Good morning, ladies.
Heather, wonderful news that you were able to get your x-ray done. It is a start to getting an answer to your ongoing problem.
Annie, I would be looking at putting my books somewhere else in the house. Good job on the exercising.
I've been struggling with a callous on my foot for about the past 5 months and it is finally pain free. Side of little toe on one foot. Small spot but so painful. Nice to be able to walk properly again. This is the first callous I have ever had and I think it came about because I switched to very light bamboo fiber socks. Have gone back to cotton ones that are a bit thicker. Lesson learned.

Machka and Tracey there are six bookcases full of books, maybe four hundred books. And yes I want them all, at least until I can sort through them. I do read them. It was something I shared with my mother. They are down in the basement, out of the way. I put up a big sign on each bookcase, so hopefully that will remind him.
When I leave this house, I will have to choose a few. But for now, I can keep them.

Cilantro is AWESOME!!!!
LOL In class one afternoon, I made some comment about how Cilantro was the worst tasting thing ever, and the class was divided. Half of the class, or more, were ready to defend it to the end; the other half agreed with me. It's funny how it is a food that is either an all or nothing thing. You either love it or hate it. There's no, "it's okay."

CILANTRO lovers unite! I was raised in a very old fashioned traditional Hispanic household. It was always around and used alot. I love it fresh with a sandwich and a jalapeño pepper. People either love it or hate it. I was the only one that liked goats milk, it’s got a distinctive smell and taste, u either love it or hate it
Not a fan of goats milk BUT, while growing up and raising goats, we had to drink it. It was odd that I could tell which goat(we had 4 nannies) the milk came from. My goat had the mildest tasting. Her and her sisters were Togenbergs , our other two were Nubians- their milk was a lot stronger tasting(fit their personalities.
The last year we had goats, we ended up with 9 baby goats in the living room- one nanny died having a c-section with triplets(she was our best goat), the other three got mastitis so lots of bottle feeding. Mom got rid of the goats after that.
Cilantro I like it in certain foods, like salsa. Funny story, My DH makes a fried food topping for Christmas Eve Italian Fried Foods night. He calls it ‘a-leek’. It is awesome when made correctly. One year I grew cilantro and Italian parsley in my garden. I had grown a lot of both so dried them and ‘somehow’ the cilantro got mixed up with the parsley so the ‘a-leek’ was made with cilantro instead of parsley. LOL. We ate it anyway as the garlic tamed the cilantro but made the topping spicy-hot! To make this, (it’s great on baked fish and chicken, veggies, anything you want to add some zing to: use: olive oil (any type but EVO best), fresh garlic cloves, and parsley. That’s it. I can’t give any amounts as it is a ‘to taste’ recipe. If I were to guess, 1/2 cup olive oil, half a head of garlic peeled and smashed, and a handful of parsley, dry or fresh. Put in VERY tight container after shaking and store in fridge. The longer you wait before using, the better the flavor, but can be use within an hour of making.
I’m not a fan of goat’s milk or goat cheese. I just don’t like the taste. I do eat Feta, but needs to be in a salad with dressing on top!

Rebecca--Great pictures. Sending lots of hugs.
Heather--Great news on getting the referral and going to get the xray this morning. I pray you get the answers you need.
Kylia--Pray you are getting some much needed rest and feeling better.
I am really having a bad week and can not seem to stay on track. The visit to the heart doctor has me worried. I guess I figured it would be like most the time and nothing to worry about. But now I know it has to be taken care of. I have noticed my breathing is labored and that is because of the fulid, but taking the meds and spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Also I had one of my girls call in this last week and got a doctors note so I have covered her days this week and last and now she can not work her weekend shifts and everyone has plans so that means I will have to work.11 days straight is to much when they are 10-12 hours days. Sorry I have not been more active here. Guess feeling sorry for myself and have to get a handle on it.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE where they are saying snow the next couple days.8 -
Vicki that is an awful lot of hours for someone with heart trouble. Aren't you supposed to be resting? Hope you can find a substitute!

