My 2 cents on the "negativity" in this thread.

What people are telling you here is that (1) a lot of people fail on restriction diets, and (2) you don't HAVE TO restrict foods in order to lose weight. Imagine a world where you can eat ice cream AND lose weight. Yep, that's right here.

Also, if someone is giving you advice, look at their ticker if it's visible. Have they successfully lost weight? Yes? Then they might have some experience in what it takes to lose weight so, you know, they know a thing or two. Of course not everyone will agree because there are 1000 different "right ways" to lose weight, but all people are saying is don't buy into the hype that there's only one "right way."

Now you threw out food that you could have donated or eaten in moderation the wastefulness of that bothers me when there are food pantries or somewhere else if you decided you didn't want it that would have been more than happy to have accepted it.

Seriously??? And no.. they *don't* take everything (I donate all the time, so I know what they do or do not take). It cant' be opened or expired and only some of them take perishables.. And a lot of my food is opened or expired (but frozen). I hope you have never thrown a morsel of food out while laying that sort of guilt trip on someone. More food goes to waste because people forget to eat it and it spoils. Are you going to berate all of them too?? (better start with yourself as I highly doubt that has never happened to you) And the majority of wasted foods are "rejects" from the company themselves because they were't perfect. A banana that's not curved just so?? Tossed, NOT donated.. So.. there's that issue too.

Ignore the sarcastic unhelpful "I was only joking around" posts and pick out the help which is scattered in between those. They are there. I had to go all in. It's all in or I can't do it. Some people just don't get it.

I don't throw food out just because all of a sudden I decided I'm going to eat clean or whatever else. I throw out very little food, as I can always find someone that will take it or needs it. She didn't say she threw it out because it was spoiled she wasted it because all of sudden she's decided it was and I quote " terrible packaged preservative filled foods" ... that is wasteful

I didnt all of a sudden just decide yesterday I was just going to throw out all my food just for fun. I gave my unopened packaged food tp my father, but I was fairly certain he did not want my husbands used bacon ketchup thats been sitting in the fridge for months. Apparently your words are more critiqued here then I would have thought. I will be more aware of this going forward. And why am I starting today, other than the fact that tuesday is grocery shopping day, I am starting today because something clicked for me. Because im sick of feeling gross. I dont want to be unhealthy anymore.

I am a big fan of clean eating. For example, if an apple falls on the floor, I will pick it up, and clean it before eating.

If someone has looked into diets and decide this was the way they want to eat (which by the way I reject calling clean eating a diet, much less a restrictive diet) , then asks for support from others who eat that way. it's not helpful to try to talk them out of it and into your way of eating. If it's not right for them, the only way to know that is trial and error. Just like the majority of people have to do. If I had listened to everyone putting my choice to eat this way down.. I'd have never lost my weight. That's truth, since every time I "derail" i put it back on. Because ya know.. moderation *also* does not work for everyone (shocking right?)

There are plenty of instances where "clean eating" is preached as One-Wayism. OP said she researched "clean eating" so she has been exposed to more than just this thread.

I did say there were 1000 "right ways." Of course moderation does not work for everyone. The point is that restriction diets are pushed more often than moderation, and while some people do just fine with restriction diets, many others either fail on them completely or do something like 80/20 - which is the same thing as moderation.

Does she really want to eat this way, or does she feel she HAS to eat this way in order to lose weight? You're assuming she wants to. If she does, then she will regardless of what anyone says, and if it works out for her then wonderful. But what if she does not know about the magical world where you can eat ice cream and lose weight? I didn't know that existed until I started reading the boards here and saw people with 30, 50, 100+ pound losses on their tickers talking about ice cream and cookies.

