Is butter the devil?

I avoid butter because I have hereditary high cholesterol, and my doctor said "NO MORE BUTTER!!". Now I only use olive oil for cooking. (I'm sure there's butter in the stuff I eat, but I don't have buttered bread or whatnot anymore.)

What are your opinions?

    I don't agree with a whole lotta things on that website, but I respect the writer in admitting a truth many will not..

    Quote a bunch of research showing evidence on both sides...

    Your Dr is an idiot and should know that high cholesterol, especially the hereditary version. Eating things with cholesterol or saturated fat doesn't increase your cholesterol levels, in MOST cases it will actually decrease cholesterol levels.

    My advice is to seek a second opinion.

    I got my cholesterol down from 4.4 to 2.1 by cutting down on many of my high cholesterol choices and replacing them with healthier ones.... but I won't :laugh: live in a world without butter lol.

    YOU GUYS: EAT FOOD. THAT IS IT. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, JUST EAT FOOD.

    People who get so fired up and nitpicky about single sources of "problems" are just falling for EVEN MORE food propaganda. The key to diet is and always has been balance. You need fat. You need carbs. You need salt. You need vitamins. So EAT THEM. Get them from real food instead of from pills or processed crap. The fat marbling in a steak will NOT KILL YOU.

    A shocking thing happens to your body when you start eating real food again: your cravings change. Suddenly you find yourself craving vegetables, or lentils. Your body remembers there is more than one source of iron and when you crave it (as I always do right before my period) you find yourself not just craving beef, but spinach as well. A slice of toast with butter satisfies a fat craving the way three cans of Pringles never can. You start feeling better (because food! You're eating real food!!) and junk food that once was so appealing just... isn't anymore.

    And if you get drunk and chow down on McDonalds... NOTHING BAD HAPPENS! Because you eat food the rest of the time! (OK, that's a lie, the McDonalds will make you feel like crap but you'll have a real meal 10 hours later and everything will be okay. Bodies are shockingly communicative and resilient.)

    Honestly, the Michael Pollan method is the best method I have ever found, not just for losing weight but for having your diet actually help you feel better on a daily basis: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

    It really is that easy. (And yes, it works for all socioeconomic levels too, and does not require you to eat rice and beans every night. I am sensitive to the many, many factors outside of nutritional content that are influential on diets. A little forethought and some focus when choosing convenient meals can go a LOOOOOONG way.)

    Yeah, I forgot to write down what my cholesterol is, I just know my doctor was like, "that's quite high for someone your age!". It's easy for me to stop eating butter, though, because I mainly had it SLATHERED on a bagel for breakfast (like, an insane amount of butter), and I kind of had to stop having such a dreadful, heartburn-inducing breakfast when I made the commitment to get healthy!

    In my opinion it's just a waste of calories. I don't want an extra 100 calories on my breakfast that is totally devoid of nutritional value and does nothing to help me feel full.

    Plan to be there for a while - it's a 10 part series on how cholesterol REALLY works, what it's purpose is (which makes it good for you) and how to control it (b/c when out of control, it can be bad). Bottom line though, blood cholesterol does not come from EATING cholesterol. The cholesterol your doctor is concerned about is actually made by your body.

    Butter from grass fed cows!!! YUM!! (It is higher in Omega-3... and creamier.) And since it is expensive, (both in money and in calories) I find I use it sparingly.

    Butter is just completely unnecessary. Whatever minerals are in butter can be found in a healthy balanced diet with no need for a calorie laden spread.

    I would bet a lot of money that your cholesterol went down more because you lost 29lbs and less because you "replaced high cholesterol choices"

    I don't believe that butter is evil. HFC Syrup may be. Read the book "Food Rules." I read it and when grocery shopping. Just see what you can and cannot buy using those rules. Try it. It is a real fun game.