Went to my PC yesterday to go over bloodwork, etc. She was very happy with the improvement of my numbers over the last 3 months. That was when I changed my diet from low carb, high protein and fat to the Kidney diet. My A1C went down from 5.7 to 5.6, my kidney numbers all improved. My GFR was 42 last time, up to 59. This company checks 2 different GFR’s the other I have went from 50 up to 72. Both put me out of CKD! My cholesterol stayed at 128. So she was very happy with that. I am going to a physician that allows 30 minute visits. My DH usually goes first and is done in about 10 minutes. I stay and ask her all the questions I’ve written down for her, including stuff about my DH. This works great for us and I’m glad I found this doc when we moved here. They do referrals as needed, but we are short on doctors here so takes up to 3 months to get appointment with a specialist. X-rays and lab work depend on where you get them. So once you get a specialist, take every appointment they give you and stay on their books! Otherwise, if something changes, takes FOEVER it seems to get an appointment.
I have to stop the squats for at least a week until my back stop hurting. This was one thing I discussed yesterday. I have a bad habit of going full speed ahead whenever doing something like that challenge. I end up hurting myself by going too fast. I am not going to stop the squats, but have to stop the structured plan I was doing and go slower.

Today’s gratitude: alternatives to the Blinding Light “official video.” :sick:Why is it that the videos are so horrible? "Bad Habits" is the same. Yet both are favorite line dances. SMH.
Welcome @meltumale Mel in the Bay Area!
Rebecca, I think cilantro is at least partially genetic, like some folk (Lisa eg) find broccoli unbearably bitter. Funny thing is I don’t mind a little coriander (cilantro seed) in baking and Indian food but fresh cilantro?
Lisa thanks for the article. I find “…a small amount of activity goes a long way,” inspiring. Don’t have to do the impossibly perfect, just need to get up and do something Hoping all goes well with the stress test.
Debbie and Margaret I will be interested to hear your experience going into the local SocSec office to get an appointment. Back when we signed up, (pre-covid) you had to have an appointment to get in to the local office, and you got one by either calling the national or the local office IF you could find the phone number. . . ;{
Tina imho get the stove with the gas cooktop while you can. Ask your local repairman for a recommendation. Avoid big box stores and Sears Home Town. Good luck!
Thanks Ginny for checking in on Kylia.
Tracey, know you will “knock it out of the park” with your presentation tomorrow. If I had a choice, I’d always go first and get it over with… ;}
Heather Hooray for persistence and sheer bloody mindedness!!! I’m giddy with relief that you got an Xray today. How will you get the results? Can the Xray be shared with your son’s recommended physio’s clinic?
Lanette Is your direct care clinic a member of the Direct Primary Care Coalition? The only such clinic in Oregon is in Portland ;(
Annie wow, and I thought I had a lot of books (four, floor-to-ceiling cases, a couple of shelves are double deep. I do re-read some, want to keep some for reference, but could truly purge half if I really tried . . . but just contemplating it spikes my heart rate and not in a healthy way.
Beth could your DH’s surgeon find a way to give him “Dr.’s orders” to avoid such projects in future? My DH who loves me, often cannot “hear” me but will hear a respected male say exactly the same words. . .
Vicki eleven 10-12 hour workdays is way way too much. What will your company do when you totally collapse? Time for them to step up and get you a substitute, like Annie suggested. ((hugs)) ((hugs))

