OCTOBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge

@WarmJellyfish – I helped time a race a couple of weeks ago that included a 12K ruck. I think most participants had 20 pound vests but I don’t believe any had 35 pounds. That’s about how much my fully loaded backpack weighs when I go hiking for a couple of days. Hiking not running!
Yea my usual summer backpack load for a weekend in alpine terrain these days is 16lbs, give or take. I'm like on a day hike, backpacking.
The 12mile/35lb (minimum, usually more) specs comes from the US army's infantry qualification standards. I'm trying to re-live my younger days.. except nowadays I have a lot more aches and pains and legs ain't what they used to be but I can try!

@quilteryoyo good workouts!
@kgirlhart congrats on the 9 year streak!
@tarun_yadavA nice run!
@AmunahSki have to "love" Garmin plans some days.
@Mari33a I feel you. On those days, I sometimes back off and cut the mileage down. Live to fight another day. Overall my weekly/monthly mileage does go up.
8 -
02.10 5.0km 39min 7:44/km - 3x3min, 5x0.5min intervals
04.10 4.0km 31min 7:50/km - slow
06.10 3.0km 24min 7:59/km - slow
08.10 3.1km 23min 7:34/km - 9x short sprints
15.11km
I seem to be in this situation again where my muscles surprisingly work and allow me to run somewhat faster, yet my stamina is not good enough. Short run in the rain.8 -
Hi everyone!
I was aiming for a 16km today but, as I don’t really know how far the distances around here are, and there are many nature preserve areas you can’t go on, so I underestimated my route a bit. It was just getting prettier and prettier and I wanted to check it all out . The run back was a bit harder because it was on harder beach sand (which still has some give) and into the wind. I ran 18.2km.
This vacation is a bit special because I don’t have to take care of the kids in the mornings and am given time and even encouraged to decompress and do my own thing (= time for running!). Sometimes I am supposed to do other group things - like the Nordic Walking or bike tour - but I’m finding it nice to switch things up a bit, and I currently don’t have a race I’m preparing for. I can just do whatever running I feel like.
46.2/160km for October.6 -
Oct 1 – 4.46 miles
Oct 4 – 3.10 miles
Oct 6 – 9.08 miles
Oct 8 – 5.11 miles
Oct 9 – 4.08 miles
Total 25.83 miles/Goal 80 miles
This morning we headed to the local middle school track for intervals. One of our non-running friends joined us to walk and unfortunately, I did more walking and talking on the recoveries than necessary but we all had a good time anyway.
You should be proud of logging into mfp for 9 years @kgirlhart! Your weight loss and dedication to running are very motivating.
Thanks for your thoughts on the Hurricane Helene devastation @AmunahSki. It is hard seeing it firsthand and hearing all the stories of survival and destruction and loss. On the other hand, the stories of strangers helping strangers is heartwarming.
You have been working hard on your diet and biking and running @Mari33a. No wonder you are tired!
I’m sure you will do wonderful on your ruck @Warmjellyfish!
Glad you are getting some “me” time @Laurz9191!
5 -
@yirara I hope your muscles hold out long enough for you to get your stamina back too. You do great to do what you can!
@Laurz9191 Sounds like you are having a great vacation and getting some much needed "me time." That run sounds wonderful - with it getting prettier and prettier as you went. I thought the kids were with you? Is this a "solo" vacation?
@Teresa502 Sometimes, walking and talking and catching up with friends is more important than speed.4 -

I went to the gym this morning. Mostly arms and upper body strength training today.
Later, I went out for a driveway run. I pushed the pace a little and was pleased with my splits: 12:58, 12:37, and 11:13 min/mile. Avg HR was 137 with a max of 156 bpm.
This afternoon, I mowed my lawn - some push mowing, some with the self-propelled DR, and some leaf blowing. I traversed 2.34 miles doing this.6 -

Thanks @quilteryoyo, @warmjellyfish, @Teresa502
Today's run was a 40 minute tempo run. I ran the warm up and cool down faster than the plan suggested, but I hit all of the other paces. I ended up with 4 miles in 44 minutes and I felt good about it.

