    I never said I was anti-vaccine.

I do believe I started out the discussion stating that I'm not getting the flu vaccination because I don't feel it is necessary for the average American Joe who is healthy to get it. I believe I also said that people with compromised immune systems, children and the elderly should get it.

Then the discussion got blown up and spewed as me being anti-vaccination because i don't think that Big Pharma and the FDA have the populations greater interests at heart.

Please do show me where I said I am anti vaccine as I believe I never used those words.:flowerforyou:

I can see why a lot of people are for it, and it is a wonderful invention, for the people it works for.
But my family, me, my mother, her grandmother. Any time any of us got a flu shot. We got the flu. And when we didn't? We didn't get as sick. We still got the flu, but we weren't down-and-out like we were after the flu-shots. And the flu never lasted as long, generally a day or two with fever, and done. After flu shots, the flu would last about a week before breaking.

Now, please don't get me wrong, Vaccines are amazing things, but again, they don't work for everyone.

You're right, they don't work for everyone. You can blame the reason your family got the flu on other folks you were around that DIDN'T get vaccinated. This is why it's so important that EVERYONE get vaccinated.
Guess what; if all 580 million people in north america got a predicted flu cocktail, people would still get sick BECAUSE THE COCKTAIL IS A GUESS.

Last year they had 135 million doses available, at a cheap rate of $15 each, that's over $2 billion for big pharma - just on flu shots. Wonder how much of that the Drs got for pushing it on the weak? Makes me sick thinking about it; maybe there's a shot for that too.

I really think you're missing the point. No one is arguing that pharmaceutical companies don't make money off of it.
Actually I think you are. My point is, if there was no money to be made (people would stop taking the flu shot), they wouldn't produce it no matter how effective it was. Or to simplify even further- they only do it for the money. They don't care about your health.

As I said earlier in the thread, I am really smart and read a lot.

Plus I've discussed vaccines ad nauseum so pretty much everything that has been said in this thread I've gone through a half dozen times already.

Too bad most of the anti-vaccine people have left the discussion. Not that they were willing to change their mind.

It's fine. They are only fun to point and laugh at anyway.

hey that was rude and hurt my feelings.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

I really enjoyed your Google gif!!!

I clearly stated, that we were sicker AFTER getting the shots. Without the shot, we were sick two days tops, with it, we were sick a week or longer.
And for the record, I haven't had the flu in four years. No vaccines. No flus. And yes, I've been around a LOT of people the past few years. In/out of school, and more recently, I've been spending a LOT of time in hospitals, with a LOT of sick people.

What a hate-filled thread this is.

If people don't want to get vaccinated then why should you care? If your vaccines work so well then their medical condition shouldn't affect you.

In other words live and let live. Stop being so hateful and calling people names just because their choices are not your choices.

Everyone who insulted those who chose to not vaccinate is completely guilty of bigoted hate. Go examine your hearts, folks. You're the worst kind of people out there for thinking that you should be able to force others to get medical treatment that they don't agree with. Whatever happened to 'getting along'?

You would do well to read the last few pages of the thread. People get vaccinated for the benefit of themselves and everyone they interact with. I have never gotten the flu EVER, but I do it for the sake of my kid, my husband, my parents, and everyone that I work with.

Only time I have been so ill I couldnt get out of bed for 5 days is when I didnt have the flu shot. After a stint in Africa and receiving every single vaccine known to man at that time I've continued the tradition, and have enjoyed relatively sick free years.

If my kid had cancer or an allergy to what is put into most vaccines (commonly egg) and could not get said vaccine, I most definitely would care. I care when I take my child to well-baby checkups to be surrounded with kids that are sick with potentially the same illness they could have been vaccinated to avoid, but weren't... Because I would rather NOT see my otherwise healthy 6 month old contract pertussis because someone thinks they know better than the general medical establishment.

Flu vaccines are developed each year based on the viruses that are circulating primarily in China in aquatic birds and pigs. This is why we call them "avian" or "swine" flus. The WHO monitor pig farms and bird markets around the world to see what strains are most prevelant, and also which of those strains have the most potential to cause a major pandemic if they did get to the human population.

The flu pandemic of 1918 (The Spanish Flu) killed more people than WWI (http://virus.stanford.edu/uda/). A similar virus will emerge again - it's just a matter of time.

This version of the flu was different in that many of the people who died were otherwise healthy, young adults. Not infants or elderly. This is explained by the cytokine storm (http://www.cytokinestorm.com/) induced by this strain.

    Get your shots, people!

My apologies (seriously, no sarcasm implied) for assuming you were anti-vaccine.

    Here's a story though:
A four-year-old boy with juvenile leukemia is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. He cannot receive the flu vaccine or any other vaccine for that matter because the radiation and chemotherapy would zap it anyway. He and his parents have to trust that every individual within breathing distance of him is either 1)Not carrying the flu virus or 2)Has been vaccinated.

I didn't have to prove I had vaccines when going to college... I didn't even have to the Hep vaccine(s) before living in a dorm... here in Texas you can fill out and have noterized an affidavit stating that your child has not recieved such and such vaccine(s)... based on either religious or philosophical reasons.
My daughter didn't have to show anything at all about vaccines to get into college here. I don't know if it's a state thing or things have just changed. I went to college a while ago. I won't say how long, but I have a daughterin college, so ... lol

You know, I actually prefer it that Big Pharm and such are financially motivated. If they were doing what they do for the "good of the people" only, I would find that terrifying. People do really scary things when they feel that it is for the greater good.

I don't get along with those who put me or my future children at risk by refusing to vaccinate themselves/their kids from preventable diseases. It's selfish and foolish and deadly.

You know this is curious to me is it possible that there could be enough recognition in the B cells that even a slightly mutated virus would still trigger an immune response? If that is the case then because of the push for more vaccination against H1N1 and the current flu strains there may not be any more of these big epidemics that killed so many people. Of course this is dependent on people getting vaccinated every year.

Um, I don't remember calling anyone names or insulting them. I was the one that called someone anti-vaccine, but she corrected me, and I apologized. As for everyone else, I think we've been polite and civil in expressing our opinions.

ETA: Sigh, and long story short, not everyone is ABLE to get the vaccine, so they depend on others around them to get it in order to protect them. See my boy with leukemia example earlier.

You know the worst thing about the Spanish flu of 1918? It led to Edward Cullen, which led to me having to sit through the first two Twilight movies TWICE and then led to 50 Shades of Grey.

That is the real tragedy. I'm going to get my flu shot now.
