Why the fitness culture on Social Media needs to die

Also, there are a lot of great people out there that are well trained in fitness with web sites and Fb pages and they are sharing valuable info and body positivity. You should check out Girls Gone Strong! Or Erin Simmons.0

I do not get why someone would follow a hashtag if they had not interest in the subject matter -
I do not care what the body type - muscular, skinny, obese, - calling someone gross is just low and uncalled for
agreed. it was really rude. if the author dont like that that body type they should mind their business. that lady has worked her butt off to look like that. i think the article was silly.0 -
Why are people so butt hurt about EVERYTHING! This was not an attack on healthy living it was a funny/sarcastic article showing the weird cult things that are coming out of it. The fact you #fitfam people are so upset about this really shows some colors. The whole point was, "be healthy and ****, don't be a *kitten* about it though"
I was just wondering the same thing about you. Why so serious?
And personally, I didn't find the article funny/insightful at all...
...and I have a pretty keen eye for humor (and humour)...
...but I had never heard of this whole #fitfam movement until this article, and I don't have a bunch of friends like the author described, so perhaps I wasn't her target audience.
:drinker:
Well quite possibly her and my and many other's instagram feeds have friends on it who do this, I had 2 friends of mine argue in a 50 post thread on my FB page why chicken was or was not going to kill you (Vegetarian vs Personal Trainer) and my Personal Trainer friend almost never posts anything about their food, workouts, shaming others for their food choices, but the ones that do are the ones complaining they can't eat anything, don't have a life because of workouts and are miserable. #ButItWillPayOff #NoFitNoLife
I understand that there are annoying people out there...
...but I do not understand why you call them friends. Are these close friends that only recently started getting annoying? If so, let them know. If they are not close or are not even actually friends...(as I suspect is the case)...that you are still subjecting yourself to their annoying ways is on you.
In the words of the great prophet:
"If there was a problem...
...yo, I'll solve it."0 -
So, a woman that's muscular and fit is gross? I find her to be strong and powerful, which equals beautiful.0

I agree. The woman is healthy, strong, and beautiful. I have little patience for body shaming. The author lost all credibility with me right off the bat with that one.0 -
OP:
Hilarious! Exactly my thoughts!
Thanks for posting the article OP! I liked it but that is only because I can laugh at myself.0 -
Don't know (or care) what #FitFam is, but I suggest the author stop following it if she hates it so much. LOL to the author b!tc#ing about "naturally fit bodies." Sounds jealous. She condemns this fitness "movement" as being a bunch of self-absorbed cult members finding "love in a hopeless place." Very bitter if you ask me. Sounds like she needs a little love, herself. I guess it's supposed to be satire, but it's not very cleverly done. It just sounds like a rant to me. Odd to bring this subject to MyFitnessPal, a social media site related to health and fitness. I mean, really?!
:ohwell:0 -
I have no idea what this article is talking about. Also no clue what #fitfam is. But fitness scrutiny about food and routines has been going on well before the internet. Fitness is almost at the same level as politics and religion in terms of passion.0
-
Another question is why is it that anyone that disagrees with the author insisting they are "Just Jealous" or as others have inferred, I'm "Jealous" of the muscle woman because I don't think it's attractive. I don't go around calling people "Jealous" just because they think my job is boring, I don't call people jealous because they don't like blonde hair, or certain clothing or shoe styles, or because they don't have a certain bra size.0

I don't think people are jealous. I do think they are misguided and body shaming.0

if you go around calling people "gross" (or agreeing with people who call others "gross") then you can expect a backlash and you can expect people to question why you're saying that. Sorry but it does come across as jealousy when someone is calling someone else who's fit and good looking "gross".............. if you'd simply said "this isn't the look that I want for myself" you wouldn't have got that backlash, because that doesn't insult anyone. Personally, I don't want to look like a supermodel, not even remotely, but I can still see that they're beautiful women who have the right look for what they want to do in life. Just because I don't want that look for myself, doesn't make them "gross" (they wouldn't be supermodels if they weren't beautiful!) and even if I thought that they were "gross" then that's the kind of opinion that I should keep to myself, because I don't have the right to insult people based on what their body looks like, just because I don't happen to want to look like that myself.

I merely posted the article and said I agreed, I didn't think I needed to go through line by line and explain myself. Gross wouldn't have been the word I would have used but I didn't write the piece. I'd just have said "No thanks" if it were up to me. But it wasn't just the picture it was the whole thing. I didn't insult anyone, People seemed to get VERY testy about the picture but were allowed to say that the author or me was probably "Just a fatA$$" troll at a computer. (post was removed). My first thought after coming back to my post when I could read it was "How nice to see all you healthy, "positive" people calling the author "bitter", "a hater", deriding her article as "garbage" and attempting to fat-shame anyone who disagrees with you ("I bet she typed this while eating a pint of ice cream"). What a load of nastiness. Shame that you aren't comfortable enough with yourselves to accept that other people may have different views."0 -
oh, hey. you must have found that on the planet opposite.0

