JULY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the JUNE 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10916562/june-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy

I'm in for 100 miles again. Honestly don't know if it's doable. I'm traveling to Japan for 16 days. My family vacations are BUSY! And we usually deal with crowds by getting an early start. I have a plan for the days I am home and I'll just have to see what I can do on my trip. I really enjoy exploring places on foot. I feel like I get a different feel for a place during a run so I think I'll run some but who knows exactly how much.10

Due a day off soon... And have a boozy long weekend in Berlin in a few days' time... So will probably miss 2-3 days this month.
I'm gonna go for a conservative 27 running days.
27 * 9kms = 155Miles (rounded up to the nearest 5)

Hello July.@tarun_yadavA And have a boozy long weekend
I am in for 50 miles this month.
I am running a 5K race with P next Saturday.
6 -
24.06 2.1km 18min 8:48/km - slow
26.06 2.5km 21min 8:19/km - slow
28.06 3.1km 26min 8:30/km - slow
30.06 4.0km 35min 8:44/km - run/walk
total 11.62km
Today the weather was totally shite. It rained all day, then stopped briefly when I went out for my run. When I was nearly finished it started to pour. Like bone soaked within seconds poured. I didn't look at where I was running (it was on a big graveyard) and when I was done I had no idea where I was as I apparently ran past my usual route. All wet, fingers, phone, clothes. Took a while to figure out where I was, then walked home, showered and let my phone dry. So yeah. That was my day today 😅7 -
☣️⚠️. WARNING BEWARE ⚠️☣️
I am returning to running (and this forum) this month. So be prepared for a lot of whining about how hard and how hot it is 😉
But I am looking forward to hearing about all of you amazing runners and your great accomplishments.
I haven't gone back the 2 months that I have been gone to read all of the posts, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance regarding all of your updates.
I think I will start very slow and build up gradually, so shooting for a low mileage month of maybe 80 miles.
Have fun and be careful out there! 🥵12 -

@Scott6255 welcome back! 🥳4 -
@scott6255 Yay! You’re back!
I’m starting my marathon training soon, which basically doesn’t differ much from current training other than that it’s (hopefully) higher mileage. I just don’t know that I can make that higher mileage happen, because like @martaindale I will be on vacation soon and 2 of 3 kids are currently on summer vacation. We are going to the south of France and it will be hot, so I will have to aim for early runs where I have some shade, or runs where I can jump in the Mediterranean at the end . We’ll see. I aim to try to make it happen and get another 200km minimum month in.6 -
My goal for July is to log close to 200km and get my V02 max back into the 50s. I also want a new 5k PB at parkrun, ideally under 26 minutes.
I’m starting with a cutback week, but next Sunday will be a 12k, then up in 2k increments every Sunday for the month again.
I too could be thwarted by school holidays but at least I will be able to run in the afternoon once we’re back in wintery New Zealand.
And welcome back @Scott6255!10 -
Enjoy your trip to Japan @martaindale !
Have fun with your race next week @emptydog .
@yirara Sounds like an interesting run. I'm glad you were able to figure out where you were and get home safely AND get your phone dried out.
So glad you are rejoining us @scott6255! We've missed you.
Have fun on your vacation too @Laurz9191 ! Jumping in the Mediterranean to cool off sounds like fun.

I have a busy month and, am also going to go on vacation for a week. I'm going to FL for my late husband's wife's family reunion. I'm going to try for an average of 2 miles a day and hope that is manageable and maybe even beatable. So, I'll say 60 miles for my goal of fast walking and running. I was hoping to run more, since I'll be doing a 10K (not race) at the beginning of August, but don't see how I can make that happen. My birthday 10K may be mostly a walk.7
-
I'm in for 130 miles for July.
Thanks for setting us up @AlphaHowls !
Glad to see you back @Scott6255!4 -
I’m in for 100 miles!
First time joining and may be more walking than running when I first start. But it all begins with the 1st step:)9 -
Hey newbies!

Last month was last month. No regrets, it's history(Like Groundhogs Day!) Wipe the slate clean, make a July goal, and start off this month strong. I hope to see you around.
Welcome @khauck1994, in for 100. Strong!
4 -
Woops, I accidentally ended up in the July thread. Didn't look properly. Anyway, starting July tonight.4
-
Morning all
Got in 6.24M (at 09"39).
Seems like July is the holiday month for everyone!
@Teresa502 cruising away in the Caribbean; @ContraryMaryMary hopping international date lines!
@quilteryoyo FL , @Laurz9191 going all bouggee in the South of France... @martaindale going full Pokémon in Japan... And yours truly gonna be drinking his body weight in steins of whitbiers and Hefes out in Germany. lol
Look forward to all the 'Run see' pics ... And of course, food p0rn7 -
Thanks for all the welcome backs! Feels like being welcomed homed by family after a long trip away ❤
Mother nature was not so welcoming...84F feels like 90 with no breeze. Only did 4 miles to start out, and they were really tough. But glad to be back!