Cut out all sodas and try to incorporate more fruits and veggies in your snacking rather than sweets and chips. be sure to drink lots and lots and slots of water

  • I feel that we all try our best.... there are days that I slip but that does not mean I throw the entire journey out the window.... I know that for me a food journal is the most important thing besides exercise that has helped me. I have really become an advocate for writing it down. The other thing to keep in mind is do what is right for you. Not every diet is right for every person but only you know what your body is like and what your lifestyle will allow. Any step to a healthier life is the right step

I do understand that you of course can eat everything in moderation and count calories and lose weight. I personally decided that my willpower is overruled when I come face to face with delicious cake topped with frosting. If I dont change my lifestyle, my *kitten* will just grow and grow. So I have decided to do a total change. If its not here, I wont eat it. Its as simple as that. Will there be days that I will fail? Of course. I know there will be. Will I be able to keep sustain this type of eating? I'm hopeful. Im creative when it comes to cooking. I hope eating better will make me feel better and I will feel rewarded by that and will continue on.

:) Lost 75 eating clean.(put 10 back on though, due to crappy food choices) Tickers mean very little, food choices and sticking to your plans and goals mean everything. And yes I'm assuming she wants to because shes said "I've researched different diets and decided this is the way I want to go". oh and some of us "have to eat this way in order to lose weight" because moderation does not happen. period. It's great that it works for you. You're assuming it will work for everyone. Clean eating is *not* a restriction diet. Not in the sense that a restriction diet is usually applied. I don't feel deprived at all. I don't feel restricted at all. I feel great. the only way to know if it's for you, is to try it. I have been way off track and felt like crapola and been preforming like crapola. 3 days back on track and I feel amazing again. And I cant' wait to get to the gym. It is not pushed any more or less then those preaching moderation.

    Hi everyone!
I just heard about this amazing site and am starting my weight loss journey tomorrow. I have just thrown away all of my terrible packaged preservative filled foods, and have done research on clean eating. I was wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for me? Thank you!
Can't wait for the healthy new me!

Welcome to MFP... I'll start there oh and Good luck to you. Question one.. why start tomorrow?

Now you threw out food that you could have donated or eaten in moderation the wastefulness of that bothers me when there are food pantries or somewhere else if you decided you didn't want it that would have been more than happy to have accepted it.

Question 2: The other part what is so terrible of packaged food? I eat a wide variety of food my health is better than it's been in 10 years.

Whenever I make any change in regards to my health and fitness, I ask myself "Am I willing to do this forever?" if the answer is yes, than it is probably a good change, if the answer is no, then I probably need to think about why I am making the change.

But since you already think the very helpful posts before me were negative I'll leave with that...

    :flowerforyou:

Really...you are chastising her for not taking her food to a food bank???

Most of the food in my house has been opened or altered in some way. Food banks will not take opened containers or partially used items.

    They want NEW food...

    Really???

I can agree if it is canned goods or boxed dry goods THAT HAVE NOT BEEN OPENED.

Just one more way of trying to make someone feel guilty because they don't do things the same way that you might.

    Nothing like shaming someone...

I haven't read all the above - hate negative comments, uneducated answers and being disrespectful to the original poster who asked for tips!! BUT I have been eating clean for the last year, top tip - aim for clean 80% of the time - 100% clean can be extremely daunting,

Really SnoozieBunny what you are saying is exactly what those of us that are are supposedly being "negative" are saying, that 100% clean is difficult and in a lot of cases not sustainable. How is your comment any different?

I wish you much success with your weight loss journey and lifestyle changes. I too changed all my old eating habits and started over. I eat much healthier now and feel better than ever. Do what works for you and tweak things as you go along. Stay positive and make small goals. Celebrate each of these goals and continue on your journey.

Do it your way...it is the only way this works...if you find what "fits" you.

I don't eat clean...dirty...high...low...I just eat...whatever it is I want. That is the only way that it works for me. I tried other methods...I failed...when I failed...I just kept trying until I found what would.

I do try to meet my nutrients and do that fairly well...most days. Unfortunately for me...when I increase those healthy vegetables...I develop intestinal problems.

Good luck...find what works...make sure it is healthy...stick to it. If by some chance it doesn't work...you can always adjust it in the future.

Good for you! I think Clean Eating is the way to go. Benefits of clean eating is that it can drastically reduce or eliminate cravings. Clean eating will change your health and hopefully your weight. I disagree that it is all calorie counting. I eat weight more calories than I am supposed to but I eat very clean and healthy and I lose half a pound a day.
    No, you don't.

