Almost every show that us hyped up and loved by heaps of people is bound to be seen as overrated by everyone else.

My 2c, I think a lot of the shows mentioned here go on too long and should have gone out on a high note rather than milking it for every last cent. HIMYM and Dexter fall into that category for me - the last season of HIMYM was appallingly bad.

I will completely disagree on Breaking Bad though - that *kitten* is epic and one of the best shows in the history of television.

I'm going to chime in that just because a show has a following doesn't mean that it is good or quality programming. Certain cult followings, such as that for Doctor Who, seem to be more about the community of people who attest to the geeking out of the show than about the show itself. When I talk about overrated material, I am looking at a few factors... Renewal is part of it BUT I consider the content and quality of the show moreso than how many people watch it.

Full House is still airing because it's a point of nostalgia for 80s/90s kids, much like the reason why NKOTB and Backstreet Boys are still able to fill venues despite having lost their luster and much of their youth appeal. I don't think anyone is going to claim that FH is the greatest show of all time, but it WAS one of the first shows to have long-term series potential featuring an "alternative family structure," thus being considered ground-breaking at the time. There were a few episodes during its run that were really well done as well... One of the episodes will still make me cry to this day.

The way I see it, when I consider something like Breaking Bad as being overrated, it's mostly because when you've seen much more vicious programming, it can seem pretty... well, boring. A downside to being well-read is that a person can often be exposed to much more gritty and graphic story telling that leads TV shows to pale in comparison.

It's kind of like The Hunger Games.. while it's not a show, it's also not a new story/movie concept, and has been successfully portrayed in the cinema numerous times.

    Sons of Anarchy

The reason why people love BB and hate SOA is because the characters in BB actually have redeeming qualities. You grow to like many of them, or at least be fascinated by them. And the Walter White story is so compelling precisely because he's a good man tragically caught up in a downward spiral; he's both selfless and criminal at the same time. All the character arcs are compelling in that show.

SOA, by contrast, is just a bunch of white trash criminals. They're murderers, thieves, bullies with nothing to redeem them. These aren't good men tragically caught in a bad situation; they're scumbags from the start.

When I watched this show, all I kept thinking was please just kill all them off already. The best ending for the show would be the townspeople finally arming themselves and just mowing down the whole gang on main street.

Almost any "reality" shows because they are just trash and are fake.
Shows that pretty much just focus on sex (soft porn almost) like True Blood.

I don't know. With both of them, I couldn't find it worth my time. Maybe, I'm just weird.
New thread idea: Shows I never watched but hated anyway!

Another one I couldn't swallow was Bomb Girls. The blonde with the fickle sexuality, nothing but sex and the plot of the show was repulsive.

Agents of SHIELD - so much potential, so little made of it.

This. It's the first time anything Joss Whedon has touched let me down.

I loved Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, and Walking Dead for the first few episodes. What happens after that? It is like the writers decide they can't keep an audience without turning the shows into sob-fest, melodramatic soap operas that get off way off topic and dive into drama I don't care about.
