from the morning rain but then about 3 PM it poured down again so everything was too wet.
Today was humid and warm and my weather notification said I had an hour before it would rain again so I decided to run an hour before work. Then it just did not start to rain so I extended to make it 7 miles total.
Goal of 100 miles 147 to date and 1236 for the year so far. I also have 444 walking miles and am shooting for 500 of those. Maybe I will try for 1500 running miles.

AlphaHowls - that is so strange about your 'out of control legs' experience.
It was actually same management, Parks and Recreation. We did notice less sponsors and not really any volunteers. Times before we have seen cheer teams and more volunteers at water stations. One water station only had 1 person. There are normally bicycles going up and down, encouraging us from the local club, not a single one seen. They also have golf carts/4 wheelers who check and encourage. The one golf cart that passed me early had 4 people inside, and 3 were on their phones.
I did finally get a waffle. They had one waffle iron and it took 8 minutes to make a waffle....Very disappointed for the race to have waffle theme and not be prepared.
There are always goals. Right now, it is one day at a time and keep my overall run streak. Once my legs and hip feel better, I want my distance back. I have to back down from my 6000 miles for 2023 and my 500 push for the month.

Yeah, it's just 1km, but in 750m I managed to get my HR up to 186, because 500 of those meters were uphill. Yeah, you say, what's so special. Well, I can't even run 200m up a tiny incline without having to walk. This was mildly steep even and I managed to run all the way up. I nearly wrote it's worth celebrating the small victories, but actually: this is massive!9