I read this and I think it is so absolutely true.
http://elitedaily.com/life/culture/reasons-why-the-fitness-culture-on-social-media-needs-to-be-stopped/
I read the "#FitFam: 11 Reasons Why The Fitness Culture On Social Media Needs To Be Stopped" article as an attempt at humor that didn't quite work. I'm assuming she knows how to avoid the points that bug her. Like not looking at her online social accounts if she's not in the mood to see kind of posts she doesn't like.
Unless the writer is a total bubble-head, she couldn't possibly really care if women wear neon or have arms bigger than Popeye.
I agree with all of the food related ones as well as the one about people acting like a martyr for living their own self-imposed lifestyle. But it's just my irrelevant opinion. The article was her opinions. No harm, no foul. Life will go on for millions.
Some of the commenters really got themselves worked up about such a small thing.0 -
I asasumed the article to be a joke piece and the author was poking fun at those people on facebook or wherever who start a health / fitness regime and then go all Nazi about it. Doesn't anyone have a sense of humour anymore?0

There is no way that you posted this without knowing what type of reactions you would get from it. It seems like you were seeking negative attention, and now you have it. :drinker:0 -

Well there is disagreeing and then there is being catty and hateful, which is the obvious tone of this article. You said you fully agreed with the article, so...0 -

You said in your OP: "I read this and I think it is so absolutely true." - that implies you agree with everything in the article, including the picture of the woman being captioned "gross"........... if you didn't agree with that, then yes, you did need to point that out. And yes you did insult people.... by agreeing with an article that insults others, you're also insulting them. If that's not what you meant then you need to be a lot more careful how you phrase things. And if you think it's no big deal to caption a picture of another person as "gross" - how would you feel if someone took your picture, put it in a blog post that's read by a lot of people and captioned it "gross"?
I don't have any issue with people having different views, but the first one who insulted anyone for having different goals and looking a way that she herself didn't want to look was the author of that piece, and you said that you thought what she wrote was "so absolutely true".... the rude and fat-shaming responses was other people lowering themselves to that level and not kind either, but what did you expect, really? A lot of people would call that getting a taste of your own medicine.... it's not necessarily right what they did, but you got back the same as what you gave out, so maybe take it as a learning experience that body shaming and insulting people for what their body looks like isn't a nice thing for anyone, so no-one should do it.0 -

So using social media to share what they want about their lives with other people is being a *kitten*?
So people who share pictures and posts about their kids, pets, traveling, political views, etc... are they also *kitten*?
As a matter of fact, people who share intentionally insulting opinion blogs... would you call them *kitten* too?
My question for you is, if you are so abject to people who want to share and help others to better health, why are you even using this website since that is its primary focus?0 -
 This was "not srs" article people! :laugh:Kayla Inglima
Kayla is an intellectual, comical, organized mess. She believes that filters are only for coffee & Instagram - hence she says what is on her mind at all times. She likes sushi and wine and being cynical while remaining a likable human. Graduating from Monmouth University in New Jersey, she now seems to put that Communication degree to good use. Find her on the Elite Daily "Who We Are" page, Facebook, Twitter and, most importantly, Instagram (@kayglee), where she has a variety of awesome photos of food and other shenanigans.
If you have to tell people you are funny, you probably aren't.
I am more than aware the author was trying to be funny. Trying being the key word here. Personally, I think she failed miserably. Apparently after reading all 10 pages of this thread, I'm not the only one.0 -

except it's not funny- at all. It's poorly written- incendiary and smacks of condescension and self righteous "betterness"I merely posted the article and said I agreed, I didn't think I needed to go through line by line and explain myself. Gross wouldn't have been the word I would have used but I didn't write the piece. I'd just have said "No thanks" if it were up to me. But it wasn't just the picture it was the whole thing. you should have explained yourself- saying you agree with all that rubbish (because not only does she have bad points- it's extremely poorly written) leaves you wide open to a lot of responses- as you can see.
we are comfortable with ourselves- which is why we do what we do- she obviously isn't- because those aren't "different views" that's judgyMcJudgerson from top to bottom. plain and simple. This was not an attack on healthy living it was a funny/sarcastic article showing the weird cult things that are coming out of it.0 -
I agree and disagree from her POV. But most of the time, the public really doesn't give a **** about other's POV's.

Yeah, I hate wearing fun colored clothing, letting everyone see I'm proud I look my best, getting new healthy food ideas from others, and putting what I want on MY instagram.
Whoever wrote this article, they should probably just unfollow the people they despise. I DON'T want to see sunday foodporn. I'd rather see things that inspire me.0 -

So you're on a Social Media fitness site btchng about fitness culture?
Go back under the rock you came from, OP.
I'm not "btching" about the fitness culture..or if you are on Instagram or twitter sometimes it's a fake fitness culture the same person that complains about spending their entire Sunday at the gym and making the same grilled chicken and asparagus for the week and missing out on a family function or something fun because they are #dedicated and then they post a bikini pic and say "Oh I'm so fat I need to #juicecleanse" etc etc.
Everyone's an Armchair nutrtitionist..I've seen it here you've all seen it. You tell someone to open their diary and you are like OH MY GAWD YOU ATE A PROCESSED PIECE OF BREAD?!? how COULD you no WONDER you won't lose weight that piece of bread oh the horror!!
Reminding myself why used to like this site but not so much anymore--too many self righteous Ashholes
who do you follow that does that?? This might be a crazy concept, but maybe stop following those types of people......0
