Today’s gratitude: 1-nephew Tr’s came through brain surgery ok. 2-that I was able to work for people I liked, doing things I enjoyed with the same company for thirty years. That 401K made our retirement comfortable enough to pay $7K cash for Joe’s new-to-him 2001 Jeep Cherokee and leave enough in short term savings to cover possible $10K+ dental bill next year.
Lisa had you told me we’d be together this long back in 1984 I’d have said naaaahhh… Sorry for Kels’ loss, then and now. ((hugs))
Welcome @lehr64 ! Sorry your post and photo didn’t show the first time, mfp can be finicky, especially if posting from a phone ;} G lad it came through at last. Gorgeous artichoke, lovely mantra.
Rita 51 days ?!? Bravissima!!!
Carol please give Lenore my best, hope she and hers are safe and sound. Enjoyed those southern witticisms.
Heather that Edie is quite the artistic wit, and love Bea’s preferred-to-football activities, gathering flowers, chatting, 3-legged person?!?
Lanette I look forward to learning the details of your secret non-chicken mission.
Kylia the hot tub prep sounds bigger than just a “small step.” Well done!
Rori your autumn barrel display is gorgeous! I envy your gift for garden décor.
Machka hope you can talk to the neighbors and ask how to make friends with their dog. He’s probably trying to protect his family/territory. If permitted, you could have the neighbor come out with him and treat him (or you treat him over the fence) whenever he’s calm/quiet. Unfortunately, yelling just reinforces the unwanted behavior :P
Hope to snooze a few more hours before we go into town and get Joe’s “new” Jeep. This is the most excited we’ve been about anything for a long time. Quite an unexpectedly happy anniversary present to us both.10/3: Move: 2 sets PT noD noX&A, chair yoga, short stroll with D. Steps:6961 better than yesterday but still short of goal.Later, lighter, lovelies!
Fuel: sugar in vs mfp=40 CI<CO net=693 vits=1
Live: Joe, readings, BP, AD, AF, coffee chat with D, post office, one load laundry, sauerbraten. Wt:133.2
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
October: Move more: chair yoga, line dance, dailyish PT, play with dogs.
Fuel better: less sugar, dailyish vitamins.
Live NOW: dailyish time with Joe, readings. Open heart and mind before mouth.
2023: Be of good cheer.

Lisa-sorry for your kids' loss of bio-mom. We have found that even if bio-parents have had pretty terrible episodes with kids, there is still a connection there and a sense of loss. They are very fortunate to have you in their lives. Drugs and mental health issues are tearing many families apart right now.
Kylia-the weather here has been wonderful. Had very stressful late afternoon/early evening yesterday and my walk at sunset was so helpful. Hope the hot tub is working for you tonight!
Rita-congrats on 51 days-that is a good accomplishment. One day at a time.
Had more to say but still feeling disjointed from yesterday. So good to have you ladies here to help keep me grounded at times.
Need to catch up on issue neglected while dealing with yesterday's emergency.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

Good morning!
Finished up hot tub and planted my bum in it this morning. It always feels great, so can't understand why I just can't seem to get in....
Have to rein in this eating thing. My breakfast was high fiber and protein, so let's see if that will keep me full longer. If I don't move though I only have 500 calories left for day. No winder scale going stupid. I have this!
NSV- 10k steps yesterday!
Much love and have a great day!

Rori - Always good to see you, and so pleased with your happiness with your life! Sounds like the Stretch Lab is very much working. Love the autumn décor. That is a craft, in and of itself, and one I don't have. And my dear friend, if you're not enthusiastic about the project you have at hand, bundle it up and donate it, just like it is to someone who will be! There is always someone in the Goodwill or Salvation Army stores looking for those kinds of unfinished pieces. Not finishing a project is not a failure, it's just your subconscious telling you it wasn't the right thing to begin with. Find something that excites you, instead, or let it find you.
Barbara AHMOD - So pleased the financial things are less worrying because of your ability to love a job for thirty years. So far the only thing I've done for 30 years is keep breathing! Financial woes are so draining at so many levels, and so pleased you're doing well. We're thinking about getting another vehicle - my Passat is beginning to have one thing after another come up, small stuff so far, but enough that it's time to start looking for a replacement, I'm afraid. Unfortunately, Corey said something like that out loud, in the car, and by the time we got home the engine light came on. It's nothing, just an emissions glitch, but I've tried to tell him not to say stuff like that where the car can hear you! 👀🙃
Machka - It's vaguely possible that a solid wall would be of use to keep a dog quiet, but I can tell you that the planted barriers are of no use whatsoever, as the dog still knows you're there, and that's excuse enough to bark. Neighbors who don't care whether their dogs bark are not going to change their behavior, most likely. My neighbors always apologize, but do nothing. The only time the next-door dog(s) stopped barking is when the family moved into town for a blessed six months or kenneled the dogs for three weeks while they were traveling. We've simply moved most of our activity to the back of the house, where the dogs can see us less and eventually get bored with barking at us or find something else, like a bird to bark at. They never stop for long.
Ginny - Yesterday's emergency? Hope it was a work thing, and not a you thing, and that everything's OK! Thank you to you and others for the words on the kids' bio-mom. All I could tell them was that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. They had been talking to the drugs or the disease for a long, long time, and done their grieving for the last decade while she slowly killed herself. She was only 58.
More in a bit,
Love,