Rita great job on your health test numbers!
Annie in Delaware3 -
Lord help us, it is doctor, doctor, doctor day, isn't it? Well, at least we're all getting seen, or are about to.
Allie - So glad you're not offering to be live-in help for two. I'm sorry things still aren't good with Carmine.
Rita - SO glad to hear the CKD has been banished by diet. I'm so pleased for you, and I know it was wonderful to hear for you. You're becoming the poster girl for what healthy diets can actually accomplish.
I'm back from my nuclear stress test.
Organ recital, if you're interested in the process:Because of the A-fib, they used a chemical to put stress on my heart, as they can't track my heart rate well enough on a treadmill. With the A-fib, it zooms up and down - my resting heart rate showed at 72, which is pretty good, but the A-fib shows on monitor up as high as 120s or 140s for moments at a time. Monitors have a hard time with a heart that beats at different rates in the upper chambers and the bottom ones of the same heart.
So the process: First they pushed the nuclear tracer through an IV line, then I waited for 30 minutes, and they did a full scan of the heart with the nuclear tracer lighting things up. Took 11 minutes while the scanner moved around my body. Then to a different room where they put the EKG leads on me and took one EKG. Then they pushed the chemicals through the line and did the stress EKG, which was only two minutes. Just felt heavy and tired for a couple of minutes.
Then they pushed another tracer through the IV again, but while I was waiting on that one to get through the whole system and back around to my heart, I was able to go get my coffee out of the car (yay!). The timing was good, as the caffeine headache was just setting in. Then one more 11-minute scan, this time with EKG wires in place, and I was let go.
The next heart thing is a trans-esophageal echocardiogram (TEE), basically the same ultrasound they do for pregnant women, but there's an ultrasound wand threaded down my esophagus far enough to line it up with my heart, then bounced off of another on the outside of my body. Luckily, they're knocking me out for that one, Corey will have to take me and then be ready to take me home. That's next month.
Beth - One thing about Arkansas, there are no state vehicle inspections here. First state I've ever lived without them. You only have to show proof of insurance to register a vehicle. And the license plate stays with you, not the car. You sell the car, you take the plate with you. I'm with Barbara and with Rita - maybe your word in the doctor's ear can get advice your husband will actually follow? I can't even get Corey to GO to a doctor, so you're doing better than me on that one.
Regarding cilantro - Yeah, it's a big fat no for me, but as Barbra said, it's green and I'm philosophically and physically disgusted by almost everything that's green. I'm finally beginning to accept that raisins in cookies aren't actually unbearable, though, so anything can happen, I guess.
In fact, I'm making cowboy cookies this afternoon. I make a double batch and freeze them individually so Corey can pull them out and make them himself when he is in the mood for something. They're what Mama called "kitchen sink" cookies - as in everything but the kitchen sink goes in them. (Here's a link.)
One thing I do that really makes a huge difference is that, besides browning the butter, I also toast the pecans, toast the coconut and I toast the oats in the oven until just browned before I mix them into the cookie dough. Makes a crazy difference in how good these taste. I might even toast the flour this time, too. Every toasted item has simply improved the taste. I also add raisins and dried cranberries, and leave out the cinnamon. Oh, and I always leave myself enough time for all these things to cool down, as if you put all that warm stuff in the mix, it melts the chocolate chips, and while still tasty, is a little weird!
Anyway... I also told Corey I'd get dinner going, just spaghetti Bolognese tonight. It's a chilly, rainy afternoon here, and a comfort food dinner sounded good to both of us. I'll make a big batch and freeze most of it for another couple meals.
No more medical anything until Wednesday next week, back to the orthopod. I can use a break.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in damp and rainy Arkansas

We have exceptional medical care here and I recognize it and am grateful for it. I saw my primary care doctor on Monday and Jake saw her today. He has a lot of back pain and the chiropractor (the one he sees every two weeks) suggested that he talk to his doctor about possible surgical remedies. She said that Jake is not a candidate for surgery (he is 78 years old and has many heart and breathing problems) but she recommended home exercises and physical therapy. He was able to get an x ray in the same building immediately after seeing the doctor.
I got my tetanus (TDaP) shot yesterday at our regular pharmacy the same day I made the appointment. My arm is sore but nothing really troubling.
Annie has been pulling so hard on the leash that we got a gentle leader for her and things are much better. I walked Brandy and Sasha with gentle leaders most of their lives.
I gave away nearly all my books little by little over the last 30 years. I still have some but was amazed at how many books I could get at the library if I really wanted to read them again.

We've been making drinks mats. Edie, as usual hated her effort and has discarded it.
Mine is the naked lady to echo the Matisse in our bedroom. John's is the geometric T, and Bea's is the 4 T. (a pun). John did the main design for her. We are putting ours on our bedside tables. They are varnished. The colours are more vivid in real life. The girls also did Mother's Day cards. It's this Sunday here.
Expecting the parents to return any minute.

Went down signed in at 9 got business taken care of at 12:45. Long wait but I took a book, that helped with the wait.
Annie you are right I will not longer get mine but will get DH. The process does start from today and I will not lose any from his. So I don't know why it said on the internet you might lose out on some benefits. I only needed an official copy of marriage certificate. It is to prove you have been married 10 years and I needed a photo ID. It is so nice to have it done!!6 -
Annie - I get it we went from 6 bookshelves to 1 when we moved here. It was so hard to decide.
Vicki - I understand how you are responsible for covering shifts, but your health is important too. Trust me, I’ve been in your shoes and if you were to walk in with a doctor’s note they would figure out a way to deal.
I hope you get some relief soon, on all fronts.
Rita - Great news at the doc. I’ll try again with the message. The messaging system on here is a pain it seems.
I got 100% on the research paper and presentation. Now for the quiz tomorrow and I might have another 100% session complete.
Barbara - “My DH who loves me, often cannot “hear” me but will hear a respected male say exactly the same words. . . “ Amen sister. Amen.
Lisa - it’s amazing where they stick ultrasound these days. I would want to be knocked out too.
All of the baking competitions I watch the judges call people out for not roasting some ingredients, nuts is one. On a side note, I don’t know why I enjoy those shows so much, I don’t bake. 😂 I might, but I don’t eat it and DH doesn’t need it.
Speaking of ultrasounds, I started following the Queensland Brain Research Centre a few years ago. (It was a suggested ad, I assume from when Machka’s husband was first injured which is when I joined you ladies.) anyway, last week they announced that preliminary trials in very few humans has shown that ultrasound has reversed some dementia. I’m following it closely, what a breakthrough that would be.
Pip - Can’t wait to see the new trailer. Is this Bette 3?
So I did a thing today.
It’s been bugging me for quite a while, but I had debating the decision and doing nothing. Finally took the plunge.

