I'm trying to get in as good a shape as possible at 70! I'm hoping the app will help me in this goal. I'm curious about how many people have moved to premium, and if it helps even more with getting in shape. Thanks to all!

Hello, and welcome!
I think the app can help you with your goals . . . it certainly helped me. I'm 69 now, but lost weight with MFP at 59-60. I was already active while obese, but MFP helped me fuel fitness progress while losing weight, not just by making sure I didn't lowball calories, but also by helping me to get overall good nutrition at lower calories.
I have premium, and like it, but generally advise people to start with free MFP so they can learn the basics of use, which are identical between premium and free MFP. After that foundation experience is in place, it becomes much easier to evaluate whether the added features in premium are worth the cost, or not. That decision will be somewhat individual, depending on one's goals and needs.
The only exceptions to that I can think of would be people for whom the ads in free MFP are a major problem (such as if their internet connection is very slow); those who stick with something better if they pay for it; or those who feel they need a specific feature they know is only in premium MFP (such as net carbs, fast timing, etc.) Even then, it might be worth asking if others find those specific features worth it, since I do see criticisms of how those are implemented. 🤷 I'm happy with premium, but lost weight fine with free MFP and used it well into maintenance before getting premium.
For me, getting involved in reading/posting here in the Community has been a great help, too. Each topic section of the Community has a "Most Helpful Posts" subtopic, a.k.a. the stickies. Those are posts regular users have found so helpful that they've asked for them to stick around for reference long term, rather than slipping off into the mists of history. There's some real gold in there, IMO, so I'd suggest taking a look at chipping away at reading ones that look interesting, as you have time. If you have questions or are experiencing obstacles, don't be afraid to post questions in the relevant topic area yourself. Most people here want to be helpful.

I did the free trial and didn't see anything that I would use so I let the trial expire without renewing. Free gives me everything I need. But I also don't get out of my house much and can't exercise in such a meaningful way that it will impact the way I can eat. I would suggest doing the trial and seeing if it works for you.