Morning all
Got in 3.51 miles at 09"21 pace.
In the office today. Then colleague leaving drinks... Then meeting S-i-L and wife for dinner (at late-ish) 8.45 pm booking. Some Vegan chef won the Great British Menu reality TV show about 6m ago... Got his own restaurant... So this is the first booking available. Thursday at 8.45 from several months ago (discounting Mon-Wed as 'too early in the week').
Should be... interesting!
Enjoy kid free break @Laurz91916 -
Happy 9th MFP anniversary @kgirlhart! That is some dedication.
Went out for an easy 7 mile run this morning. Again started nice and slow, but after a mile or so I defaulted to my tempo pace. I really need to figure out how to do a complete easy run. Left upper calf starting to hurt...just in time for my race.

I met 3 friends this morning for 5 miles. Another cool morning with the temp at 45F. I actually broke out a long sleeved shirt for today’s run!
@tarun_yadavA – Enjoy your fun filled evening!
@Scott6255 – Time for a rest day? Is your race Saturday or Sunday?
Good job pushing the pace @quilteryoyo! I tried to do that on my last mile this morning but mile 2 ended up being my fastest mile.
4 -
That's a great pace @kgirlhart .
@tarun_yadavA Sounds like you should have run longer to pre-burn some of those calories. Enjoy your evening and I'm looking forward to hearing about the vegan dinner.
Great job on the 7 miles @Scott6255 . I'm sorry your calf is starting to hurt. I hope it feels better tomorrow and you are able to run the race. Have you decided to run it as you or your brother yet?
Thanks @Teresa502 . Sounds like a nice run. I broke out long sleeves yesterday. For some reason, I was cold all day, except for the times I was sweating from the run and mowing.2 -
@kgirlhart Congrats on 9 years! Impressive!
@Scott6255 It’s so easy to slip into autopilot on a run. I found it hard to slow down for a while but these days I enjoy a truly easy run. Sorry your calf is tweaked. Bad timing.3 -
Oct total: 21.1/125 miles
YTD: 795.8/1200 miles
10/5: 6 miles
10/6: 4.1 miles
10/7: 5 miles
10/10: 6 miles
Another bust of a workout. Today was supposed to be 12 x 400 m repeats. I managed to hit the target pace on three repeats, by the fourth I was falling off the pace. The fifth was marginally, faster, but a struggle, feeling more like what I would expect the last one or two repeats to feel like, not the fifth. I had to walk a portion of the recovery following that one and that was when I knew I needed to let this work out go. I ran a couple more miles at an easy pace just to get some additional time on feet, but I knew I didn’t have it in me to push the pace.
This one has me concerned about the potential of what my fitness can do in this training cycle. The weather was beautiful, I was running along a dam so it’s totally flat, and I was able to run in the morning. I even had a rest day yesterday. There’s no good reason that it should’ve been this much of a bomb. I just didn’t have the energy or the ability to complete it and that has me worried. I know it’s too early in the training cycle to completely give up on it, but I’ve never struggled this much. I’ve had workouts not go great in the early weeks, but I’ve never had to bail on 2 in a row.
Idk guys. I still have endurance. Distance isn’t the issue but I can’t hang with speed workouts. I was so close to a sub 2hr half and now I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do it.6 -
@sarahmartaindale Sorry you are struggling with the speed workouts right now but give yourself some grace. If you are feeling low on energy, your body could be diverting its energy to fighting off a cold or something else. Maybe it was just a crappy run day. We all have those. Don't give up on your goal!4
-
Oh @martaindale sorry your training cycle isn't coming together as you would like. Maybe it is accumulated stress from previous hard workouts. Or a change in diet? Really could be many things.
Thanks for the hugs y'all. I'm sure I'll be fine. I have been feeling the calf tightening slightly over the past few weeks, but have tried to ignore it. So will baby it for a few days and see what it feels like next week. Race is 10/19. Depending on how I feel, I will either run with my niece at her pace, or try to race at my goal pace. I think I am going to try to wear both my number on the front, and my brother's number on my back. Might get called out for it, but worth a try I guess.7 -
So far, 57 of 175km for the month.
Yesterday was one of those days, where I to drag myself out, did a 7k. Oh and a bum knee had something to do with it. Feeling draggy, how did I do an ultra 3 weeks before? Then I remembered the motivational line the universe sent me before the ultra. The ups and and downs of running as usual.
Just Do Your Best.
@quilteryoyo that's a big yard you have.....4 -