Celebrating!
That my 4x shirts hang off of me now! I have a few old 3x shirts I used to wear that I pulled out of storage, and am using now. I also pulled out my old 2x shirts, and I can almost wear them! (They are still a little snug, but I'm almost there!)
Machka: Glad to hear your new glasses are working so well, even if there is a slight adjustment period needed.
Annie: Hang in there, you’ll have those drug names memorized before you know it. My mom did it back in the late 70’s/early 80’s as a QMA in a nursing home. You’ve got this! And big (((HUGS))) on the emotional eating episode.
Lisa: Prayers that everything comes back normal on your stress test. I have to have one next week, so I would love to hear about your experience with it. My heart ultrasound will be after the stress test. (Just seen your stress test update. Thanks for sharing. I too will have to use the chemical to put stress on my heart, as I have to use a cane or motorized scooter to get around. So no treadmill for me.)
Welcome Mel in California!
Rebecca: What sweet pictures and memories you have of your son’s now. I’m sure you’ll treasure them always.
Heather: That is just crazy about your health system. My GP has her appointments set up in 15 minute blocks, but has no problem going over that time if necessary. We are only allowed one issue per visit though. That is great news about the X-Ray!
Kylia: Sorry to hear you’re ill. Feel better soon.
Vicki: Eleven 10-12 hour workdays is unacceptable with your health condition. What if you collapse and are unable to work? I guarantee they would be able to find a replacement for you then. Please be careful.
Rita: What great test result numbers! Keep up the great work!
My Week So Far...
I had a one pound gain this week. It was three pounds earlier in the week, but I managed to get back down to 319.4 by this morning's weigh-in. The only thing I did differently was switch to almond milk instead of half & half in my coffee.
I guess my body has a problem with almonds, so I switched back to half & half. Now I'm almost down to my March starting weight of 318.4 again. That just goes to show how important it is to track the food you eat. Then you can look back and see if there is a particular food that doesn't agree with you.
April in Indiana6 -
Tracey: I like your hair cut! Have you done your presentation yet?
Kylia: I hope you are feeling better!
April: I hope the situation with your heart stabilizes.
Mtumale: Welcome
Florinda: Welcome!
Flea: I leave Cilantro out of any recipe that calls for it!
Debbie: Happy Birthday!
Rebecca: Your visit with your sons has lifted my heart!
Machka: Great going on the new lenses. I broke the arm on a frame and it can't be repaired, so I am wearing my old prescription right now. Need to get new frames ordered. This is on my to do list!
Heather: I was a little surprised you were able to get out to the shops. Great news that you got the xray!
Betsy: Sorry about the tax situation! I did the taxes last March after my husband passed and was owed a refund. I didn't trust myself so I got an extension and didn't think about it again until August. Then I decided to take it to a tax preparer...several hundred dollars later...he told me I had done the taxes right. I am using him again this year and then next year hope to do them with the software ....and trust myself this time!
Lisa: Your story about the mowing reminded me that I have a French Drain. Over the last few years dirt and grass have grown over this drain. I was caregiving so much I never even put it on my to do list...but now I need to get a shovel and clear the drain! I guess it goes from the drain on the street under my front lawn to a pipe in a drainage ditch in the back yard. Then about halfway along there is this grate that I am talking about that needs to be cleared.
I have been forgetting to take my statin! I hope that is not why I am feeling better! I love the sun in the mornings. I have been to 1 yoga and 2 exercise classes. I have been using MFP to look up food calories but keeping track of the calories on my manual diary. Somedays I am at 1200. Other days 1200 to 1400 a day...a day can be very long not to eat!
I have been eating some no sugar chobani yogurt and some breadless breakfast sandwiches. I am also purchasing some pre-seasoned Rosemary pork chops which bake in the oven well.
I have the air conditioner on and I am beginning to clean since my son and his wife are coming next week!
Of course they bring the 3 dogs...so I really should clean after they leave!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia

