Sadly the internet represents/brought about the downfall of civility in society, especially in the US, in general. That said i've seen far worse forums out there. You should see the forums that handle hobbies and sports or worse the ones for video games. You go on the ones for Call of duty and such and there'll be 35 year olds acting like 10 year olds. It's against human nature to take advice even when it's good for you, none of us like to hear that we're doing things wrong but it's how we learn and grow. That said i think the MFP could do with more bannings of people promoting unhealthy lifestyles and products. I'd be up for a 1 warning then a ban system for folks who promote unhealthy advice repeatedly.

I cut my forum teeth on video game forums.

MFP pales in terms of vulgarity, rowdiness, and rudeness. Why no one has told me how they spent last night with my mom even once.

Because it was your dad. Oh snap.

I've used forums since the early 90s on usenet before there were many forums on the web. I've seen people go to holy war arguing about text editors. Nothing surprises me anymore. Except youtube comments. Those can inflict brain damage via TCP/IP. :explode:

My father is dead! How dare you make jokes about my father, knowing that some people have lost their father and thus such things could be considered very offensive and triggering! How dare you not stop and censor yourself just in case the person you're responding to has lost a parent? The cruelty is truly mind blowing!

My attention span is entirely too short for this thread, but I am enjoying the butt hurt, the little of it I have read. If those who are that upset would do something constructive (like I don't know, help someone), MFP would be a better place. Instead, they're hell bent on proving how bad everyone is who actually does try to help.

I think you have a point sadly. There are some amazing people on here but some must be very miserable and seem to enjoy attacking others.

As an outsider reading through this thread i have a different take on things. What i see is you criticizing others for pages and pages on the very thing that you are guilty of. You read something into a question that simply wasn't there and chose to reply with a snarky remark. With a comment like that it seems obvious that you were the one intent on completely shutting down the lines of communication. Then you tried to blame it on other people instead of taking responsibility for it.

Thank you for your opinion. It has been duly noted. Now, please show me where I've called a name, posted a passive-aggressive gif, or celebrated someone deactivating an account, because those are the major criticisms I have made. Ever since DavPaul stalked off (and has now returned for one attempt at a hit) there have been those attempting to make this thread about me to derail it. Oddly, this thread is not about me, but about the bad behavior of posters on these forums. Judging by the number of people in this thread who have basically written off the general forums, I think it's a well-deserved criticism.

You repeatedly criticized people's reading comprehension, and when you were clearly guilty of the same, you made excuses as to how it was everybody else's fault

Honestly, I think the Dark Triad piece is the best. It deserves its own thread seeing as how this one is soon to be locked (by mod intervention or page 20.) It's really interesting. :glasses:

LOL This is kind of what I always think when I see the mean people threads, my introduction to the internet was being a fat white guy posting on a hip-hop message board for almost a decade. This place is Candyland compared to that den of hatred.

I have seen some mean things said to others, I have had mean things said to me here - and to be perfectly honest with myself I have probably said mean things...in a Joanne Moniz thread for example.

That said, I try to stay positive and helpful when I give advice because everyone is at a different spot, and I remember when someone here was a **** to me at the very start of my weight loss, I found it jarring (and this was someone being actually mean, not blunt, not direct - just being an as*hole and trying to score lulz).

On the other side of things - I have made posts where I am very polite, stress I am speaking from my experience, directly link the evidence I feel backs up my claim AND clearly say do what works for you - and have still been called a "hater" and "a-hole". So part of me thinks it is easier to just be blunt.

I think a message board is just like life - you will have people who are jerks, straight forward, polite, stupid, smart, stupid-smart, insensitive, too sensitive, etc... The good news is you can simply use the ignore function to block whoever you don't vibe with. I kind of wish real life had a better ignore function.

    Some issues I have noticed:

    1. Aversion to objective scientific discussion. Discussions usually end with subjective experiences countering scientific research including "Well I FEEL fabulous after the detox/cleansing/etc diet." or "I was able to look like <photo.jpg> with my one weird trick and I don't need your peer reviewed research."

    2. A case of all opinions being the same syndrome including all opinions deserving equal attention. Even the really horrendous one.

    3. Many people complaining about "mean" people who are actually giving good advice while their interaction is limited to "go got this" and "you can do it."

Because I cannot help myself and am a snarky know-it-all, this is often called the Droste effect named after the label for a Dutch cocoa powder. Now I want hot chocolate.