Ooooofffff! Knackered.
Lovely lunch in a foursome. Pleasant chat.
Before that I had managed to spend my gift voucher on a pair of black trousers.
After lunch I went off to buy tiny pots for decanting stuff for the plane. We are only taking cabin bags. Also a tiny toothpaste.
Then I looked for a dish drainer. No luck. Then I went to buy organic eggs, and couldn't resist a glossy magazine, and some vanilla slices for DH.
I'm going to have two boiled eggs and soldiers for dinner. DH scrambled. Huge fish and chips for lunch.
I had a long conversation after the eggs, because I had to sit down, everything was hurting so much. A lady chatted to me. Another long conversation on the bus as I sat in the priority seats, next to a handsome young man. Turns out he has every auto immune thing going and is on heavy painkillers. We swopped our tales of woe.
So a long, but interesting day.

Hi Gals,
Flea – Levi and I are adjusting to our new “normal” I love this dog so much, but his needs take more and more time. I don’t resent it at all and hope I am paying it forward for good care for myself in my older years. But the holidays are coming and that means being away for a long day at Thanksgiving and Christmas – at minimum and preferably being gone one or two nights at Christmas and this year that will be hard, he really needs to be in a place he has memorized so he can get around. Being his seeing eye human is a full-time job. I have gained a new appreciation of seeing eye dogs. I did have a friend suggest I put him down, ( I was so hurt) and that time will come, but just because his sight is going is not a reason to do that. I will do it when his quality of life is not good.
I found a larger ball that has a light in it that flashes as it bounces and we have been playing ball in the dark, he still sees high contrast and movement. So we play ball for a bit outside before bed time.
Love ya all,

Machka wrote “There's even a trend encouraging women to let their hair go natural and show their greys. I've thought about it, but I'm just not ready. Some ladies I know have done it and they look all right. One in particular looks really good, but her natural grey is quite silvery and she's pretty much completely silver grey so it's quite striking.
Machka in Oz”
I turned grey/white very early, around 30 years old I had about 25% white so started coloring my here then. At 45% I had a haircut and the hair dresser said I was about 75% white/grey. At 50 Years old, I figured I was old enough to be a grandmother (always told my kids they couldn’t make me a grandmother (‘memere’) until I was 50), so at that birthday, I had my hair colored to blond to begin letting the grey go in. They burnt my hair so got it cut short (used to be shoulder length). Since then have gone ‘au naturale’! With my white hair and natural waves, every hairdresser takes all the time in the world complimenting my hair and playing with it! LOL. I enjoy the pampering. 😊 Which leads me to today’s project, i think I will go get my haircut today.

