Quality of food or quantity, which is more important to you?

that is a tough one, I have had this argument more than once...I say good food in is better for you, they say a calorie is a calorie...so as long as you take supplements you can eat chocolate all day as long as you stay in the calorie goal...I don't think so but that is what they say.
Who is this "they" that says the following?as long as you take supplements you can eat chocolate all day as long as you stay in the calorie goal.
I have never read or heard anyone make that statement. I struggle to see how anyone could meet their protein and fat minimums and stay under a reasonable calorie goal following that approach.
Now you see the folly?
???
I'm missing the folly too0 -

The point being eat healthy 90% of the time and occasionally have that food your craving in moderation.
like sugarz!!!!
Whatever you desire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you believe your over use of the exclamation point gives better credibility to your claims? Because for me it reminds me of when my son was about 2 years old and yelling ITS NOT FAIR!!!!!!
Name calling and rudeness is not appreciated.0 -
I care more about quality than quantity. The only thing that I really don't mind eating a small amount of that is considered unhealthy would be ice cream and candy. Usually when I eat fried foods/drink pop, I feel bloated and disgusting, and regret it immediately. So quality over quantity0

the rudeness (if you consider it rude) comes from your lack of sources while wrongfully discrediting others who actually have provided the source of their information0 -

When did I name call? I asked a question well a few questions. Will you open your diary so I can learn from your wonderful example? And why do you believe on the excessive use of an exclamation point? Pretty simple questions I thought0 -

I think you must realize by now that your unwillingness to back up any of your wild claims is just fanning the flames of this thread. What is your point?0 -
I ask because I see in a lot of diaries things like a breakfast of real junk food and at the end of the day the calorie intake is right but the food quality is soooo wrong. Not that I'm judging, to each his own and I've seen some great weight losses with this method.
Do you count every calorie and weigh you food? Do you plan out your meals the day before? I do count my calories but have never weighed my food, can't imagine it. Do you think it's important to do that and if so, why isn't counting calories enough? One thing I do religiously is plan my meals a day ahead. That way I'm not starring in the fridge or cupboard trying to figure out what to eat.
If I meet my macro goals for weight loss or muscle gain (or whatever I am doing at the time) and I am meeting my micronutrient needs, then my "food quality" is bang on Doritos or no Doritos.
For your information, I don't meet my iron needs without the dark chocolate. And the cookies are in there for a reason too.
Because cookies are a macro, right? RIGHT?!
Sometimes you need a high carb that's also a protein. And that's going to be peas or Tollhouse cookies. Sometimes you've had enough B vitamins and fiber in a day.
I'm totally in agreement.
I just would rather cookies be a macro.
Alcohol is. You can't have everything, you know.0 -

Again, there was no name calling or rudeness...it's a valid question...0 -
Other sources that tell the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'm an Health Care Professional.
And I am a Computer Programmer, but I am still full of **** if I don't site my sources.
Rude, and arrogance, will not get you any respect from me, my friend.
FWIW - you don't have the respect of anyone at this point. Quit trying to scaremonger and provide some sources for the silliness you are claiming.

I'd ask to see the research on the health outcomes of taking supplements - I don't think they're shown to be that effective.
But, if you are eating a balanced diet, whatever you eat after meeting your needs is whatever you want. You don't get bonus points for extra.0 -
For me it's about quality.
That's why I have foie gras, and black truffles in my larder.0 -

Depends on the supplement.
Creatine is shown in research to be legit.
I have anecdata (paired with my neuro having read supporting research) that Magnesium supplementation will resolve migraines.
That's two that ain't rasberry beret ketones.0 -

He's not being rude and arrogant. He's stating common sense. Making a statement and not backing it up only makes you look ignorant. Simple as that.
Rudeness, is one think that I do not like. State your opinion, without name calling or rudeness.
He made a statement about himself. It had asterisks. Where is the name calling or rudeness?0 -
It's always funny what people include in "junk" food.
IMO, if it comes in a box or a bag or a can it's probably "junk food." That definition is very broad and there are certainly exceptions but basically it works. And, yes, everyone is going to consume some junk food. My concern lies with people who eat ONLY junk food. Their diaries are full of cereals, bars, fruit snacks, frozen meals, pre-made dinners, etc. but very little (or no) meat or dairy or veggies or fruit. That's totally their choice and no business of mine. But I do wonder if they are aware that this is not really the best food they could be eating and I feel a measure of concern for them. As a society, we are dangerously ignorant about nutrition.
Just so you are aware this is a global website, not all countries and cultures are the same. I don't know where you are from because it doesn't say on your page and yes fresh is best, but not all countries have a billion additives in food that is packaged just cos it's packaged. In america I saw pasta sauces with so many additives in it I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole but my American friends thought it was ok and healthy. If that is what you are referring to, cool then say American culture or speak of the culture you are referring to.
I personally used canned tomatoes in my meals, I read all labels, in my country we have laws that mean we have to show every ingredient and thankfully the nutritional information isn't just in percentages but in actual calorie amounts.
I haven't been the greatest at this but I think the cleaner you eat the better, quality is best. I do think eating treats that fit into your macros is fine but not everyday IMO, but it works for some, I personally don't lose weight easily and even treat food that fits in your macros seems to stop my weight loss all together. Keeping it as fresh as possible is great, but a few tins and packages here and there is fine as long as it doesn't have stupid additives like corn syrup.0 -