You eat at a deficit, hence why you're losing.

Keep up your optimism. Add new foods that satisfy you. (That is easier to do than focusing on what you have given up.)

This is the type of post that brings out the heated debates.

Clean eating (which varies from person to person on the definition) is not the only way to go...maybe for you...but what is right for you might not be for someone else.

The "no processed food" is another debatable point. I just got through having some cashew butter on my homemade oatmeal muffins. The cashew butter is processed...came in a jar...guess what it has in it...yep...cashews...that is it.

So while I stay clear of some processed foods (mainly because of the sodium since I have HBP) there are healthy choices out there in Processed Land. You just have to choose the ones that fit your goals and the outcome that you are seeking.

If that were true, then for most of human history, "cleaning eating" would have let to starvation.

Stop pretending that I'm dismissing what worked for you.

As for "clean eating" being a restriction diet, as far as I'm concerned any eating plan that considers certain foods off-limits is a restriction diet. If you don't feel like it's a restriction diet, that's fine, and I'm not going to argue over the semantics of restriction.

It's a great place to get support if you're willing to be objective. Not everyone is going to agree with approaches (vegan, Paleo, clean eating, low carb, low sugar, etc), so you'll hear objections to your approach. It's not about just being "rah, rah" and "you go girl". You'll get a lot of good insight from people who are well versed in nutrition and exercise with evidence supported from peer reviewed study. Good support means not only help and backing, but correct information so you don't waste your money or time.

This. The "mean" and "negative" people tend to be the ones you will learn the most from. They're really not either, they just don't sugar coat things.

here is a great post to read:

My understanding of the term clean eating is based on a diet of lean meats. Fish. Whole grains. Fruits. Veggies. Sticking mainly to the perimeter of the grocery store. Foods as close to their natural state as they can be. Staying away from foods that are man made and packaged. And so on.

Yep. That's pretty much it. Just be wary of the perimeter. My store's all have their bakery and deli on the perimeter. And those are not really food I want to be eating. :~P

My stores also have Ice Cream, Dairy, and a handful of other "bad" items on the perimeter.

mmmm ice cream, i have some every day!

Really SnoozieBunny what you are saying is exactly what those of us that are are supposedly being "negative" are saying, that 100% clean is difficult and in a lot of cases not sustainable. How is your comment any different?

This is what I find so puzzling. The debate seems mostly to be between people who say "I've thought about it and although I think it's good to have an overall healthy diet, to me that does not require cutting out all sweets always or restaurant meals always or burgers always, or every single pre packaged food that one might find in the supermarket (i.e., yogurt)" and those who claim that they follow "clean" principles but then admit that they eat other stuff 20% of the time or when they screw up or whatever. The first just seems more sensible and honest and to lead to more reasonable ways of thinking about individual choices and not beating yourself up.

I don't see the point of creating a system where you eat ice cream on occasion but then have to justify it as "oh, I was overcome by my craving." Why not just say that you think that ice cream--in moderate, not a whole pint or after every meal, obviously, and with reference to percentage of total calories and getting nutrients met first--fits just fine into an overall healthy diet and schedule it in or eat it on occasion when you have lots of exercise calories to spend? It just seems healthier, and not to play into some false situation where you have to be overcome with desire to get an overall satisfying to you diet. (Since I don't believe people would perceive themselves to be overcome with desire if they were overall satisfied.)

There are exceptions, mostly the raw folks (who I do think have an overly restrictive diet, but whatever), but so far I see no big difference between the clean eating folks and most others (I peek in diaries) and often the clean eating people even seem to eat more sweets or packaged stuff than many others who don't so identify. So what's the point of the term? I continue to think it's just to demonize other ways of eating, rather hypocritically. If that weren't the reason, why try to create some special category and not just exchange ideas with everyone on normal stuff like cooking, making food taste good with herbs and spices (although the idea that cooking with fats being unclean is bizarre to me) and so on?

Clearly this has nothing to do with the OP, but since it's becoming yet another clean eating debate...
