Is the post-pregnancy body the new weapon of choice among super-fit women? Yes, charge critics of Norwegian soccer wife and fitness blogger Caroline Berg Eriksen, who posted a flat-stomach, bra-and-panties selfie to her 245,000 Instagram followers just four days after giving birth.

"This is not a selfie. This is an act of war," writes one Australian blogger in response to the image — just one of many blogs, news outlets, body-image experts and social-media commenters around the world to weigh in on the matter in the past few days, putting the photo at the center of a major online body-image controversy. "This whole situation has become ludicrous. The competition for women to give birth and then immediately remove any trace from their their bodies that they ever carried a child is OBSCENE. There is no other word for it." Another blogger calls the photo of Eriksen, who is married to pro soccer player Lars-Kristian Eriksen, "wildly provocative."
Eriksen posted the photo of herself on Instagram, along with the caption, "I feel so empty…4 days after birth," igniting the online backlash. Twitter users call Eriksen and her washboard-abs "intimidating," "unhelpful," "obviously a freak," and "unfair to all women."

Australian Telegraph writer Sarrah Le Marquand offers a mixed review of the situation, tweeting that yes, Eriksen is a "shameless exhibitionist," but warning in her column, "Slamming the super-fit and genetically freakish likes of Berg Eriksen is merely another form of judgment - and mothers are forced to contend with far too much of that already."
On Instagram itself, the controversial photo has been "liked" more than 21,000 times, and comments have been overwhelmingly positive. There, supporters note, "U rock girl! I have three kids and I'm a blimp," "Body envy is an ugly thing," "I applaud you," and "Beautiful!"
It's all just the latest online blowup in the ongoing discussion about pregnancy and body image. Mother and fitness blogger Maria Kang polarized Facebook readers twice recently-first for posting a hyper-fit photo of herself and asking, "What's your excuse?" and then for criticizing plus-size women for posing proudly in their lingerie. Australian mom-to-be Loni Jane Anthony recently spoke out about her raw vegan diet, prompting critics to publicly ponder whether her lifestyle was harming her baby.
The scrutinizing narrative about celebrities and other women's post-baby bodies, meanwhile, is ongoing, with new moms from Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi to Kate Middleton getting caught in the fray.

Totally jealous! Genetics accounts for a lot. She definitely doesn't look like she has a four day old.0
-
People are annoying. Why can't we be impressed and admiring without the hatred and jealousy?0
-
The only reason to be annoyed at something like this is because you feel guilty, and that is not the fault of the person posting the picture.0
-
I had to laugh when I read.."This is not a selfie. This is an act of war,"
Really?!0 -
That is something to be proud of. Why wouldn't you want to show it off?0
-
People need to be less concerned about what other people are doing.0
-
Seems to be a mixture of jealousy and guilt making people get so vitriolic about such pictures. Personally I'm just impressed that she can look that good 4 days after giving birth.0
-
meh someone's husband needs to give them more attention0

What ever voodoo she did for that body...,I want in0

Wow, 4 days after having a baby? She looks like she could be walking the Victoria's Secret runway. Very impressive.0

The lazy and unmotivated will always whine about the hard working and motivated.0

Whenever I see a woman with a body like that and she says she has X amount of kids (I don't care how many) my immediate response is:
:noway:
Followed by:
"Your kids? Surely you adopted!"
To which they respond (with a smile and a laugh): "Nope. I had them myself."
To which my reaction again is: :noway: "Wow. Just. . . . wow."0 -

I am sad for you for feeling that way.0 -
What I hate about all of these moms under attack is the fact that people think they are not allowed to be sexy because they are mothers.
I am a mother of 6. I gave up my life to raise them and be there for them. I have spent 14 years of my life home raising babies and I have felt only like a mother and a wife. I felt ugly, and like I didn't exist.
Being a mother is ridiculously hard and many women lose their identity. I think it's awesome that these women have taken the time to do something for themselves, to reclaim themselves and look fantastic and show it.
People need to shut the eff up and mind their own damn business.0 -
I want that body.
I have an almost 2 year old and wish that between college, work, being a mom, and a wife among other things, that I had the time to dedicate to it, but I am lucky to fit any exercise in at all.
But good for her.0 -

for crying out loud 4 days after i had any of min i was like BECAUSE I HADENT SLEPT IN 4 FREAKING DAYS..... work out at 8+ months? yeah right my work outs consisted of wobble-leaking taking the dog out for his walks0

This is not something to be jealous of, it is not as if a woman 4 days postpartum is allowed to diet or exercise. I didn't care what I looked like for about a month, I was more concerned about the ability to climb stairs to my bedroom.
The only issue that I have with this trend is that women are being shamed into trying to make their bodies look as if they had never had a child. That is so sad to me. I am proud of being able to do an amazing thing with my body. I do exercise and diet- but I never am ashamed of stretch-marks, or a little pouch up front, or the fact that my hips have gotten a tad wider.
Why is it so shameful to look as if you had birthed a child?0 -
I'm just having a hard time figuring out how she felt so great 4 days after birth that she is not rocking the granny panties and fleece PJs. I didn't wear panties like that for weeks after having my kids, and not because of my big butt and thighs, even though they were huge.
I'm impressed, and yes jealous too.0 -
I read this a few hours ago and I don't understand what all the backlash is about, let alone how this is a war. I think everyone that is complaining is jealous on some level. The lady in the picture worked to look the way that she does. Most people won't look like her 4 days post baby, but that shouldn't allow people to knock her done. Such foolishness and cattiness.0

Well, at least you'd know she puts out...0

Yeah, I didn't wear panties like that 4 days after giving birth because I was still bleeding profusely.0 -
I dont think she looks great at all. She looks under fed and scrawny except for her boobs. No definition anywhere other than her belly and photo shop can do alot of things. She probably only gained 20 lbs or less during pregnancy.
To note...i am not a hater or jealous of this womans body. I have my own body that i am proud of. More power to her if that is the look she is going for. She obviously stayed fit during pregnancy.0 -
Good for her!!! She looks Amazing for someone with a 4 day old!!! If I could change one thing about all 4 of my pregnancies, it would of been to look after my body and continue to work out, not stuff every morsel of junk food in my mouth and use it as an excuse to laze around........ just cause I was pregnant!!!! No need to be jealous about her, women should look at it as motivation to be the best that YOU can be, doesn't necessarily mean you have to look like her post birth, but knowing you did the best you could do and continued to work at yourself and be healthy!!!0

In before someone asks why she's out of the kitchen.
Damn autocorrect0 -

Why is it so shameful to look as if you had birthed a child?
Why is it offensive to not look like you had a kid, even if you did?0