Oh, I agree. Supplementing can cure specific conditions - scurvy, for example.
It's substituting the multi-vitamins for a balanced diet that I'd question. If you need to or want to or are advised by your doctor to, rock on. I took them during pregnancy, because there ARE benefits to the baby. But, everything else I've read makes me question the One-a-Days.
I should have been more specific.0 -

Wait... Let's not pull MORE things out of thin air. No one here ever resorted to name calling. They are all SIMPLY asking you to provide some proof of your original claim. The fact that you have yet to do that, just confirms that your claim is unfounded. Like I said, it's not up to us to prove your claim. So, the burden of proof is on YOU and you alone.0 -

I think she completely missed the point.
Are you talking about periods? It does seem that she can only find question marks and exclamation points.0 -
I work in healthcare too...as evidenced by my need to complete HIPAA training.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm obviously an expert so anything I say should be taken as truth regardless of my lack of cites to support and any other references to the contrary...
...because healthcare.
I thought it was your rock-hard abs that should cause us to take any statements of yours as gospel?0 -
So anyhow, if I had this false dichotomy of choice between appropriate food quantity (as measured in calories) and appropriate food quality (as measured in...uh, nutrient density? Healthfulness? Whatever the measurement is)...
I would rather have sufficient quantity of calories from my food but lacking quality than sufficient quality but lacking quantity. The former may lead to eventual less-than-ideal health from some undefined deficiency, but the latter will very quickly lead to death (assuming the lacking quantity is scaled as I continue to lose weight.
Of course, like I opened, it's a false dichotomy. There is no either-or. The questions are mutually exclusive. Do you have sufficient (or better, *appropriate*) calories ("quantity")? Do you have sufficient nutrition ("quality")?
And finally, my favorite question...
Which is healthier? A daily diet of 2000 calories of pizza or a daily diet of 2000 calories of organic broccoli? (Of course, you'll never see this study done because the latter group will suffer from debilitating health issues...or death.)
TL;DR - false dichotomies are false and context matters.0 -

That's how I choose whose statements to take as gospel anyway.0 -
No idea how you're defining "quality" but I'd say both.
Steak? I like prime, so quality.
Ice cream? I like quality, so Blue Bell.
Broccoli? I can't tell one floret from another. Quantity.0 -
I am morbidly obese and quantity is the most important to me. I overeat (my portions were too large) and I had a binge about every 10 days (not tv worthy binging, but you know, a whole bag of candy type thing). Logging, even if I'm not weighing keeps me accountable.
I started just by cutting down the bad stuff. People who are much smaller than me still cringe at my diary. The thing is, after a week or so of the small portions of bad stuff you get hungry. REALLY hungry. Then you have to start the shifting. You have to add in veggies, you have to lower the carbs and dressings and sauces, because if you don't you feel like you are starving because there simply isn't enough nutrition in the bad stuff to keep you going.
I recently made enchiladas. As I entered all the various ingredients one really surprised me. One tortilla was 250 cal. If I hadn't been logging I would have never, ever guessed it to be so high. So next time I buy tortillas, I will be label reading. I'm sure there is a better brand or option, I just didn't know that was a problem ingredient.
Quantity first, but when you are really hungry you will either give up or make different choices.
I think this post got lost in the middle of the sugar/cancer/heart disease posts. This post and cwolfman's (the second one on this thread) pretty much sums it up.0 -

So you won't open your diary? You won't cite your sources to back up your claim? You won't explain your obsession with the exclamation point? I have one more question:
You make all these claims... if you were so healthy you have been here for just under a year and your ticker says you have lost 10 lbs with a lot more to go... but I'm supposed to follow what you say blindly?0 -

That's the way quackery works.0 -
For the people that think I've been on this site for a year, they are wrong. Just started using this site, but been a healthy eater all my life.
My weight started to rise because of my portion being too large.
The reason I will not respond to insults is because it's not worth it to me to argue the point. I just made a contribution to a topic, take it or leave, it is up to you.0 -

you joined mfp in august of 2013 btw, thats just shy of a year
ETA; also, no insults, just asking to provide sources. is that an insult to you, to ask you to prove what you claim to be fact despite numerous people providing valid information that states otherwise?0