Kim - I'm sorry about your friend's comment - if it helps, it's probably much more about how she feels about her own capabilities rather than yours or Levi's. What is the honest truth is that Levi ended up with the right person for him.
Still not back to feeling right today, but better than I felt yesterday. I bailed on stretching and resistance yesterday because I wasn't feeling well, and I think it may have been the wrong thing to do. MIght well be when I need it most. As soon as I'm finished here, I'll go do that.
Rori's beautiful, seasonal harvest-themed piece is such a wonderful thing to look at, but I'm far too lazy now to do something that I'll have to take down in a few months! If it's not something that can gather dust for at least a year, I'm always reluctant... I genuinely enjoy others' displays of seasonal spirit, up to and including Christmas lights, with absolutely no need to do that myself. This is of great comfort to Corey--I think he would put up the lights, etc. if I asked, but is relieved that I don't.
Time to go stretch and work this beat-up body, then shower and see if I can get some energy generated for the afternoon to get some more sewing done on cushions and quilt.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in Arkansas, with the wandering rain showers bringing the cool day and lovely scent of petrichor - rain on the leaves and dust of early autumn. Love the word itself - from the Greek words 'petra', meaning stone, and 'ichor', "the ethereal fluid taking the place of blood in the veins of the ancient Greek gods."5 -
I have been pondering goals this month. For me, the absence of goals is liberating. For me, I can ruin a day so easily by merely pondering straying off my path. Even if I haven't actually eaten or done anything wrong. Pretty sad. So I have been stressing some, of course things out of my control. So I started back on taking my anti depression meds. Just making it more of a continuous thing, and give me more of a steady feeling. I tend to want to solve the worlds problems to the point that I am not sleeping. Maybe I need to get back on doxiprin, my sleep aid. I was supposed to have a doctors appt reviewing my meds this week but she cancelled. I need to make a new one hopefully this next week. Just to chat over things.
Today is misty, and gray on the island. Was going to go with husband off island to our car dealers to get a part that was recalled corrected, but I decided to stay home. We were going to walk around Anacortes which is a town on Fidalgo island, but its not really a great day for that.
We bought a nice heating blanket for the bed, and between the gel/foam coil new mattress and that, we are sleeping better (when I do go to sleep). We each have our own controller so that's nice. He tells me if he wants me to wake up, he can just crank it up to level 12! Aaaack, I would be so annoyed, but he would never actually do that... Just one of the things he says to be funny.

Ladies - thank you for the chicken memes! Rita - I'll send the girls down in their Flying Saucer chicken coop to pick you up next year for the Flying Saucer party! Gladys says she'll steer so it might be a bumpy ride. But thrilling!
Kim - very nice outfit and you are cute as a bug!!! So glad it turned out manageable weather-wise. If I was getting married again I'd be honored to have you officiate at my wedding. You are the perfect parent for your sweet Levi as he ages.
Tracey - Glad to hear things are moving along with the wall project. I’m sure it will turn out great.
Lisa - OK, that makes sense about Tyler's dad. I thought wow, Kels's ex sure has done a 180 in the past couple months!
Ginny - A retirement place that allows pets and has gardening areas sounds perfect.
Rori - always happy to see you pop in here.
Barbara – the “new” Jeep Cherokee sounds fun and exciting. I see a number of older Jeeps around town so they are built to last. Grateful your 401K is there for the vehicle purchase and anticipated dental costs. And I think you are spot on about volunteering fulfilling the “being needed and wanted” category.
Yesterday. Nothing too exciting. The most that's happened in a single day in a long time. Mostly rambling so feel free to skip!
#1 Blessing Boxes/Dollar Tree Meals.Have any of you heard of "Blessing Boxes" - little outdoor cupboards, usually placed at churches, where people can put shelf stable food and personal items so folks in need can come by at any time of the day and pick up a box of cereal, canned soup, toilet paper? Here's a link that explains it:Yesterday #2 Pulled Pork.
Well, a couple days ago I ran across a Youtube channel called "Dollar Tree Dinners"
The gal makes decent looking, protein heavy sorta nutritous meals from canned and boxed food she picked up there. There was a time DH and I would have gladly eaten these meals and really enjoyed them. So when I went shopping, I grabbed enough items (Walmart's prices were generally a lot less expensive than Dollar Tree) to make up several bags of Dollar Tree Dinner meals. Now the challenge was where to distribute them.
I remembered Blessing Boxes. So I spent yesterday morning calling churches and talking to folks to see if there were any of those in the county. Finally found one, too far for me to drive. Then researched more to see if there was the possibility of building one in other small towns. Just putting out feelers.
I'm having so much fun doing this. It's like being a "Secret Santa". The economy is in a slump and food prices really rising on some items. I'm continually wondering how I can help seniors and others in small towns who don't have access to the daily soup kitchens the two bigger towns have in my area.
I do have a drop spot where I've left different pantry items in the past outside my dog groomer's shop where they have a "free" box. I'm looking forward to putting together all the ingredients for some of these meals with a recipe in each bag and adding a quart of shelf stable Dollar Tree milk and some kind of dessert - canned fruit? Muffins? In the past I've just done a pantry clean out and left odd cans of beans, soup, etc. getting close to the expiration date. It seems more practical to leave ingredients for a complete meal. And who knows, I might even add some breakfast cereal and/or some toothbrushes and toothpaste in the bag or ???. I might have fun stuff to add from my pantry. No Blessing Box, no worries. I'll put together some Blessing Bags.
Many of you already have family members or co-workers or others you "bless" all the time with your presence and generosity and time. I don't have that, so this is my way.A friend told me he was making pulled pork in the crockpot using a pork loin that got lost in his freezer for a couple years and picante sauce and it turned out well. So I picked up a couple pounds of bone in pork shoulder steaks (on sale!) and a jar of Pace Picante mild sauce. Dumped everything in the crockpot yesterday morning (added a little water that I swished out the picante sauce jar with) - it took 2 minutes - and it turned out great. 1 hour on high then 5 hours on low. It made 5 cups of meat so I'll get at least 8 meals for under $10. Plus I have nearly 2 cups of juice I can use in other recipes.
Yesterday #3 Pressure washing the house/deck.Roger who repaired and repainted my chimney stack called at 3:30 and asked if it was a good time to come out and spray the house with mildew killer and pressure wash it and the deck. I said sure. He arrived at 4 and left at 7. He needs to come back and re-caulk part of the house siding. I need to restain the deck if the weather holds this week. And I've started a list of little inside jobs he can possibly do for me. Replace some faucets, bathroom ceiling fans.
So many more of you I want to respond to but just running out of time.