Kylia - so sorry you are sick. Hope that sore throat goes away fast. Missed you!
Vicki - your job is already so stressful. Is there someone else there who could cover those open spots?
Rita - super blood test results. Very well done on the GFR! Your physician sounds ideal - 30 minutes is just about right to cover everything including your DH. Great set-up.
Tracey - I'm sure you'll do fine on your presentation.
Barbara - When my docs started their Direct Care practice 10 years ago, (not any member of a coalition) they were tired of the 80% of time spent on paperwork for insurance too like Tracey's former doc, and their families were suffering as well as patient care. Because they no longer took insurance, they let go of nearly all their admin staff. Dr. Paul really stuck his neck out and I think things were tough initially because the main income was paying customers. Everyone is grateful it worked out well.
Lisa - I've heard of folks getting the "chemical stress test" - thanks for telling us how this works. If all goes as planned, do you think you'll be done with the medical stuff by the end of the year? I'm trying to remember your timeline if all goes well. Crossing fingers for ya.
Barbie- glad you and Jake have a good doctors, and hope the exercises help his back. We once had a Providence internist we really liked, he was from India, and just superb. Gave both DH and I as much time as we needed. We were heartbroken when he left to take a job "up north."
I just went out to the shop and got the mower started! It sputtered a couple times but on the third try it turned over. I drove it around in the driveway for a few minutes to get it warmed up. Last year I mowed here on March 5th.

Camping evolution:
Started out in tent
Then in the little shed, we converted it into kinda like a tiny home, it was already on that lot that we bought.
Then it was the Minnie Winnie, our first true camper.
Then the airstream-I think that was the first time we named one, that was the original Bette
Then, the meerkat (has blue on the bottom half) that was Bette 2.0
Then a bigger one (one with stripes). Bette 3.0
Then the one we have now, this one is stroked by the place where we camp (too big for garage anyway) Bette 4.0
Then the one that we will be getting and that will be Bette 5.0

(((Vicki))) I feel so sorry that you are having to take responsibility for your co-workers. As other have said, with your health problems that should absolutely be a NO!
Tracey ~ Love your shorter hair. It makes you look so much younger.
Heather ~ Glad you got an x-ray and hope you get some good news and help.
Books: I love my Kindle and know that the ones I get from Amazon will be there for me to reread whenever I desire to do so. I grew up constantly reading but quit for a long time when I was teaching. I have started enjoying reading again. There are a couple of hundred books in the basement from the family collection but it is a lot easier to read on my Kindle.
Kylia ~ Hope you feel better soon. The sore throat, headache, coughing seems to have been going around a lot. I finally wet to the dr and got antibiotics after having it for 3 weeks.
Going to a Japanese restaurant for grandson's 14th birthday this evening. He is growing up too fast!

April - In all honesty, that stress test was one of the least uncomfortable tests I've had of late. The only true discomfort was not having a cup of coffee first thing! In all honesty, I think they should just test you the way you actually are, which for me would be with a cup of coffee on board! 😈😀😸 Will be interested in your experience with the heart ultrasound.
Lanette - If there's a timeline for the heart stuff, I don't know it. I know my main cardiologist is out for some time in late spring with his daughter, who's coming home from college. My assumption would be July/August for the Watchman insert, which of course is Corey's busiest season. Not the foggiest clue about timing on the knee issues, and haven't heard back yet on approval from the VA for the Crohn's med, Stelara. My acupuncture is off the schedule for the time being until they get word from the VA. My doc said he was approving it, but the usual delays are in progress.
Tracey - I like the cut! I always love mine shorter, too. Last week, I dyed mine from dirty blonde to what was supposed to be a deep gray with purple undertones and it turned out the same color as the hair I was born with, deep brown. Corey likes it, I don't have to look at it, and Egg doesn't care, so... 🤷🏻♀️🐈⬛😀
You remember how to eat an elephant? Just taking it one bite at a time. 😀👀🙃 Not that I have much choice...
For whatever reason, I'm coping with all this better than I have in years past. When I can move, I do; when I'm hurting, I sit down, and take a pain pill if I must; when I'm hungry I eat; when I'm unhappy (seldom) I cry. I feel right now as if my family and friends are all wrapped around me like a big hug whenever I need it, like you ladies are.
Life is good.
So are y'all.
Allie - Let us know what the doc said. Hope it's all good.
Love y'all,

Kylia ... sorry you've got the crud...

Vicki ... you are not feeling sorry for yourself... you are rightfully recognizing your limitations! I worry about you ...
So I decided to spring clean the kitchen. Washed the cabinets, cleaned and polished the countertops and the small appliances on the counter top. Even got the stainless steel cleaner out.