Can be done if you're that close. Get a good taper in. Rest and recovery are the bywords here.1 -
@martaindale Im sorry your training runs haven't been going as good as you planned but don’t loose heart. We know from all your past running you definitely have it in you!4

Morning all
Shoe p0rn!
585 miles later... Switching ASICS Gel-Kayano 30s for... Exactly the same thing!
@martaindale sorry you're struggling a little 😞
@Teresa502 @quilteryoyo thank you! It was a really nice night! Got there 3 beers in. Colleague, Hollie was leaving so went for her leaving drinks. Then met up with wife and S-i-L at the restaurant. So as mentioned this dude, Kirk Haworth won this Great British menu thing. And I gotta say - at least two dishes were amazing!
But the dessert... OMG.

Pics probably don't do it justice... But it was heavenly!
And an excuse to wear a collared shirt out and spray some cologne... On a school night!5 -

Got in 4.52M at 10"25. Took it easy today.6 -
Nice shoes and food pics @tarun_yadavA! Also love the pic of you and wifey! Lovely!2

Yeah, I have a problem! My muscles work quite well and I'm at the same time very restless, while my stamina is not used to this pace. This was supposed to be a slow run, and I ran faster than anytime in the past few years. 🙈4 -

My watch suggested a rest day today, which surprised me since I had a rest day 2 days ago. Apparently my HRV is low and it also thinks I need more sleep even though I'm getting around 8 hrs a night. I decided to do my planned run. I tried to keep my HR under control, walking the steepest hills on the back half.
I'm in the hill country this week and have yard work to do, so doing it in little bursts and trying to rest in between. I have a weed dragon, which is basically a flame thrower. I took care of the weeds, bit of an arm workout and much faster than picking by hand.5 -
@martaindale I agree with others. I'm so sorry that you are struggling with your speed workouts, but don't give up on your goal. Try to figure out if something else has changed - diet, sleep, hydration, etc. Hang in there! Don't be too hard on yourself. Glad it sounds like today's run was a bit better. You are probably get plenty of exercise . That weed dragon sounds like a lot more fun that pulling the weeds.
@Scott6255 I hope giving your calf a little babying is all it needs. Last time, didn't you do more TM runs? Maybe talk to the race director about wearing your brother's number too, unless you would rather just do it and apologize later if called out. Sometimes that's the easiest. How is your brother's recovery going? I hope the pain has subsided.
@WarmJellyfish Perhaps the reason for the tough run is because you did the ultra 3 weeks ago! Give yourself time to recover. My yard isn't real big, but I do mow a couple of rounds along the driveway, which is a quarter mile long, and a couple of areas along the way. This week, I also did part of the hill by my shop which doesn't get it often, and included leaf blowing. It does take quiet a bit of time and effort and makes for a good calorie burn.
Great run @tarun_yadavA . Watching him make that dessert is amazing and it looks soooo delicious. I wish you could send a taste through the internet. So, "leaving drinks" is like a going away party here. It sounded like your co-worker was leaving drinks at the office for everyone. You and your wife look great! Nice shoe porn. I got my new shoes today, but they are still in the box. Shoe porn tomorrow, maybe.
@yirara I figure faster is better than slower. Great run.

I didn't post yesterday. I worked at the daycare until 3:30 and did my planned drill workout when I got home. I cut it short, because I only had about 1.5 hours before I needed to leave for tennis.
Today, I worked at daycare this morning. When I got home, I went to mom's to mow her lawn. I did the riding and push mowing today. She was at the neighbor's, helping her peel apples to make applesauce. The neighbor is a vegan, so uses a lot of applesauce (plus she has 3 kids). I think between yesterday and today, she made like 78 quarts!
When we finished that, I did a short driveway wun. It actually felt pretty good, but I wanted to eat and get a shower before it got too late.5 -

The plan for today was a half marathon pace run. I am hoping to finish in 2:05, so I set my pace for 9:30. I ended up running 6.23 miles in 58:29 minutes and my pace was 9:23. I felt really good and strong. It was a nice morning. I saw a possum. I am a little sore this evening, but not too bad. Hopefully I will be able to keep that pace up for 13 miles.