Hello to all.
We just returned from a week north of the border. We went to see Iron Maiden in Calgary and then spent a few days in Banff National Park. That was amazingly beautiful. The mountains looked as if someone placed a photo behind the lakes. We couldn't believe something so perfect was real. We managed several hikes. The last one was 6.5 miles/10.4 km led to a very calm and peaceful alpine lake with yet another gorgeous, snowy mountain backdrop. Times like that make me very glad I keep my winter wear so that I may enjoy these kinds of life's pleasures. Several pics in the spoiler.Mountains popping out of the coulds

Bow Lake
Calgary is the quietest big city I've ever been to (except for the terrible post-concert singing from the mister). It was very nice.
We are already tentatively planning another trip up there for next summer. The travel to/from was not simple. If we can find an easier way, we'll do that.
I think I gained a couple of pounds, even with the hiking. I blame the poutine.
Machka-Perhaps the dog wants attention. If you block the view with something solid, it may stop. Our neighbor's dog barks all day long if it's left alone. It will stop when someone comes home. It's very annoying for someone who works from home.
Heather-I love hearing about the grands. They have such wonderful personalities.
The last time I was away for a week, it took me more than a month to catch up with you all. So, I'm not trying this time.
Tonight, we see Sting in concert.
My next trip is in 10 days. I am not looking forward to that, except for sleeping in a room at a reasonable temperature.
Now, we are both focusing on better eating and getting back into an exercise routine.

Did a spinning workout today. After exercise walked around the neighborhood then went to Aldi. Home and made chocolate bran muffins and then tried my hand at an apple crisp. Honeycrisp apples were on sale. We shall see how it turns out.
This will be the first week of Newcomer bowling. Ceramics last night. Took a walk to the vet’s to get a prescription for Loki then stopped at the dollar store and got a calendar for Jess for Christmas. Still need to look for another one for her. I’d like to get one with wolves on it, she likes wolves (don’t ask me to explain that)
Pip – you wore your monkey feet out? I, sadly, believe it. Glad you got new ones
Joy – you and your husband built your house and “it had its challenging moments”? Do you know that the people who built our house got a divorce after 6 months?
Heather – so sorry that Johnny’s friend passed. It’s sad when the Christmas list gets shorter and shorter
Makeup: I wear just a little mascara if I’m going out in public. By that I mean going to work, etc. Otherwise, I usually don’t wear any. I’ll put a bit on tonight since we have bowling.
Debbie – I was 9 when my mother passed
Ginny – what adorable cats you have. They sure have their own personalities, don’t they?
Barbara – I, too, can’t imagine 45 years together. I also can’t imagine life without Vince.
Lehr – welcome!
Not real sunny today but I’m not sure I’ll have enough time to wash and wax my car before bowling so I’ll save that for another day. Vince has a train show to work at this weekend so maybe I’ll be able to do it then.
Bought more blocks for around the pool yesterday. Yesterday we were working on it. I’ve finished pulling the weeds, hauling the big stones, pushing back the rocks (just need to finish that part). Yesterday, Vince kept pointing out places where he kept saying “you need to fill it in with small stones”. Really, it looked pretty d*** good to me. I tell you, I really bit my tongue. How I wanted to say “why don’t you just go back to laying the stones”. Really, I’m thinking that his OCD is getting worse, if that’s possible. It sort-of bothers me that he doesn’t want to work on it today. I understand, he’s afraid with his back and bending over hurts him. But there's so much else that I think we need to get done before the cold weather sets in. See, I’d much rather work in the heat, Vince wants it cool. He doesn’t mind working in the cold – I do. But I know that I’ll just live with it, if it was me I’d probably do that exact same thing.
Needed to set up the appt for my Prolia shot. For the first time ever they told me that I had to have a BDT first. Never had that happen before. But they told me I was due for one so I’ll just go. Also made an appt for my mammo, only it’s in November.
Carol – so many times I’ve thought of Lenora! How’s she doing? Poor dear had so many health issues
Tried the apple crumble. Wasn’t bad, if I do say so myself. Now we shall see what happens over time. I do think that there should have been more sugar than the recipe called for
Rori – great to see you, as always. I wouldn’t say that you aren’t crafty – not at all. That StretchLab class sounds awesome. Wish we had something like that around here.
Kim – how could anyone even SUGGEST putting an animal down? The only time I can possibly see it is if the animal’s quality of life is poor.
Tina – awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing
Nothing special for tomorrow but soup kitchen on Friday