Hi everyone!
I had 8x 400 meter repeats, plus 30 min warm up and 30 min cool down. It went splendidly well and I hit all my splits. I could say I’m getting fitter, but honestly it all had to do with the weather reverting back to fall temperatures (goodbye heat acclimation). It was fun though and nice not to overheat for a change. We are having weird weather all week, so I want to get as many long runs in when it’s pleasant to do so. I ran 15.1km.
15.1/200km for July.7 -
Way to hit your splits @Laurz9191! Can you send some of that fall weather to Texas please?!5
-
I ran at the lake this morning and was surprised at how few people were there. Just one of the regulars was there as well.
7/1 - 3.16 Miles. 56F, Cloudy.9 -
Now I'm checking in properly for this month. Got everything today in 25 mins: strong wind, rain and sunshine. Only needed some snow.
01.07 3.0km 25min 8:20/km - 10x very short interval
total 03.02km
6 -
Starting back today (July 1st) with a goal of 83 miles at the end of the month in honor of my grandfather who passed away due to COPD. I will breathe the air he couldn't. Cheers, friends.9
-
Hello! My goal for July is to pass 100 km, run one 10km, and run minimum 5 days per week. I've done today's 5km run and with a pace of 6:38 min per km. June I ran 22/30 days, which is a huge improvement from May's total of 9 runs and prior to that, one run per week for the previous three months. So I'm already very happy with how June went, looking forward to meeting more goals in July! Thanks for having me!8
-
@ThatCookieGurl I'm sorry for the loss of your grandfather.0
-
Welcome @khauck1994 . You're right. It all starts with one step. Feel free to join in on any conversations. This is a very supportive group, regardless of your running/walking level. 100 miles is a lofty goal if you haven't been doing a lot of running/walking. Just be sure to not go out to hard and get injured.
Great running @tarun_yadavA . You are so funny. I'll have to try to remember the food porn. Not sure I'll be doing any "run see" adventures since I'm visiting family, but who knows.
Four miles in the heat is so tough @Scott6255 . Great start for the month.
Great run @Laurz9191 . Glad you had such nice running weather.
Great run @emptydog . I'm sure running by the lake is fun. Sounds like you about had it all to yourself, which is especially nice.
Great running @yirara . That kind of weather happens around here sometimes too. Crazy.
Welcome @ThatCookieGurl . So sorry for your loss.
Great running @jem302 . You did great in June. You've got this.

1 July - Walked 2.00 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - driveway wun - trimmed trees for 2h52m44s
2.00/60.00 goal
It was a really nice day today, especially compared to the last week. The high was only 82F (27.8C) with low humidty - like 39% low. So, mom and I decided to push to finish trimming the trees on the driveway. We started about 9:30 and my neighbor unexpectedly showed up to help about an hour later. We got it all done at 2:30.
Pictures under the spoiler.
We're celebrating!!! This is actually from the local 4th of July celebration Saturday.
All the limbs we cut this year. They don't show up well, but all behind mom and to in front of the gator.
From behind the pile, so you can see the older limbs and the depth of the pile. If you look closely, you can see mom sitting on the Gator on the other side.
When we got done, I did a 2 mile driveway wun. I was short on time and energy, but managed 2 miles.
Then, we took the neighbor to a local Mexican restaurant to appreciate and celebrate getting that job done! Sorry @tarun_yadavA . I don't have any food porn.6 -
Thanks for setting us up again @AlphaHowls!!
I am going to say I am in for 50miles since I got so close in June. Not sure how much, if any I will be able to run but I will get out there and walk if not. We will also be way for a few days but just to the beach here. There are lots of trails along the cliffs around the hotel so I will getting some good walks in there.
Welcome to all the newbies. This is a great group - feel free to jump in to any discussion or ask questions. There are lots of experienced runners who will weigh in with advice.
Welcome back @Scott6255 - we've missed you! Honestly can't believe you you decided to return to running at the start of the really hot and humid weather. I am sure once you get back into it you will do great though. You know you are free to whine all you want!
@chris_in_cal - commenting on your post in June... You know it is hot in California when San Diego is 'smoking hot'! I don't know about San Diego but we are under an extreme heat advisory through the weekend and likely into next week - yikes!
I can't wait to see all the pictures from everyone's vacation spots. I have to say @ContraryMaryMary's picture looking out at the beach and beautiful water (was that here or on Strava?) is my favorite so far.8 -
July Goal: 130 Miles
7/1: 4.02 miles
4.02/130 miles completed for July
I started July off with 4 miles. It started out at 81°F feels like 84° and ended up at 79°F feels like 79°. I actually noticed that it was cooler while I was running. It was an uneventful run, but nice. We got up to 102°F today. It is supposed to hit 106°F tomorrow. Hopefully it won't get that hot.

@chris_in_cal you got this! You've already hit the 5K distance a couple of times during the streak, as noted on Strava.
So your mind and body "knows" 5K is not an issue.
Just go hell-for-leather on race day. Limber up beforehand. I'm sure you'll get a PR with speed starting with the number 10"--7 -

I wonder if the number of newbies saying Hi 👋🏽 is correlated to Feeds being shut down? People missing the fitness related social interactions?!
Can't remember so many new people saying Hi at the start of the month in one go.
Well hello and welcome from me! 😐8