Lanette - I love the idea of the Dollar Tree/Blessing Boxes - There's a blessing box right around the corner from us where I've left things as assorted as paperbacks, canned goods, or various other small items. They always disappear.
Tina - Those photos are postcard-worthy and then some - I stole the picture of Bow Lake for the next time I can't resist doing a mountain painting - very well framed and absolutely beautiful.
Allie - So glad to see you taking care of yourself, staying away from family with the 'flu, etc. However comfy your recliner, though, don't forget to keep moving! Take Alfie out for that ten-minute walk, or just walk around your house... I'm letting my Fitbit push me into taking a few hundred steps each hour, so even though it can feel annoying, I know it's becoming a healthy habit. Start moving, woman, we want to see pictures of you at Miles' wedding someday! That beautiful boy deserves to have his grandma there... Love you, girl.
Rebecca - I'm sure you know I go through periods where I cannot bear the added stress of goals. You do what works for you, and you've always been quite good at that...
Budget stuff:I picked up about three 2.3 packages pounds of ground beef yesterday while the price for 80/20 is still $4.19 at Aldi's. That's already up 20 cents from September. I'll pack that up into nine meal-sized packages for us and get it in the freezer. A three-quarter pound package is enough for dinner for both of us and leftovers for one meal for one of us, usually Corey's or my lunch the following day. . That gets the freezer stocked up completely. I found chicken quarters at Walmart this weekend for 77 cents a pound, so I picked up a ten-pound bag of those, as well, which we separated and froze this weekend. The most expensive piece of any meal for us is meat.
With a well-stocked pantry and freezer, we're set for the late fall and winter - it's the slow time at work for Corey, so his hours drop back to 40 straight. Through the spring, summer and most of fall, he gets 10 hours of overtime each week, so his paychecks drop pretty dramatically in the winter. When you know it's coming, though, you can plan, and we've got enough in hand to keep us in pretty good shape through into the spring. Mostly, groceries for the next four to five will just be fresh fruits and veggies, eggs and cheese - we've actually both stopped eating bread, to the largest extent.
Off to the races, kids, chores to do.
Later,
Love,
Lisa

Today I attended the funeral of a 94 year old woman from our church. Married for 72 years, her 94 year old husband was beyond heartbroken. My floodgates opened ...

Lanette-there are what you call Blessing Boxes all around our town. There is one a few blocks from me that I have dropped off stuff at and there is one on the opposite corner from MIL's house.
After very little sleep night before last, I was very tired UNTIL time to go to sleep last night- finally got to sleep about 12:30, woke up a few times off and on. Got a total of 7 hrs of interrupted sleep.
Very warm today- in the 90's. Glad I didn't have a walk planned- have class tonight.
Went up to Vacaville to pick up a few things for MIL. Two weeks ago when we were going up there for her, she said she didn't need any dashi. This week she was mad that we hadn't picked any up for her so of couse, she mentioned it yesterday about being out so we had to go up today and get if for her.
I did pick up a few things for me to try cooking(she cooked it last week and it was really good)- it was lotus root, gobo root, kamaboko and pork in a soy mirin broth. I want to make it without the pork and add daikon and ginko nuts(picked up a pack of them to try- they were cheap and I have seen them often). May add edemame to it too(have them in the freezer.
